WE ARE MOVING TOWARDS A BETTER FUTURE... ... at least that is the impresson we are getting

from the wine and hospitality sectors. With the gradual increase in the numbers of people going out to restaurants, the extension of opening hours and the general relaxation of Covid-19 restrictions, it seems that one day, hopefully fairly soon, we will get back to where we were before the pandemic.

We are now seeing various events starting to take place (press trips, presentations, lunches, to launch new wines and/or vintages, etc.) and dates for wine fairs are already being announced (Barcelona Wine Week, Wine Paris and Vinexpo Paris, Vinitaly, etc.), which is very good news for all of us involved in the wine trade. Let’s hope that things continue moving in this direction.

But, right now, the priority for the whole industry is the upcoming Christmas campaign.

Christmas is a key time of year for wine producers, distributors and wine shops as a high percentage of consumer sales are made at this time. Selectus Wines is, of course, here to assist you with your Christmas selection.

AVANZANDO HACIA UN FUTURO MEJOR… … al menos es la sensación que vamos teniendo

poco a poco en el sector. Con el incremento gradual de personas que podemos ir al restaurante, la ampliación horaria, la disminución, en general, de las restricciones, parece que volveremos, algún día que esperemos no sea muy lejano, a la situación pre-pandemia. Se empiezan a realizar actividades diversas (press trips, convocatorias, comidas para presentar nuevos vinos y/o añadas,…) y se están preparando ya ferias relacionadas con el vino (Barcelona Wine Week, Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris, Vinitaly,…) lo cual es bueno para todo lo relacionado con el mundo vinícola.

Esperemos que no paremos de avanzar en este sentido.

Pero la actualidad manda y todo el sector está ya focalizado en la campaña de Navidad. Es un momento clave para bodegas, distribuidores, tiendas, …, ya que un porcentaje elevado de sus ventas al consumidor final se realizan en esta época del año. Por nuestra parte, les propondremos diferentes opciones para que puedan elegir.

Additionally, we bring you two interesting interviews: one with Codorníu’s winemaker, Bruno Colomer, who kindly gave us an hour of his time while on vacation, and the other with one of the head honchos at OIVE (The Spanish Wine Board).

INTERVIEW

Born in Sant Cugat del Vallés, Bruno Colomer is the winemaker at Codorníu. We interviewed him just 15 days before the harvest was set to begin.

He took an hour out from his vacation to talk with us and given the current circumstances, the interview was done over the phone.

Nacido en Sant Cugat del Vallés, Bruno Colomer, es el Enólogo de Codorníu. Quedaban unos 15 días para empezar la vendimia en el momento de hacer esta entrevista. SW: Who is Bruno Colomer?

Where does he come from?

BC: He is the winemaker at Codorníu. Born 57 years ago in Sant Cugat del Vallés to a family that worked in the textile industry. He didn't want to join the family business. I like nature, the environment, and I started studying agriculture in Barcelona, without thinking about my future or where I would end up. At that time, one of my professors was Juan José de Castro, the former winemaker at Codorníu, who introduced me to the world of wine. Back then (1988), in Spain, there were some wine training courses, but you couldn't study oenology, and, at the advice of Jaume Gramona, I decided to go abroad, specifically to Dijon. There I studied all types of wine. I did an internship in the Champagne region and when I got back, I started to work right away and my first harvest was at Cavas Nadal, where I worked for 6 years. Then I was at Mont-Ferrant for 10 years, two years at Mas Tinell, and now I've been at Codorníu for 14, and I’m really happy and very busy there (laughter).

Your career has been very focused on sparkling wines... but you’ve also worked on still wines...

When I was at Mont-Ferrant, we had a project where we made a wine at third-party wineries. We made a wine in the Alba region (Italy) and another in Cigales and in Penedés. The idea was to rotate areas. I changed jobs, but the project continued for a while.

14 years at Codorníu... What makes Codorníu different from other wineries in Penedés and Spain?

Codorníu, especially for Catalan people, is a company that runs in our blood, it's part of our culture. We’ll be celebrating our 500th anniversary soon.

My grandparents drank Codorníu. I have a bill from the 1930s from my grandfather’s stag night. He had invited 34 friends, and the bill lists 34 meals, some bottles of Château d’Yquem and bottles of Extra de Codorníu.

At Codorníu, you control the entire process, starting from the vineyard. It’s a company that means a lot to those of us who work there, those of us who know it. It’s full of history.

We have modernist buildings and beautiful gardens. When you travel the world, people recognise you and it's very gratifying. When your business card says Codorníu, lots of doors are opened for you.

How does Codorníu operate? You’re in charge of the winery, but you must have a team working for you.

To answer this question, I’ll give you a comparison.

When I was working at a smaller company (Mas Tinell), I was in charge of the contracts with the winegrowers, monitoring ripeness, organising grape deliveries, operations in the winery, the analyses, the Christmas gifts.... Now it’s the same, but instead of one person, we have several teams: viticulture, winery, production, quality... And that’s how we organise ourselves. In each department, there’s an oenologist who's in charge of that part of the production process.

SW: ¿Quién es Bruno Colomer? ¿Cuáles son sus orígenes?

BC: Es el enólogo de Codorníu. Hijo de Sant Cugat del Vallés hace 57 años en una familia dedicada al mundo textil. No quise seguir la empresa familiar. Me gusta la naturaleza, el medio ambiente, y empecé a estudiar Agrónomos en Barcelona, sin pensar cuál sería mi futuro ni dónde acabaría. En aquella época uno de los profesores era Juan José de Castro, antiguo enólogo de Codorníu, que es quien me hizo conocer el mundo del vino. En aquella época (1988), en España existían algunos cursos sobre vinos, pero no se podía estudiar enología, y decidí irme fuera del país, concretamente a Dijon, aconsejado por Jaume Gramona. Allí estudié sobre todo tipo de vinos. Hice prácticas en la zona de Champagne y al volver, enseguida empecé a trabajar y mi primera vendimia fue en Cavas Nadal, donde estuve 6 años. Luego estuve durante 10 años en Mont-Ferrant, 2 años en Mas Tinell, y ahora llevo 14 en Codorníu, donde soy plenamente feliz y donde estoy plenamente ocupado (risas).

Tu trayectoria está muy focalizada en los vinos espumosos… pero en algún momento has elaborado vinos tranquilos…

Cuando estuve en Mont-Ferrant hacíamos un proyecto en el que hacíamos un vino en casa de terceros. Hacíamos un vino en la zona de Alba (Italia) y otro en la zona de Cigales y en el Penedés. La intención era ir cambiando de zonas de forma rotativa. Yo cambié de trabajo y el proyecto siguió adelante durante un tiempo.

14 años en Codorníu… ¿Qué hace diferente a Codorníu del resto de bodegas del Penedés y de España?

Codorníu, sobre todo para los catalanes, es una empresa que se lleva en el corazón, forma parte de tu cultura.

Pronto celebraremos los 500 años de existencia.

Mis abuelos ya bebían Codorníu. Tengo guardada una factura de los años 30, que corresponde a la despedida de soltero de mi abuelo. Había invitado a 34 amigos y en la factura se detallan 34 cubiertos, algunas botellas de Château d´Yquem y botellas de Extra de Codorníu.

En Codorníu controlas todo el proceso, desde el viñedo.

Es una empresa muy emotiva para los que estamos, los que la conocemos. Está cargada de historia. Edificios modernistas, fabulosos jardines. Cuando vas por el mundo, todos te conocen y es muy gratificante. Siendo la misma persona, cuando en tu tarjeta de presentación pone Codorníu, se te abren muchas más puertas.

Estamos a punto de una nueva vendimia, la segunda en plena pandemia. ¿Cómo se gestionó el año pasada vendimia y cómo afectó a todo el proceso de recolección?

Te diré que este año, como tenemos el aprendizaje de la escuela del pasado año no deja de ser menos importante que el pasado año, pero sí que ya tenemos más información. Estamos en una etapa más suave, el personal está vacunado, no vamos tan asustados. Pero seguimos tomando muchas medidas por la seguridad de todos. Cuando los tractores vienen a la bodega, el uso de la mascarilla es obligatorio y no pueden bajar del tractor.

Con respecto al personal de bodega, intentamos crear burbujas, entradas y salidas independientes, lavado de manos continuamente. Es una etapa dura porque hace mucho calor, la humedad en bodega es importante,… se hace duro. Pero el año pasado, no tuvimos ningún caso. Habíamos hablado con otras bodegas por si en algún momento se producía un brote, tener alternativas para seguir entrando las uvas durante la vendimia. Las conversaciones fueron recíprocas.

Volvamos a la actualidad más cercana. En pocos días/ semanas, empezará una nueva vendimia. ¿Cómo se presenta la cosecha 2021?

Mejor que el año pasado. Son dos años muy raros. El año pasado tuvimos un ataque de míldiu, muy importante, que redujo la producción por hectárea muchísimo. Se redujo cerca de un 35% la producción. Este año es un año sequísimo, en el que hay parcelas en las que no ha caído ni una gota de agua. No tenemos míldiu, teníamos una producción fantástica, pero con tanta sequía hay granos de uva que no van a evolucionar correctamente, por lo que también tendremos una reducción de la cosecha, que podría ser del 25%, pero que hay que ver cómo evoluciona.

Estamos vigilantes.

¿Cómo trabajáis en Codorníu? Tú eres el máximo responsable de la bodega, pero damos por sentado que tienes un equipo bajo tu responsabilidad.

Para contestar esta pregunta te haré una comparativa.

Cuando estaba en una empresa pequeña (Mas Tinell) yo me encargaba de hacer los contratos con los viticultores, los seguimientos de maduración, organizar las entradas de uva, los movimientos en bodega, los análisis, los lotes de Navidad,… ahora es lo mismo, pero en lugar de una sola persona son varios equipos: viticultura, bodega, tiraje, calidad,… y nos organizamos de esta forma. En cada una de las áreas hay un enólogo como responsable de esa parte del proceso productivo.

A new harvest is just around the corner, the second during the pandemic. How did you manage the harvest last year, and how did the pandemic affect the harvesting process?

I’d say that this year, we have some lessons learned from last year; it’s still just as important as last year, but now we do have more information. We're in an easier phase; our staff is vaccinated, we're not as worried. But we're still taking many measures to ensure everyone’s safety.

When the tractors arrive at the winery, the drivers must be wearing a mask and they can’t get down off the tractor. When it comes to the winery staff, we are trying to create “bubbles” and have people enter and exit at different times, and we encourage constant handwashing.

It’s a difficult time because it’s very hot, there’s a lot of humidity in the winery... It’s hard. But we didn’t have any cases of Covid last year. We had talked to other wineries in case we had an outbreak, to have a backup to enable us to continue bringing in the grapes during the harvest.

The conversations were reciprocal.

Let's return to the present. In a few days/weeks, a new harvest will begin. How is the 2021 vintage looking?

In addition to planning for these types of issues, what other plans for future growth does the company have?

Any changes for the upcoming Christmas campaign?

In September we're going to present the new Cuvée Original Rosado, and now we’re launching the 2010 vintage of the Ars Collecta Codorníu 459.

Codorníu made a huge leap in quality a few years ago with the presentation of the Ars Collecta collection.

What did this step forward within the sector mean for Codorníu? Are you positioning yourselves to compete with champagne?

I respect champagne very much. In the world of cava, there's been a very significant advance in the knowledge of how to craft a cava that ages with dignity. We're learning how to make cavas that still have a lot of vitality after many years of ageing. You have to carry out a good selection in the vineyards to achieve this. In 2007, with Ars Collecta, we realised that we could make a long-ageing cava. But we’ve been learning how to do it over time.

