The world of wine is broad, it is universal and it is social... and for this reason it can be approached through a number of different themes and angles. This is what we attempt to do in our humble publication – present views of the wine world through many different prisms.

El mundo del vino es amplio, es universal, es social... y es por ello que se puede abarcar desde diferentes temáticas y perspectivas. Es lo que normalmente procuramos hacer desde esta humilde publicación, enfocar el mundo del vino desde los diferentes prismas que tiene.

As our loyal readers know, Selectus Wines has a number of regular features, including “the winery”, articles from one or both of our contributing Masters of Wine (Pedro Ballesteros and/or Christy Canterbury), our tasting notes, written in their own inimitable style (and without scores), and the fascinating stories behind the venerable old wine companies, written by Paz Ivison, drawing on her extensive knowledge and rich vocabulary. But from time to time, we come up with some other wine-related themes that we feel will be of interest to our readers. So, from this issue onwards, we are introducing a new regular feature: wine shops. We will be taking you on a tour of a selection of wine shops, whose unique character makes them among the world’s finest, appealing to both the wine trade and the general wine drinking public.

Como nuestros asiduos lectores ya habrán ido comprobando, el esquema de nuestra publicación tiene varios apartados fijos, como pueden ser la bodega, los artículos de uno o ambos de los master of Wine que colaboran con nosotros (Pedro Ballesteros y/o Christy Canterbury), las notas de cata con estilo propio y sin puntuaciones, o las bodegas históricas que Paz Ivison, con su rico vocabulario y conocimientos nos describe en cada número. Pero de tanto en tanto, aparecen nuevas ideas y nuevos conceptos sobre los que queremos hablar. Y a partir de esta edición, incorporamos un nuevo apartado que también irá apareciendo en la revista: las tiendas de vinos. Haremos un recorrido por una selección de tiendas de vinos, a nivel mundial, que por sus características se han ganado un lugar entre las mejores, tanto para el público como para los profesionales.

Santorini, as well as being a tourist island with

fabulous weather and paradisiacal landscapes, is also one of the most interesting areas in the world when it comes to wine...

It has a landscape where time seems to stand still, like an emptied hourglass, after the last grain of sand has slipped to the bottom. It has a countryside of striking beauty, which includes the vines pruned according to the “Stefani” technique, their canes interwoven to create a kind of basket, inside which the grape clusters grow, sheltered from the hot winds. The land is comprised of very poor volcanic soils, in which each plant has to dig down deep in search of nutrients and where adversity is part of the DNA of each and every grape. But, as my good friend, Antonio Flores, says, “nothing that’s worthwhile is ever easy!”

Kavalieros is one of the highest-lying vineyards on the island (250 metres above sea level) a unique plot, located in the village of Imerovigli. Here there is a quest for distinctiveness, as defined by Paris Sigalas, one of the island’s iconic and most respected producers. He seeks to “bottle essence”, shaking off traditional shackles and listening to his terroir, in a perfect and equal understanding.

Kavalieros represents survival, here the expression “old vine” really means “old vine”, as over 65 years have passed since these vineyards were planted. If they could talk, they would surely tell us some fascinating tales after their lifetime spent contemplating in silence. These old vines are Assyrtiko, the authentic, native grape variety so symbolic of Santorini.

On the nose, the wine shows a certain austerity, where less is more, but its delicate citrus fruit comes through in an exquisite harmony with the sweet spices and the oak, which Paris is so obsessed with. On the palate, the wine is direct, very vertical, with a great deal of acidity, yet reveals a beautiful texture and creaminess due to the work on the lees.

The wine has a resolutely Mediterranean profile, like its climate, showing us that behind those wonderful beaches, there lies a unique wine paradise well worth exploring.

So why not enjoy some bottles of wine with a story to tell?

Santorini, al mismo tiempo de ser una isla turística con buen tiempo y paisajes paradisiacos…También es una de las zonas más especiales del mundo vitivinicolamente hablando…

Unos paisajes donde el tiempo se detuvo, de la misma manera que se detiene un reloj de arena, cuando el último grano ha descendido a la parte inferior, entornos donde siempre nos quedará la belleza, de viñas conducionas en Stefani, una conducción donde los sarmientos se enrollan en sí mismo creando una especie de papelera, los racimos crecen dentro, protegidos de los cálidos vientos. Suelos volcánicos muy pobres, donde cada planta tiene que profundizar bien en el suelo en busca de nutrientes, donde las adversidades forman parte del adn de cada una de estas uvas, pero, como bien dice mi buen amigo Antonio Flores ¿Acaso existe algo que sea fácil y que merezca la pena?

