We can certainly all agree that when something is over a hundred years old, it can safely be described as “centennial”, or that an action repeated every 3031 days can be referred to as a “monthly” occurrence.

When we have something that is quantified and delimited, there should be no issue stating it on wine labels (unless someone tells me differently!).

Seguramente todos estaremos de acuerdo a la hora de decir que todo aquello que tiene más de cien años es algo “centenario”, o que una acción que se repite cada 30/31 días es una situación “mensual”. Poner etiquetas de este estilo, cuando de lo que hablamos es algo cuantificado y acotado, es, salvo que alguien me diga lo contrario, un tema no demasiado discutible.

But when we enter into the realm of the unquantified, the criteria become very subjective. And, with our comment below, we are not seeking to enter into conflict with anyone, but simply to invite a debate on the subject…

Pero cuando entramos en el terreno de lo no cuantificado, los criterios son muy subjetivos. Y con lo que explicaremos a continuación, no queremos entrar en conflicto con nadie, sino simplemente poner encima de la mesa un debate.

In May, the Priorat D.O.Q. presented us with a new classification for its wines, with a series of specifications that will be reflected on the Priorat wine labels. Then in June, we received a communiqué from the Rioja D.O.Ca. in which it also set out its requirements for the classification and description of its wines. The problem arises when, in different areas, the classifications, although similar, are not quite the same, and the criteria used to determine how each wine is classified also differ in some cases.

En el mes de Mayo, la D.O.Q.Priorat, presentaba una nueva clasificación de los vinos de su área, con una serie de especificaciones que vendrán reflejadas en las etiquetas de las botellas. En el mes de Junio, recibíamos en la redacción un comunicado de la D.O.Ca. Rioja en la que también enviaban sus requisitos para la clasificación y descripción de sus vinos.

El debate surge cuando en diferentes áreas, las clasificaciones no son iguales (si parecidas) y los criterios para definir dónde se encasilla cada vino son, en algunos SANTI JIMÉNEZ Director casos, diferentes.

We do, of course, understand that the uniqueness of each region must be reflected in some way or another, but shouldn’t there be a body which sets out the bases for these classifications allowing the “differentiating details” of each region to emerge from there? Sometimes it seems to us that everyone is living in their own little world!

We at Selectus wines are inviting debate on this subject and would be happy to hear from those who want and believe that these criteria should be standardised to give the consumer or trade customer a solid foundation on which to build their wine knowledge.

In addition to debating this question, important to us and to many of the professionals with whom we have spoken, we are delighted to welcome back a former contributor, Xavi Ayala.

Xavi will be presenting a different grape variety and the wines made from it, in each issue. We also have a fascinating piece on Osborne sherries by Federico Oldenburg and other articles that we hope you will find of great interest.

Entendemos que la singularidad de cada zona tiene que quedar reflejada de una u otra forma, pero ¿no debería existir un ente que pusiera las bases de estas clasificaciones y que de ahí surgiesen los “detalles diferenciales” de cada zona? A veces da la sensación de que cada uno hace un poco “la guerra por su cuenta”…

Desde Selectus Wines ponemos este debate encima de la mesa y nos ponemos a disposición de aquellos que quieran y crean que se pueden aunar criterios para que el consumidor (profesional o no) tenga unas bases sobre las que poder asentar sus conocimientos sobre el mundo del vino.

Además de ésta, para nosotros y algunos profesionales con los que hemos hablado, importante cuestión, incorporamos un antiguo colaborador, Xavi Ayala, que nos irá presentando las diferentes uvas existentes, con propuestas de vinos elaborados con la variedad que toque en cada edición.

The Galician wine industry is particularly vibrant

right now. The diversity of the native grape varieties and countryside make the land of Galicia a living ecosystem in constant movement. And this movement is currently being driven by a new generation of winemakers who are bringing a fresh vision and a determination to revive lost varieties in wines of modern and highly-polished styles. A love of winemaking has been transmitted from generation to generation and this has prompted many young people to return to the vineyards, out of conviction, seeking knowledge, and full of entrepreneurial verve. The world of Galician wine is undergoing a transformation, with the knowledge and experience of the past seeking to reinvent their place today and pave the way to a new future.

This type of movement can only occur in ecosystems with solid foundations which preserve the identity of a region.

And these foundations include little marvels such as the Tostados (sweet wines) of Ribeiro, a small D.O. with a patchwork of micro-plots. One hectare can have up to 20 different owners. The Ribeiro Tostados are born in humid vineyards, where the cold often penetrates the bones and the landscape is one of rugged mountains and villages dotted throughout a green and enclosed Gallego countryside. They are a fine example of the importance of preserving cultural roots and taking them as far as they can go.

The Tostado wines are sweet and it can take ten years for their sugar to harmonize. They are expensive to produce and make a dent in the wallet. This long patient wait is what makes them so unique.

to the ‘caseta’, and from the ‘caseta’ to the barrel, are these treasures with the colour of time.

The wines are produced from the Treixadura, a white grape with a more neutral character than the Albariño.

The grapes are carefully selected by the producers from the harvest’s first bunches, which have the highest acidity and water surface area. The bunches are placed on a bed of straw on the ground, or strung out on a clothesline, as if they were new vines growing in the half-light of the ‘casetas’. Only in Italy are there producers who work the grape in this way, in the process known as appassimento, which dates back to Roman times when they wanted to preserve quality grapes for the following year.

In these ‘casetas’ - the 'sequeiros' or 'pendellos' with the windows wide open, the grapes turn into raisins, in which the acidity is preserved and the sugar concentrated, a drying process lasting at least three months to concentrate the essence of the landscape and the grape, producing a small watery reduction with which the raisined grapes go into the barrel for fermentation. From 100 kilos of raisined grapes, only 40 litres of wine will be produced. Alma de Reboreda is a fine example of a Ribeiro Tostado wine that, in this craft process, is stored for 10 months in oak barrels. Several of its vintages lie at rest in the cellars imbued with a very special atmosphere, a metaphor for the particularly patient production process, for the economic sacrifice made by the producers to preserve this culture for generations to come.

More than anything else, they are the remnants of a tradition that has inspired, consciously or unconsciously, this new wind that is blowing across Galicia today.

entre sus viñedos. La riqueza de sus variedades autóctonas y sus paisajes hacen que las tierras gallegas sean un ecosistema vivo y en constante movimiento. Movimiento generado por nuevas generaciones que aportan una nueva mirada y se aferran al deseo de recuperar variedades perdidas a través de estilos modernos y muy pulidos.

La pasión vinícola se ha ido transmitiendo generación tras generación y por este motivo, muchas personas jóvenes están volviendo a la viña, por convencimiento, por conocimiento y por afán emprendedor. El mundo del vino gallego está viviendo una transformación, con el conocimiento y la experiencia del pasado busca reinventar su lugar y abrir camino a un nuevo futuro.

Esta realidad solo puede darse en ecosistemas con bases sólidas que salvaguarden la identidad de una región.

Y esas bases están conformadas por destellos como los tostados de Ribeiro, esa pequeña denominación de origen tejida con microparcelas –en una hectárea pueden convivir hasta 20 propietarios distintos-. Entre parajes húmedos, con el frío que se cuela entre los huesos, y la vista alzada a las montañas escarpadas y a los pueblos pequeños que salpican el verde de acento gallego cerrado, los tostados de Ribeiro son el ejemplo de la importancia de salvaguardar las raíces culturales hasta sus últimas consecuencias.

Todo porque son vinos costosos de hacer, pueden tardar diez años en armonizar el azúcar, son dulces y hacen una muesca en la cartera. Esta espera es la que las convierte en vinos singulares.

Detrás de la artesanía de este proceso, que se asemeja mucho a una doble vendimia de la viña a la caseta, de la caseta a la barrica, se encuentran esos tesoros con el color del tiempo.

Elaborados con Treixadura, una uva blanca más neutra que el albariño, cuidadosamente seleccionada por los productores entre los primeros racimos de la vendimia, que concentran la mayor acidez y la mayor superficie acuosa. Los racimos son colocados sobre paja, en el suelo, o colgados en hileras de cuerdas de tender ropa, como si de nuevas vides en la penumbra de las casetas se tratara.

Solo en Italia hemos encontrado a quienes trabajan la uva de esta manera, con el estilo appassimento, que se retrotrae en la historia hasta el Imperio Romano y su afán por preservar las uvas de calidad hasta el año siguiente.

Es en esas casetas -los ‘sequeirosʼ o ‘pendellosʼ- con las ventanas abiertas de par en par donde se pasifican, donde se resguarda la acidez y se concentra el azúcar en las uvas, un proceso de al menos tres meses de secado para concentrar la esencia del paisaje y de la uva, que terminan con un pequeño reducto acuoso con el que las uvas pasan a la crianza en barrica. De cien kilos de uvas pasificadas, solo serán embotellados 40 litros de vino. Un buen ejemplo de tostados de Ribeiro son los vinos Alma de Reboreda, que en este proceso artesanal aguardan en barrica de roble diez meses. Varias de sus añadas descansan en la bodegas de las que sienten los intangibles porque son la metáfora de la singularidad de la espera, de la aceptación de un esfuerzo económico por parte de los productores para salvaguardar esta cultura de una generación a otra.

No son otra cosa que esos resquicios de tradición que inspira, consciente o inconscientemente, a esa nueva oleada de aires nuevos que soplan en Galicia hoy.

Su historia como viticultor se remonta a 1984, y con sus actuales 120 hectáreas en propiedad, que incluyen 21 Grands Crus, se ha convertido en la bodega de referencia del país teutón, con 8 vinos con 100 puntos Parker de los 23 de toda la historia de Alemania.

MARKUS MOLITOR AND THE RENAISSANCE OF THE MOSEL REGION

The Mosel region was world-famous a century ago and has been an important wine region ever since, but its real renaissance perhaps coincides with the arrival of the young Markus. When he came of age, he took over his father’s winery with a clear and determined objective: to produce Riesling in the tradition of the eight generations of the family and to raise the Mosel region to the highest echelons of the wine world.

Markus has boundless passion for wine growing and a taste for hard work, he barely speaks English and receives visitors in his overalls while still helping his workers to unload the grapes. Perhaps due to his austere nature, he chose not to join organisations such as the prestigious German VPD (Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates) but to create his own classification for his wines. Yet his obsession for physical work and his strong personality have not stopped him from gradually amassing, in just under 40 years, an incredible 120 ha of vineyards. These include 21 ‘Grand Crus’, some of which lie in the prestigious Zeltinger or Wehlener Sonnernuhr terroirs.

The winery, which was built at the end of the 19th century, was restored between 2009 and 2012. Contemporary and traditional materials were used with great effort made to preserve details from the time of its original construction. In fact, this winery is a reference among Mosel wineries and has won various awards, most notably the ‘Architekturpreis Wein’ (wine architecture prize) in 2013.

Molitor wines are characterised by their exceptional structure and depth of flavour, which combine perfectly with their freshness and elegance. In essence, they demonstrate the full potential of the Mosel terroir.

La región del Mosel fue famosa mundialmente hace un

centenar de años. Desde entonces ha tenido épocas en que no ha dejado de ser una zona vitivinícola importante, pero quizás su renacimiento coincide con la entrada del joven Markus quien, cumplida la mayoría de edad, se hace cargo de la bodega de su padre con un objetivo muy claro y conciso: producir Riesling siguiendo la tradición de ocho generaciones y encumbrar la región de Mosel a lo más alto del mundo vinícola.

Markus cuenta con una pasión desmedida por la viña y el trabajo intenso, apenas habla inglés y recibe las visitas con su mono de trabajo con una mano alzada mientras vuelve a ayudar a sus hombres a descargar las uvas. Su carácter austero le ha llevado a no entrar en organizaciones como el prestigioso VDP alemán y a crear una clasificación propia para sus vinos. Pero esta obsesión por el trabajo físico y su fuerte personalidad no han impedido que en apenas menos de 40 años haya adquirido viñas lentamente y posea en la actualidad la increíble cantidad de 120Ha., incluyendo 21 Grand Crus, algunos del prestigio de Zeltinger o Wehlener Sonnernuhr.

La bodega, que se construyó a finales del siglo XIX, fue restaurada entre 2009 y 2012. Se utilizaron materiales modernos e históricos, y se intentó conservar los detalles de cuando fue construida. De hecho, esta bodega es un referente entre las bodegas de Mosel y ha ganado varios premios, entre los que destaca el “Architekturpreis Wein 2013”.

Los vinos de Molitor destacan por una estructura y profundidad de sabor, que combinan perfectamente con la frescura y elegancia.

En esencia, nos muestran todo el potencial del terroir de Mosel.

MARKUS MOLITOR AND THE RENAISSANCE OF THE MOSEL REGION

The winery’s vineyards have been located between the village of Brauneberg and the town of Traben-Trarbach, close to the Luxembourg border, since the winery’s beginnings, but since the new acquisitions in 2001, they are also found along the Saar river. This vast area has a very interesting diversity of slate soils and different microclimates, making Molitor wines a magnificent expression of all of the Mosel grape varieties.

Most of the vineyards are planted with Riesling, but in some areas, selected by the owner, the excellent Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir grapes are cultivated.

Some of the vines are non-grafted and over 100 years old, and these form the basis of the prestigious Rieslings from the Mosel region. With steep slopes with gradients of up to 80%, harvesting is carried out by hand, very carefully and selectively. The harvest takes place fairly late, with all the risks that this implies, but it gives the grapes sufficient time to ripen, and thus achieve the perfect balance of flavour and acidity.