Better than last year. We’ve had two very odd years. Last year we had a very significant attack of mildew, which greatly reduced our production per hectare. It reduced production by close to 35%. This has been a very dry year, and there are some plots where not a drop of water fell. We didn’t have any mildew, our production was high, but with such a drought some grapes are not going to develop correctly and so we'll also have a reduced harvest; there could be a reduction of 25%, but we’ll have to see how it evolves. We’re keeping an eye on it.

Related to the harvest, climate change is something that is of concern in general, but particularly for the wine industry. What is different today, compared to 15-20 years ago?

We start the harvest later (7 to 10 days). The grapes ripen very quickly. I would say the quality is the same.

The winters aren't as harsh. The seasons of the year are shorter.

It seems to be a future reality that we'll have to look for land at higher altitude, where it’s cooler, to plant vineyards that resist the higher temperatures that seem to be headed our way. At Codorníu, are you thinking about acquiring land at higher altitudes to mitigate the possible disappearance of vineyards that can’t cope with the higher temperatures predicted for the future?

For cava, it’s difficult. Let's remember that one of the first articles of the designation of origin delimits the area by municipality. We’re working with Macabeo, Xarel·lo, and Parellada, which are very drought-resistant varieties, and our grapes are very good. We don't see a reason to make that change. If we had Chardonnay in Penedés, we’d most likely be thinking about moving to different areas, but since we bring that variety in from the Raimat region, where there's a big change in temperature that gives the grape its great ageing potential, we're not thinking about looking for other vineyards.

Relacionado con las cosechas, el tema del cambio climático es algo que preocupa en general, pero en el sector vitivinícola en particular. ¿Qué hay de diferente en la actualidad vs 15-20 años atrás?

Empezamos más tarde a vendimiar (una semana a 10 días). La uva madura muy rápido. La calidad, diría que es la misma. Los inviernos son más suaves. Las estaciones del año se están acortando.

Parece una realidad futura que se tendrán que buscar terrenos de más altitud, más frescos, para plantar viñedos que resistan las temperaturas que parece que vendrán en el futuro. En Codorníu ¿contemplan la adquisición de terrenos elevados para paliar la posible desaparición de viñedos que no aguanten las altas temperaturas que se preveen en el futuro?

En el caso del cava es difícil. Recordemos que uno de los primeros artículos de la denominación de origen es la delimitación por municipios. Nosotros estamos trabajando con Macabeo, Xarel·lo y Parellada, que son variedades muy resistentes a la sequía y nuestras uvas son muy buenas. No vemos un motivo para buscar ese cambio. Si tuviéramos Chardonnay en el Penedés, seguramente nos plantearíamos ir a otras zonas, pero como esta variedad nosotros la traemos de la zona de Raimat, donde hay un gran salto térmico que es lo que le da a la uva un gran potencial para envejecer muy bien.

No pensamos en ir a buscar otros viñedos.

Además de planificar cuestiones como éstas, de cara al futuro, ¿qué otros planes de crecimiento tiene la empresa? ¿Alguna novedad de cara a la próxima campaña navideña?

En Septiembre vamos a presentar el nuevo Cuvée Original Rosado y ahora estamos lanzando el Ars Collecta Codorníu 459 de la añada 2010.

Codorníu dio un salto cualitativo con la presentación, hace unos años, de la colección Ars Collecta. ¿Qué ha supuesto para Codorníu ese paso al frente en el sector? ¿Es también un posicionamiento frente al Champagne?

Respeto muchísimo el Champagne. En el mundo del cava ha habido un avance muy importante de conocimiento de cómo hacer un cava que envejezca con dignidad.Estamos aprendiendo a cómo hacer cavas con mucha vitalidad después de muchos años de envejecimiento. Hay que hacer una buena selección en el viñedo para conseguir esto. En Ars Collecta, en el 2007, nos dimos cuenta que podíamos hacer cava de largo envejecimiento. Pero lo hemos ido aprendiendo con el tiempo.

For a few years now, the cava sector has been experiencing an ongoing “internal revolution” with the appearance of Clàssic Penedés and subsequently Corpinnat. How does this affect the cava sector? How do you feel about all of these developments?

I think here we’ve all erred a bit. At Codorníu we champion cava. I’m sorry that some producers have left the D.O., but I hope someday they will come back. Right now, I think there are good wines from all over. But it's not good for the sector, as it confuses the consumer.

This question might be a bit uncomfortable, but I have to ask. Personally, when I go to the supermarket, I almost always check out the wine and sparkling wine aisles (as you do in our line of work) and it makes me sad to see cavas selling at absurdly low prices. I get the feeling that cava “doesn’t love itself” and that the priority is to sell, even if it’s at clearance prices. Is this a problem for the sector? Does it devalue cava's image with the consumer?

What will it take to give cava greater prestige in the world?

It is sad. The prices are what they are, and the designation of origin cannot mandate a minimum price. In this harvest, new regulations are coming into effect for a series of measures that will ensure that the product label includes all of the minimum characteristics required for that product to be called cava. But this isn’t a problem just for cava... In Bordeaux, they also have this issue with pricing.

And let’s finish off with more personal, but not too personal of a, question... What legacy would you like to leave within the world of cava, and at Codorníu specifically, on the day you retire? How would you like to be remembered?

I want people to think that I worked for quality and the cava designation of origin.

You’ve received several awards and recognitions over your professional career. Which are you most proud of?

There was one recently that really meant a lot to me. The Bacchus awards recognised me as the “Best sparkling winemaker.” That is, of course, a boost to my personal ego, but above all, helps bring prestige to Codorníu.

That’s because the company provides me with the means to do things well. Without good grapes and a good team, this wouldn’t be possible.

Of which wine that you’ve made are you the proudest?

There’s one that I like a lot. Codorníu Non Plus Ultra.

After over 125 years, in the 2017 harvest, we made a small change. We respected the recipe, but we carried out the selection in the vineyards. We selected the best grapes. Macabeo in the Montserrat region, Xarel.lo in the Foix area, and in Garraf, Parellada from Pla de Manlleu.

Only with this change to the selection of the grapes, there was a major leap in quality. And I also really like the Blanc de Blancs and the Grand Rosé from the Ars Collecta collection.

El sector del cava hace unos pocos años que está bajo una contínua “revolución interna” con la aparición de los Clàssic Penedés y posteriormente con la aparición de Corpinnat. ¿Cómo afecta esto al sector del cava? ¿qué sensaciones te transmiten todos estos movimientos?

Creo que en esto hemos fallado todos un poco. Desde Codorníu somos defensores del cava. Lamento que algunos colectivos se hayan ido, pero espero que algún día vuelvan. De momento creo que hay buenos vinos en todas partes. Pero no es bueno para el sector ya que despista al consumidor.

Quizás esta pregunta sea un poco incómoda, pero nos vemos en la obligación de hacerla. Yo, particularmente, cuando voy a comprar al supermercado, por defecto profesional, me acerco casi siempre a los lineales de vinos, espumosos,… y me da mucha pena encontrarme con cavas a precios irrisorios. Me da la sensación de que el cava “no se quiere a sí mismo” y que la cuestión es vender, aunque sea a precios de derribo. ¿No es esto un problema para el sector? ¿No devalúa la imagen del cava ante el consumidor? ¿Qué hay que hacer para prestigiar el cava ante el mundo?

Es una pena. Los precios son los que son y la denominación de origen no puede obligar a poner un precio mínimo.

En esta vendimia se pone en marcha la nueva normativa para poner una serie de condicionantes para que en la etiqueta del producto aparezcan las características mínimas requeridas para que ese producto se denomine cava. Pero no es un problema exclusivo del cava… en Burdeos también tienen este problema con los precios.

Y vamos acabando con cuestiones más personales, que no íntimas…

¿Qué legado le gustaría dejar, dentro del mundo del cava, y de Codorníu en concreto, el día que se jubile? ¿Cómo le gustaría que le recordasen?

Que piense la gente que he trabajado por la calidad y la denominación de origen cava.

Usted ha recibido diversos galardones y reconocimientos a lo largo de su carrera profesional. ¿De cuál se siente más orgulloso?

Ha habido uno últimamente que me ha hecho mucha ilusión. Los premios Bacchus me reconocieron como “Mejor enólogo para espumosos”. Esto me ayuda al ego personal, pero sobretodo ayuda a dar renombre a Codorníu. Es porque la casa me da medios para hacerlo bien. Sin tener buenas uvas y un buen equipo, esto no sería posible.

¿Y de qué vino se siente más orgulloso de los que ha elaborado?

Hay uno que me gusta mucho. Codorníu Non Plus Ultra.

Después de más de 125 años, en la vendimia del 2017 hicimos un pequeño cambio. Respetamos la receta pero la selección la hicimos en el viñedo. Seleccionamos las mejores uvas. Macabeo en la zona de Montserrat, la Xarel.lo en la zona de Foix y en Garraf, Parellada en Pla de Manlleu. Sólo con este cambio en la selección de las uvas se produjo un salto importante de calidad. Y también me gustan mucho el Blanc de Blancs y el Grand Rosé de la colección Ars Collecta.

CHARDONNAY Most of us would automatically associate the Chardonnay grape with Burgundy, but wine lovers also know that this varietal can be found all over the world. Because of its chameleon-like character, we are able to enjoy Chardonnay in still, sparkling, and even sweet wines.

Its ability to adapt means that it can be found on any continent in the world and, of course, Chardonnay is a "brand" that sells wherever it is planted. I would venture to say that it is one of the most popular grape varieties in the world. Let's also not forget that the most select and expensive white wine in the world is made from Chardonnay and comes from the Montrachet vineyards. Champagnes, whether Blanc de Blancs or blends, are also among the fine wines made from this varietal. This elite club of high-end wines is not just found in France, it extends to the USA, where the Chardonnay is still on the ascendant, especially in California. There, the prices of some Chardonnay wines are similar to the Burgundy Grands Crus. Although oak does not always suit this varietal, I personally like it. The extra muscle and drying effect that the oak brings endow the wines with good ageing potential. But, to be honest, what I really like is being able to detect the influence of the oak on the wine. In any case, the journey you are about to embark on through the following tasting notes does not only take you to different continents and countries. The common thread is the Chardonnay, of course, but we shall also be looking at the different types of wines it creates as well as its typical aromas and flavours. I hope you enjoy this report and that it helps you to enjoy the Chardonnay even more, if that were possible.

Aunque muchos de vosotros situáis la uva Chardonnay en

la Bourgogne también sabréis que podemos encontrarla en cualquier parte del mundo. Su camaleónica virtud hace que podamos disfrutar tanto de vinos tranquilos como espumosos y, hasta dulces, de esta variedad. Su poder de adaptación hace que la encontremos en cualquier continente del mundo y, es que Chardonnay, es marca y vende esté donde esté plantada. Me atrevería a decir que a nivel internacional es una de las uvas más cotizadas del mundo. Recordemos que el vino blanco más selecto y caro del planeta elaborado con Chardonnay sale de la finca Montrachet. Los Champagnes, ya sean Blanc de Blancs o de coupage, también están en la cúspide de los vinos más selectos de todas las zonas del mundo. Este selecto club de vinos (los más importantes del mundo) no solo están en Francia, en los EEUU, la Chardonnay, también se cotiza a la alza sobre todo en zonas de California. Allí los precios de los vinos se asemejan a los grandes vinos de la Bourgogne con el distintivo Grand Cru. Aunque no siempre la madera le sienta bien a la Chardonnay, en mi opinión, es como más me gusta. El músculo y elemento secante que le aporta la barrica hace de los vinos buenos aliados del paso del tiempo y, sobre todo, poder percibir la parte que la barrica le imprime me parece magnífico. Sea como fuere, el viaje que van a emprender a continuación no solo pasa por distintos continentes y países. El hilo conductor es la Chardonnay y es perfecta para explicar sus distintas elaboraciones así como los aromas y gustos que esta variedad esconde. Espero que disfruten del texto y más si pueden de la Chardonnay.