Kavalieros es una de las parcelas más alta de la isla (250 metros sobre el nivel del mar) una parcela única,situada en el pueblo de Imerovigli, una búsqueda de la singularidad, interpretada por Paris Sigalas, uno de los icónicos y más respetados productores de la isla y para el que su principal cometido es embotellar esencia, liberándose de anclajes tradicionales y escuchando a su territorio, en un entendimiento perfecto y a iguales.

Kavalieros representa el valor de la supervivencia, donde la expresión “Viña vieja” cobra sentido, después de pasar más de 65 años desde que fueron plantadas, ojalá pudiesen hablar, seguro nos contarían historias fascinantes vividas en su larga vida contempladas desde el silencio… de Variedad Assyrtiko, para no perder el reclamo de la identidad de una variedad que en sí habla de Santorini.

Una nariz que habla de cierta austeridad, donde menos es más, pero esa delicada fruta cítrica asoma, en una armonía exquisita con las especias dulces y la madera que a Paris tanto le obsesiona conseguir, para terminar en una boca recta, muy vertical, mucha acidez, pero con una preciosa textura y cremosidad debido al trabajo con las lías.

Un perfil absolutamente meditarráneo, como su clima, para enseñarnos que detrás de esas playas maravillosas, existe un paraíso único de vinos de merece la pena explorar.

LAURENT PERRIER CONTINUES ITS SPORTS SPONSORSHIP As part of its ongoing sponsorships within

the sports world, and for the tenth consecutive year, Laurent-Perrier, Champagne’s bicentenary champagne house, was one of the sponsors of the Mutua Madrid Open, which attracts some of the world’s top clay-court tennis players.

DOWN ROOTS IN RUEDA Ramón Bilbao uncorked its first Rueda Verdejo in 2010. The début of this young, fresh Verdejo with the soul of a nearly-centenarian Rioja wine company, was most promising, as it has already received recognition and awards. Today, seven years since it arrived in the Rueda D.O., and having gained greater experience and knowledge of the native grape varieties, their soils, the climate and the culture of its people, Ramón Bilbao is performing the final act of establishing itself in the Rueda: the inauguration of its new winery.

Hoy, siete años después de aquellos primeros pasos en la DO Rueda, y con un bagaje importante y un mayor conocimiento de las variedades autóctonas, de sus suelos, del clima y de la cultura de sus gentes, Ramón Bilbao da el paso definitivo para empadronarse en Rueda: La inauguración de su nueva Bodega.

THE WINERY. RAMÓN BILBAO LAYS DOWN ROOTS IN RUEDA

A new winery to produce, age and carefully shape the wines destined for the Ramón Bilbao Rueda brand. A new winemaking horizon with new landscapes and a fabulous 60 hectares of owned vineyards. A “Château Winery”, surrounded by plots of old vines and other parcels of new plantings that will ensure that its future is “fruitful”.

We were treated to a private tour, hosted by Sara Bañuelos, the winemaker at the new winery, and Alberto Sardón, the Zamora company’s director of innovation and communication, during which they talked to us about this new business venture in great detail. In this article we have picked out the information that we believe will be of most interest to our readers.

Sara Bañuelos is a graduate in Oenology and Technical Agricultural Engineering for the Food Industry. She was born and bred in the Rioja region, but has experience in other D.O.s. She spoke to us of Ramón Bilbao’s plans for Rueda with great enthusiasm and energy.

She took the lead at Ramón Bilbao Rueda, having worked for various Rueda producers, both large and family-sized, which has exposed her to different approaches in terms of winery management and winemaking.

Alberto’s professional background is impressive (he worked with Miguel and Marcos Eguren for a number of years...). He joined Ramón Bilbao because he was attracted to the new venture, which included the creation of this new winery, and he has invested himself 200%. He lives by and for his work and emits knowledge and savoir-faire.

But let’s talk about the new venture itself, which is what interests us most. Until now, the grapes destined for Ramón Bilbao’s wines have been sourced from wine growers under a supply agreement (115 Ha.).

But for this new venture, they have acquired a large area of land (60 ha.), of which 5 ha. are of old Verdejo vines, planted in 1999. This will give them a greater supply of their own grapes in a few years’ time, while continuing their long-term agreements with the local wine growers, in their quest for stronger identity, finer grapes and lower yields.

The construction of the winery, designed by the family’s architects, started about 2 years ago (2015). They decided not to go for a famous architect, preferring instead to invest in the perfect tools to produce the best possible Verdejo: concrete tanks, wooden foudres, Bordeaux barrels made from different oaks, etc.