Los viñedos de esta bodega están emplazados, originariamente, entre las poblaciones de Brauneber y Traben-Trarbach (oeste de Alemania, cerca de la frontera con Luxemburgo), aunque desde 2001, con las nuevas adquisiciones que se hicieron, también los encontraremos a lo largo del río Saar. Este amplio territorio tiene como consecuencia una interesantísima diversidad de suelos de pizarras y diferentes microclimas que hacen que los vinos de Molitor sean una magnífica representación de todas las variedades de uva del Mosel.

La mayoría de los viñedos son de uva Riesling, pero en algunas áreas seleccionadas por el propietario, se cultivan las excelentes Pinot Blanc y Pinot Noir.

Algunas de las vides, no injertadas, acumulan más de un centenar de años de antigüedad, y son la base de los buscados Rieslings de Mosel. Con una inclinación del terreno de hasta el 80% (una barbaridad), las vendimias se realizan, de forma meticulosa y selectiva, de forma manual. La vendimia se realiza bastante tarde, con los riesgos que ello comporta, pero de esta forma dan a las uvas tiempo suficiente para que maduren, y consiguen así un correcto equilibrio entre sabor y acidez.

MARKUS MOLITOR AND THE RENAISSANCE OF THE MOSEL REGION

All of the wines are produced through spontaneous fermentation. No enzymes, improvers or other types of aids are used. The yeasts found naturally on the skins of the grapes convert the grape sugars into alcohol.

The old winery, carved into the slate, has high humidity and remains constantly cool. This provides perfect conditions for the slow fermentation of the wines, which is something the winemaker purposely seeks to achieve.

After a very slow fermentation at low temperature, the wines then spend several months in contact with their fine yeasts to acquire depth and body, which is very characteristic of Molitor wines. This process ends when winter is over and the temperatures start to rise.

Fermentation and maturation are carried out in both stainless-steel tanks and large, high-grade oak barrels with capacities of 1,000, 2,000 and 3,000 litres. The oak barrels are ideal for the production of high-quality

Rieslings and, thanks to the natural clarification and moderate contact with oxygen, they have been producing the same unmistakeable flavour for centuries.

Todos los vinos se producen mediante fermentación espontánea. No utilizan ni enzimas, ni mejoradores, ni tampoco otros tipos de ayuda. Las levaduras que se encuentran, de forma natural, en la piel de la uva, son las que convierten el azúcar y la uva en alcohol.

Después de una fermentación lentísima a baja temperatura los vinos pasan varios meses más sobre levaduras finas para dar profundidad y cuerpo (algo muy característico de los vinos de Molitor). Y este proceso termina, pasado el invierno, cuando las temperaturas comienzan a aumentar.

La antigua bodega, excavada en la pizarra, tiene una alta humedad y una temperatura permanente muy fresca, lo que es óptimo para que los vinos fermenten de forma muy lenta, lo cual es expresamente buscado por el viticultor.

LOS CÓDIGOS DE COLOR Los vinos de Molitor, tienen una codificación muy particular, ya que según el color de la cápsula, se define, de cara al consumidor, la categoría de sabor del vino.

La fermentación y maduración se realiza tanto en tanques de acero inoxidable como en grandes toneles de roble, de la mejor calidad, con capacidades de 1000, 2000 y 3000 litros. Bodegas Osborne is, without doubt, the jewel in the winemaking crown of Puerto

de Santa María, one of the three points of the famous “Sherry Triangle” along with Jerez de la Frontera and Sanlúcar de Barrameda.

Founded in 1772, it has the distinction of being one of the oldest wineries in the world, as well as a reference for those wishing to learn more about the history and unique character of the wines from this corner of Andalusia. Osborne’s importance, however, goes beyond mere wine production, since its most iconic advertising image, the famous silhouette of the bull often found on hills alongside the roads of Spain and created in 1956, has become a symbol of Spain itself.

As with other large family wineries in the Jerez region, the beating heart of Osborne is still its parent company with its ancient and noble bodega in El Puerto. It is there, in the “cathedral” on Calle Los Moros, where you can feel the march of time, the almost 250 years of history that have passed since Thomas Osborne Mann from the South of England moved to Cádiz at the end of the 18th century to realise his passion: the production of sherry. The pioneering spirit of the founder was passed on from generation to generation. Perhaps it is this enduring entrepreneurial mindset that is behind the success of the company, which has now spanned three centuries and remained in the hands of the same family. Today the sixth generation perpetuates its legacy in its bodega with wide walls and high ceilings, the home to a unique collection of historical soleras…

Marco de Jerez. Bodegas Osborne es, ni más ni menos, la gema que más resplandece en el escenario vinícola del Puerto de Santa María, uno de los tres vértices que delimitan el triángulo mágico del Marco de Jerez, junto a Jerez de la Frontera y Sanlúcar de Barrameda.

Fundada en 1772, tiene el mérito de ser una de las bodegas más antiguas del mundo, amén de una referencia fundamental para entender la historia y singularidad de los vinos de aquel recodo de Andalucía. Y no sólo eso: la trascendencia de Osborne supera el ámbito estrictamente vinícola, ya que su imagen publicitaria más emblemática, la famosa silueta del toro que campa a sus anchas por las carreteras de España, forma parte desde su creación –en 1956–, ha calado hasta tal punto que se ha convertido en un símbolo de identidad de este país.

Al igual que sucede con otras grandes bodegas familiares del Marco de Jerez, el corazón de Osborne sigue siendo su casa madre, la solariega bodega de El Puerto. Es allí, en la "catedral" de la calle Los Moros, donde se respira el paso de la historia, los casi 250 años que han transcurrido desde que Thomas Osborne Mann, natural del sur de Inglaterra se asentara en Cádiz, a fines del siglo XVIII, para dar origen a su pasión: elaborar vinos de jerez. El espíritu pionero del fundador logró trasmitirse generación a generación. Quizá la pervivencia de ese carácter emprendedor explica el éxito de la firma, que abarca ya tres siglos y que no ha dejado de estar en manos de la misma familia. La sexta generación continúa hoy su legado en su bodega de anchos muros y techos altos, hogar de una colección única de soleras históricas.

LIQUID GEMS IN THE LABYRINTH

In the intricate labyrinth tucked away in the Calle Los Moros ageing cellars in El Puerto de Santa María, you can inhale the delicious aroma that seeps through the pores of the sherry butts that contain the liquid gems. Here lies the most important collection of vintage wines in the Jerez region. This treasure, of incalculable value, includes five of the sherry house’s oldest soleras, whose wines make up the “RARE” range, with four other soleras from bodegas such as Blázquez or Domecq, producing the V.O.R.S. range (certified by the Jerez D.O. as being in the category of wines with an estimated average age of over 30 years). With a tiny production and highly prized by sherry connoisseurs and critics, each bottle in this collection of rare and very old sherries is a symbol in itself. It is the imprint of tradition, wisdom and time. The legacy of a vibrant history, the result of dedication and fortitude, in which the founder’s expert and idealistic steps still resonate.

At the recent Salón Gourmets in Madrid, I had the pleasure of conducting a tasting of the “Oenological Jewels of Osborne”, alongside Marcos Alguacil, Osborne’s winemaker. This was the perfect occasion not only to present the collection’s superb new visual identity but to try two vintage wines from the RARE range whose fabulous quality demonstrated the excellence the family’s finest offerings: Amontillado Solera AOS RARE, a solera created in 1903 by Tomás Osborne Guezala, the second Conde de Osborne, to commemorate the birth of his son Antonio. Its name, AOS, is a reference to the initials of Antonio Osborne followed by an S for “Solera”. The Count prohibited any wine being drawn from this solera until the year 1924 when his son would come of age. This was followed by the Oloroso Sibarita V.O.R.S., another very old solera, this one created far back in 1792. We also tried the Palo Cortado Capuchino V.O.R.S., one of the oldest soleras in the Jerez region which was created in 1790 to commemorate the arrival of the order of the Capuchin monks in Jerez and which has been included in the Osborne family collection for over a decade now. This exceptional demonstration culminated with the Pedro Ximénez RARE, a unique solera made up of a single barrel created in 1903.

The event also gave us a chance to appreciate the quality and character of some of the more “terrestrial” wines the Coquinero Fino, the perfect embodiment of the dry, marine and finely-honed character of the traditional Finos from El Puerto – and to discover wines previously unknown outside the sherry house, such as the La Honda Fino and Amontillado, which come from soleras dating from the end of the 18th or turn of the 19th centuries and were never bottled for commercial consumption.

En el intrincado laberinto que conforman las naves de crianza de las bodegas ubicadas en El Puerto de Santa María se respira, también, el delicioso aroma que se cuela a través de los poros de las botas que contienen las joyas enológicas que allí se conservan, que en su conjunto constituyen la colección más importante de vinos añejos del Marco de Jerez. Este tesoro, de valor incalculable, aúna cinco soleras muy antiguas de la propia casa, conocidos como la gama “RARE”, con otras cuatro soleras procedentes de bodegas como Blázquez o Domecq, la gama VORS (certificados por la D.O. Jerez en la categoría que engloba a los vinos con una edad media estimada en más de 30 años) de muy escasa producción, altamente valorados por los conocedores y la crítica, cada botella de esta colección de jereces raros y muy viejos es un símbolo en sí mismo.

Es la impronta de la tradición, la sabiduría y el tiempo. La herencia de una vibrante historia, hecha de dedicación y templanza, en la que aún resuenan los pasos expertos e idealistas de su fundador.

En la última edición del Salón Gourmets de Madrid, quien firma estas líneas tuvo la suerte de dirigir una cata de las "Joyas Enológicas de Osborne", junto a Marcos Alguacil, enólogo de la bodega. La ocasión fue propicia no sólo para presentar la flamante y exquisita identidad visual de la colección sino para probar dos vinos añejos de la gama Rare cuya calidad soberbia pone en valor las referencias más excelsas de la familia: Amontillado Solera AOS RARE, solera fundada en 1903 por el II Conde de Osborne D. Tomás Guezala en conmemoración del nacimiento de su hijo Antonio. Su nombre, AOS, hace referencia así a las iniciales de Antonio Osborne y la S a “Solera”.

El Conde prohibió toda saca de esta solera hasta el año 1924, cuando su hijo cumpliese la mayoría de edad. Le siguió Oloroso Sibarita V.O.R.S, otra antiquísima solera fundada en 1792. Cautivó también el Palo Cortado Capuchino V.O.R.S., una de las soleras más antiguas de todo el Marco de Jerez, fundada en 1790 en conmemoración de la llegada de la orden de los monjes capuchinos a Jerez y que se consolidó dentro de la colección de la familia Osborne hace ya más de una década. La excepcional demostración culminó con el vino Pedro Ximénez RARE, una solera única de un solo tonel fundada en 1903.

Incluso este evento sirvió para descubrir la calidad y carácter de vinos más "terrenales" –el fino Coquinero, que define con precisión el carácter seco, marino y afilado de los finos tradicionales de El Puerto– y descubrir referencias hasta el momento inéditas allende los muros de Osborne, como el fino y el amontillado La Honda, que proceden de soleras datadas a finales del siglo XVIII o comienzos del XIX, pero que jamás fueron embotelladas para una distribución masiva.

Although, time did not allow us to include other “stratospheric” wines, such as the Amontillado 51-1ª, the Pedro Ximenez Venerable, or the medium Olorosos Solera BC200, Solera India or the excellent Solera PΔP from the RARE family collection, there is no doubt that the experience served to demonstrate the historical, oenological, and not to mention, superb, drinking qualities of the wonders that Osborne has hidden away in its sacred cellars.

Aún cuando por razones de tiempo la citada cata dejó para otra ocasión la degustación de otros vinos estratosféricos –como el Amontillado 51-1ª y el Pedro Ximenez Venerable, o los olorosos medium Solera BC200, Solera India o el excelso Solera P∆P, de la colección familiar RARE– resulta indudable que la experiencia fue suficiente para dar fe de la dimensión histórica, enológica –y placentera– de las maravillas que esconde Osborne en sus sacrosantas naves.

A HISTORICAL RELATIONSHIP Priorat’s wine history dates back to the 12th century and the first Carthusian community, which had arrived from France and decided to stay put. They set about planting vineyards on the region’s steep and stony terrain and then cultivated the vine for centuries thereafter.

The Torres family’s relationship with this area is much more recent as it goes back to the turn of the 20th century, when the wines from this region first started to be commercialised.

FAMILIA TORRES Y EL PRIORAT, UNA RELACIÓN HISTÓRICA El origen de la historia vinícola del Priorat se remonta al siglo XII, con la llegada de la primera comunidad cartujana, provenientes de la región de la Provenza.

A partir de su llegada, se dedicaron a plantar viñedos en terrenos empinados y pedregosos de la región y cultivaron viñedos durante siglos. La relación de la Familia Torres con esta zona es bastante más cercana, y se remonta a principios del siglo XX, cuando se empezó a comercializar vinos de esta región.

The proof that the Torres family has had a

relationship with the Priorat since the turn of the last century, comes in the form of a bottle of 1923 "Priorato Superior", bottled in 1932 under the Coronas brand name. But they became more involved in the region in the mid-nineties, cultivating and rebuilding the name of the Priorat after a certain period of “decadence”.

They decided to return to the area and plant vineyards in Porrera and El Lloar, where they also built a small winery. But they waited 10 years before making wines from the Garnacha, Cariñena and Syrah vines they planted there at that time.

Two decades since the first plantations and the majority of grapes go into the production of Salmos, a wine made with the three grape varieties mentioned above and whose grapes come mostly from their own vineyards.