This business created in the '90s has successfully evolved and adapted over the ensuing years. Its Chardonnay, a young wine, shows the full potential of the varietal, revealing great intensity of fruit with hints of citrus and tropical fruit. Broad and well balanced, the Idrias Chardonnay pairs particularly well with smoked fish as its fruity freshness balances the smoky sensation of the fish.

VIÑAS DE ANNA CHARDONNAY 2020 · CODORNÍU

D.O. Catalunya / Sant Sadurní d´Anoia, Barcelona - Spain / www.codorniu.com / P.V.P.: 7,50€ / 13,50º This selection of Chardonnay wines would not be complete without a wine from Codorníu. On this occasion, we tried its Viñas de Anna, a wine made mainly from Chardonnay. The nose is aromatic and intense with an explosion of citrus aromas: lime, grapefruit and green apple. The palate is refreshing and delicate. This Chardonnay will pair well with a wide array of dishes but will work particularly well at the start of a meal, i.e. served with some appetisers.

En una selección de vinos elaborados con Chardonnay, no podía faltar un vino de la casa Codorníu.

En esta ocasión os vamos a hablar de Viñas de Anna, un vino elaborado mayoritariamente con Chardonnay y que a nivel de nariz encontramos una explosión de aromas cítricos: lima, pomelo y manzana verde. El vino es aromático e intenso. En boca el vino es refrescante y delicado. Esta Chardonnay nos da para combinar con infinidad de platos pero, eso sí, al inicio de un encuentro, es decir, con los aperitivos.

VIÑAS DEL VERO CHARDONNAY 2020 · VIÑAS DEL VERO

D.O. Somontano / Huesca - Spain / www.vinasdelvero.es / P.V.P.: 7,60€ / 13,50º Today, Viñas del Vero is one of the pioneering wineries in the Somontano D.O. I recall that the Somontano D.O. exploded under the Viñas del Vero name in the early 2000s and since then, it has remained a quality reference within the same D.O. Its Chardonnay is a young, direct, refreshing and flavoursome wine. Its nose reveals pineapple, banana, guava and mango aromas. The palate is tasty, dense, well-structured, round, enveloping and long.

Viñas del Vero representa a día de hoy una de las bodegas pioneras de la DO Somontano.

Recuerdo que la D.O. Somontano explotó con Viñas del Vero como denominación de origen a principios de los años 2000 y desde entonces, siempre se ha mantenido como ejemplo de vino de calidad dentro de la misma D.O. Su Chardonnay, es un vino joven, directo, refrescante y sabroso. Piña, plátano, guayaba y mango en nariz son sus aromas. En boca es un vino sabroso, denso, estructurado, redondo, envolvente y largo.

The Chardonnay grape variety is present here producing wines of character and above all power. Its Chardonnay, part of the Premium wines range, benefits from 6 months ageing in American oak barrels.

Aromatically, it offers up surprising floral and candied citrus notes. On the palate, it is an absolute joy as its unctuousness fills the mouth and allows the aromatic notes to be more clearly appreciated. This wine is refined, long and sapid.

Por muchos es sabido que la D.O. Cariñena, es una de las zonas históricas del panorama nacional vitícola. En este sentido la variedad de uva Chardonnay está presente y da vinos con carácter y sobre todo potencia. Su Chardonnay pertenece a la gamma de vinos Premium y se elabora con un paso de 6 meses en barricas de roble americano.

Aromáticamente sorprenden sus notas florales y de cítricos confitados. En boca es un gozo ya que su untuosidad llena la boca permitiendo percibir las notas aromáticas en boca. Es un vino refinado, largo y sápido.

EL ALBA CHARDONNAY 2020 · FINCA ALBRET

D.O. Navarra / Cadreita, Navarra - Spain / www.fincaalbret.com / P.V.P.: 12,00€ / 13,00º Bodegas Albret is the reflection of the terroir in the bottle and El Alba is a wine that comes from vines growing in slightly pebbly sandy loam soil. It boasts textbook Chardonnay aromas, ripe white fruit, candied citrus, floral aromas and hints of sweet spices from the barrels in which the wine ferments and ages for 6 months. This wine is already making waves due to its superb quality and it will soon, no doubt, become a reference from the region.

Bodegas Albret, es el reflejo del terruño dentro de la copa y, en consecuencia, El Alba es un vino que nace de unas viñas en terreno franco arenoso con influencia de piedras de canto rodado.

El Alba es un vino con aromas a Chardonnay de libro, frutas blancas maduras, cítricos confitados, aromas florales y recueros a especias dulces aportadas por las barricas donde el vino fermenta y envejece durante 6 meses. The notes are typically Chardonnay, citrus and floral with white fruit aromas. This wine has a slightly fat mouthfeel but is very elegant and creamy. It is perfect for enjoying with friends at sundown or for serving with some appetisers before dinner.

It works particularly well with charcuterie, cheeses, patés and duck foie gras.

Después de fermentar y pasar unos cinco meses en barricas de roble francés, el Noc es un vino que se presenta de color amarillo intenso con reflejos dorados. Las notas son típicas de un Chardonnay, aromas a fruta blanca, cítricos y florales. Un vino con cierta sensación grasa en boca pero muy elegante y untuoso. Ideal para compartir con amigos en un atardecer así como beber en el inicio de una cena con diferentes aperitivos. Sobre todo de embutidos, quesos, patés y foie de pato.

El proyecto de Blas Muñoz en Noblejas (Toledo), es un buen ejemplo de la adpatación de varietales internacionales en La Mancha. Sus viñas plantadas sobre terreno arcillo calcáreo y con un clima continental ofrece a las viñas el microclima ideal para obtener vinos francos y nobles.

Its enticing nose reveals an intense aromatic complexity and, above all, is very perfumed. On the palate, the wine shows all the potential and aromas that we detected on the nose. Blaneo's leaves us with a powerful yet well-balanced finish with light toasty aromas.

Pagos de Araiz, se encuentra a las afueras de Olite (Navarra). Su extensión, es de 240 ha y en ellas podemos encontrar distintas variedades. Su Chardonnay llamado Blaneo y de color amarillo pajizo, fermenta en tinos de 500 litros y después se cría en las mismas barricas donde ha fermentado. Complejidad aromática, intensidad de aromas y sobre todo perfume seducen en nariz. En cuanto al paso de boca es un vino que nos muestra en boca todo el potencial y aromas que hemos percibido en nariz. Equilibrado pero potente con ligeros aromas tostados es el fin de boca que Blaneo nos deja.

Vallejo Avenas is a Chardonnay that has been fermented and aged in French oak barrels with a production of around 8,000 bottles. It is a real gem from the winery, fresh and silky on entry, showing a certain unctuosity, nice acidity and a well-structured and balanced palate that leads to a long finish. Notes of ripe white fruit and a sensation of creaminess come through again in the aftertaste.

El patrimonio cultural vitivinícola que tiene Bodegas Murviedro empieza a finales del S XIX en Suiza bajo el nombre de Bodegas Schenk. Hoy dos siglos, más tarde, no se entiende la historia de la D.O. The latest addition to its wine portfolio is this Turons de la Pleta. The winemaking process begins with a skin maceration (infusion of the skins with the must) followed by a lowtemperature fermentation, the end of which takes place in an oak foudre with a light toast. Over the ensuing 12 months, the wine's fine lees are stirred (bâtonnage) in the same oak vat. This is a wine with great cellar ageing potential.

Part of the must ferments in 300-litre French oak barrels previously used for 1 or 2 fills and the rest of the must remains on its fine lees in stainless steel vats maintained at a low temperature. The result is a wine with a great balance between its varietal notes (white fruit and citrus) and the notes derived from its ageing (vanilla and butter).

Situado en el Vendrell, en la zona sur de la DO Penedés. Avgvtvs Forum, es el ejemplo de que los clásicos no pasan de moda ya que elaboran este Chardonnay Fermentado en barrica des del año 1991. Una parte del mosto, fermenta en barricas de roble francés de 300 litros de primer y segundo año y la otra parte del vino final permanece en depósitos de acero con las lías finas a baja temperatura. Today Sommos is also known for its obsession with the quality of its wines as demonstrated by its gravity-fed operations, its optically-assisted grape sorting and its research into indigenous yeasts. Yellow tropical fruit with soft toasted hazelnut and vanilla on the nose is followed by a smooth, well-balanced palate with a long, lingering acidity. This wine is complex and elegant.

A dia de hoy podemos afirmar que Sommos, es el proyecto más moderno del Somontano. Esta afirmación no solo la decimos por la estructura de su moderna bodega, si no que su trabajo por gravedad, la selección de uva por selección óptica y su estudio en levaduras autóctonas hacen que a día de hoy Sommos sea conocida no solo por la edificación de la bodega si no por la obsesión en la calidad de sus vinos. In 1934, Louis Latour was among the pioneers in the marketing of this remarkable wine and today it is one of the most sought-after AOCs from Southern Burgundy. The vines planted in limestone and coarse clay soils produce wines with remarkable aromas of ripe white fruit (apple) and stone fruit (apricot). Elegant and long on the palate.

Para aquellos que no conozcáis la zona de Pouilly Fuisse, ésta se encuentra al oeste de Mâcon (en la zona sur de la Bourgogne). Louis Latour en el año 1934 fue uno de los pioneros en comercializar esta referencia de vinos y a día de hoy es una de las etiquetas más solicitadas de la parte sur de Bourgogne. Las viñas que reposan sobre suelos de piedra caliza y arcilla gruesa dan vinos con unas notables aromas a frutas blancas maduras (manzana) así como las que recuerdan a las de hueso (albaricoque). Su paso de boca es largo y elegante.

The Grand Regnard is a textbook Chablis. Aromatically, we have notes reminiscent of green apples followed by some citrus overtones. On the palate, Regnard is fresh with some iodine notes that reflect the chalky clay soil in which the Chardonnay vines are planted. This wine would make an excellent pairing with oysters.

Estamos delante de un gran clásico que seguro que al ver la botella sabéis de que vino hablamos.

El Grand Regnard, es un Chablis de libro. Aromáticamente tenemos sensaciones a manzana verde seguido de notas a cítricos. En boca, el Regnard es fresco con ciertos recuerdos a yodados ligeros que nos recuerdan el terreno arcillo calcáreo donde reposan la viñas de Chardonnay.

The wine ages for a few months in new and used French oak barrels that impart backbone and flavour. What is particularly remarkable about this wine is the impression of fat it gives you on the palate. It is a flavoursome wine with aromas of white fruit combined with sweet spices making it a perfect match for seafood dishes in particular.

LLEGAT FAMILIAR, THE STORY OF WINEMAKING OVER 26 GENERATIONS Llopart presenta Llegat Familiar, la historia de 26 generaciones hecha vino Subirats, 14 October 2021.

Llopart presents its longest-aged sparkling wine, Llegat Familiar, which has undergone more than 13 years of ageing. Llegat Familiar is a tribute to Pere and Jacinta, the parents of the Llopart generation running the winery today. It is a homage to the “honesty, perseverance and passion with which they have preserved and passed on the traditional knowledge of a lifetime dedicated to the harmonious transformation of the fruit of the land”. Llegat Familiar is the culmination of a long history and an apprenticeship as well as the expression of the terroir and the unique character of the vineyards in which the Xarel·lo grows.

The first vintage of Llegat Familiar is the 2007, with only 980 bottles produced.