They already handled their first grape harvest in 2016 using grapes bought from other wine growers. They brought in about one million kilos of Verdejo and Sauvignon Blanc grapes. They will produce around 750,000 bottles of the Verdejo, which will be distributed according to their demand. The company’s winemaker told us that they “consider it more appropriate to store the wine in tanks, where it evolves more slowly than if it were bottled and stored in the cellar”. They will know the final number of Sauvignon Blanc bottles, the first vintage produced, once they have bottled all the production, but the initial feedback from the market and from wine critics is very encouraging.

This venture also has something else that sets it apart from the rest of the Rueda D.O.: “we studied the terroir before planting”. They carried out 77 soil trials before planting the vineyards. From these analyses, they identified two types of soil: carbonated and non-carbonated.

The former retains more water than the latter, which was an important factor when deciding where to plant the Sauvignon Blanc grape and where to plant the Verdejo. The former is planted in more humid areas, those with carbonated soil, and the latter in the drier areas, since the Verdejo grape is more accustomed to this type of terroir. Given that the area is rather dry, drip irrigation is used throughout the vineyards to prevent extreme drought (when the Rueda D.O permit it, of course.).

Una nueva Bodega para elaborar, criar y mimar hasta el último

detalle de la marca Ramón Bilbao Rueda. Un nuevo horizonte enológico de nuevos paisajes y con 60 hectáreas en propiedad que invitan a soñar. Una Bodega Château, rodeada de parcelas de viña vieja y de otras de nueva plantación para asegurar un próspero futuro.

Tuvimos la oportunidad de tener una visita privada con la enóloga de esta nueva bodega, Sara Bañuelos, y con el director de innovación y comunicación de Zamora Company, Alberto Saldón, en la que nos explicaron el proyecto con muchos detalles, de los que les explicaremos algunas cosas que creemos que pueden ser de su interés y que pueden ver la luz.

Sara Bañuelos es Licenciada en Enología e Ingeniería Técnica Agrícola en Industrias Alimentarias. Riojana de Pura cepa pero con amplia experiencia en otras Denominaciones, nos transmitió pasión y energía a raudales explicándonos el proyecto de Ramón Bilbao en Rueda.

Sara comenzó a liderar el proyecto de Ramón Bilbao Rueda después de acumular vendimias en diferentes bodegas de la Denominación, tanto grandes bodegas como de tamaño familiar, lo que le ha dado diferentes visiones de gestión y elaboración.

Alberto, con un bagaje profesional importante (ha trabajado durante años con Miguel y Marcos Eguren…) llegó a Ramón Bilbao atraído por un nuevo proyecto, en el que ya estaba prevista la creación de esta nueva bodega y en la que se ha involucrado al 200%. Vive por y para su trabajo y transmite conocimientos y “savoir faire”.

Pero vamos con el proyecto en sí, que es lo que nos interesa. Hasta ahora, los vinos que hacía Ramón Bilbao, provenían de viñedos de viticultores con los que tenían un acuerdo (115 Ha.), pero para este proyecto han adquirido una gran cantidad de terreno (60 Ha.), de las que 5 Ha. son de viñedo antiguo (verdejo), plantadas en 1999. Esto les permitirá en pocos años poder contar con un mayor aprovisionamiento de uva propia y continuar sus acuerdos de largo plazo con los viticultores locales en la búsqueda de más identidad, mejores uvas y rendimientos más bajos.

La construcción de esta bodega se inició hace aproximadamente 2 años (2015) y ha sido realizada por los arquitectos de la familia, desestimando la posibilidad de que un arquitecto famoso la realizase e invirtiendo todo el esfuerzo económico en las perfectas herramientas para elaborar el mejor verdejo posible: depósitos de hormigón, foudres de madera, barricas bordelesas de diferentes procedencias, …

Ya en el 2016 pudieron realizar la primera vendimia, obviamente con uvas compradas a otros viticultores. Se entraron cerca de un millón de kilos de uva, entre las variedades Verdejo y Sauvignon Blanc. Del verdejo acabarán saliendo al mercado unas 750.000 botellas aproximadamente. Este vino lo distribuyen en función de la demanda que tienen. Desde la bodega, su enóloga, nos comenta que “consideran más oportuno conservarlo en depósitos, donde evoluciona más lentamente que si lo embotellásemos y lo guardásemos en la bodega”. Del Sauvignon Blanc, del que era la primera vendimia,… sabrán el número cuando hayan embotellado toda la producción, pero la aceptación del mercado y las opiniones de los críticos vislumbran datos muy positivos de esta primera añada.