This wine is a tribute to those Carthusian monks of the Scala Dei monastery who introduced the cultivation of the vine to the area back in the 12th century. The wine is aged for around 14 months in French oak barrels, and the current vintage on the market, the 2016, picked up the Priorat Trophy, the highest regional award, from the prestigious International Wine Challenge 2019.

relación con el Priorato desde los inicios del pasado siglo, es la existencia de una botella de un “Priorato Superior” de la añada 1923, que se embotelló en 1932 bajo la marca Coronas. Pero cuando más se han implicado en cultivar y regenerar el nombre de la zona fue a mediados de los noventa, después de una época ciertamente decadente del Priorat, en que decidieron volver allí y plantar viñedos en Porrera y El Lloar, donde, además, se construyó una pequeña bodega.

Pero se esperaron 10 años para poder empezar a utilizar los viñedos de garnacha, cariñena y syrah que se plantaron en su momento.

Después de dos décadas de las primeras plantaciones, la mayoría de uvas se destinan a la elaboración del Salmos. Un vino elaborado con los tres tipos de uva mencionados anteriormente y cuyas uvas provienen, mayoritariamente, de viña propia. Este vino es un homenaje a los monjes de la cartuja de Scala Dei, que en el siglo XII introdujeron el cultivo de los viñedos. Es un vino que envejece unos 14 meses en barricas de roble francés, y la añada que está en el mercado, la 2016, ha sido premiada con el Priorat Trophy, máximo galardón regional del prestigioso certamen International Wine Challenge 2019.

In addition to Salmos, two other wines are produced from old vines with very small production. One is Perpetual, born from vines aged between 80 and 100 years that grow in "costers " (very steep slopes), in five different villages (El Lloar, Porrera, Bellmunt, Torroja and El Molar) and in the Licorella (slate) soils typical of the Priorat. This wine is made from the CariĂąena and Garnacha varietals. The grapes are very carefully sorted and the wine is vinified in separate batches in small stainless-steel vats. 70% of the wines ages for about 18 months in new French oak barrels and the remaining 30% in 25-hectolitre foudres to minimise the impact of the wood.

Además del Salmos, se elaboran dos vinos más provenientes de viñas viejas, de producciones muy limitadas. Uno es el Perpetual, nacido de cepas que tienen entre 80 y 100 años y que crecen en “costers” (laderas muy pronunciadas), en cinco municipios diferentes (El Lloar, Porrera, Bellmunt, Torroja y El Molar) y en unos suelos de licorella, típicos del Priorat.

Este vino se elabora con las variedades cariñena y garnacha. Se hace una exhaustiva selección de la uva y se vinifican por lotes separados en pequeños depósitos de acero. El 70% envejece durante unos 18 meses en barricas nuevas de roble francés y el 30% restante en fudres de 25 hectólitros, para minimizar el impacto de la madera.

The other wine produced is the Mas de la Rosa. This wine was released at the start of the year. It is the Familia Torres' most exclusive wine with a recommended retail price of €370 and, naturally, it has become the icon of the Priorat winery. It is a wine that takes the name of the place from which it hails. It is born in a 1.9-hectare plot of old Cariñena and Garnacha vines, over 80 years old, pruned in the traditional “en vaso” (bush) style on the "costers" referred to early. In its first vintage (2016), only 2,059 bottles of this wine have been released on the market with allocations for the top restaurants in 15 countries. In fact, 80% will go to export markets (Canada, Germany, England, Japan, China, Hong Kong and USA) so diners can feel extremely privileged to be able to try a glass of this exclusive wine! Its excellent quality has been endorsed by the ratings received from Parker (94+) and Decanter (94).

Este vino se ha dado a conocer a principios de año. Es el vino más exclusivo de Familia Torres, con un precio recomendado de 370€, y, obviamente, se ha convertido en el icono de la bodega en el Priorat. Es un vino que toma el nombre del paraje del que proviene, y nace de un viñedo de 1,9 hectáreas de viejas cariñenas y garnachas con más de 80 años y que evolucionan en vaso tradicional y en los anteriormente citados “costers”. Es un vino del que, en su primera añada (2016), sólo salen al mercado 2.059 botellas y que serán asignadas por cupos a restaurantes gastronómicos de 15 países. El 80% se destinará a mercados exteriores (Canadá, Alemania, Inglaterra, Japón, China, Hong Kong y USA). Por lo que se podrán sentir muy afortunados si consiguen beber alguna copa de este exclusivo vino. Su calidad viene avalada por las puntuaciones de Parker (94+) y Decanter (94).

FAMILIA TORRES AND THE PRIORAT, A HISTORICAL RELATIONSHIP

The Familia Torres' business in Priorat has been headed by the fifth generation of this family that boasts a centuries-old winemaking tradition, first under the management of Mireia Torres and a few years ago with Miguel Torres at the helm, and always working in close collaboration with Jordi Foraster, the winemaker at the Priorat winery.

The winery’s latest initiative is an experimental plantation of a small plot of vines in the Els Tossals area, where it has acquired 15 ha. of land, and which, at 746 metres altitude, will be the highest vineyard planted in Licorella slate soil in the Priorat. This is a long-term project intended to combat climate change, the biggest challenge facing the wine industry today.

El proyecto de Familia Torres en el Priorat ha sido liderado por la quinta generación de esta familia de tradición vitivinícola centenaria, primero bajo la dirección de Mireia Torres y desde hace unos años con Miguel Torres al frente, y contando siempre con la colaboración del enólogo de la bodega del Priorat, Jordi Foraster.

La última apuesta incluida en este proyecto es una plantación experimental de una pequeña parcela, en la zona de Els Tossals, donde han adquirido 15 ha. de terreno, y que será el viñedo de licorella más alto del Priorat, a 746 metros de altura. Es un proyecto a muy largo plazo pensado para afrontar el cambio climático, el mayor reto al que se enfrenta el sector en la actualidad.

ALBARIÑO Known both in Spain and internationally, Albariño is virtually always associated with Galicia, although it is also found in Portugal and areas of Cantabria, Castilla León and Catalonia. It is said to have been first planted in the valleys along the Camino de Santiago (Saint James’ Way) by Cistercian monks in the 12th century. As these monks came from Alsace, people have always looked for a similarity between the Albariño and grapes from other countries, such as the Riesling or the Petit Manseng. Albariño is also known as Albarina, Alvarin Blanc, Alvarinha, Alvarinho, Azal Blanc, Galego and Galeguinho. It expresses itself best as a monovarietal, but you can also find it blended with other grape varieties, most often Galician. In terms of styles, there are producers who age it in barrels, but the result is not always great, because the varietal’s high aromatic content is best left “exposed” and not masked by oak. Its aromas are mainly those of white fruit (green apple or pear), stone fruit (peach and apricot), flowers (jasmine and acacia), citrus (lime and tangerine) and aromatic herbs.

Agile, refreshing, pleasant, extremely palatable and so sincere that the aromatic notes come through in the taste of the wine. Acidity has always been its defining characteristic but you can sometimes detect saline notes derived from the limestone soil in which the vines are planted.

Recently, some producers have been making a more honeyed Albariño with greater texture that makes the wine easier to drink and not so fresh and incisive.

It logically pairs nicely with produce from the same region, seafood from the Atlantic for example. Broadly speaking it is best to pair freshness with freshness.

Conocida tanto a nivel nacional como internacional, a esta

variedad de uva, se la identifica directamente solo al oírla con Galicia aunque también la podemos encontrar en Portugal, zonas de Cantabria, Castilla León o Catalunya. Según se cuenta, fueron los monjes de la orden del Císter quienes la implantaron en el siglo XII plantándola en los valles del Camino de Santiago. Estos monjes provenían de Alsacia y es por eso que siempre se ha buscado una similitud con distintas uvas de otros orígenes como la Riesling o la Petit Manseg entre otras. También se la conoce como albarina, alvarín blanc, alvarinha, alvarinho, azal blanc, galego y galeguinho.

Como monovarietal es como mejor se expresa aunque también la podemos encontrar combinada con otras clases de uva, normalmente, siempre gallegas. A nivel de elaboración podemos encontrar quien lo envejece en barrica… el resultado no es el mejor, ya que debido a su contenido aromático lo mejor es dejarlo expuesto y no arriesgando a que la madera esconda sus aromas. Estos aromas principalmente son de fruta blanca (manzana verde o pera), frutas de hueso (melocotón y albaricoque) notas florales (jazmín y acacia) cítricos (lima y mandarina) e hierbas aromáticas. Ágil, refrescante, agradable, de buen pasar y tan sincero que encontramos las notas aromáticas en el sabor del vino. La acidez siempre ha sido su característica principal pero, en ocasiones, podemos encontrar notas salinas debido al suelo calcáreo donde reposan las viñas. En los últimos años los elaboradores hacen albariños más melosos, con más textura que los hacen más agradables y no tan frescos e incisivos.

El maridaje de paisaje es un buen argumento para ponerlo en una mesa donde tengamos los frutos de mar que nos da el Atlántico. A grandes rasgos, el elemento de refresco siempre es bienvenido para combinarlo.

Growing next to the Ribera del Miño, we find vines (40 years old) planted on slopes, in sandy soil and pebbly terrain. The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected in the vineyards. This is a fine example of Albariño expressing the salinity derived from the terroir. Very pleasant on the palate, fleshy, well-honed, round and above all, long.

When you see photos of Alsace, they usually depict lovely idyllic landscapes and there is an air of tranquillity about the place that you just could not imagine in a cosmopolitan city such as the one I currently live in. Well, Alsace really is like that. Over the seven days that I had the pleasure of spending in this wine-producing region, I found myself immersed in that tranquillity and the relaxed pace of life of the lovely villages and towns that I visited with my family.

Since the trip from my home city to

our destination was long (over 10 hours’ drive, including breaks), we decided to stop over in Lyon, which is situated about four hours’ drive from our final destination.

FRANCIA We arrived in the middle of the afternoon and after leaving our luggage at the Hotel Mercure Lyon Centre Saxe Lafayette ESPAÑA (4*, a bit outside the main centre, but very practical, clean and offering all the services you’d want for a one-night stay), we headed for the city's historical centre. There, we walked around the city's old quarter, visited the cathedral, and soaked up the city’s atmosphere. For dinner, we had made a reservation at a typical Lyonnais restaurant, one of the so-called “bouchons lyonnais”, Daniel & Denise, with cuisine by chef Joseph Viola. It’s a small restaurant (just a dozen tables) located in a semiresidential neighbourhood up on one of the city’s hills.

There, we enjoyed a perfectly-prepared dinner as well as some excellent wine from the Rhône Valley (Aléofane Crozes Hermitage 2016), which was suggested by the restaurant’s sommelier.

Cuando ves fotos de Alsacia, piensas que son paisajes idílicos, bellos, y que se respira un aire de tranquilidad que en una ciudad cosmopolita como en la que yo vivo es imposible de tener. Pues ciertamente, así es. En los 7 días que tuve el placer de viajar hasta esta zona vitivinícola, me “empapé” de dicha tranquilidad y del ritmo relajado de los habitantes de las diferentes poblaciones que visité con mi familia.

Como el desplazamiento era largo

desde mi ciudad hasta nuestro destino (más de 10 horas en coche, con paradas ALSACE incluidas), decidimos hacer una primera parada en Lyon, que queda a unas 4 horas de nuestro destino final. Llegamos a media ITALIA tarde y después de dejar las maletas en el Hotel Mercure Lyon Centre Saxe Lafayette (4*, un poco desplazado del centro, pero muy práctico, limpio, y con los servicios necesarios para pasar una noche) nos dirigimos al Vieux Lyon. Allí pudimos pasear por su barrio antiguo, visitar la catedral y disfrutar del ambiente callejero, en el buen sentido de la palabra. Para cenar, habíamos reservado en un restaurante típico de Lyon, de los denominados “bouchon lyonnais”: Daniel & Denise, del chef Joseph Viola. Es un pequeño restaurante (apenas una docena de mesas) que se encuentra en la parte alta de la ciudad, el Croix Rosé, en el que disfrutamos de una cena muy cuidada y también de un excelente vino del Valle del Ródano (Aléofane Crozes Hermitage 2016), sugerencia de la sumiller del restaurante.

The next day, after breakfast, we walked around the centre of Lyon once more and went up to one of the city’s many viewpoints. From there, we could see the city skyline and the Rhône, one of the two rivers that run through the city (the other is the Saône). We still had four hours’ drive to reach our final destination, Eguisheim, in the heart of Alsace. There, we had rented a typical Alsatian house with four stories including the attic. Once we had all settled into our rooms, and after resting for a bit, we went for a walk to explore the town. Since it was practically night, the day tourists had already been and gone, and the only people about were the few inhabitants of the town and a handful of tourists who, like us, were looking for a place to eat. At the suggestion of a local, we went to a pizzeria, Restaurant Dagsbourg. Seeing the local inhabitants dining in the restaurant, we guessed that we had made the right choice and we weren’t wrong! We enjoyed pizza, spaghetti, and cutlets with potatoes. The day was over and it was time to rest.