Llegat Familiar 2007 is a single varietal Xarel·lo from a single vineyard, the Paulino vineyard. This is the oldest vineyard in Can Llopart, with less than one hectare of vines planted back in 1935. To obtain the perfect balance between sweetness and acidity, the grapes were harvested by hand on 15 September. After the second fermentation, the wine was cellar aged in bottles for over 13 years, during which time the bottles were given a "coup de poignée", i.e. riddled, on several occasions to encourage greater contact between the wine and its lees, thereby enhancing the autolysis process of the yeasts and the transfer of their organoleptic characteristics to the wine. Llegat Familiar then rests in the cellar for a minimum of 6 months after its disgorgement in a subtle refining process that allows the wine to recover from the disgorgement operation. This period of rest encourages the future expression of all the nuances and textures that the wine has acquired over the years.

The current generation at the winery’s helm consists of the five siblings, Imma, Assumpta, Josep Maria, Pere and Jesi Llopart, who represent the 26th generation since 1385, the year when Bernardus Leopardi inherited the family farmhouse and where, centuries later, the first bottle of Llopart sparkling wine was made in 1887.

Con este espumoso de más de 13 años de crianza, la bodega rinde homenaje a los padres de la actual generación.

Llopart presenta su espumoso de más larga crianza, el Llegat Familiar, con más de 13 años de reposo. Llegat Familiar nace como homenaje a Pere y Jacinta, los padres de la actual generación, un tributo a la “honradez, constancia y pasión con que han preservado y transmitido los conocimientos tradicionales de toda una vida dedicada a la transformación armoniosa del fruto de la tierra”. Es un vino que es la culminación de toda una historia, de un aprendizaje y la expresión del terruño, de la singularidad de los viñedos en los que crece la Xarel·lo.

La primera añada de Llegat Familiar en ver la luz es 2007, en una edición de 980 botellas. Llegat Familiar 2007 es un vino monovarietal de Xarel·lo de una sola viña: la viña de Paulino. Menos de una hectárea de cepas plantadas en el año 1935, siendo la viña más vieja de Can Llopart. La vendimia se realizó a mano el 15 de septiembre, buscando el momento exacto de equilibrio entre el dulzor y la acidez. Tras la segunda fermentación, las botellas han tenido una crianza superior a 13 años en rima, durante los cuales se ha realizado en diversas ocasiones el "coup de poignée", para potenciar el contacto entre el vino y las madres y así mejorar la autolisis de las levaduras y la cesión de sus rasgos organolépticos al vino. Llegat Familiar reposa en bodega durante un mínimo de 6 meses después del degüelle, en un sutil afinado que devuelve la calma al vino y favorece la futura expresión de la riqueza de matices y texturas que han ido adquiriendo a lo largo del tiempo.

La generación actual al frente de la bodega está formada por los cinco hermanos Imma, Assumpta, Josep Maria, Pere y Jesi Llopart, que representan la vigesimosexta desde que Bernardus Leopardi heredara la masía familiar en 1385, lugar donde siglos más tarde se elaboró la primera botella de vino espumoso Llopart, en 1887.

Next month, on 9 October 2021, Sotheby’s will present The Art of Living: Legendary Wines from the Cellar of Pierre Chen, as part of its Hong Kong Autumn Sale Series. Centred around the finest wines from Bordeaux, Burgundy and beyond, the sale provides a first glimpse into his extraordinary collection of wines, amassed over thirty years. The collection is further distinguished by Magnums of Faiveley Musigny in vintages spanning 2015 to 2017, produced from Chen’s very own vineyard in Burgundy and here making their first ever appearance at auction. Charting the evolution of Chen’s varied tastes over the years, the sale also shines a light on his passion for matching food with wine.

Centrada en los mejores vinos de Burdeos, Borgoña y más allá, la venta ofrece, a primera vista, su extraordinaria colección de vinos, acumulada durante treinta años. La colección se distingue, entre otras cosas, por Magnums de Faiveley Musigny en añadas que abarcan desde 2015 hasta 2017, producidas en el viñedo propio de Chen en Borgoña y que por primera vez aparecen en una subasta. The collection also includes over one hundred lots of wines from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, rare and great vintages including Petrus, all of the First Growths from Bordeaux, and Burgundy gems - Henri Jayer, Leroy, Armand Rousseau, and Leflaive, among others. Chen describes each bottle as having its own magic, “... the power to relive wonderful moments through a single sip.”

Pierre Chen undoubtedly amassed a dictionary of The Best, from all the expressions of Dom Pérignon, including Oenothèque vintages and Dom Pérignon P3, to red and white Burgundy featuring an array of Grands Crus from the most revered producers such as Leroy, Faiveley, Dujac, Ponsot and Jayer, the latter with vintages of Vosne-Romanée Cros Parantoux fanning out over the decades and mostly in Magnums spanning 1978 to 1999.

Located on a bend of the Duero River, it covers 110 hectares, 64 of which are vineyards and the rest made up a magnificent 200-year-old forest of black pines and stone pines. From these vineyards and its 15 plots of Tempranillo, Merlot and Cabernet, come wines that are a real case study, including Pruno, recognised as the best value-for-money wine in the world by Robert Parker. It is joined by other icons from the winery such as Nebro or Specimen.

As part of its ethos, Finca Villacreces seeks to respect everything that Nature provides as much as possible: a unique vineyard, age-old pine trees, the Duero River, native flora and fauna... This commitment to protecting the environment has led to the achievement of the Wineries for Climate Protection certification this year.

This scheme, the most important scheme promoted by the Spanish Wine Federation (FEV), has wide international recognition. WfCP is the only official certification that recognises those wineries committed to sustainability and the environment.

AN ECOLOGICAL OASIS

The winery, which is part of the Artevino Family Wineries owned by the Antón family, can boast of being one of the largest organically worked estates in Valladolid. In fact, it has just presented the latest vintage of the wine that bears the winery's name: The 2018 Finca Villacreces with organic certification. This is the first time the organic statement has appeared on the label.

Situada sobre un meandro del Duero, se extiende por 110 hectáreas de las cuales 64 son de viñedo y el resto de un magnífico pinar bicentenario de pino negro y pino piñonero.

De estos viñedos, de sus 15 parcelas de Tempranillo, Merlot y Cabernet, nacen vinos que han sido fenómenos a estudiar como el caso de Pruno, reconocido como el mejorcalidad precio del mundo por Robert Parker. A los que hay que añadir iconos como Nebro o Specimen.

Entre sus principales convicciones Finca Villacreces busca respetar al máximo todo lo que la naturaleza le proporciona: un viñedo singular, pinos centenarios, el río Duero, flora, fauna autóctona… Este empeño se ha traducido, este año, en el certificado Wineries for Climate Protection, el programa más importante impulsado por la Federación Española del Vino (FEV) y con amplio reconocimiento internacional. WfCP es la única certificación oficial que reconoce a aquellas bodegas comprometidas con la sostenibilidad y la ecología.

OASIS ECOLÓGICO

La bodega propiedad de Artevino Family Wineries, compañía tras la que se sitúa la familia Antón, puede presumir de ser una de las mayores fincas de Valladolid donde todo el viñedo se cultiva de forma ecológica. De hecho, acaba de presentar la nueva añada del vino que lleva el nombre de la bodega: Finca Villacreces, que estrena añada, la 2018, y calificación de ecológico.

The new Finca Villacreces is made from organic Tinta Fina (86%), Cabernet Sauvignon (10%) and Merlot (4%) grapes. The estate's different soils lend complexity to a wine that is also remarkable for its elegance and balance.

According to Lalo Antón, the owner of the Finca Villacreces estate, "the conversion of the entire estate to organic growing is a step further in our commitment to quality, but also to especting our natural environment.

We should take care of it so that future generations will receive a great legacy".

A REFERENCE FOR WINE TOURISM

Such a superb natural environment cannot go unnoticed for long. That is why Villacreces is spearheading one of the most important wine tourism projects in Ribera del Duero, offering visitors different tourism experiences in which they can appreciate the essence of the estate and the surrounding natural environment.

The Valladolid winery was one of the first to offer the electric bike tours of the estate and picnics among the vineyards that have now become so popular elsewhere.

This year, it also made headlines when it received the Verema Award for best wine tourism initiative for its Día Pruno (Pruno Day). This event, combining wine, gastronomy, music and, of course, the natural environment, has become one of the most important wine festivals in Spain.

El nuevo Finca Villacreces está elaborado con uvas orgánicas de Tinta Fina (86%), Cabernet Sauvignon (10%) y Merlot (4%). Los diferentes suelos de los que consta la finca le proporcionan complejidad a un vino que también destaca por su equilibrio y elegancia. Esta añada, la 2018, es la primera vez que aparece con etiquetado ecológico.

Un entorno natural así no puede pasar desapercibido.

Por eso, Villacreces abandera uno de los proyectos enoturísticos más importantes de Ribera del Duero, donde pone a disposición de los visitantes diferentes experiencias para comprender la esencia de la finca y poner en valor el medio natural que le rodea. En ese sentido, la bodega vallisoletana fue pionera en la utilización bicicletas eléctricas para visitar la finca y ofrecer un picnic rodeado de viñedos.

Este año, también ha sido noticia al recibir el Premio Verema a mejor iniciativa enoturística por su Día Pruno.

Esta experiencia se ha convertido en uno de los principales ‘wine festivals’ del país donde vino, gastronomía, música y, cómo no, naturaleza se dan la mano.

SW: This definition is very concise, but also leaves us with some questions... What are the entities that represent the wine sector’s value chain? Are all that participate in the entire value chain involved? And, most importantly... Are they all aligned?

The OIVE (The Spanish Wine Board) is a private association made up of the major organisations that represent the winemaking sector in Spain, from the production of the grapes to their marketing as wine. It is structured into two branches with equal representation, established by regulation: production and transformation/marketing. So, members of the first group include Cooperativas Agro-Alimentarias de España (Food Cooperatives of Spain); ASAJA (the Agricultural Association of Young Farmers); COAG (Coordinator of Farmer and Livestock Farmer Organisations); and the UPA (Union of Small Farmers and Livestock Farmers). Then, on the marketing and distribution side we have: Cooperativas Agro-Alimentarias de España (Food Cooperatives of Spain), the FEV (Spanish Wine Federation) and the AEVE (the Wine Business Association of Spain). We also have a Consulting Committee, which includes the participation of other sector organisations that represent other grapevine products, such as grape must and wine spirits, and we have a long-term collaboration agreement with the wine designations of origin through the CECRV (Spanish Conference of Winemaking Regulatory Councils). The creation of the Spanish Wine Interprofessional Organisation in 2014 was a milestone in the sector: for the first time, we understood that we had to put our differences aside and work together for what unites us. Thus, the members of OIVE view the Interprofessional as a stable framework for collaborative work, and as a place where we can debate and make decisions about the sector and its future.

SW.: Esta definición es muy concisa pero a la vez, nos deja con preguntas en el aire… ¿Cuáles son esas entidades que representan la cadena de valor del sector del vino? ¿Están involucrados todos los que son partícipes de toda esa cadena de valor? Y lo más importante… ¿van todos a una?

La Interprofesional del Vino de España (OIVE) es una asociación privada compuesta por las principales organizaciones representativas del sector vitivinícola de España, desde la producción de uva hasta su comercialización como vino. Está estructurada de forma paritaria, como marca la normativa, en dos ramas: producción y transformación/ comercialización. Así, en la misma mesa contamos, como miembros del primer grupo, con Cooperativas Agro-Alimentarias de España; la Asociación Agraria de Jóvenes Agricultores (Asaja), la Coordinadora de Organizaciones de Agricultores y Ganaderos (COAG) y la Unión de Pequeños Agricultores y Ganaderos (UPA). Por otro lado, en la rama comercialización y distribución se encuentran Cooperativas AgroAlimentarias de España, la Federación Española del Vino (FEV) y la Asociación Empresarial Vino de España (AEVE). Además contamos con un Comité Consultivo en el que participan otras organizaciones del sector que representan a otros productos de la vid, como el mosto de uva o el alcohol vínico, y tenemos un acuerdo de colaboración estable con las denominaciones de origen vitivinícolas a través de la Conferencia Española de Consejos Reguladores Vitivinícolas (CECRV).

