But how the situation will affect self-builders remains to be seen; even though we’re only a month away from exiting the European Union it’s not clear how goods and services will move between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Any form of border or custom check could make it more difficult – and therefore more expensive – for self-builders to source products on either side of the border. But at the time of writing, whether or not that would happen, and how, was still up in the air.

As the saying goes: life goes on.

Regardless of the Brexit situation, there’s a reason why you’re planning to build a new home or are in the process of improving it. MEET THE SELFBUILDERS There’s nothing like getting advice and support from friends and family. The next best thing if you’re building or renovating your home is meeting self-builders who have been through the process and can give you the benefit of hindsight.

Five sets of homeowners are at Selfbuild Live to share their experience on a 1-2-1 basis, so grab a seat and ask your questions…

Hansel House Co. Laois

Gillian and Seamus Brennan’s County Laois home is the result of an intensive design process; proof that the success of a self-build hinges on taking the time to design the house as you and your family truly intend to live in it. The house was built by a main contractor (cavity wall construction) and the couple has plenty of tips to share when going down this route. Gillian for her part designed the interiors herself with upcycling, craftsmanship and thriftiness in mind.

Seanua House Co. Tipperary

Dan and Jessica Tynan built their home in County Tipperary through direct labour: they hired all of the specialist tradesmen, including blocklayer, electrician and plumber, and did as much as they could themselves from laying floors to painting. They are full of tips and advice if you plan to be handson with your self-build project.

Ivy Hill House Co. Waterford

Brendan and Sarah Cullinane’s Ivy Hill is located just outside Waterford city. It’s set on a 72 acre country estate which the family own. The property was a self build commencing in June 2018 and finished in April 2019 (10 month build time) through direct labour. The house itself was designed to suit its natural surroundings and to compliment Pembrokestown House, their closest neighbour. The couple’s initial idea was styled on an old Georgian farm house, but what they have ended up with has far exceeded all expectations.

Co. Down Selfbuild Co. Down

Jason and Mary Taylor built their own home in the Co Down because they couldn’t find anywhere to buy. They were very fortunate to be gifted some family land for a site in the countryside and at the top of a hill with some incredible views. They hired a main contractor to save on time and avoid mistakes that could happen with direct labour to first time self builders although Jason himself is an Architectural Assistant and was heavily involved, ‘a kid in the candy shop’ as recalls the feeling of being able to design his own house.
