Throughout the gilded age and the dawn of the 20th century St. Louis served as home for several of the nation’s premier shoe manufacturers including the world’s largest at the time, International Shoe Company. Founded by Henry William Peters after a 1911 merger with Johnson & Rand Co., the manufacturers’ dominance of the shoe market spurred on for decades. In addition to the company's factory on Madison Street, ISC operated a factory at 2553 St. Louis Avenue (no longer extant). The St. Louis Avenue facility was originally constructed for Peters Shoe Company, earlier established in 1892 by Mr. Peters, who served as ISC’s first vice-president, and commissioned a dwelling constructed not far from his factory, which remains a private residence and is within the St. Louis Place Historic District.

Many of the ISC shoe brands including Peters, International, and Red Goose were sold through the old May Co. housed in the preeminent commercial architecture of its day located at 555 Washington Avenue, the same address Selkirk Auctioneers and Appraisers shares today. We are proud to offer the advertising collection of the Peters legacy by descent, property of Raymond W. Peters II, great-great-grandson of the founder.

The Peoria, IL collection of the Late Rudy and Joyce Higgins, who were celebrated antique dealers and certified appraisers, is a combination of unique advertisement and branding material, antique furniture, as well as over fifty examples of clocks.

Owners of Abe’s Antiques, located at 2001 Wisconsin Avenue in Peoria, the collection was most recently housed in the Higgins’ historic Peoria home which was built by T.N. Gorman, the first Postmaster General of Peoria, from whom the Higgins purchased the home in 1968. The accumulation of items spans 60 years and displays the personality of the regionally well known and respected dealers.