La creación de la Interprofesional del Vino de España en 2014 fue ya un hito en el sector ya que por primera vez se comprendió que debíamos dejar a un lado lo que nos diferencia e ir todos a una por lo que nos une. Por ello, las entidades integradas en OIVE entienden que la interprofesional supone un marco estable de trabajo conjunto, constituyendo un lugar de debate y de adopción de decisiones sobre el sector y su futuro.

The organisation was created 7 years ago now... what was its purpose? What did it aim to do, and what were its objectives?

Have those expectations been met so far?

The Spanish Wine Interprofessional Organisation (OIVE) was the first initiative that was able to unite the sector to defend its common interests. We are a very fragmented, complex sector, with many different realities. In 2014, after several attempts, we were able to create an organisation that put together all of those pieces of the puzzle. Over the past 7 years, we have tried to be a place where stakeholders can come together, debate, and share their problems, needs, and – most importantly – find short and long-term solutions. The recovery of wine consumption in our country was and still is one of the most pressing challenges the sector must face and, therefore, that OIVE must face. Over the years, we've worked on different promotional measures to bring wine to the consumers, which had good results.

In 2019 there was a clear recovery of wine consumption in Spain, and that seemed to be the predominant trend, but the sharp drop off in March 2020 due to the closure of bars and restaurants and tourism affected that trend.

Therefore, our promotional campaigns – both in Spain and internationally – have taken on new importance.

How would you describe the activity of the organisation you direct, and what actions are you taking to help the wine sector?

OIVE’s scope of action is defined in its bylaws and OIVE's road map is established by a ministerial order that sets out its lines of activity and term. Today, Order APA/806/2019 is the basis for our activities; generally, they involve promoting and providing information about the wine industry and its products; improving economic intelligence and coordination within the sector; and promoting research, development and technological innovation during the winemaking campaigns from 2019/20 to 2023/24.

These projects are possible thanks to contributions from those involved in the winemaking through the socalled “extension of the rule mechanism”, according to the aforementioned order. At OIVE, we are aware that all of this would not have been possible without the financial contributions from most of those involved in the winemaking sector, who have understood our message that together we are better able to tackle the important challenges we face.

Spain has a huge number of wineries spread throughout the country. How many wineries are involved in OIVE? What do the wineries expect from an organisation like the one you head? Do they have many concerns, issues, questions?

The winegrowers, cooperatives and wineries involved in the winemaking sector are represented within the Spanish Wine Interprofessional Organisation through member organisations. These organisations represent around 85% of the sector and are located throughout Spain. These entities, as you say, are not only geographically diverse, but they also have different challenges and concerns. What they all agree on is the need to address the low consumption of wine in our country, exacerbated by the pandemic, and therefore 80% of our budget goes toward promoting the

moderate consumption of wine in the Spanish market, as well as defending wine's image as a part of the healthy Mediterranean diet. We are also united in wanting to improve the added value of our international sales since we are the number one exporter of wine worldwide in terms of volume, but only third in terms of value.

For the sector, operating under the umbrella of the different designations of origin in Spain provides important added value. What is your relationship with the D.O.s? Do they bring up issues similar to those of the wineries?

Aware of the importance of our designations of origin both quantitatively and qualitatively, in 2017 we signed a collaboration agreement between the CECRV (Spanish Conference of Regulatory Councils) and OIVE to address issues related to Designations of Origin. We work together very closely on issues such as promoting wine both in Spain and abroad, defending the image of wine and its importance to our country, including questions related to promotion and moderate consumption.

¿Cuál es la actividad que realiza la organización que dirige y qué acciones llevan a cabo para ayudar al sector vitivinícola?

Los ámbitos de actuación de OIVE están definidos en sus estatutos y la hoja de ruta de OIVE está establecida a través de una orden ministerial que fija las líneas de actividad y periodo de vigencia. A día de hoy, la Orden APA/806/2019 es la base de nuestras actividades y, a grandes rasgos, se estructuran en promoción e información del sector vitivinícola y sus productos, mejora de la inteligencia económica y la vertebración Sectorial, promover la investigación, desarrollo, innovación tecnológica, durante las campa-ñas vitivinícolas desde 2019/20 hasta 2023/24.

La puesta en marcha de estos proyectos es posible gracias a las aportaciones que los operadores realizan a través del llamado mecanismo de extensión de norma, según la citada orden. Desde OIVE somos conscientes de que todo esto no hubiera sido posible sin el esfuerzo económico de la gran mayoría de los operadores del sector que han entendido el mensaje de que unidos tenemos más posibilidades de afrontar los importantes retos que tiene el sector.

España tiene multitud de bodegas extendidas a lo largo del territorio nacional. ¿Cuántas bodegas están involucradas en OIVE? ¿Qué esperan las bodegas de una organización como la que usted dirige? ¿Les presentan muchas inquietudes, problemas, preguntas?

Esta organización se creó hace ahora 7 años… ¿con qué propósito? ¿Qué se pretendía hacer y con qué objetivos? ¿Se han cumplido hasta ahora las expectativas?

La Organización Interprofesional del Vino de España (OIVE) supuso la primera iniciativa que ha sido capaz de unir al sector con el propósito de defender sus intereses comunes. Somos un sector muy atomizado, muy complejo, con muchas realidades por lo que en 2014 después de varios intentos se consiguió crear una organización que recogiera todas esas piezas del puzle. A lo largo de estos siete años, hemos intentado ser un lugar de encuentro y de debate donde compartir problemas, necesidades y, lo más importante, buscar soluciones a corto y largo plazo. La recuperación del consumo de vino en nuestro país era y sigue siendo uno de los retos más acuciantes a los que debe enfrentarse el sector y, por tanto, también se debe enfrentar OIVE. En estos años, hemos trabajado en diferentes acciones de promoción para acercar el vino al consumidor que estaban teniendo buenos resultados. 2019 fue un año de recuperación clara del consumo de vino en España y esa parecía la tendencia predominante, pero la brusca caída desde marzo de 2020 por el cierre de bares y restaurantes y turismo, cambió el rumbo. Por ello, toma mayor relevancia nuestras campañas de promoción a nivel tanto nacional como internacional.

Los operadores del sector vitivinícola, viticultores, cooperativas y bodegas están representados en la Interprofesional del Vino de España a través de las organizaciones miembro. Éstas vienen a representar alrededor del 85% del sector y están repartidas por toda la geografía nacional. Nuestros operadores, como comentas, no solo están distanciados geográficamente sino también con diferentes retos e inquietudes. En los que todos coinciden es en el bajo consumo de vino en nuestro país, agravado por la pandemia, por lo que más del 80% de nuestro presupuesto va destinado a la promoción del consumo moderado de vino en el mercado nacional, así como la defensa de la imagen del vino como producto de la saludable dieta mediterránea. También nos une el deseo de mejorar el valor añadido de nuestras ventas al exterior ya que somos el primer exportador mundial de vino pero el tercero en valor.

Para el sector, actuar bajo el paraguas de las diferentes denominaciones de origen existentes en España es un importante valor añadido. ¿Cuál es su relación con ellas? ¿Les plantean situaciones similares a las que pueden salir de las bodegas?

Conscientes de la importancia de nuestras denomina-ciones de origen tanto en el plano cuantitativo como cualitativo, en 2017 firmamos un acuerdo de colaboración entre la Conferencia Española de Consejos Reguladores (CECRV) y OIVE para abordar los asuntos relacionados con las Denominaciones de Origen. Colaboramos estrechamente en materias como la promoción del vino tanto en España como en los mercados exteriores, y en la defensa de la imagen del vino y todo lo que representa en nuestro país, incluyendo los aspectos de promoción del consumo moderado, entre otras.

And internationally, do you work closely with any other entity or organisation? And if so, how do you work together?

As I said, promoting our wines on the international market is another one of our areas of work. To that end, this year we signed a framework agreement with the ICEX (Spanish Institute for Foreign Trade), España Exportación e Inversiones (Spain Exports and Investments) to promote awareness of Spanish wines in international markets, helping to improve their image among consumers and wine trade professionals all over the world, and supporting the internationalisation of the Spanish winemaking sector.

The agreement includes a programme to raise awareness and offer training on the excellence and diversity of Spanish wines abroad, developing and participating in international promotional campaigns, organising training sessions for members of the winemaking sector, and specific market research to be carried out by the Economic and Trade Offices of Spain abroad in priority countries.

Additionally, it includes participation in “Foods and Wines From Spain,” the promotional campaign that ICEX is rolling out in international media that focuses on Spanish gastronomy, thereby leveraging the synergies created for our wines.

We think it is important to join forces to place Spanish wine at the forefront of the international scene by making people aware of the excellence and diversity of wines from Spain, and thus building a strong brand image we can use to face future challenges.

Let's talk a little bit about the sector's current situation.

2020 was a very complicated year for most sectors in our society, but the wine sector was particularly affected by COVID, as hotels, restaurants and bars were closed for a long time. How has OIVE experienced this situation?

How have you been able to help the sector? What actions have you taken?

According to figures from the INFOVI winemaking sector markets information system, wine consumption in Spain fell by 18% in 2020 compared to the previous year, mainly due to the sharp decrease in sales in bars and restaurants (the On Trade), which was not offset by the increase in sales in supermarkets and shops (the Off Trade). Thus, OIVE has been working on a strong campaign to support the On Trade – which is so strategic for the wine industry – through advertising, a training programme for hospitality professionals and contests which encouraged consumers to get together to enjoy some wine in our bars and restaurants.

Additionally, the Spanish Wine Interprofessional Organisation joined the “Together with the Hospitality Industry” platform, an initiative to support the On Trade promoted by HOSTELERÍA DE ESPAÑA, FIAB, and AECOC. These actions were complemented by initiatives from the rest of the winemaking sector supporting the healthcare system, hospitality, and those groups most affected by the COVID-19 crisis, demonstrating its commitment to society.

Y a nivel internacional, ¿se relacionan con alguna entidad u organismo? ¿De qué forma colaboran?

Como comentaba, la promoción de nuestros vinos en el mercado internacional es otra de nuestras líneas de actuación. Para ello, firmamos este año un convenio marco con ICEX, España Exportación e Inversiones con el objetivo de fomentar el conocimiento de los vinos de España en los mercados internacionales, contribuyendo a mejorar su imagen entre profesionales y consumidores de todo el mundo, y promover la internacionalización del sector vitivinícola español. El acuerdo contempla impulsar un programa de difusión y formación sobre la excelencia y diversidad de los vinos de España en mercados exteriores, el desarrollo y la participación en campañas de promoción internacional, la organización de sesiones formativas para los propios operadores del sector y la realización, por parte de las Oficinas Económicas y Comerciales de España en el exterior, de estudios específicos en países prioritarios.

Además, se incluye la participación en acciones de “Foods and Wines From Spain”, la campaña de promoción que está desarrollando ICEX en medios internacionales en la que se incorpora la gastronomía española como eje vertebrador, y así aprovechar las sinergias que se generan también para nuestros vinos.

Creemos que es importante de aunar fuerzas para situar al vino español en lo más alto del escenario internacional, dando a conocer la excelencia y diversidad de los vinos de España y así construir una potente imagen de marca con la que hacer frente a los retos de futuro.