The following day began in Eguisheim. This town has a most peculiar layout: its streets have been created starting from the town’s central square, where most of the shops can be found, and are circular, so you begin to walk and eventually end up back at your starting point (as long as you don’t switch to a parallel street). The houses are all similar in terms of their structure: 3-4 floors, and all are very narrow (there are usually no more than 1-2 rooms per floor). The town has a tourist train which, as far as we could tell, does not run every day (check schedules and days) and which, in addition to touring the town, visits the surrounding vineyards. We decided to walk around the town for a bit, stopping to enjoy two short wine tastings. The most interesting was that of Leon Beyer, which has a small store in the town's central square. They offer interesting wines that I had already had the pleasure of trying with the Selectus Wine tasting panel in the past, and which are some of Alsace’s most highly-regarded wines. If you want to try the local wines, the wineries in Eguisheim (there are over 15) do not require a reservation, but visitors must be mindful of the opening hours. If you are visiting the town for just a day, you won’t have time to visit all of the wineries, plus, they close quite early (6:00 p.m.).

But wine tourism is not just about wine, as we have already said in other articles on the subject. It also includes local culture, gastronomy, history, people, and so on…

La siguiente jornada empezó en Eguisheim. Es un pueblo que tiene una forma peculiar, ya que sus calles están creadas a partir de la plaza central del pueblo, donde se encuentra la mayoría del comercio local, y tienen forma circular, de forma que cuando empiezas a caminar, finalizas el recorrido en el punto de inicio (siempre que no cambies a una calle paralela). Las casas son todas similares en cuanto al concepto estructural: 3-4 plantas, y son todas muy verticales (no suele haber más de 1-2 habitaciones por planta. Existe un tren turístico, que por lo que pudimos comprobar no funciona todos los días (consultar horarios y días) y que, además de dar una vuelta por la población, accede a la zona de viñedos que rodean el pueblo.

Optamos por caminar un rato y dimos una vuelta por el pueblo e hicimos dos breves degustaciones de vinos. La más interesante fue la de Leon Beyer, que tiene una pequeña tienda en la comentada plaza central del pueblo. Vinos interesantes que ya habíamos tenido la oportunidad de poder catar con nuestro comité de cata en años anteriores y que tienen buena fama entre los vinos de Alsacia. Las bodegas que hay en Eguisheim (más de una quincena) no necesitan de cita previa para degustar sus vinos, pero hay que tener en cuenta los horarios de apertura y cierre ya que si se visita en un solo día la población, no da tiempo a visitar todas las bodegas… además de que cierran muy pronto (18h.)

Al día siguiente nos fuimos a dar una vuelta de nuevo por el centro de Lyon y accedimos hasta uno de los miradores que hay en la parte alta, en la Croix Rosé de la ciudad, desde la que se podía observar el skyline de la ciudad, y el Ródano, uno de los dos ríos que atraviesan la ciudad (el otro es el Saona). Nos quedaban aún unas 4 horas hasta llegar a nuestro destino final, Eguisheim, en el corazón de Alsacia. Allí habíamos alquilado una casa típica alsaciana. Una vez acomodados nos fuimos a dar una vuelta para conocer la población. Al ser ya prácticamente tarde/noche, los turistas que se prodigan durante el día, ya se habían marchado y quedaban los escasos habitantes de la población y cuatro turistas que aprovechaban para buscar un lugar donde cenar. Nosotros formábamos parte de ellos y buscamos un lugar para poder reponer fuerzas y, siguiendo una recomendación lugareña, nos adentramos en una pizzería, el Restaurant Dagsbourg.

La verdad es que al ver gente local en el restaurante, pensamos que habíamos acertado con la elección, y no decepcionó. Pizza, spaguettis y alguna escalopa con patatas fueron las opciones de los diferentes miembros de la familia. Se acababa la jornada y era hora de descansar.

Pero no todo es vino en un viaje enoturístico. Como ya hemos comentado en algún artículo anterior relacionado con este tema, la cultura, la gastronomía, la historia, las gentes, …, también forman parte de estos viajes.

Colmar, a town located less than 10 km from Eguisheim (less than 20 minutes’ drive) is one of the region’s most important towns. There are more tourists here and, as you would expect, more restaurants and services than in most of the surrounding small towns. Watch out for the speed checks coming in and out of the town, and while driving through it, since there are several of these. It’s a good idea to make a reservation for lunch, especially considering that the kitchen opening times are not exactly the same as in Spain — more than one restaurant’s kitchen closes at 2:00 p.m. on the dot. Our choice on this occasion was the “Brasserie du Tanneurs ”, a traditional Alsatian restaurant with classic Alsatian food. Here, I didn't pair my lunch with wine, but rather with a good Alsatian beer.

Colmar is crisscrossed by canals, navigable in certain areas. If you don’t watch out, you can knock your head because the bridges are very low and close to the water level. We decided to take a walk first.

Don't miss Vieux Colmar and, above all, Petite Venise, where you’ll find these navigable waterways. The market is another of Colmar's main attractions but, as always, bear in mind the opening hours. Since we went with our children, and they were already tired of walking, we did the touristy thing and got on the train that tours the city. That way, in theory, you don’t miss the most important, representative attractions of Colmar (By the way, the driver really puts on a display of skill as there are some very tight spots along the route!)

The following day started off with a good breakfast enjoyed in our holiday home. We had a visit planned to one of Alsace’s most internationally famous wineries, which is also part of the exclusive PFV (Primum Familiae Vini) group. This group is made up of 12 very old family-owned wine companies: Symington, Clarence Dillon, Famille Perrin, Pol Roger, Vega Sicilia, Joseph Drouhin, Sassicaia, Torres, Antinori, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, Egon Muller and Hugel, the winery in question.

Colmar, población situada a menos de 10km. de Eguisheim (menos de 20 minutos en coche) es una de las poblaciones importantes de la zona. Aquí el turismo es más abundante y, como es de esperar, hay más restaurantes y servicios que en la mayoría de los pequeños pueblecitos de los alrededores. Tengan cuidado con los radares, al entrar y salir de la población, y al circular dentro de ella… hay unos cuantos… Es recomendable reservar mesa anticipadamente para comer y sobretodo tener en cuenta que los horarios de cocina no son exactamente como en nuestro país… Más de un restaurante a las 14.00 ya cierra cocina… Nuestra opción en esta ocasión fue la Brasserie du Tanneurs . Un restaurante típico de Alsacia, en la que la comida que degustamos también fue típica, y no la acompañé de un vino, sino de una buena cerveza alsaciana.

Colmar tiene unos canales que recorren la ciudad y que se pueden navegar, aunque en según qué zonas del recorrido, te puedes llevar un coscorrón si no estás atento, ya que los puentes están muy ajustados al nivel del agua. Nosotros optamos por dar un paseo, primero a pie.

No dejen de visitar el Vieux Colmar y, sobretodo, La Petite Venise, donde encontrarán esas calles navegables. El mercado es otra de las atracciones de Colmar, pero, como siempre, hay que tener en cuenta los horarios… Como íbamos con nuestros hijos, y ya estaban cansados de caminar, hicimos de turistas y nos subimos al tren que recorre la ciudad. De esta forma, en principio, no te pierdes los lugares más importantes y representativos de Colmar. Por cierto, gran habilidad la del chófer, ya que en algunos lugares… ya se lo imaginan…

Un buen desayuno en casa sirvió para iniciar la siguiente jornada.

Nos esperaba una visita de una de las bodegas referentes de Alsacia, mundialmente conocida, y que forma parte del exclusivo grupo PFV (Primum Familiae Vini) en el que se encuentran 12 exclusivas e históricas bodegas: Symington, Clarence Dillon, Famille Perrin, Pol Roger, Vega Sicilia, Joseph Drouhin, Sassicaia, Torres, Antinori, Barón Philippe de Rothschild, Egon Muller y Hugel, que es la bodega en cuestión.

Hugel's head office, winery and vineyards are in the village of Riquewihr. In fact, the winery is in the very centre of the village. That means that during the harvest, in addition to being awash with visitors, the village is also overrun by a great number of tractors taking the grapes harvested in the vineyards to the vats in the winery. In addition to these “problems”, the streets are very narrow, which means that it can be absolute chaos!

To visit the winery and/or enjoy a tasting we do recommend you book ahead in this case. Almost the entire winery is housed in the lower part of a 16th-century building.

Inside are very old barrels, most of which are over 100 years old. In fact, there is a Guinness Book of Records certificate on display stating that Hugel has the oldest barrel still in use in the world. It dates back to 1715.

And the next tasting was extraordinary. Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Gewurztraminer, late harvests, “Sélection de Grains Nobles”, etc., a top-class tasting that we are not likely to forget in a hurry.

Where does one eat in Riquewihr? We decided to take a punt and looked at a couple of places, but neither appealed to us much. So, we went for the safer option. We asked our contact at Hugel for a recommendation which turned out to be a restaurant just 200 metres down the street from the winery. And it was a great choice.

La Grappe d’Or is a very elegant restaurant with great service that also offered traditional Alsatian cuisine. A glass of the house Pinot Noir accompanied this feast that included Duck Foie Gras and Filet Mignon. We were soon “restored” and ready to set off again!

That afternoon, we were expected in Wettolsheim... but we’ll tell you about that in the next instalment.

ENOTURISMO EN PRIMERA PERSONA: ALSACIA (1)

Hugel tiene su sede, bodega y viñedos en la población de Riquewihr. De hecho la bodega está en el centro del pueblo, y eso implica que en la época de vendimia, además de colapsarse por la gran cantidad de visitantes que hay entonces, también lo hace por la cantidad ingente de tractores que cargan con las uvas recogidas en el campo y que hay que entrar en los depósitos. Además de estos “problemas” hay que tener en cuenta la estrechez de las calles, por lo que la situación puede llegar a ser ciertamente caótica.

Para visitar esta bodega, y/o hacer una degustación, en este caso, sí que les recomendamos que hayan reservado previamente una cita. Casi toda la bodega está situada en la parte baja de un edificio del siglo XVI y dentro hay unos toneles muy antiguos, con más de 100 años la mayoría de ellos. De hecho, existe una certificación de Guinness (los de los récords…), allí expuesta, de que Hugel tiene el tonel más antiguo del mundo que todavía está en uso, y que data de 1715. Una bodega histórica…

Y la posterior degustación fue extraordinaria. Rieslings, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Gewurztraminer, Vendimias tardías, Selection de Grains Nobles,… una gran cata que recordaremos durante mucho tiempo. ¿Dónde comer en Riquewihr? Nos lanzamos un poco a la aventura y entramos en un par de establecimientos pero no nos quedamos demasiado convencidos en ninguno de ellos. Así que decidimos optar por una solución, a priori, más segura. Preguntamos a nuestro contacto en Hugel quien nos recomendó ir a un restaurante a 200 metros de la bodega, calle abajo. Y acertó de pleno. La Grappe d´Or. Un restaurante, también con comida típica alsaciana, muy elegante y con una exquisita atención. Una copa de un Pinot Noir “de la casa” acompañó este ágape del que disfrutamos mucho. Foie Gras Canard, Filet Mignon, y una Grand Crème fueron algunos de los platos que degustamos y que nos sirvieron para reponer fuerzas.

Y por la tarde… nos esperaban en Wettolsheim… pero se lo contaremos en la próxima edición…

This new wine was released for last year’s Christmas season.

It is made from 3 grape varieties, Chardonnay, Xarel·lo and Albariño, vinified separately, from the harvesting and fermentation with native yeasts to the 9 months’ ageing in French oak. We are pleasantly surprised by how well the oak has integrated into the wine. It gives the wine just what it needs, which is aromatic complexity, without sacrificing any of its fruity expression.

The final blend is an attractive and very aromatic wine releasing aromas of acacia and ripe fruit (peaches and apricots). Good acidity and a creamy character are two of the main features of this wine which, with its expressive and easy-drinking character, is aimed at all types of wine drinker.

It continues its aromatic expression on the palate, with a very long and somewhat drying finish showing lovely soft tannin, the result of the months spent ageing in wood. The end result is a wine with personality, finesse and elegance, which suits all palates and pockets. It titivates the taste buds and invites you to carry on drinking.

Una novedad que salió al mercado durante la pasada campaña de navidad. Tres variedades vinificadas por separado, desde la vendimia y fermentación con levaduras indígenas, hasta la crianza en roble francés durante nueve meses de las uvas Chardonnay, Xarel·lo y Albariño. Sorprende gratamente la integración del vino con la madera, le aporta lo que el vino necesita, que es complejidad aromática, sin perder ni un ápice de su expresión afrutada.

El asamblaje final es un vino atractivo, muy aromático, destacan desde las flores como la acacia hasta la fruta madura, melocotón y albaricoque. En boca su acidez y cremosidad son dos de las principales características de este vino pensado para todo tipo de público por su carácter expresivo y de fácil paladar.

Sigue su expresión aromática en boca, con un final muy largo y algo secante, con el tanino muy amable, resultado de los meses de crianza en madera. El resultado es un vino con mucha personalidad, sin perder su finura y elegancia, apto para todo tipo de paladares y de bolsillos. Este vino activa las papilas gustativas e invita a beber.

This wine comes from pre-phylloxera vineyards and from the first Verdejo plantings in the Iberian peninsula. It is produced according to the principles of organic or “logical” viticulture, as they describe it at the winery. The owners’ values are respect for history, heritage, tradition and the environment, along with a commitment to quality and technological innovation. The Ruiz Aragoneses family, who are also owners of the Pago de Carraovejas winery, acquired Ossian in 2013.

Thanks, in part, to its work on the recovery of old vineyards, this business is continuing to grow. The wine has a bright golden yellow hue and the nose discloses aromas of yeast and bread, probably derived from its fermentation with native yeasts. Ossian is reminiscent of a Burgundy, very aromatic and toasted on the nose. The wine is forceful on the palate showing the bâtonnage (stirring of the lees) carried out during its 9 months spent ageing in barrel.