Esta bodega y su proyecto tienen una particularidad que las diferencia de las del resto de la D.O.Rueda: “nosotros hemos estudiado el terreno antes de plantar”. Se realizaron 77 calicatas antes de empezar a plantar viñedos. De ese análisis detectaron, básicamente, dos tipos de suelo característicos: carbonatados y no carbonatados. Los primeros retienen más el agua que los segundos, lo cual fue esencial conocer para decidir dónde plantaban la uva Sauvignon Blanc y dónde la Verdejo. La primera en las zonas más húmedas, las de suelo carbonatado, y la segunda en las zonas más secas, ya que la uva verdejo está más acostumbrada a ese tipo de terreno. Dado que la zona es más bien seca, en todo el terreno hay riego por goteo, para evitar la sequía excesiva (siempre con el permiso por parte de la D.O.Rueda si han de regar…)

Being a new winery, they also wanted to experiment with the orientation of the vineyards and they played around with several different orientations in order to determine which was the most suitable for the two types of grape.

As we have already mentioned, the first harvest took place in 2016, with the grapes brought into the new winery.

Harvesting is always carried out at night, due to the variance between day-time temperatures, which can exceed 30°C, and night-time temperatures, which can drop to around 8°C. In this way they manage to prevent oxydation and the spontaneous start of fermentation.

Although a small proportion of the harvesting is carried out by hand, 95% of it is fully mechanized. It is all about optimizing timings, according to Sara Bañuelos, Ramón Bilbao’s oenologist.

Another important consideration when building the winery was its location vis-à-vis its vineyards. It was thought important that the grapes, once harvested, should be brought into the winery as quickly as possible and that the building should therefore be located in the middle of the vineyards, in the manner of a French château. In this way, the furthest point of grape collection is half an hour away, at most, from the point of discharge.

According to Sara, this winery is “very technology-driven, in which the timing of the harvest is crucial. We work with different types of tanks to see how the wines develop in each of them and what these bring us.” Stainless steel vats of various capacities, large 4,500 litre French oak foudres, Bordeaux barrels made of French, American and Hungarian oak, and concrete tanks. These are, as they put it, “the working tools of our winemaking activity”.

Sara explains that the stainless steel, “brings out more of the fruit, expresses the varietal more”. Concrete “is more porous, fermentation is different and gives the wine more volume on the palate. But it’s a tool that requires greater attention.” Their concrete tanks differ from most of the others on the market, as they have a water system between the exterior and interior walls that serves to cool the tank and this allows them to regulate the temperature.

Al ser una bodega nueva también han querido experimentar con la orientación de los viñedos y han jugado a colocar varias y diferentes orientaciones para estudiar cuál es la más idónea para los dos tipos de uva.

Como ya hemos comentado anteriormente, en el 2016 realizaron la primera vendimia en la que la uva entró en la nueva bodega. Siempre vendimias nocturnas, dado el elevado contraste térmico entre el día, donde pueden sobrepasar los 30 grados, y la noche, donde pueden estar a 8. De esta forma evitan oxidaciones y arranques espontáneos de fermentación.

Aunque una mínima parte de la vendimia se hace de forma manual, el 95% está totalmente mecanizado. Es una cuestión de optimización de timings, según nos comenta Sara Bañuelos, la enóloga de Ramón Bilbao.

Otra cuestión a remarcar a la hora de crear la bodega fue el posicionamiento de la misma versus los viñedos. Se pensó que era importante que la uva, una vez vendimiada, entrase en la bodega lo más rápidamente posible y para ello el edificio está ubicado en el medio de los viñedos, al estilo de un château francés. De esta forma, el punto más lejano de recogida de uva se encuentra, como mucho, a media hora del punto de descarga.

Esta bodega, nos comenta Sara, es “una bodega muy tecnológica, en la que el momento de la vendimia, para nosotros, es crítico. Trabajamos con diferentes tipos de depósitos para ver cómo evolucionan los vinos en cada uno de ellos y ver qué nos aportan”. Depósitos de acero inoxidable de diferentes capacidades, foudres de madera de roble francés con capacidad de 4500 litros, barricas bordelesas de roble francés, americano y húngaro y depósitos de hormigón. Estas son, como ellos las llaman, “las herramientas de trabajo para elaborar nuestros vinos”.

Nos explica Sara que el acero inoxidable, “nos revela más la fruta, nos expresa más la variedad”. El hormigón, “es más poroso, la fermentación es diferente y aporta volumen en boca al vino. Pero es una herramienta que necesita más dedicación”. Sus depósitos de hormigón son diferentes a la mayoría de los que hay en el mercado, ya que entre las paredes exteriores e interiores hay un sistema de agua que sirve para refrigerar el depósito y les permite regular la temperatura.