Hablemos un poco de la actualidad del sector. El 2020 fue un año muy complicado para la mayoría de los sectores de nuestra sociedad, pero el del vino, se vio especialmente afectado por la COVID al tener durante mucho tiempo cerrados hoteles, restaurantes, bares,… ¿Cómo se ha vivido desde OIVE esta situación? ¿De qué manera han podido ayudar al sector? ¿Qué acciones han impulsado?

Según las cifras del sistema de información de mercados del Sector vitivinícola (INFOVI) el consumo de vino cayó en España un 18% en 2020 comparado con el año anterior, fruto principalmente de la fuerte reducción que se sufrió en el canal de bares y restaurantes (HoReCa) no compensada por el incremento de ventas en el de alimentación. En este sentido, desde OIVE trabajamos en una potente campaña de apoyo a este canal tan estratégico para el vino a través de publicidad, un programa de formación destinado a profesionales de la restauración o la propuesta de concursos en los que animaba a compartir unos vinos en nuestros bares y restaurantes. Además, la Organización Interprofesional del Vino de España se adhirió a la plataforma "Juntos con la Hostelería", una iniciativa de apoyo al canal HoReCa promovido por HOSTELERÍA DE ESPAÑA, FIAB y AECOC. A todo esto, se sumaron las iniciativas del resto del sector vitivinícola, demostrando su compromiso con la sociedad a través de acciones de apoyo al sistema sanitario, a la hostelería y hacia los colectivos más afectados por la crisis del COVID19.

Now that it seems like we're turning this terrible situation around, what prospects do you see in the not-so-distant future? And in the long term?

Right now, the most important thing is for the harvest to go off well, both in terms of the product, with good weather for the last stages of grape development, as well as in terms of Covid-19 management measures so that we don’t have any health incidents. In terms of how we should face this campaign, I think we can and should be optimistic since we are slowly seeing an increase in wine consumption in Spain, tourism is coming back little by little and our exports are recovering and improving every month. We need to return to a balanced market situation after Covid-19; to do so, OIVE is also working on a sector-wide strategy.

In any event, there is a message that OIVE launched amid the pandemic that I think represents the feeling in our sector: despite the difficult times we’ve had, we must identify opportunities in times of adversity and see the wine glass as #alwayshalffull

The harvest is starting throughout Spain; when this article is published, there will be very few areas that have yet to bring in the 2021 harvest. What impressions are you getting from the sector?

It looks like there will be a decrease in volume this year, not only in Spain, but also among our competitors, but it will still be a while before we have an exact figure.

We're looking at a range of 39 to 40 million hL. Drought, heatwave, fires, and now a weather pattern that has brought heavy storms are having a strong impact on this campaign.

Based on some of the campaigns your organisation has carried out, we've noticed that you are concerned about wine consumption in the future. Young generations perhaps do not have a culture of drinking wine and opt for other alcoholic beverages (beer, gin and tonics, etc.). What must be done to ensure that they choose a glass of wine over these alternatives? Is it purely a financial issue, or does it also have to do with culture?

Increasing wine consumption in our country is one of the challenges of the Spanish winemaking sector and, therefore, OIVE has been implementing measures since 2017 to make wine more approachable and an everyday choice for society, especially for young consumers. Before the pandemic, the trend was clearly on the rise, which supported our strategy. Therefore, the Spanish Wine Interprofessional Organisation's campaign is coming at a decisive moment for the sector, when it looks like restrictions are relaxing, vaccination is slowly becoming more widespread, and people, now more than ever, are looking to celebrate those small, happy occasions, preferably with wine.

We are known for producing good wines, but the average price of the wines we export is actually lower than that of other exporting countries. Why is that? Do we not value our wines? How can we change this situation?

Almost half of Spanish wine production is exported, and more than double the wine that is consumed in Spain is exported.

We are world leaders in terms of vineyard surface area, the third-biggest producer, and the first exporter by volume.

On the flip side, we are aware that our challenge today is to obtain an even better price for our wines and move them up to the position they deserve in terms of their tradition and excellence. For that reason, OIVE is working on a sectorwide strategy that considers the current situation and the styles of wine we produce and which will, on the one hand, improve the image and prestige of our highest-quality wines abroad, growing awareness levels in the markets, and, on the other, increase the price of Spanish wine sold in bulk, which is a very high percentage of our exports and which, in general, is of a high quality that is not reflected by the low prices at which it is sold.

Ahora que parece que vamos revirtiendo esta pésima situación, ¿qué perspectivas ven de cara a un futuro no muy lejano? ¿Y a largo plazo?

En estos momentos de vendimia, lo principal es que desarrolle de forma tranquila tanto en el plano del producto con una climatología que acompañe en esta última etapa del desarrollo del fruto, como de control de la pandemia y que no se produzcan incidencias sanitarias. En cuanto a cómo encaramos esta campaña podemos y debemos ser optimistas ya que lentamente estamos viendo como aumenta el consumo nacional, el turismo poco a poco despierta y nuestras exportaciones están recuperándose y mejorando mes a mes. Necesitamos volver al equilibrio de los mercados tras la Covid-19 y para ello, también estamos trabajando desde OIVE en una estrategia sectorial.

De cualquier forma, hay un mensaje que desde OIVE lanzamos en plena pandemia que creo representa el sentir de nuestro sector ya que a pesar de los duros momentos que hemos vivido debemos identificar las oportunidades en momentos adversos y ver la copa de vino #siempremediollena.

Desde su organización, hemos detectado, por alguna de las campañas que han realizado, que les preocupa el consumo de vino en el futuro. Las jóvenes generaciones quizás no tienen una cultura de beber vino y se decantan por otro tipo de bebidas alcohólicas (cervezas, gintonics,…). ¿Qué hay que hacer para que en lugar de consumir esas bebidas alternativas se decanten por una copa de vino? ¿Es una cuestión solamente económica o también de cultura?

El incremento del consumo de vino en nuestro país es uno de los retos del sector vitivinícola español y, por tanto, de OIVE que lleva desde 2017 desarrollando actuaciones para hacer más cercano y cotidiano el vino a la sociedad, sobre todo al consumidor joven. Antes de la pandemia, la tendencia era claramente alcista lo que reafirmaba la estrategia marcada. Por ello, la campaña de la Interprofesional del Vino de España llega en un momento decisivo para el sector, cuando las medidas parece que se están flexibilizando, la vacunación poco a poco se va generalizando y la población, más que nunca, busca celebrar estos pequeños momentos de felicidad, a ser posible, con vino.

Tenemos la fama de tener buenos vinos, pero, realmente el precio medio de los vinos de exportación es bastante más bajo que el de otros países exportadores. ¿Por qué sucede esto? ¿No ponemos en valor nuestros vinos? ¿Cómo se puede revertir esa situación?

Casi la mitad de la producción de vino en España tiene como destino la exportación, a la que se dirige más del doble de lo que se consume en España. Somos líderes en superficie mundial de viñedo, tercer productor y primer exportador en volumen. En el lado contrario somos conscientes de que nuestra asignatura pendiente es valorizar aún más nuestros vinos y llevarlos al lugar que por tradición y excelencia les corresponde. Para ello, desde OIVE estamos trabajando en una estrategia sectorial que tenga en cuenta todas las realidades y estilos de vino que busca, por un lado, mejorar la imagen y aumentar el prestigio en el exterior de los vinos de mayor calidad, incrementando el nivel de conocimiento en los mercados y, por otro, poner en valor el vino español vendido a granel, que supone un elevadísimo porcentaje de nuestras exportaciones y que, en general, ofrece una alta calidad que no se ve reflejada en los bajos precios a los que se vende.

Estamos empezando vendimias en diferentes partes del territorio y cuando estas líneas salgan a la luz, quedarán pocas zonas pendientes de realizar la vendimia 2021. ¿Qué impresiones les están llegando por parte del sector?

Todo apunta a que la campaña será a la baja no solo en España sino entre nuestros competidores, pero aún queda mucho para dar una cifra clara. Barajamos una horquilla de entre 39 y 40 millones de Hl. Sequía, ola de calor, incendios y ahora una DANA que nos ha traído fuertes tormentas son acontecimientos que están marcando esta campaña.

¿Cuáles son los próximos objetivos de OIVE para mejorar el sector vitivinícola?

Debemos conseguir que nuestro sector sea sostenible, tanto desde el punto de vista medioambiental, como económico y social. La actividad vitivinícola en nuestro país contribuye a la fijación de población al territorio, en la que el viñedo es fuente de actividad e ingresos representa un 2,2% del PIB nacional y crea más de 427.700 empleos de forma directa e indirecta, según un estudio desarrollado por OIVE. Por este motivo, es importante que traslademos a sociedad e instituciones esta relevancia y la necesidad de que sin prosperidad no hay futuro. Una viña abandonada o una bodega que debe cerrar es una pérdida de patrimonio para nuestro país.

What are OIVE’s next objectives for developing the winemaking sector?

We must ensure that our sector is sustainable, from the environmental and economic as well as social standpoints. Winemaking in our country helps keep people attached to the land, where winemaking is a source of economic activity and income that represents 2.2% of GDP and creates more than 427,700 jobs directly and indirectly, according to a study by OIVE. For that reason, we must convey this relevance to society and institutions along with the idea that without prosperity there is no future. An abandoned vineyard or a winery that must close is a loss of heritage for our country.

At OIVE we will continue to push for improved information on the sector, which is essential for decision-making by all those involved in the sector, both in production and marketing. In this regard, OIVE, through a collaboration agreement with the Observatorio Español del Mercado del Vino (Spanish Wine Market Observatory), is making a number of market reports, many of which focused on the export market, available to members of the winemaking sector. Of course, we will continue to drive R&D within the wine sector, especially on topics related to the revitalisation of the sector, climate change and the relationship between wine and health. To that end, we have renewed our agreement with the Plataforma Tecnológica del Vino (Wine Technological Platform), a leading institution in innovation within the winemaking sector.

Lastly, at OIVE we are aware of the need to achieve greater balance in our production to prevent market fluctuations and tensions. In this regard, in addition to incentivising demand with actions in Spain and abroad, OIVE is working on measures that will stabilize the supply. Here, our work includes creating official standardised contracts for long-term grape and wine purchases, working to launch wine marketing regulations, and promoting quality and traceability.

Therefore, thanks to the contributions it receives from members of the winemaking sectors, OIVE will continue to work alongside all the interested parties, because only with a united winemaking sector can we overcome this situation.

Desde OIVE se seguirá apostando por una mejora de la información sectorial, imprescindible para la toma de decisiones de nuestros operadores y organismos, tanto en el lado de la producción como en el de la comercialización. En este aspecto OIVE, entre otras actuaciones, a través del acuerdo de colaboración con el Observatorio Español del Mercado del Vino, está poniendo puntualmente a disposición de los operadores interesantes informes de mercado, muchos orientados a la exportación. Por supuesto, seguiremos impulsando la I+D+i en el sector del vino; especialmente en aquellos temas relacionados con la dinamización del sector, el cambio climático y la relación entre vino y salud. Para ello, se ha renovado el acuerdo con la Plataforma Tecnológica del Vino, institución referencia en la innovación del sector vitivinícola.

Por último, desde OIVE somos conscientes de la necesidad de buscar un mayor equilibrio en nuestras producciones para evitar fluctuaciones y tensiones de mercado. En este sentido, además de incentivar la demanda con acciones en España y en el exterior, desde OIVE estamos trabajando en medidas que contribuyan a la estabilidad en la oferta. Así, destaca la puesta en marcha de contratos tipo homologados para la compraventa de uva y vino plurianuales, los trabajos para la puesta en marcha de una norma de comercialización en el vino, y la defensa de la calidad y la trazabilidad. In this wine, we have a surprisingly pleasant sensation of intense freshness for a white wine from 4 vintages ago. Surprising too because this freshness and plenitude come from one of the earliest and warmest harvests in history. We are also surprised by the two unusual varieties in its blend, Tempranillo Blanco and Maturana Blanca. Surprising too is the intensity of its white flower and fruit primary aromas, after fermenting and ageing in concrete, in amphorae, and 6 months in large barrels. Its soft, elegant tannins with a smooth, luscious texture, are equally surprising. Oh Yes, we do love a wine that can surprise us!

