People Power!

On 21 February, HR Central CEO Damien Gooden, presented at a SSAA Training Day on HighPerformance Teams. Here are some of Damien’s practical hints and tips towards driving high-performance teams.

A GREAT PERSON COMES FROM A GREAT RECRUITMENT PROCESS

Where do you advertise? How do you short-list? Will they fill that gap that you are looking for?

Too often we recruit like-minded and same-same, but they are not always a great business fit if you look at your business as a whole.

And most importantly, what are your non-negotiables? (and hold on to them at all costs).

!TIP: Sometimes you need different view points, different methodologies to reach your business goals. Ask what are you actually looking for? What do you actually need? (Be honest, because if you are not, at this point, you are not going to find that great hire).

INDUCTION PROCESS

Did you know that one in five hires leave after 45 days in a new job?

However, did you know that 69% of employees are likely to stay for three or more years if they go through a structured onboarding process? A simple solution that dramatically changes the turnaround. A good induction process has several stages to it. It doesn’t just start on day one for a week….it includes pre-commencement, first week, and first month.

!TIP: Get your new inductee sorted with a buddy from the first day. That buddy can show them around, introduce them to the team, take them for coffee, show them the neighbourhood. This way they will already feel ‘in the know’ and have an opportunity to bond with a colleague and feel welcomed.

PROBATION

Such a bad word, but such an important phase in the employee lifecycle. This period is crucial to ensure you have hired right. Set clear guidelines, observe work patterns and hold back from making promises you may regret. Keep notes, make regular meetings, have well documented communications so if you feel you do need to say goodbye it has been done in the best possible way. Let’s face it – interviews are really only face value, you need someone actually working in your business before you can tell if they are the right fit or not.

MILLENNIALS

They just keep comin’! 50% of the workforce will be millennials by 2025 (people born between 1980 and you know, whatever!) Business owners and managers need to know how to manage an age-blended workforce, keeping in mind that the majority of workers will be millennials. So, who are they and how should I work with them? (If you are not one your self….)

A PwC survey found that millennials are more interested in career development than bonuses…really? Really. They want purpose, success, career paths and as a result you have to get on board.

Managing your talent, having goals in place make for a happier and more productive workforce.

Consider training and coaching to bring out the best in your team and to help them feel a sense of moving ahead. These millennials don’t sit still for too long…

!TIP: Keep in mind here is flexibility. Flexible working conditions are a real player in today’s workforce. Working different hours, working from home and understanding work/ life balance (allowing time off to see a child’s concert, sports etc), if your working environment allows it – use it!

TO CONCLUDE

All of the above means nothing if you don’t have a solid baseline. Clear and concise policies, position descriptions, contracts, plus correct and accurate pay rates and entitlements, will ensure compliance and set each employee up correctly from the get-go. It will make it easier to follow the above guidelines resulting in a well-oiled machine and you can get on with your core business! l