A bitter note then appears on the palate, along with unctuousness and a long finish. Notes of orange, lemon and cinnamon mingle with balsamic overtones. This is a fine white wine, with great elegance and a capacity to develop further in the bottle, which will be fabulous with food.

Procedente de viñedos prefiloxéricos, de las primeras plantaciones de Verdejo de la península, se elabora este vino bajo los parámetros de la viticultura ecológica o lógica, como ellos mismos la definen. Historia, patrimonio, tradición, respeto por el entorno, compromiso de calidad e innovación tecnológica son los principios bajo los que trabajan los propietarios de la bodega, la familia Ruiz Aragoneses, también dueños de la bodega Pago de Carraovejas, desde que adquirieron Ossian en 2013.

Un proyecto que no para de crecer por su trabajo de recuperación de viñedos viejos. De color amarillo dorado brillante, en nariz destacan sus aromas de levadura, de pan, seguramente por su fermentación con levaduras autóctonas.

Ossian recuerda los vinos de Borgoña, muy aromático, tostados en nariz, y en boca un vino con fuerza marcado por su trabajo de batonage mientras envejece en barrica durante nueve meses.

La nota amarga aparece en boca junto con la untuosidad y el largo recuerdo. Notas de naranja, limón y canela se mezclan con los balsámicos. Un gran vino blanco, de una gran elegancia y capacidad para crecer en botella, y muy gastronómico.

Se elabora con Albillo Mayor fermentado en barrica francesa de un año al 50% y en depósito el otro 50%. Un proceso que culmina con seis meses de crianza en madera francesa y con un trabajo sobre lías.

This wine was a personal project of Belén and Iván Sanz with links to the past. These grapes evoke, not only the childhood of the two brothers, but also tradition, authenticity, uniqueness and differentiation. A wine that is born of simplicity and that carries the value of our forefathers’ time and work within the bottle.

Este vino nace del deseo personal de Belén e Iván Sanz como un proyecto, vinculado al pasado. Esas uvas evocan, no solo la infancia de los dos hermanos, sino también evocan tradición, autenticidad, singularidad y diferenciación. Un vino que nace de la sencillez y que transporta el valor del tiempo y del trabajo de nuestros antepasados expresado dentro de la botella.

Its production is under a thousand bottles, so if you manage to get hold of one, you'll be one of the lucky ones! The scant production is due to the fact that there are only a few Albillo vines aged over 80 years old interspersed among the winery’s Tempranillo vines.

Light yellow hue with pale golden tints, agile in the glass. The nose discloses aromas of moss and wellbalanced, distinct yellow fruit aromas, peaches and apricots, along with a few floral hints. Honey notes come through when the glass is swirled. The wine is glyceric across the palate right through to the finish. The subtle acidity, a characteristic of the varietal, balances the more powerful and more obvious unctuosity. The glycerin gives the impression of ripe fruit and weight on the palate. The density combines with some toasted notes and a long-lingering and somewhat bitter finish.

The final bitterness appears more heightened with some salinity on the end palate, which gives the impression of minerality, resulting in an elegant and very agreeable wine.

Su producción no llega a las mil botellas, así que si conseguís tener una en vuestras manos seréis afortunados.

La escasa producción se debe a las pocas cepas de Albillo que se encuentran de forma intercalada entre las cepas de Tempranillo propiedad de la bodega, de más de 80 años.

De color amarillo ligero, con reflejos dorados pálidos, y ágil en copa. En nariz destaca el musgo y la fruta amarilla de hueso bien equilibradas y reconocibles, melocotón y albaricoque, con ciertos toques florales. Al mover la copa destacan unos recuerdos amielados. En boca parece una carga glicérica que acompaña al vino durante todo su recorrido en boca y en su post gusto.

La sutil acidez, no muy marcada propia de la variedad, equilibra esa untuosidad más poderosa y destacable. La glicerina aporta la sensación de peso en boca y de frutas maduras. Se combina la densidad con los tostados y un final persistente y algo amargo.

El amargor final aparece más realzado junto con algo de salinidad al final del recorrido, lo que le aporta sensación de mineralidad. Dando, como resultado, un vino elegante y muy agradable.

AMAZONA - AIRE ROSADO 2018 BODEGAS TÁRSILA

Vinos de la Tierra de Castilla y León / La Cisterniga, Valladolid - Spain / www.bodegastarsila.com / P.V.P.: 7,50€ / 100% Petit Verdot The Amazona range of wines was presented last March to coincide with International Women's Day. This is a new line of wines that is more modern, current, fresh, carefree and very accessible and intended as a tribute to women, and especially to Társila Fernández, who has been running the winery for 50 years.

The labels, which also sport a very youthful and original look, have been designed by Raquel, Társila’s granddaughter, the latest generation of the family to join the winery.

Inspired by Matisse, in a collage style, they depict women sitting astride animals that can be found on the estate and symbolizing the forces of nature, in the case of this wine, the air. Társila Amazona Aire is a pale pink rosé wine made from the Bordeaux grape variety, Petit Verdot.

The nose is very aromatic and floral with delectable aromas of strawberry and cherry candy. The attack is fresh and the wine shows a more delicate character over the palate, which makes it very attractive and easy to drink. This is an ideal wine for the summer, with food, without food, glass by glass, sip by sip…

La gamma de vinos Amazona fue presentada el pasado mes de marzo, coincidiendo con el Día de la Mujer. Es una nueva línea de vinos más moderna, actual, fresca, desenfadada y muy asequible que pretende ser un homenaje a las mujeres, pero especialmente a Társila Fernández, quien dirige la bodega desde hace cincuenta años.

Las etiquetas, también con un aire muy juvenil y original, han sido diseñadas por Raquel, la nieta de Társila, la última generación familiar en llegar a la bodega. Inspiradas por Matisse, al estilo collage, son mujeres encima de animales que se encuentran presentes en la finca, y simbolizando las fuerzas de la naturaleza, en este caso, el aire. Társila Amazona Aire es un vino rosado elaborado con la variedad bordelesa Petit Verdot.

De color rosado pálido, en nariz es muy aromático, muy floral, y muy goloso. Recuerda a las golosinas de fresa y de cereza. La entrada en boca es fresca, y en su paso el vino desprende una golosidad más leve, pero sin perderla, que lo hace muy fácil y atractivo. Un vino ideal para tomar en verano, con o sin comida, copa a copa, sorbo a sorbo, de las botellas que se terminan.

VINOS ROSADOS LALOMBA 2018 · BODEGAS RAMÓN BILBAO D.O.Ca. Rioja / Haro - La Rioja - Spain / www. bodegasramonbilbao.es / P.V.P.: 21,84€ / 90% Garnacha, 10% Viura

This is the third vintage of this Provençal style rose wine made from Garnacha with 10% Viura and named after the vineyard.

The must, produced from grapes which were harvested and sorted by hand, is transferred into concrete tank in a reductive environment and is fermented in contact with its fine lees for 4 months. Bright pink salmon hue. Very subtle and delicate fruity citrus aromas that combine with the floral aromas of red roses. The palate is fresh and creamy with well-balanced acidity and hints of flowers and fruit.

The finish is long, intense and well structured. This wine has fluidity, aromas, and a real connection with the soil and the terroir. It is crisp, crunchy and zippy with a lovely mouthfeel.

It will be perfect with an oven-baked oily fish and pair well with all kinds of appetizers and tapas.

This kind of wine, with its very elegant packaging, has become a favourite on the terraces in the summer. So, we really should make the most of this availability and popularity.

Surprising to see it in the Magnum format.

Tercera cosecha de este vino rosado de estilo provenzal, que lleva el nombre del viñedo. Elaborado a partir de garnacha con un 10% de viura.

Después de una vendimia manual y seleccionada, el mosto se trasiega en ambiente reductivo y fermenta en depósitos de hormigón y se mantiene durante cuatro meses en contacto con sus lías finas. Color rosa salmón brillante. Aroma afrutado cítrico, muy sutil y delicado, que combina con los aromas florales de rosas rojas. En boca es fresco, de acidez equilibrada, con el leve recuerdo floral y afrutado, y cremoso en su paso por boca. El recuerdo en boca es largo e intenso, y bien estructurado. La fluidez, los aromas, la conexión con el sol y con el terruño, chispeante, crujiente y ácido, de tacto amable.

Es el acompañante perfecto para pescados azules, cocinados al horno, y para todo tipo de aperitivos y tapas.

Muy elegante en su presentación, este tipo de vino se ha convertido en la bebida de moda de las terrazas durante el verano. Hay que aprovechar el tirón de ventas que dan en esta época del año, y el éxito del que gozan esta tipología de vinos. Sorprendente en formato Magnum.

RED WINES

ELS "PÁJAROS" 2016 · CELLER DE CAPÇANES

D.O. Montsant / Capçanes, Tarragona - Spain / www. cellercapcanes.com / P.V.P.: 37,50€ / 100% Cariñena

This is a monovarietal red wine made from old Samsó (Cariñena) vines, some up to 110 years old, growing in limestone, clay and Licorella slate soils. Celler Capçanes has been doing a very good job of differentiating its distinctive wines for some time now. They seek to understand and draw out the very best of each new harvest to create quality wines, which are as consistent as possible. In other words, they strive to interpret the harvest and translate it into the best possible wine. Due to the reductive nature of the grape variety, this wine needs to be properly decanted before drinking.

The very intense, bright cherry red hue is in contrast to the garnet rim that already informs us of its ageing. This ageing has various phases but finishes with the wine going into new 300-litre French oak barrels for 12 months. The aromas on entry are timid, but gradually vegetal notes, earthy aromas, and even some metallic overtones, start to emerge.

The palate is more appetizing and attractive, a play of spice and toasted notes. Over the palate, the wine shows weight, structure, volume, meatiness and very pronounced tannins marked by the grape variety and the oak. The finish is long and of great persistence. You’ll have to be quick to get your hands on a bottle of this wine and then hang on to it because the total production is limited to only 1,800 bottles.

Un tinto monovarietal de samsó (cariñena) procedente de viñedos viejos de hasta 110 años, en suelos de caliza, arcilla y licorella. Desde hace algún tiempo, en Celler Capçanes hay un buen trabajo en la línea de la diferenciación y la singularidad de sus vinos. En cada nueva cosecha intentan interpretar y extraer lo mejor de cada una de ellas creando vinos de calidad, lo más regulares posible. Un trabajo de interpretación de la cosecha, y de traducción hacia la elaboración del mejor vino posible. Es un vino que necesita de una buena decantación antes de su consumo, debido al carácter reductivo de la variedad.

El color cereza picota muy intenso y brillante, contrasta sobre un ribete granate que ya nos informa de su crianza, una crianza que pasa por diferentes etapas y termina en barricas nuevas de roble francés de 300 litros durante doce meses. Los aromas en la entrada se muestran tímidos, pero poco a poco va dejando paso a las notas vegetales, a los aromas terrosos e incluso alguna nota metálica.

En boca se muestra más goloso y atractivo, jugando entre las especias y los tostados. En su paso va mostrando peso, estructura, volumen, carnosidad, y una tanicidad muy presente marcada por la variedad y la madera. El final de boca es largo, de gran persistencia. Hay que darse prisa para encontrar una de estas botellas y guardarla, pues la producción limitada total es de solo 1.800 botellas.

VINOS TINTOS ORBUS 2015 · ALTA ALELLA D.O. Alella / Alella - Barcelona - Spain / www.altaalella. wine / P.V.P.: 29,00€ / 100% Syrah

In the Pujol-Busquets family winery, the values of commitment and quality have long been established: harvesting by hand, selecting the grapes, checking of maturity, certified organic production, conservation of a balanced biodiversity and ecosystem, and ancestral growing techniques.

These result in transparent wines that express their characteristic soil and unique landscape and are a true reflection of the vintage. Very intense, ripe cherry red hue with a garnet rim. The nose reveals aromas of violets, very typical of the Syrah variety, along with ripe fruit and some balsamic and spice notes. On the palate, the character is more rustic than easy-drinking, although in a fairly modern style. There is nice acidity and noticeable tannin with an almost chewy fruit, good length and a long-lingering finish.

This red wine, a Syrah monovarietal with 14 months’ ageing in French oak, is only made in cooler vintages as the aim is to produce a continental wine from a Mediterranean grape and enclave, QUITE A CHALLENGE!

En la bodega familiar de Pujol-Busquets, los valores de compromiso y de calidad se instauraron hace tiempo.

Vendimias manuales, uvas seleccionadas, rigurosos controles de maduración, producción ecológica certificada, conservación de una biodiversidad y ecosistema equilibrados, y técnicas ancestrales de agricultura, con el objetivo de elaborar vinos transparentes, que hablen de su característico suelo y paisaje único, y que sean reflejo de la añada. De color rojo cereza madura, ribete granate y capa alta. En nariz destacan los aromas de violetas, muy propios de la variedad syrah, junto con los frutales maduros, alguna nota balsámica y los especiados. En boca, a falta de golosidad, se muestra rústico, aunque de corte más bien moderno. Buena acidez y taninos presentes, con una fruta que casi se puede masticar. Largo postgusto, final persistente.

MAS DE LA ROSA 2014

CELLER VALL LLACH This is a red wine made with grapes from the “paraje” known as Mas de la Rosa. This is part of a classification system that is very common in certain wine regions, including Burgundy, and which is gradually being adopted in Spain. The Priorat D.O. is the first Catalan region to be working with this classification system, which associates the wines with their vineyard of origin.