This excellent wine, now at its drinking best, comes from Galicia's oldest D.O. It is named after its progenitor, Emilio Rojo an aeronautical engineer who swapped his career for a life in the country, where he became one of the most interesting winemakers in Spain and the maestro of oak-aged Ribeiro wines. This wine was born in a small, 1.5-hectare ancestral vineyard growing in granite soil in the Avellada Valley. It is a unique wine, from a visionary producer and an exceptional part of the world.

This is a white wine for day and for night, for winter and for summer, crafted from the queen of white varietals, the Chardonnay, which is well known and planted both within and beyond our borders. In the vineyards of Don Miguel de Marimar, this well-loved varietal is explosive and majestic. It shows great aromatic intensity with tropical aromas, citrus peel, a smooth acidity, a fresh luscious character and a silky texture. This is a long, expressive and well-balanced wine that pairs well with many dishes and is ideal for relaxed drinking occasions.

Sorprende la agradable sensación de frescor intensa por ser un vino blanco de cuatro cosechas atrás. We could not write this review without mentioning our respect and great admiration for these pre-phylloxera Verdejo vineyards that are almost 200 years old and which, year after year, bring us unique white wines of great depth. Ossian is not just a wine, it is a legacy, a heritage and a living history rooted in the land. Its raw material comes through in the form of white stone fruit aromas, its toasted notes show its 9 months of oak ageing, its texture and weight come from the lees and its varietal purity is the result of a courageous and hazardous journey that begins in the vineyard.

"Wild white". This is what “Sauvignon Blanc”, the name of the dominant grape variety in the West of France, means. This varietal is very popular with consumers who love its typical aromas of passion fruit and grapefruit, broom and orange blossom, grass and green pepper, all infused with a fresh Atlantic character. The varietal arrived in Rueda in the 70s and has acclimatised very well. This particular Sauvignon Blanc comes from vineyards sitting at an altitude of 770 metres. It is vinified in receptacles made from three different materials - wood, concrete and stainless steel - in order to achieve a perfect balance.

Part of the wealth of Ribeiro's heritage is the large number of traditional varieties preserved there over the years. Both O Gran Viña Mein white and this red wine are the reincarnation of this varietal richness: Caíño Longo, Brancellao and Garnacha Tintorera.

This wine’s aromatic intensity and rustic character contrast with its delicate and subtle entry on the palate. It gradually gains energy in the glass until it fully expresses the great purity, freshness and vegetal notes typical of the Avia Valley.

No podemos escribir este post sin mostrar respeto y devoción por unos viñedos prefiloxéricos de verdejo de casi dos cientos años que, año tras año, nos regalan unos vinos blancos únicos y profundos. Ossian no es solo un vino, es un legado, es un patrimonio, es historia viva arraigada a la tierra.

Su materia prima se encarna en fruta blanca de hueso, sus notas tostadas delatan los nueve meses de crianza en madera, su textura y peso se desprenden de las propias lías y su pureza varietal es un viaje arriesgado y valiente que empieza en el viñedo.

Un “blanco salvaje”, esto es lo que significa Sauvignon Blanc, la variedad reina en el Oeste de Francia, y una variedad muy demandada entre los consumidores por sus propiedades afrutadas. Fruta de la pasión y pomelo, retama y azahar, hierba y pimiento verde, y un fresco carácter atlántico son los aromas que identifican este vino, gracias a una variedad que llegó a Rueda en los años 70 y donde se ha aclimatado perfectamente bien.

De unos viñedos a 770 metros de altitud, nos llega este Sauvignon blanc vinificado con tres materiales para encontrar el equilibrio entre el fudre, el hormigón y el inox.

Una de las riquezas patrimoniales de Ribeiro es la gran cantidad de variedades tradicionales conservadas a lo largo del tiempo y, tanto O Gran Viña Mein blanco como este tinto, son la pura reencarnación de una riqueza varietal: Caíño Longo, Brancellao y Garnacha Tintorera. Su intensidad aromática y su estilo rústico contrasta con la delicada y sutil entrada en boca, que poco a poco va ganando energía en copa hasta expresar toda la pureza, el frescor, las notas de vegetación y la energía que se traspira en el Valle del Avia.

The Philipponnat family moved to Ay, the beating heart of the Champagne region, in 1522, and since that time they have been working the vineyards in Le León. This Grand Cru wine has therefore been named after a year that is very symbolic for the Champagne House.

The 2014 vintage was not easy. It was a year full of surprises and challenges. The mild, rainy autumn and winter were followed by a very good spring for the vineyards with warm, sunny weather conducive to bud break. However, the rain and low temperatures over the summer required close monitoring of the weather forecast and the vineyards to prevent an invasion of pests and fungus. Thanks to these constant checks, the grapes were harvested in mid-September and the result was more than satisfactory...

La cosecha 2014 no fue nada fácil, un año lleno de sorpresas y desafíos. Después de un otoño y un invierno suaves y lluviosos, les siguió una primavera muy buena para el viñedo, cálida y soleada, lo que propició la brotación en la planta. Sin embargo, las lluvias y las bajas temperaturas del verano obligaron a estar muy pendientes del tiempo y del viñedo a diario para evitar plagas y hongos. Gracias a controles constantes, la uva se recogió a mediados de septiembre con un resultado más que satisfactorio.

This champagne was fermented in wooden barrels but did not undergo malolactic fermentation in order to retain purity and freshness. With a majority of Pinot Noir (81%) from the historic Le León vineyard and some Chardonnay (19%) from the Verzy vineyard, the result is a blended champagne of great finesse and elegance.

Elaborado en barrica de madera sin fermentación maloláctica, para no perder pureza ni frescor. Con una mayoría de Pinot Noir (81%) procedente del histórico viñedo del León, y algo de Chardonnay (19%) que nace en la viña de Verzy, el resultado es un blended de gran finura y elegancia.

The nose shows a nice aromatic intensity with fruity notes of apples and pears, candied citrus and blackcurrant against a backdrop of marzipan and dried fruit. The palate is full-bodied, expressive and generous, with innate mineral notes and a firm structure and acidity that augurs a long life. The aromatic notes over its long finish are reminiscent of pastries, sourdough yeast and freshly-baked bread.

En la nariz, se aprecia una buena intensidad aromática, notas afrutadas de manzana y pera, cítricos confitados, grosellas negras sobre un fondo a mazapán y de frutos secos. En boca se muestra pletórico, expresivo, generoso en cuerpo, de estructura firme, acidez que le pronostica larga vida y notas de mineralidad innatas.

Su largo recuerdo nos lleva a las notas de panadería, a las levaduras de masa madre, y al pan recién horneado.

Widely recognised as being one of the best producers in the world, Penfolds often blends different grapes from different areas to offer us the Australian landscape and terroir in the bottle. The Koonunga Hill 76 is a blend of Shiraz, arguably Australia's most popular grape variety, offering lush black fruit and spicy flavours, with Cabernet Sauvignon, which lends the wine power and meatiness. 12 months in new and semi-new French and American oak barrels lend structure and complexity to this South Australian wine that pays tribute to the winery's former technical director, the greatly admired Max Schubert, who devoted his entire life to Penfolds. With fruity, spicy and mineral notes, a pleasant and seductive palate, a long and well-balanced finish and excellent acidity, this wine is a real treat. This red wine is elegance through and through.

Since the winery’s foundation by Christofer Rawson Penfolds and his wife Mary in 1844, it has set an example to other producers and wines around the world. Peter Gago has been at the head of the winemaking team since 2002. As well as being the person responsible for preserving Max's legacy and Penfolds' reputation, he must continue to experiment and move forward to ensure that its wines remain a benchmark for excellence, quality, concentration, balance and longevity.

Reconocida por muchos como una de las mejores bodegas del mundo, Penfolds suele mezclar diferentes uvas de diferentes zonas para poder ofrecer en la botella el paisaje y el territorio australianos. En Koonunga Hill Seventy Six mezcla Shiraz, la uva más popular en Australia, sin duda, con sus exuberantes sabores de fruta negra y especias, junto con la Cabernet Sauvignon, que le aporta fuerza y carnosidad. Doce meses en barricas nuevas y seminuevas de roble francés y americano, aportan estructura y complejidad a este vino del sud de Australia que homenajea al ex responsable técnico de la bodega, que dedicó toda su vida a Penfolds, el admirado Max Schubert. De notas afrutadas, especiadas y minerales, de trago amable y seductor, con un final largo y equilibrado, y muy buena acidez, este vino hace las delicias de quien se lo bebe, un tinto más que elegante por fuera y por dentro.

Desde que en 1844 la bodega empezara su actividad de la mano de Christofer Rawson Penfolds y su esposa Mary, su trayectoria es un ejemplo para los vinos y las bodegas del mundo entero.

Toro, a winegrowing region in the Spanish province of Zamora, is full of surprising wines worth seeking out. These elegant and expressive wines boast a fascinating history. Not only the history of its vineyards that were spared from the phylloxera plague in the 19th century but also that of its wine that accompanied Christopher Columbus on his voyage of discovery to America. Yes, the wines from Toro were chosen for the most momentous voyage in history and were the first wines to reach the New World and be granted royal honours.

Over the course of the 20th century, numerous steps were taken towards the creation of the Toro D.O. which was finally made official in 1987. Today its wines are a benchmark of quality both within and beyond the borders of Spain. Toro probably has the largest expanse of hundred-year-old vineyards in Spain and planted with its native grape variety, the Tinta de Toro.

The Duero River flows through its production area from one end to the other, watering and shaping its land.

Toro, zona vitícola en la provincia de Zamora es una caja de sorpresas que descubrir. Sus vinos, elegantes y expresivos, poseen una historia fascinante.

No solo la de aquellos viñedos que quedaron exentos de la plaga de la filoxera en el siglo XIX sino también la de ser los vinos que acompañaron a Cristóbal Colón en su viaje del descubrimiento de América. Estos vinos fueron los elegidos para la travesía más memorable de toda la historia, siendo el vino de Toro, el primer vino que llegó al Nuevo Mundo y en contar con privilegios reales.

A lo largo del siglo XX se fueron dando los primeros pasos para la creación de la D.O. Toro en 1987 y hoy en día, sus vinos, son todo un referente de calidad tanto dentro como fuera de nuestras fronteras. Toro posee, seguramente, la mayor extensión de viñedos centenarios de España de su variedad autóctona, la Tinta de Toro, y el río Duero atraviesa la zona de producción de un extremo a otro bañando y moldeando sus suelos.

METEORIC RISE Today, the Toro D.O. is made up of 65 wineries and 981 winegrowers. The total surface area officially under vine has increased each year to reach 5,851 hectares.

This constant evolution is also a reflection of Toro’s excellent performance on international markets, with exports representing around 40% of its sales. This makes Toro the Castilla y León D.O. with the highest percentage of its sales in international markets. Toro is considered to be one of the most interesting wine

regions in the world, with huge potential for further growth, as the countless prizes and awards which its wines have picked up around the globe go to prove.

These awards reflect the excellent work carried out by the winegrowers and wineries in the Toro D.O. They recognise the exceptional quality of its wines, produced mainly from its native Tinta de Toro, the main varietal planted on the various types of soils that make up the landscape and morphology of this winegrowing region.