For the Verdejo grape, they only use stainless steel vats, “because it gives us a very specific style, which is what we want for our Verdejo.” For the Sauvignon Blanc, on the other hand, “we use the three materials and we create a blend, with a third of the wine coming from each of the different types of container”. For the time being, they want to experiment and who knows, maybe in the future, in addition to the blend, they might want to make a wine from each type of container?

De momento quieren ir experimentando y quién sabe, quizás en el futuro se planteen hacer, además del coupage, un vino proveniente de cada uno de los diferentes tipos de depósito”.

Taking advantage of a few days’ holiday in the

French Basque Country, one of the things that the family

suggested we do, given my links with the wine world, was to take a trip up to Bordeaux, one of the world’s “wine capitals”.

Who doesn’t know about the wines from Bordeaux? I think that everyone, whether a wine connoisseur or humble consumer, has, on occasion, heard about, or cited, the wines from this famous French wine region.

But the purpose of our trip to Bordeaux was not to visit its vineyards (which we will do next time), but to pay a visit to the fledgling “Cité du Vin” (the city of wine). I say “fledgling”, because it was only just over one year ago, on 31 May 2016, that this wine centre, with its somewhat psychedelic, wine decanter-shaped design, was opened by the then President of the French Republic, Monsieur François Hollande.

The fact that this centre is located on the outskirts of the city (perhaps too far out, in my humble opinion) has not prevented it from attracting a considerable number of visitors, both domestic and international. According to the organization behind the Cité du Vin, around 425,000 visitors from 150 different countries have passed through the Centre’s doors in its first year, which gives you some idea of ​​the universal appeal of wine.

Of the total number of visitors, 27% of them came from outside France, which augurs well for the future of the Centre. And, just to finish this section on statistics, these foreign visitors have come primarily from the UK (14%), the USA (11%), Switzerland (9%) and Spain, with a more than respectable 8%.

I could go on spouting statistics, but I don’t want to bore you, and instead I will talk about the visit itself, which is what is of most interest to you, dear Selectus Wines reader.

Aprovechando unos días de vacaciones al País Vasco-

Francés, y dada mi relación con el mundo del vino, una de las actividades que la familia propuso fue la de desplazarnos hasta Burdeos, una de las “capitales del vino” a nivel mundial. ¿Quién no ha oído hablar de los vinos de Burdeos? Creo que todo el mundo, tanto los consumidores más expertos como los consumidores más convencionales, en alguna ocasión han comentado o han escuchado opiniones al respecto de los vinos de esta reputada región francesa.

Pero el motivo de la visita a Burdeos no era visitar viñedos, lo que nos reservamos para una próxima ocasión, sino acercarnos hasta una joven “Cité du Vin” (La ciudad del vino).

Lo de joven viene dado por el hecho de que hace apenas un año, concretamente el 31 de Mayo de 2016, que este centro del vino, con una forma un poco psicodélica, que parece representar un decantador, fue inaugurada por el entonces Presidente de la República Francesa, el Sr. François Hollande.

La verdad es que un centro de estas características ubicado a las afueras de la ciudad (quizás demasiado a las afueras desde mi modesto punto de vista), no es óbice para que tenga una considerable cantidad de visitantes, tanto nacionales como extranjeros. Según los datos facilitados por la propia organización, han sido unos 425.000 visitantes de 150 países diferentes, los que, durante este primer año, han pasado por las instalaciones de este centro del vino, lo cual da una idea del gran interés por el vino que existe en todo el planeta.

Del total de visitantes, un 27% de los mismos son extranjeros, dato que para la organización genera muy buenas expectativas de cara al futuro. Y para cerrar el apartado estadístico, comentar que el origen de los principales visitantes extranjeros han sido: UK, con un 14%, USA con un 11%, Suiza con un 9% y España con un más que respetable 8%.

Hay muchos más datos estadísticos, pero no nos vamos a entretener con ellos, así que vamos a comentar la visita en sí misma, que es lo atractivo para usted, lector de Selectus Wines.

VISIT HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!: LA CITÉ DU VIN

The “wine city” is located a little outside the city centre, as I already mentioned, but it is well connected, which facilitates access. A well-organized reception area means that the queues are not too long, but I would nevertheless recommend you buy your entry tickets online before your visit.

The Cité du Vin is set out in a series of different spaces that obviously correspond to different “inputs”: there is a large conference room, where the inaugural speech took place, tasting rooms, a library, different themed areas, a shop, etc. In some of the spaces, the visitor can interact with different types of materials and in return, experience various sensory impressions (special mention must go to the aromas exhibit).