Mas de la Rosa is one of the first estates in Porrera to have its winemaking tradition documented and it is currently considered to be one of the finest “parajes” in the Priorat DOQ. Two wines from this estate are already on the market, the other is owned

by Torres.

Vall-Llach knows that this is its flagship wine, the most exclusive wine from the winery. A jewel in the crown that, in this 2016 vintage, is made entirely from Cariñena grapes from centenary vines, planted in 1900 on a vertigo-inducing slope with an almost 80% gradient.

Once upon a time, there was a farmhouse in the vineyards where the wine used to be fermented in concrete tanks and then taken to the village in goat skins. Today up to 15 micro-vinifications are carried out, with less than 2,000 bottles produced.

Vino tinto elaborado con las uvas del paraje llamado así, Mas de la Rosa. Un sistema de clasificación muy habitual en algunas zonas vitivinícolas como la Borgoña, y que aquí va calando poco a poco. El consejo regulador del Priorat es la primera denominación de origen catalana que ya trabaja con esta clasificación, de identificación de los vinos con su viñedo origen.

Mas de la Rosa es de las primeras fincas de Porrera que hay documentadas de tradición vinícola y considerada actualmente como uno de los mejores parajes de la DOQ Priorat. De esta finca salen ya dos vinos al mercado, el otro es propiedad de la bodega Torres.

Vall-Llach sabe que este es su vino insignia, el vino más exclusivo de la bodega. Una joya de la corona que, en esta cosecha 2016, es solo uva de cariñena procedente de cepas centenarias, plantadas en 1900, en una pendiente que da vértigo, con casi un 80% de inclinación.

Antiguamente había una masía en el mismo viñedo donde se fermentaba el vino en tanques de cemento y luego se llevaba al pueblo en pellejos de cabra. Hoy se llevan a cabo hasta quince microvinificaciones, no llegando a las 2.000 botellas.

This wine seems mature due to the grape varieties used, as well as the soil and the climate, yet it preserves a great freshness and verticality that make it magical. Violetlike floral notes appear and countless spicy and herby aromas. On the palate, we find smoky notes, sweet spices such as clove and cinnamon and, of course, the minerality of the graphite. This is a classic style wine that has a seductive elegance about it. The tannin is wrapped in the soft ripe fruit that caresses the palate, rendering it velvety and juicy thanks to its lovely glycerin and superb balance. Both the alcohol (15.20% vol) and the oak (new 225 and 300-litre barrels made of fine grain French oak with a light to medium toast, for about 16 months) are well integrated. A long journey for a wine that was bottled in May 2018.

Es un vino que parece maduro por su tipología de variedades, suelo y clima, pero mantiene un gran frescor y verticalidad que lo hace mágico. Aparecen notas florales como la violeta y muchos recuerdos especiados y de hierbas aromáticas. En boca destacan los ahumados, las especies dulces como el clavo y la canela, y por supuesto la mineralidad del grafito. Es de estilo clásico, pero con una elegancia que enamora. La tanicidad está envuelta en la golosidad de la fruta madura que acaricia la boca, dejándola aterciopelada y jugosa, por su buena glicerina y un fantástico equilibrio. Tanto el alcohol (15,20%vol) como la madera, barricas nuevas de 225 y 300 litros de roble francés de grano fino y con tostado ligero y mediano durante unos 16 meses, se encuentran bien integrados. Un largo recorrido para un vino que se embotelló en mayo del 2018.

Currently, it is considered to be one of the best Spanish grape varieties. And this is amply demonstrated by this Bierzo Alto winery in San Román de Bembibre, and specifically by this wine, made from Mencía vines of over 60 years of age growing in gravel and slate soils.

Bright, very intense cherry red hue. Very complex aromas, ranging from ripe wild red and black fruit to toasted, smoky and cocoa notes. La mencía ya no es la variedad delicada, que daba vinos ligeros y poco alcohólicos de hace algunos años. Actualmente es considerada una de las mejores variedades españolas. Y así lo demuestra esta bodega del Bierzo Alto, en San Román de Bembibre, y concretamente este vino, elaborado con cepas de Mencía de más de 60 años, sobre suelos de grava y pizarra.

De intenso color rojo cereza, de capa alta y brillante. Muy complejo en aromas, desde la fruta roja madura y negra de bosque, hasta las notas especiadas, el cacao y los ahumados.

En la entrada de boca es golosa, de una considerable elegancia, con notas lácticas, muy redondo y de gran perfección.

El recuerdo del vino en boca es persistente e intenso, con un final ligeramente amargo.

Sin duda acompaña todo tipo de carnes, y cocinadas bajo todas las modalidades, brasa, grill, guisada, asada, ahumada, al horno, adobada… Considerado uno de los vinos españoles de mejor relación calidad-precio.

VINOS TINTOS ALCUBILLA DE LA AVELLANEDA 2015 LEGARIS D.O. Ribera de Duero / Alcubilla de Avellaneda, Soria Spain / www.legaris.com / P.V.P.: 32,00€ / 100% Tinto fino

From a small vineyard lying at over 900 metres altitude, planted in clay soils 20 years ago and located in Alcubilla de Avellaneda (Soria). Only 2,000 litres are produced of this fine red wine, fermented spontaneously with native yeasts.

This is a new direction for the Legaris winery seeking to craft unique and expressive wines. After 20 months’ ageing in only five 225-litre French oak barrels and one of 500 litres, the wine spent two months in a concrete egg tank before being bottled in September 2017. Intense and bright, cherry red hue with a garnet rim. It is shy, timid even, on the first nose which is somewhat reduced, so the wine is best decanted. As it aerates and opens up in the glass, it shows itself to be increasingly liquor-like, with aromas of candied cherries and very ripe fruit. The tannin and oak are evident, leaving a drying sensation on the palate, and the wine is long and persistent.

It gives us the impression of being a first-timer, that it is still learning, and this spirit of learning is in tune with the land in which it was born. And with that connection, the wine will overcome and only grow greater, because it is a wine that empathises and adapts. The 2015 was an excellent vintage in Ribera del Duero, so the wine should have good ageing potential.

A partir de un pequeño viñedo ubicado en Alcubilla de Avellaneda (Soria), plantado hace veinte años sobre suelo arcilloso a más de 900 metros de altitud, se elaboran solo 2.000 litros de este vino de tinto fino fermentado con levaduras autóctonas, de forma espontánea.

Una nueva línea de trabajo que ha empezado a desarrollar la bodega Legaris, buscando vinos singulares y expresivos.

Después de una crianza de 20 meses en solo 5 barricas nuevas de roble francés de 225 litros y una de 500 litros, y antes de su embotellado en septiembre de 2017, estuvo dos meses en depósito de hormigón de huevo. De color rojo picota, intenso y brillante, y ribete granate. En el primer golpe de nariz es tímido, incluso algo reducido, por lo que es necesario decantar. A medida que se abre en la copa y se airea, se va mostrando licoroso, recordando las cerezas confitadas y la fruta muy madura. El tanino y la madera están presentes, dejando la sensación secante en boca, largo y persistente.

Da la sensación de ser un vino primerizo, que está aprendiendo, y ese espíritu de aprendizaje va en sintonía con la tierra que lo ve nacer. Y con ese vínculo el vino ganará y se hará mayor, porque es un vino que empatiza y que se adapta.

Siendo la 2015 una añada excelente en Ribera del Duero, se presagia un buen potencial de guarda.

CUESTA DE LAS LIEBRES 2014

Only in good vintages will you enjoy Cuesta de las Liebres, Pago de Carraovejas’ most precious wine and, in 2014, Nature allowed it. This wine is a faithful reflection of the seasons, it is a true reflection of life, of adversity and daring, of successes and mistakes, and in this case, it is also a blessing.

The wine is crafted from Tinto Fino grapes from Peñafiel, harvested on a steep slope situated at 800 metres altitude where the vines are vertical bush trained and this is what gives it its distinctive power and personality. At its highest altitude, the vineyard borders the pine forest with several species of plants. Character, energy, authenticity... Nature in her pure state.

The alcoholic and malolactic fermentations were carried out in small wooden vats with native yeasts. The wine was then aged for two years before being bottled using gravity flow, in spring 2017. 7,000 bottles were produced along with a few magnums.

This wine displays a bright, very intense, ruby red hue. The nose is magnificent, ripe black fruit, blackberries, redcurrants, black pepper, cinnamon, nuts and chocolate, along with some toasted and balsamic notes. The palate is appetizing thanks to the expression of ripe, almost candied, fruit with moderate acidity. There are also some sweet notes and mineral overtones against an oaky backdrop. This is a wine that is powerful, concentrated, elegant and very persistent.

It has countless nuances that will continue to enhance its expression. With this wine, you have a good excuse not to hurry a meal because it needs to be savoured and enjoyed with hearty, fatty, winter dishes (although you might also try it with dark chocolate desserts!).

In the countryside, Nature rules and we must honour her and gratefully accept whatever she gives us. This is not about submission, but about simply being able to respect her decisions, and this wine shows how it's done.

La naturaleza decide año tras año si este vino va a salir o no al mercado. Solo de vendimias buenas se puede beber Cuesta de las Liebres, el vino más preciado de Pago de Carraovejas, y la 2014 lo permitió. Es un vino que es fiel reflejo de las estaciones, es fiel reflejo de la vida, es reflejo de las adversidades y de los atrevimientos, de los aciertos y los desaciertos, pero en este caso es una bendición.

Uva de tinto fino de Peñafiel, recogida en ladera de pendiente pronunciada a más de 800 metros de altitud y en vaso vertical, lo que le dota de una fuerza y una personalidad muy especiales. En su máxima altitud, el viñedo limita con el bosque de pinos en el que habitan varias especies. Carácter, energía, autenticidad… la naturaleza en estado puro.

Las fermentaciones alcohólicas y maloláctica se realizaron en pequeñas tinas de madera con levaduras autóctonas para pasar a una crianza durante dos años antes de embotellarse por gravedad, en primavera de 2017, y llegando a alcanzar las 7000 botellas, aparte de alguna más en botella magnum.

Su color, rojo rubí, de capa alta, brillante. En nariz es esplendoroso, fruta negra madura, moras, grosellas, pimienta negra, canela, frutos secos, tostados, chocolate y balsámicos.

En boca es goloso por la expresión de la fruta madura, casi confitada, de moderada acidez.

Notas dulzonas sobre un fondo de madera presente, y notas minerales. Un vino potente, concentrado, elegante y muy persistente.

Un vino muy rico en matices que irá mejorando su expresión. Este es un caso clarísimo de que la prisa es mala en la mesa, es un vino para saborearlo y para acompañar platos contundentes, más bien grasos, y de invierno. Incluso para tomar con postres de chocolate negro.

La naturaleza manda siempre en el campo, y hay que respetarla y aceptar lo que nos da. No se trata de ningún reto, ni de ningún desafío, sino de respetar sus decisiones. Ese es el camino.

Macabeu, Xarel·lo and Parellada from Can Martí, an estate covering 135 ha in Gelida, Alt Penedès, that has belonged to the Torelló family since 1395. The winery’s advanced technology is combined with more traditional practices in the vineyards and in the production process. Torelló Viticultors is a reference winery when it comes to longaged quality sparkling wines.

They adopted the Corpinnat brand, a collective EU trademark with the strictest of quality specifications, a few months ago. Since joining Corpinnat, Torelló has included the date of disgorgement, the month and year, on its back labels to provide the consumer with more detailed information about production. Ageing on the lees has given this sparkling wine a fresh and very vibrant attack that gives way to some delicate flavours of bread and pastries over a backdrop of tangy candied fruit. The perfect symbiosis between the CO2 and the wine endows this sparkler with great balance on the palate that leads to an appetizing, long-lingering finish, exciting the tastebuds which, above all, detect the firm acidity.

Macabeu, xarel·lo y parellada de la finca de Can Martí, una finca que pertenece a la familia Torelló desde 1395 y que ocupa 135 ha en Gelida, Alt Penedès. La tecnología más avanzada de la bodega convive con la práctica más tradicional en el viñedo y durante el proceso de elaboración. Torelló Viticultors es una de las bodegas de referencia cuando se trata de vinos espumosos de calidad de largas crianzas.

Desde hace unos meses, se acogen al sello europeo de Corpinnat, una marca colectiva de la UE que sigue los más estrictos parámetros de calidad. Con la entrada a Corpinnat, Torelló ha incorporado la fecha de degüelle, mes y año, en las contraetiquetas para dar más información al consumidor.

La crianza sobre lías le aporta a este espumoso una elegancia y un cuerpo únicos. Color amarillo dorado pálido, de fina burbuja. En nariz destacan los aromas de la crianza y la fruta madura. En boca tiene una entrada fresca y muy vibrante que deja paso a unos delicados sabores de pan y bollería sobre una fruta ácida confitada. Conca del Riu Anoia / Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, Barcelona - Spain / www.raventos.com / P.V.P.: 21,10€ / 50% Xarel·lo, 19% Parellada, 31% Macabeo De la Finca de Raventós i Blanc is a quality sparkling wine which has had an eye on the international market since its creation. It is made from three grape varieties, Xarel·lo (50%), Macabeu (40%) and Parellada (10%), and has to undergo a long, 3 years’ ageing “sur latte”, otherwise it would not be a fine sparkling wine of traditional quality.

Very bright, pale golden yellow hue with fine bubbles. The nose discloses ripe white fruit, citrus, toasted notes and brioche.