CONSTANT EVOLUTION With the Covid 19 pandemic, 2020 was a tough year in many respects, but the Toro D.O. was unstoppable!

The D.O. set a new sales record with 14.5 million bottles sold, +2% up over the previous year. Year after year, Toro is gaining more and more fans who appreciate the wines’ high quality, elegant character and reliability. Its success is due to several factors.

EVOLUCIÓN METEÓRICA Actualmente, la D.O. Toro está conformada por 65 bodegas y 981 viticultores, incrementando su superficie año a año hasta llegar a las 5851 hectáreas de viñedo inscrito actualmente. Esta evolución constante también es un reflejo del buen comportamiento internacional, representando la exportación alrededor del 40% de sus ventas, lo que la convierte en la Denominación de Origen de Castilla y León con mayor porcentaje de exportación con respecto a las demás figuras de calidad. Toro, está considerada como una de las regiones vínicas más interesantes del mundo que cuenta además, con

un gran potencial de seguir creciendo como ponen de manifiesto los innumerables premios y galardones que reciben los vinos de Toro alrededor del mundo.

Esta D.O. ha marcado un nuevo record de ventas, logrando alcanzar la cifra de 14,5 millones de botellas comercializadas, un 2% más que el ejercicio anterior, poniendo de manifiesto de esta manera que el crecimiento de esta Denominación de Origen es imparable. Año tras año, el vino de Toro consigue más adeptos que disfrutan de su grandísima calidad y sus vinos tan elegantes y competitivos, que son sin duda un acierto seguro. Esto ha sido posible gracias a varios factores; por un lado es clave el

buen comportamiento que los vinos de Toro tienen en exportación, y por su magnífica relación calidadprecio siendo la elección de muchos consumidores para su disfrute en el hogar.

When we talk about unique experiences, we mean extraordinary happenings, things that occur once in a lifetime, never to be repeated. You may find yourself in a similar situation in the future... but it’s never quite as good.

And we can vouch for the fact that the two days we spent at Numanthia, with the entire winery team, headed by its director, Lucas Löwi and its oenologist, Jesús Jiménez, were simply extraordinary.

Cuando hablamos de experiencias únicas, nos referimos a cosas extraordinarias, a cosas que pasan una vez y que no volverán a pasar nunca más. Podrán haber situaciones similares… pero no iguales.

Y damos fe de que los dos días que pasamos en Numanthia, con todo el equipo de bodega, encabezado por su Director, Lucas Löwi y su enólogo, Jesús Jiménez, fueron extraordinarios.

NUMANTHIA, A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE

After a long trip to get there (Barcelona - Madrid - Toro) and without stopping off at the hotel first, we headed straight to one of the winery's vineyards, the terroir of La Jara, where we were warmly greeted.

The uniqueness of their terroir sets these vineyards apart, lending them their own personality and character.

It is made up of ancient, humble, stony soils, that have to contend with extreme weather conditions. Despite this, the team at Numanthia manages to produce smooth, elegant wines with a great capacity for cellar ageing.

Many of this winery's vines are among the oldest in the world, some more than 200 years old. Here, the vineyards resisted phylloxera back in 1860, and as they say in some parts, this “Numantine” resistance gives them the distinction of being some of the oldest vineyards in the world.

After the vineyard visit, we headed to the Abadía de San Zoilo (the church in Toro), where the Numantine chefs treated us to some tripe prepared in three different fashions. The chefs were Javier Estévez (La Tasquería, 1 Michelin star); Marc Gascons (Informal/Els Tinars, 1 Michelin star) and Sergio Humada (Txitxardin). This typical Spanish dish was paired with a Numanthia 2015 Magnum to the delight of all those present. And of course, we had to try a typical local dish... some (boneless) suckling lamb... served with... a Numanthia 2007 Magnum... The lunch was brought to a sweet close with some “Cañitas Zamoranas”.

After this fabulous meal, we were allowed a short break and, after we had settled into our hotel rooms, we were treated to a "Terroir Tasting" in which we were able to try the different base wines that subsequently go into the blend of the Numanthia wine. La Jara (fruit), La Manga (structure) and Argujillo (freshness), separately, each shows a different personality, but blended together they offer us tasting sensations that only Numanthia can deliver.

In the evening, the new Numanthia chef, Marcos Morán (Casa Gerardo, 1 Michelin star) was introduced and treated us to an excellent dinner again accompanied by a selection of the winery's wines. The star dish, honouring its homeland, was the Fabada, Fabada de Prendes.

A Fabada served in the evening? Yep, and some of us even had second helpings! The Fabada was infused with subtle flavours, just like Numanthia wines, silky, soft, smooth... Termes Blanco 2019 for the first two courses (crunchy cheese bocadillo and croqueta de Compango), Numanthia 2012 Magnum for some frijoles en jugo ibérico, Numanthia 2003 Magnum for some sea bass and Numanthia 2016 Magnum for the famous Fabada... What more could you ask for? Well, champagne, apparently as someone whipped a few bottles of Krug out of their sleeve just to "top it off"...

The following day they then made us "earn our keep".

We headed for the Argujillo terroir, where some of Numanthia's oldest vines grow. Had they really thought this through? They wanted us to pick these delicate grapes... but we went along with it... we donned our harvesting gear and got down to work. The picking lasted barely an hour but it gave me enough time to find out just how hard it is to pick grapes by hand. Bent over all day long, hoping not to break your back, striving to ensure that the grapes arrive at the winery in the best possible condition, and repeating this over several days... you really have to experience it to understand the hard toil that goes into producing the wines we drink, those of Numanthia particularly, but all wines in general.

Afterwards, we visited the winery where they showed us their facilities and explained the winemaking process. We were introduced to a novelty object... a wooden egg... We were used to seeing concrete eggs, but this is the first wooden one in Spain and, if we understood it correctly, only the third one of its kind in the world.

NUMANTHIA, UNA EXPERIENCIA ÚNICA

Después de un largo viaje (Barcelona – Madrid – Toro) y sin pasar por el hotel, nos dirigimos a uno de los parajes de la bodega, el terruño de la Jara, donde nos dieron la bienvenida.

La singularidad del terruño es lo que hace diferente estos viñedos y lo que les da personalidad y carácter propio. Suelos rocosos, añejos, humildes y enfrentados a cambios climatológicos extremos. A pesar de dichas circunstancias, en Numanthia consiguen elaborar vinos elegantes, redondos, y con gran capacidad de guarda.

Muchos de los viñedos que tiene esta bodega son de los más antiguos del mundo, algunos de ellos con más de 200 años de antigüedad. Aquí, los viñedos resistieron a la filoxera allá por el 1860, y como se dice por algunos lares, esa resistencia numantina, les da a día de hoy ese galardón de ser de los más viejos viñedos existentes en el globo.

Posteriormente nos dirigimos a la Abadía de San Zoilo (Iglesia de Toro), donde los chefs Numantinos nos deleitaron con unos callos realizados de tres formas distintas. Allí estaban Javier Estévez (La Tasquería, 1* Michelín; Marc Gascons (Informal/Els Tinars, 1* Michelín) y Sergio Humada (Txitxardin). Para armonizar este típico plato español, lo acompañaron con un Numanthia 2015 Magnum que hizo las delicias de los presentes. Y cómo no, no podía faltar un plato típico de la zona… un lechazo, en esta ocasión deshuesado… acompañado de… Numanthia 2007 Magnum… y acabamos de forma muy dulce con unas “Cañitas Zamoranas”.

Después del ágape nos dieron un pequeño respiro, una vez instalados en nuestras respectivas habitaciones, para posteriormente realizar un “Terroir Tasting” en el que pudimos catar los diferentes vinos base que, posteriormente, son el blending del vino Numanthia. La Jara (fruta), La Manga (estructura) y Argujillo (frescor), por separado, cada uno demuestra una personalidad diferente, pero juntos nos elevan a sensaciones que nos da únicamente Numanthia.

Ya de noche, se presentó el nuevo chef Numanthino, Marcos Morán (Casa Gerardo, 1* MIchelín) que nos deleitó con una excelente cena acompañada de diferentes vinos de la casa. El plato estrella, haciendo honor a su tierra, fue la fabada, Fabada de Prendes… ¿una fabada de noche?

Pues sí, y hubo quien se atrevió a repetir… hecha con gran sutileza, como se hacen los vinos de Numanthia: sedosos, suaves, redondos,… Termes Blanco 2019 para los dos primeros platos (Bocadillo crujiente de queso y Croqueta de Compango), Numanthia 2012 Magnum para unos Frijoles en jugo ibérico, Numanthia 2003 Magnum para una Lubina en su punto y Numanthia 2016 Magnum para la famosa fabada… ¿Quién da más? Pues alguien se sacó de la manga unas botellas de Krug para “rematar la faena”…

En la siguiente jornada, nos hicieron “ganarnos el sueldo”. Visitamos el terruño de Argujillo, donde se encuentran plantadas algunas de las cepas más antiguas que tiene Numanthia. ¿Ya se lo habían pensado bien?

Querían que nos pusiésemos a vendimiar unas uvas tan delicadas… pues allí que nos metimos… nos enfundamos el equipo de vendimia y… a trabajar. Apenas una hora que, particularmente, me dio para pensar en lo duro que es la vendimia manual. Todo el día agachándose, tratando de no “romper nada” y que la uva llegue en el mejor estado posible a la bodega, y esto repitiéndolo durante días… hay que vivirlo para poder explicarlo y entender el valor de los vinos, los de Numanthia y todos en general.

A continuación, nos fuimos a la bodega donde nos explicaron el proceso de vinificación y nos enseñaron las infraestructuras que allí tienen montadas. Nos presentaron una pieza novedosa… un huevo de madera…

Estamos acostumbrados a ver huevos de cemento, pero éste es el primero que llega a España y, si no lo entendimos mal, el tercero que existe en el mundo.

After the extensive winery tour... it was time for the highlight of the trip: a vertical tasting of the winery's top wine... Termanthia. 2006, 2010, 2012 and 2014. Except for the first vintage, all the others were in magnum format... All of them outstanding, some more evolved than others (obviously), but all of them with their own distinctive character... Personally, I preferred the 2010... which was the one I found to be drinking best right now.

Una vez visitados los entresijos de la bodega… la guinda del pastel de este viaje… Una vertical del vino Top de la bodega… Termanthia. 2006, 2010, 2012 y 2014.

Excepto la primera añada, todas las demás en formato Magnum… Todas excepcionales, unas más evolucionadas que otras (obviamente), pero todas con su propio carácter… Personalmente, me quedo con la 2010… es la que encontré más óptima para tomar en estos momentos.

Once again (this is my second visit to this winery) the kindness of the entire Numanthia team made this visit an unforgettable and unique experience. There will be other visits in future no doubt, but this one was UNIQUE.

Una vez más (es la segunda vez que piso esta bodega) la amabilidad de todo el equipo de Numanthia hizo de esta visita una experiencia inolvidable y única. Existirán otras posteriores, pero ésta ha sido UNICA.

A few days later, Jesús Jiménez, Numanthia's oenologist, sent us a photo showing us that the grapes we had harvested with the other pickers, had gone into the wooden egg... we can't wait to see the outcome... could it be an excuse to return to Numanthia? I don't know, but I'm sure we will find a good reason to visit this wonderful winery in the Toro D.O. again and again.

Por cierto, días más tarde, Jesús Jiménez, el enólogo de Numanthia, nos envió una foto que daba fe de que lo que habíamos vendimiado entre todos los participantes, se había introducido en el huevo de madera… queremos saber el resultado final… ¿sirve como excusa para volver a Numanthia? No lo sé, pero seguro que encontramos alguna para vernos de nuevo en esta maravillosa bodega de la D.O. Toro.