It has to be said that the exhibit designers have done a really good job, ensuring that the visitor “lives the wine” in all its facets. The space in which the history of wine and its importance over the centuries is explained, complete with holograms, was, for us, one of the highlights of the visit but, above all, we were impressed by the way in which they explain it all, in a highly instructive and non-boring manner.

I would also mention something that will interest families with children thinking about visiting this “wine museum”: they have done everything they possibly can to ensure that children are able to follow the visit “at their own pace”, i.e. there are special headsets for children and headsets are also available in 8 different languages.

El espacio en el que se desarrolla la visita, como he comentado anteriormente, queda un poco alejado del centro de la ciudad, pero está bien comunicado, lo que facilita el acceso al mismo. Una recepción bien organizada hace que las colas que se producen no sean excesivamente pesadas, pero recomendamos comprar las entradas con anterioridad a través de la web.

“La Cité du Vin” está organizada en diferentes estancias que, obviamente, corresponden a diferentes inputs: hay una gran sala de conferencias, donde se hizo el discurso inaugural, salas de cata, una biblioteca, zonas temáticas, una tienda,… En algunas de las zonas el visitante interactúa con diferentes materiales y recibe diferentes sensaciones (mención especial para la zona de los inputs olfativos).

La verdad es que los ideólogos del espacio han pensado en todos los detalles para que el visitante “viva el vino” desde todos sus puntos de vista. El espacio en el que se explica la historia del vino y su importancia en la vida cotidiana a lo largo de los siglos, con hologramas dinámicos, fue una de las cosas que más gustaron al que les escribe este artículo.

Y sobre todo la forma de explicarlo, muy didáctica y nada monótona. Hago un paréntesis para comentar un aspecto muy importante para cualquiera que quiera acercarse a visitar este “museo del vino”: todo está adaptado para que los niños también puedan seguir la visita “a su ritmo”, es decir, existe una versión de los audífonos que es para los más pequeños de la família, y está preparado en 8 idiomas diferentes.

Over the past year, in addition to the permanent exhibitions, they have held events, cultural activities and presentations on various themes or dedicated to wines from other parts of the world. Visitors can also pre-book a basic wine tasting session at set times.

To round off the visit, there is a Belvedere in the upper part of the building, where you can try various wines from different wine-producing countries. The room has 360° viewing gallery and, on a good day, the visitor can enjoy a panoramic view of Bordeaux’s Gironde area.

You should allow 3 to 3.5 hours for a quick visit, in order to (more or less) see all the spaces that can be explored in a standard visit, but this is not long enough if you want to really make the most of the experience or to explore a particular topic in greater depth. No, if it’s a full and complete visit you want, then you should plan to spend the entire day at the Cité du Vin. If you are considering this option, then the Cité du Vin also has one or two restaurants where you can grab a bite to eat and try some wine (mainly French, naturellement!).

Durante el año se van produciendo, además de las exposiciones fijas, algunos eventos, actividades culturales o presentaciones de diferentes temáticas o dedicadas a diferentes zonas del mundo donde se producen vinos. También se pueden realizar catas básicas a horas predeterminadas y con reserva previa.

Y para finalizar la visita, en la parte superior del edificio, se encuentra la sala en la que se pueden degustar diferentes vinos de diferentes partes del mundo. Es una sala con una visión de 360º que permite ver, si las condiciones climatológicas lo permiten, una perspectiva de la zona de Burdeos, la Gironde.

El tiempo aproximado para realizar una visita rápida y ver, más o menos, todos los espacios que se pueden ver en un tour standard, puede ser de unas 3-3.30 horas, pero no es suficiente si quieres entretenerte en detalles o entrar más a fondo en según qué temáticas, por lo que en el caso de que quieran realizar una concienzuda visita, dediquen prácticamente todo un día a “La Cité du Vin”. Si se plantean esta opción, hay un par de restaurantes en los que poder comer y degustar algún vino (principalmente franceses, como no podía ser de otra forma…).

The auctioneering world is sometimes viewed as a little bit “peculiar”.

Collectors, speculators and art lovers? Or snobs, wine geeks and tycoons? Normally, we associate auctions with the sale of art or objects owned by the rich and famous…

Below are some of the lots that attracted the highest bids, running from the highest to the lowest.

However, from this issue of Selectus Wines, we will be reporting on auctions taking place in the wine world, not just any type of wine auction, but specifically the very high-profile auctions, which Sotheby’s carries out with some regularity around the world.

One of these high-profile auctions took place in London on 14 June.

The “Finest & Rarest Wines Auction” at Sotheby’s in London achieved a sale total of £828,270 ($1,060,186), exceeding estimates of between £500,270 and £631,170, and with 94% of the lots sold.