It retains this fruit and very lively acidity on the palate and has a long-lingering, fresh and saline finish, derived from Vinya dels Fòssils’ limestone terrain. This wine, along with the other wines from the winery, is made from the traditional grape varieties, has undergone long ageing, and identifies with the terroir in which its grapes were born.

This wine is exceptional year after year, transcending purity and authenticity. This is a wine that, after resting for some time in the quiet darkness of the cellars, now wants to express itself. This is a wine that appears subtle but which gains in strength and shows itself to be lively. Few producers are able to combine the result of their work and the terroir’s work so well.

This sparkling wine has not only been designed to quench thirst but to quench a thirst for emotions and sensations.

De la Finca de Raventós i Blanc es un espumoso de calidad con la mirada puesta en el mercado internacional desde sus inicios.

Lo conforman tres variedades, xarel·lo (50%), macabeu (40%) y parellada (10%), y una larga crianza de 3 años de botella en rima, de otra forma no se entendería un gran espumoso de calidad tradicional.

De color amarillo dorado pálido, muy brillante, de fina burbuja.

En nariz destaca la fruta blanca madura, los cítricos, notas tostadas y brioche. Y en boca mantiene la fruta y la acidez muy viva, y termina con un largo recuerdo, persistente, fresco, y salino, procedente del terreno calcáreo de la Vinya dels Fòssils.

Este producto, junto con el resto de los productos que se elaboran en la bodega, reivindica las variedades tradicionales, las largas crianzas y la identificación con el terruño en el que nacen sus uvas.

Un vino que año tras año es excepcional, un vino que trasciende la pureza y la autenticidad. Un vino que después del tiempo de silencio y de oscuridad en la bodega se expresa, con ganas.

Un vino que aparenta sutileza pero que retoma fuerza y se expresa vivo. Pocos elaboradores saben conectar tan bien el resultado de su trabajo con el trabajo de la tierra.

Un espumoso que no solo se ha elaborado para saciar la sed, sino que también calma la sed de las emociones y de las sensaciones.

ARS COLLECTA GRAND ROSÉ 2015

A Gran Reserva cava, 36 months old, made from the Pinot Noir and Trepat red varieties and the white Xarel·lo. The Pinot Noir (85%), from the Costers del Segre area, gives us this fine cava’s characteristic elegant notes and ageing potential; the Trepat, the iconic of Conca de Barberà and sourced from there, brings acidity and structure; while the Xarel.lo, from Penedes’ central plain, gives the wine freshness and an aromatic touch.

This wine is a blend of various grape varieties and different areas in order to create complexity and expressiveness. It reveals a salmon pink hue along with fine, delicate and long-lingering bubbles. The nose is very aromatic with notes of cherries and blackberries. On the palate, it is very complex and perfectly balanced giving us a marked sensation of creaminess and aromatic persistence on the finish.

This is a fine, long-aged cava that, once opened, reveals a lovely blend of fruit and acidity. A great cava should be a reflection of its varietals and the area from which it hails and this ARS COLLECTA GRAND ROSÉ is an exclusive blend of different geographical areas, of different climates, of different altitudes and different grape varieties, all carefully selected. It is the result of a job well done and excellent knowledge of the terroir. If cava is seeking to recover its identity and prestige, this is undoubtedly the way to do it.

Un cava Gran Reserva, de 36 meses, elaborado a partir de las variedades tintas pinot noir y trepat, y la blanca xarel·lo. La variedad pinot noir (85%), procedente de la zona de Costers del Segre, le da las características notas elegantes junto con el potencial de envejecimiento que desarrollará este gran cava; el trepat, la variedad icónica de Conca de Barberà y procedente de allí, le aporta la acidez y la estructura; mientras que la xarel.lo, de la plana central del Penedés, le da el toque aromático junto con el frescor.

Un cupaje de diferentes variedades y distintas zonas para obtener un producto de gran complejidad y expresividad. De color rosa salmón, burbuja fina, delicada y persistente. En nariz es muy aromático, destacando las notas de cereza y moras, y en boca se muestra muy complejo y perfectamente equilibrado, con una marcada sensación de cremosidad y de persistencia aromática al final de boca.

Un gran cava, con una larga crianza, que una vez abierto, fruta y acidez viajan íntegras en la botella. Un gran cava debe ser reflejo de la zona de la que procede y de sus variedades, y este ARS COLLECTA GRAND ROSÉ es un coupage exclusivo de diversas zonas geográficas, de diferentes climas, de distintas altitudes y de variedades, todo seleccionado y a partir de un buen trabajo y conocimiento en el campo. Sin duda, este es el camino que hay que seguir para que el cava recupere su identidad y su prestigio.

EVENTS: FAMILY WINE TOURISM IN ALTA ALELLA

FAMILY WINE TOURISM IN

A spot of family wine tourism is a great

way of spending a day, or part of it, in the company of family, friends or acquaintances ... This was the idea put forward by a class at the Col.legi Sant Ignasi in Barcelona. Get to know the winemaking process through a short story starring a grape: "El raĂŻm inquiet" (The restless grape).

This original idea is based on a book, suitable for children, that explains the process that a grape goes through from its birth to the time it becomes wine. After hearing the story, the children sit around a table and answer questions relating to the story they have just heard. They also try the juice from a couple of grape varieties. The older children, meanwhile, taste some of the wines and cavas produced by this family winery located in the Alella area not far from Barcelona.

We have heard that this story has already been used in different wine growing areas, mainly in Catalonia, where the idea was born. The story and its staging is the work of Elisenda Guiu.

What a great way of introducing our children to the world of wine!

ENOTURISMO FAMILIAR EN ALTA ALELLA El Enoturismo familiar es una forma de disfrutar

de una jornada, o una parte de ella, en compañía de la familia, amigos, conocidos,… Este fue el plan propuesto por una clase del Col.legi Sant Ignasi de Barcelona. Ir a conocer el proceso del vino a través de una historia, de un cuento, el protagonizado por una uva, “El raïm inquiet” (La uva inquieta).

Esta original idea parte de un libro en el que se explica, adaptado a los niños, el proceso que pasa una uva desde que nace, crece, y como se convierte en vino. Después de explicar la historia, los niños se sientan alrededor de una mesa y rellenan un cuestionario en el que las preguntas

tienen que ver con todo lo que se les ha explicado, y también acaban probando mosto de un par de variedades de uva. Los mayores, mientras, catan algunos de los vinos y cavas de esta bodega familiar situada en el municipio de Alella (Barcelona).

Que sepamos, esta historia ya se ha podido explicar en diferentes zonas vitivinícolas, principalmente en Catalunya, de donde surgió la idea a través de Elisenda Guiu, principal artífice del cuento y de su puesta en escena.

Una gran idea para introducir a nuestros pequeños en el mundo del vino.

CELEBRATION OF THE 20-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF RAMÓN BILBAO’S ICONIC WINE The Espacio Príncipe de Madrid, in the heart of the Spanish capital, was the venue chosen by the Ramón Bilbao winery (one of the 50 most admired wine brands in the world according to the prestigious magazine, Drinks International) to celebrate the 20 vintages of its iconic wine.

Ramón Bilbao’s customers and consumers from Spain and around the world were invited to the Espacio Príncipe, which was decked out in style for the 3-day celebration.

MIRTO EXPERIENCE : CELEBRACIÓN DE LOS 20 AÑOS DEL VINO ICÓNICO DE RAMÓN BILBAO El Espacio Príncipe de Madrid, en el centro de la

capital de España, fue el lugar elegido por la bodega Ramón Bilbao, una de las 50 marcas de vinos más admiradas del mundo, según la prestigiosa revista Drinks International, para celebrar las 20 añadas del vino icónico de la bodega.

La celebración se prolongó durante tres jornadas, y por el lugar anteriormente citado, engalanado para tal especial ocasión, pasaron periodistas, clientes nacionales e internacionales y consumidores. Nadie se quiso perder el especial evento que contó con un maestro de ceremonias a la altura de las circunstancias: Rodolfo Bastida, director general y enólogo de la bodega riojana. Él es el principal artífice de este extraordinario vino, un vino de autor del que se elaboran 39.000 botellas.

Coincidiendo con este 20 aniversario, se ha modificado la imagen para que tenga una personalidad propia y distinguible entre el resto de vinos. Una botella muy elegante que llama poderosamente la atención.

El vino, elaborado con Tempranillo, es el producto de un trabajo riguroso, respetuoso con el entorno, y que quiere mostrar el carácter e identidad de la tierra de la que nace. Un lujo de vino.

"All the Godello sold around the world has its

origin in Valdeorras", and with this statement, Jorge L. Mazaira Pérez, technical director of the Valdeorras D.O. for the last 23 years, started the Godello tasting.

The small estates that make up the Valdeorras vineyards are perfectly integrated within the area’s Mediterranean type vegetation: pine trees, chestnut trees, heather, cherry and fig trees, accompanying the main aromatic herbs of dill, rosemary and mint, as well as the widespread “xesta” or broom (Cytisus scoparius), a lovely shrub whose flowers, along with the gorse flower, colour the Galician mountains yellow.

This spectacular landscape is arranged around several rivers, at the bottom of the valley of the Sil, its main tributary, the Bibei and the Galir, in the heart of Éntoma. This territory runs through 8 towns and stretches over 35 km from end to end.

The wines’ personality is derived from their slopes and various soils of granite and slate, with areas of pebbles and white or red sand, depending on the area.

We recommend you visit the "fornos", the ovens that the residents of poorer neighbourhoods used to share, which have now been restored and represent the recent history of their villages. If you follow the "route of the ovens", you can not only get to know the history of their villages, but also appreciate the area’s very varied countryside, with intoxicating yellow and green hues in the springtime, the red dots of wild poppies later in the year, and the aromas given off by the fragrant wild herbs.

At the Forno de Viduevo, the first tasting of Godello white wines awaited us, from the fresh, young and vibrant whites of the year to Godellos with two years’ ageing in bottle, demonstrating structure and ageing capacity, and the Godellos on the lees, that showed greater weight and volume on the palate, and which were great served with the oven-baked bread and the lacón (dried ham from Galicia).

At the Forno dos Hortos, it was the turn of the Mencías. Young Mencías with aromas of blackberry and fresh liquorice, and barrel-aged Mencías with notes of black fruit compote, which pair perfectly with the local bread and chorizo.

And at the Forno de Ouleiro, the final tasting was Garnacha Tintorera, Brancellao and Souson red wines. Fresh, rustic reds, local varieties that paired nicely with the roasted kid meat.

The Godello is a noble variety in Valdeorras, very much associated with the area. It makes an expressive wine with a fresh sensation on the palate and a bitter finish. Due to the hot summer nights in Valdeorras, where temperatures can reach 27°C, the Godello can boast of the fact that it doesn’t have any malic acid, with only citrus and tartaric acids present in the grapes.

“Toda la godello que se vende en el mundo tiene su origen en Valdeorras”, con esta frase del

Director Técnico del consejo regulador de Valdeorras, Jorge L. Mazaira Pérez, que lleva 23 años en el cargo, empezó la cata de godellos.

Las pequeñas fincas que conforman los viñedos de Valdeorras se integran perfectamente en la vegetación de estilo mediterráneo de la zona: pinos, castaños, brezos, cerezos, higueras, acompañando las aromáticas eneldo, romero y hierbabuena en su mayoría, además de la extendida xesta o retama (Cytisus scoparius), un hermoso arbusto cuyas flores, junto a la flor del tojo, colorean de amarillo los montes gallegos.

Un paisaje espectacular que se dibuja entorno a varios ríos, en el fondo del Valle del Sil, su principal afluente, el Bibei, y el Galir, en el corazón de Éntoma.

Un territorio que pasa por 8 pueblos y tiene un recorrido de 35 km de punta a punta.

Sus pendientes y distintos suelos es lo que les aportan personalidad a sus vinos, desde el granito a la pizarra, pasando por el canto rodado y los terrenos arenosos más blanquinosos o más rojizos, dependiendo de la zona.

Es muy recomendable hacer la visita de los “fornos”, los hornos que compartían las gentes de los barrios con menos recursos, hoy restaurados y símbolo de la historia reciente de sus pueblos. Siguiendo la “ruta de los hornos”, no sólo se puede conocer la historia de sus pueblos, sino también sirve para apreciar la rica naturaleza de la zona, que embriaga por sus colores amarillos y verdes (época de primavera), algún punto rojizo de las amapolas que crecen de forma aleatoria, y por los aromas que desprenden las hierbas aromáticas silvestres.

En el Forno de Viduevo nos esperaba la cata de los vinos blancos de Godello, desde blancos del año frescos, jóvenes y vibrantes, hasta godellos con dos años de envejecimiento en botella, demostrando estructura y capacidad de envejecimiento, y los godellos con lías, que aportan más peso y volumen en boca, y que demostraron ser grandes compañeros de maridaje con el pan de horno y el lacón.

En el Forno dos Hortos las mencías tenían su escenario. Mencías jóvenes con recuerdos a mora, regaliz fresco, y mencías con barrica, con recuerdos a compota de fruta negra que harmonizan a la perfección con chorizo y pan elaborado en la zona.

Y en el Forno de Ouleiro, la degustación final, tintos de Garnacha Tintorera, de Brancellao y de Souson.

Tintos frescos, rústicos y de variedades de la zona que acompañaron la carne de cabrito cocinada al horno.

La godello es en Valdeorras una variedad noble, muy identificativa de la zona, expresiva, con sensación fresca en boca y final amargo. Que en las noches de verano en Valdeorras se llegue a los 27 grados de temperatura, permite a las godello presumir de no tener málico, siendo el cítrico y el tartárico los únicos ácidos presentes en las uvas.