In the words of Stephen Mould, Head of Sotheby’s Wine, Europe “prices, in particular for Burgundy, were sensational….,” especially the rare vintages from Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé, achieving multiples of their estimates. According to its spokesman, Stephen Mould, Sotheby’s conclusion from this auction is that “the overall result demonstrates the strength of the London wine market, which continues to attract a global audience”. SUBASTAS SOTHEBY'S

En general el tema de las subastas es un mundo un poco particular. ¿Coleccionistas, especuladores, amantes del arte,…? ¿O simplemente snobs, curiosos, potentados,…? Normalmente relacionamos el mundo de las subastas con la venta de objetos de arte, u objetos cuyos propietarios han sido famosos.

A partir de este número vamos a explicar subastas que se producen en el mundo del vino, pero no cualquier tipo de subastas, sino subastas de altos vuelos, las que de forma más o menos regular realiza Sotheby´s a lo largo y ancho del planeta.

El pasado 14 de junio, en Londres, se celebró una de esas subastas “de peso”. La subasta de los vinos Finest & Rarest Wines en Sotheby’s en Londres llegó a las 828.270 libras esterlinas (1.060.186 dólares), superando las expectativas de venta, que se habían calculado entre los 500.270 y 631.170 y vendiéndose el 94% de todos los lotes que estaban en dicha subasta.

Según palabras de Stephen Mould, Jefe de Sotheby’s Wine, Europa “los precios, en particular para Borgoña fueron sensacionales”, sobre todo las botellas de Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé que multiplicaron considerablemente las expectativas. El resumen que saca Sotheby´s de esta subasta, a través de su portavoz, Stephen Mould, es que “se demuestra la fortaleza del mercado vitivinícola londinense, que continúa atrayendo a una audiencia

global” La próxima subasta está prevista para mediados de Septiembre… y tienen muchas expectativas depositadas en ella…

LOCAL WINE AND CHEESE PAIRINGS FROM ACROSS THE USA ARMONÍAS DE VINOS Y QUESOS LOCALES DE TODAS PARTES DE LOS EEUU Wine and cheese pair like salt and pepper, peas in a pod…the list of duos could go on and on.

The USA is the world’s fourth largest wine producer and, for well over a decade, wine has been made in every State.

Cheese production is big here, too, and it’s not just coming from Wisconsin – America’s “Cheese Capital”. According to the International Dairy Foods Association, in 2013 for the 21st straight year in a row, natural cheese production hit a new record level.

Yes, there’s plenty of mozzarella string sticks and shredded cheese for Tex-Mex or Cal-Mex and for sprinkling on pizzas.

But, artisanal cheese continues to grow. According to Christian Miller, proprietor of Full Glass Research and cheese research guru, it’s mostly impossible to count the number of cheese producers today, so fractured is the industry.

Anyway, reading statistics does not satisfy the same way that hands-on research does. Here are some great local wine and cheese pairings to consider on your next tour of the US countryside.

CALIFORNIA: Carracioli Cellars Brut Cuvée and Fiscalini Cheese Company San Joaquin Gold.

The Carracioli Cellars Brut Cuvée tastes of buttered and toasted brioche, a flavor that melds delightfully with the toasted Brazil nut tones of a nicely aged San Joaquin Gold, which is aged a minimum of 12 months before release.

Despite being dynamically unctuous on the palate, both parts of this pairing have crackling acidity, melding structure with flavor.

COLORADO: Plum Creek Winery Dry Riesling with AnnaVail Cheese Baamoozola The blended sheep’s and cow’s milk blue cheese has a delightfully mouthfilling texture. Its ideal foil is a crisply dry Riesling that contrasts its earthy blue notes with delightful primary, pit fruit flavors.

IDAHO: Telaya Wine Company Turas with Ballard Cheese Smokin’ Joe Gouda The Turas is always made with a dominant component of Syrah blended with a variety of grapes, including Malbec and Merlot depending on the year. The blend takes on smoky, toasty characters from new and used French oak that hone in on flavors found in this unique smoked cheese.

The lightly tangy crunch in the cheese gives the duo just the right amount of lift.

MICHIGAN: Chateau Grand Traverse Etcetera Rosé with Leelanau Cheese Aged Raclette Raclette is a delightfully funky cheese, so it needs a wine full of character to stand up to it. This rosé is a smart companion as its red fruit-driven flavors – especially from 38

the Gamay and Merlot - off-set the cheese’s earthiness, while its woodsy undertones – derived from the Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc, match them. Moreover, both elements are distinctly mid-weight in body.