According to José Luis García Pando, president of the Valdeorras D.O., "the greatest differentiation of varietals in Valdeorras is provided by the soils".

Within the natural border, where Ribeira Sacra is separated from Valdeorras by the Bibei river, the soil that influences the personality of the grapes grown in the Falcoeira vineyards is granite. These vineyards are part of the recovery project being conducted by Laderas do Sil from the Compañía de Vinos de Telmo Rodríguez along with O Diviso and As Caborcas, thus recovering one of the winegrowing areas that is most appreciated by the local wine growers. The Falcoeira estate, in Santa Cruz, sits at about 500 metres altitude, on narrow and vertiginous south-facing terraces. Different varieties are planted here - Mencía, Brancellao, Sousón, Garnacha along with a few white varietals.

As Caborcas, also in Santa Cruz, has 2.5 hectares of vineyards sloping down towards the Bibei River, planted in very poor, shallow granite soil. The third estate we visited, included in the same recovery project, was O Diviso. The same features as its neighbours: high altitude, poor granite soils, vertiginous hillsides, sloping down towards the Bibei river, a unique landscape.

The vineyards planted in slate in the Galir River area, owned by Virxe de Galir (now Cvne) and Roandi, demonstrate the great potential of the Valdeorras soils.

Here, where the Xesta grows and occupies the middle of the vineyards, irrigation helps the younger vines to take root.

According to Araceli Fernández, the daughter of Horacio Fernández Presas, one of those who is working the hardest to obtain recognition of the Godello from Valdeorras, and manager of the Godeval winery, "We had to change much of the wine growers’ thinking in order to build the reputation that the Godello enjoys today".

“Revival”, besides being an association that was created to recover and promote the native minority varietals of Valdeorras, and specifically the Godello in the 70s, is also a wine named in tribute to this recovery project.

"Revival is not just an oenological project, there is also social work involved for a whole generation that served to travel and learn that you can live from wine", explains Araceli. The winery, located in O Barco de Valdeorras, markets 3 Godello wine brands: Godeval, a young wine; Godeval Cepas Vellas (a Godello on the lees); and Godeval Revival, with very small production.

Para el presidente de la DO Valdeorras, José Luis García Pando, "la mayor diferenciación de las variedades en Valdeorras la aportan los suelos". En el límite natural donde se separa Ribeira Sacra de Valdeorras por el río Bibei, el granito es el tipo de suelo que marca la personalidad de las uvas de la viña Falcoeira. Una viña que forma parte del proyecto de recuperación de Laderas do Sil de la Compañía de Vinos de Telmo Rodríguez, junto con O Diviso y As Caborcas, recuperando así uno de los viñedos más apreciados por los viticultores locales. La finca de Falcoeira, en Santa Cruz, se encuentra a unos 500 metros de altitud, en terrazas estrechas y vertiginosas orientadas al sur.

Se pueden encontrar distintas variedades plantadas, desde Mencía, brancellao o sousón, hasta garnacha, y alguna variedad blanca.

As Caborcas, también en Santa Cruz, son dos hectáreas y medio de viñedo en pendiente sobre el río Bibei, sobre suelos muy pobres y poco profundos, de granito. Y la tercera finca que visitamos, dentro del mismo proyecto de recuperación, O Diviso. Las mismas características que sus fincas vecinas, alta altitud, suelos pobres, de granito, con pendientes de vértigo, inclinadas sobre el río Bibei, y con un entorno paisajístico único.

Los viñedos de pizarra de la zona del río Galir, propiedad de Virxe de Galir (ahora de Cvne) y de Roandi, demuestra el gran potencial de los suelos de Valdeorras. Con la xesta creciendo y haciéndose su lugar en medio de los viñedos, el riego ayuda a que las raíces de las cepas más jóvenes puedan ir arraigándose.

Araceli Fernández, hija de don Horacio Fernández Presas, una de las personas que más trabajó para el reconocimiento de la godello en Valdeorras, y gerente de la bodega Godeval, comenta que "hizo falta cambiar muchas cosas en la mente de los viticultores para llegar a la buena reputación de la que hoy goza la godello".

Revival, además de ser una asociación que nació para recuperar y dar empuje a las variedades minoritarias autóctonas de Valdeorras, y concretamente para dar empuje a la Godello en los años 70, es también el nombre de un vino en homenaje a este proyecto de recuperación. "Revival no es solo un proyecto enológico, hay también una labor social a toda una generación que sirvió para poder viajar y aprender que se puede vivir del vino", explica Araceli. La bodega, situada en O Barco de Valdeorras, cuenta con 3 marcas de godello: Godeval, un vino joven; Godeval Cepas Vellas, un godello sobre lías; y Godeval Revival, que cuenta con una producción limitada.

by British singer-songwriter Freya Ridings, who had a platinum disc in 2018. The evening ended with a spectacular firework display that lit up the château and Moet & Chandon’s adjoining vineyards.

The exaltation of the earth The Priorat D.O.Q. recently unveiled its new wine classifications, backed up by complete traceability and ensuring that the origin of the wines is respected.

In order to determine quality and prices, the D.O.Q. has carried out a precise, almost microscopic, analysis of its wine growing area. The new classifications are similar to those commonly used in Burgundy.

IN THE NAME OF THE PRIORAT: THE EXALTATION OF THE EARTH

Currently, a quarter of the land covered by the Priorat D.O.Q. sits on hillsides with almost 90-degree slopes. There are around 2,000 hectares of vines in total, shared among 550 owners/winegrowers.

For seven centuries, this lovely, magical and rugged area in the province of Tarragona was governed by the Carthusian monks, who arrived from neighbouring France at the turn of the 12th century and decided to stay. But even before the advent of the monks, these magical mountains already bore a spiritual halo as they had long been the home to hermits who preferred to live there cut off from the rest of humanity (whenever I go to Priorat, I get this feeling of vertigo, due to the slopes, and of a powerful mystical energy). This is no doubt why the Carthusian monks chose this area in which to build a great monastery, that of Scala Dei, which was the region’s "centre of trade and power" for centuries. And, of course, they planted vineyards (many more than the 2,000 hectares that currently exist today), they produced wine,.... The Prior of the monastery had the authority to deliver justice and acted as a kind of mayor with command over all the local villages, which are basically the same as those in the Priorat D.O.Q. area today.

So, this is how things were up to the year 1835 when, thanks to the ecclesiastical confiscations of Mendizabal, the monks were forced to leave, abandoning their cells, cloisters, church, inn, gardens and libraries... the great Charterhouse remained in private hands who could not, or did not want to, prevent this "city" from becoming a glorious ruin with virtually nothing left standing.

Fortunately, a vast and costly restoration project was initiated a few years ago and today the site is able to host events such as "Els noms de la terra” (the names of the land) at which the Priorat D.O.Q. presented its new classifications, along with many of its wines, to importers and journalists from over 20 countries.

Actualmente, la cuarta parte del terreno que

ampara la D.O.Q Priorat, está situado en pendiente, en cuestas que llegan a tener casi 90 grados de inclinación.

Hay unas 2.000 hectáreas en total de viñedo que se reparten entre 550 propietarios/viticultores.

Esta mágica, abrupta y hermosa zona de la provincia de Tarragona estuvo durante 7 siglos dominada por los monjes cartujos, que allí se asentaron tras llegar de la vecina Francia a principios del siglo XII. Antes de su llegada, estas montañas mágicas ya tenían un halo espiritual de enorme calado pues era lugar preferido por muchos eremitas que aquí vivían aislados del mundo (Siempre que voy a Priorato me envuelve una sensación de vértigo –por las pendientes- y de una poderosa y extraña energía mística). Ello fue decisivo a la hora de que los monjes cartujos eligieran este lugar y empezaran a construir un gran monasterio, el de Scala Dei, que fue el “centro de negocio y poder” durante muchos siglos de toda la comarca. Y por supuesto también cultivaban viñedos - mucho más que esas 2.000 ha que actualmente existen-, elaboraban vino, construyeron molinos, poblaron los terrenos… El prior del monasterio podía ejercer justicia y era como una especie de alcalde que tenía mando en todos los pueblos que conformaban la comarca, que son básicamente los mismos que perteneces hoy a la D.O. Ca. Priorat.

Así las cosas hasta el año 1835.

Debido a la desamortización de Mendizábal los monjes tuvieron que marcharse abandonando celdas, claustros, iglesia, hospedería, huertas, bibliotecas… La gran cartuja quedó en manos privadas que no pudieron – o no quisieronevitar que aquella “city” se convirtiera en una gloriosa ruina donde no quedó nada en pie. Afortunadamente hace años que se comenzó una vasta y costosa labor de restauración que permite celebrar actos como el llamado “Los nombres de la tierra” que organizado por el C.R.D.O.Qu. Priorat ha servido para presentar ante la prensa e importadores de más de 20 países gran parte de sus vinos y sus novedosas clasificaciones.

This now brings us to “Els noms de la terra”. 17 years ago, the Priorat D.O.Q. began to identify and define, inch by inch, and step by step, its specific sites, vineyards, villages and plots. Each of the region’s rock types (Devonian and Carboniferous slates, mottled phyllite, quartzite, hornfels, porphyry, puddingstone, breccia, alluvium, sand, sandstone etc.) were classified and documented... so that, on a rainy day last spring, they were able to present themselves in full glory.

1.- D.O.Q. Priorat regional wine that reflects the generic personality of the D.O.Q. 2.- Vi de Vila (village wine) that expresses the accepted typicity of a specific village area. There are currently 45 of these village wines.

3.- Vi de Paratge (similar to a ‘lieu dit’ or ‘climat’ in Burgundy). This is the most novel classification because it hones in on the terroir aspect. There are now 459 carefully delimited ‘Paratges’ or specific sites.

4.- Vinya Classificada (a sort of premier cru). Grapes that come from a single vineyard that deserve to be bottled separately.

Hace 17 años el C.R.D.O.Qu. Priorat comenzó a definir palmo a palmo, y paso a paso, los parajes, viñedos, pueblos, parcelas. Cada una de las rocas que forman el terreno (pizarras devónicas y carboníferas, filitas moteadas, gres, cuarcita, corneana, pórfido, pudinga, brecha., aluvión, areniscas, gres, …) fueron clasificadas y documentadas… para que un día lluvioso de la pasada primavera pudieran presentarse con todos los honores.

1.- D.O.Q. Priorat que refleja la personalidad vinícola genérica.

2.- Vi de Vila (vino de pueblo) que expresa la consabida tipicidad de un municipio concreto (hoy son 45): 3.-Vi de Paratge (vino de paraje). Es la clasificación más novedosa porque agudiza más el ángulo climatológico.

Existen 459 parajes perfectamente delimitados.

4.- Vinya Classificada (Viña clasificada). Uvas que proceden de un viñedo único que merecen ser embotelladas aparte.

5.- Gran Vinya Classificada (Gran viña clasificada) que es lo más de lo más. La cúspide de la pirámide. Vinos donde se suman la calidad, la viticultura, la historia…

IN THE NAME OF THE PRIORAT: THE EXALTATION OF THE EARTH

In addition, expressions on the label, such as Vinyes Velles (Old Vines) for vines that are over 75 years old or planted before 1945, have also been identified, specified and documented. A vineyard can use these expressions independently, in addition to its paratge, vila, etc. classification, and the maximum yield per hectare is also regulated in all of the categories (from 6,000 kg/ha down to half that).

Likewise, and as is customary in regions such as Burgundy, the name of a specific site may appear on the label, acting in this way not unlike a brand. This is the case, for example, with the new wine recently released by the Torres family, the most exclusive from within its extended family. Only 2,050 bottles, derived entirely from an 80-year-old vineyard covering 1.9 ha, in a ‘Paratge’ known as Mas de la Rosa. The label reads: Mas de la Rosa 2016. Vinyes Velles. Porrera. Priorat D.O.Q. Thanks to the tastings of a large number of Priorat D.O.Q. wines conducted by the winemakers in the now rehabilitated facilities of the famous Scala Dei Charterhouse, and to the exclusive tours of the vineyards and wineries hosted by the owners themselves, the guests at this event were able to immerse themselves in this mythical region.

Además también se han definido y concretado expresiones en la etiqueta como Vinyes Velles (Viejas Viñas) que tienen que tener más de 75 años o haber sido plantadas antes de 1945. Todo ello documentado. Puede un viñedo ser clasificado como tal independientemente, al margen de la clasificación de paratge, vila… y también se regula la máxima cantidad de kilos por hectárea en todas las categorías. (desde 6.000 kg/ha hasta la mitad).

Asimismo, y como es costumbre en Borgoña, el nombre de un paraje puede figurar en la etiqueta, destacando a modo de marca. Es el caso, por ejemplo, del nuevo vino que ha sacado al mercado recientemente la familia Torres, el más exclusivo de su amplia familia. Sólo 2.050 botellas, sólo de un viñedo con 80 años que ocupa 1,9 ha, en un paraje llamado Mas de la Rosa. En la etiqueta se lee Mas de la Rosa 2016. Porrera. Vinyes Velles. D.O.Qu.Priorat.

Las sesiones de cata de muchos de los vinos de la D.O.Qu.Priorat que tuvieron lugar en las instalaciones ya rehabilitadas de la famosa cartuja Scala Dei, de la mano de sus propios elaboradores, y la posibilidad de poder visitar los viñedos y bodegas con los propietarios y de manera muy exclusiva, fueron grandes ideas que permitieron a los asistentes a este encuentro, adentrarse aún más en esta mágica zona.