NEW YORK: Millbrook Vineyards and Winery Brut Proprietor’s Special Reserve with Coach Farm Fresh Goat Cheese The tang of this fresh goat cheese works particularly well with this sparkling wine in a warm goat cheese salad. The acidity of the bubbly matches the cheese’s perkiness, the wine’s citrus tones pair up to the dressing and the leesy characters of the sparkler work nicely with the bread toasts.

OREGON: Brooks Winery Riesling Sweet P with Face Rock Creamery Fromage Blanc - Apricot Both this wine and this cheese have a seemingly light attack backed-up with a dense concentration of flavor.

Sweetness-wise, this is a perfect match when paired with a sweet-savory flavored toast sliver, like a rosemary and fig cracker.

TEXAS: Flat Creek Estate Blanc du Bois with The Mozzarella Company Hoja Santa Hoja Santa is a goat milk cheese aged in a Hoja Santa leaf, stemming (yes, literally!) from the Hoja Santa plant that grows in Southern Texas and Mexico. The leaf gives the cheese an herbal and cracked black pepper edge that works seamlessly with the cheese’s noticeable acidity. Blanc du Bois is one of the best hybrid grapes in the USA, along with Vidal found in cooler climates, and its citrusy vibe and crackling acidity blend beautifully with this cheese.

VERMONT: Shelburne Vineyard Marquette or Marquette UnTamed with Shelburne Farms Smoke Cheddar Marquette is a Pinot Noir-esque hybrid that tastes of black cherries. The smoothness of the fruit and tannins blend pleasantly with the cheddar’s hearty flavor. When aged in new or partially new oak, it takes on spicy tones that pair well with this cheddar’s smokiness.

VIRGINIA: Keswick Vineyards Viognier Reserve with Meadow Creek Dairy Mountaineer The Mountaineer is an aged, alpine-style cheese. Its creamy texture and nutty overtones work in harmony with the wine’s light, new oak aging and lush pit fruit of apricots and peaches.

WASHINGTON: Woodward Canyon Cabernet Sauvignon with Beecher’s Handmade Cheese 4-Year Aged Flagship This duo is a flavor explosion! Each component has loads of savoriness and bristling tension, thanks to the vibrant acidity of the Cabernet Sauvignon or the crystalline crunchiness of the cheese. Additionally, the smoothly ripe fruit of the wine nicely melds with the vague oak sweetness of the wine.

Los EEUU es el cuarto productor de vino del mundo, y por más de una década se ha estado produciendo vino en cada uno de los estados. La producción de queso en el país es importante también, y no proviene únicamente de Wisconsin - la “Capital del queso” de EEUU. Según la Asociación Internacional de Productos lácteos, en 2013 la producción de queso natural registró un nuevo récord.

Esto sucede desde hace 21 años de forma consecutiva.

Sí, esto incluye muchos palitos de mozzarella y queso rallado para comida Tex-Mex o Cal-Mex y para esparcir sobre pizzas. Pero el queso artesanal continúa en crecimiento. TEXAS: Blanc du Bois de Flat Creek Estate con Hoja Santa de The Mozzarella Company Hoja Santa es un queso de leche de cabra madurado en una hoja santa, que proviene (¡sí, literalmente!) de la planta Hoja Santa que crece en el sur de Texas y en México. La hoja le da al queso notas de hierbas y pimienta negra molida que maridan a la perfección con la acidez evidente del queso. Blanc du Bois es una de las mejores uvas híbridas de los EEUU, en conjunto con Vidal que se encuentra en climas más frescos. Su vibra cítrica y acidez crujiente se mezclan maravillosamente con este queso.

VERMONT: Marquette o Marquette UnTamed de Shelburne Vineyard con Cheddar ahumado de Shelburne Farms Marquette es una uva híbrida parecida a la Pinot Noir que sabe a cerezas negras. La suavidad de la fruta y los taninos se funden agradablemente con el sabor robusto del cheddar. Cuando se madura en roble nuevo o parcialmente nuevo, adopta notas especiadas que armonizan muy bien con las notas ahumadas de este cheddar.

VIRGINIA: Viognier Reserve de Keswick Vineyards con Mountaineer de Meadow Creek Dairy El Mountaineer es un queso madurado de estilo alpino.

Su textura cremosa y aromas a nuez armonizan con el envejecimiento ligero en roble nuevo del vino y deliciosos aromas a frutos de hueso como albaricoque y melocotón.

THE WORLD’S BEST WINE SHOPS

Bernd Kreis, Best Sommelier in Europe in 1992, is the owner of this fine establishment located in the centre of Stuttgart and considered to be one of the best wine shops in the world.

The story of this sommelier, who will tell you that his “life is wine”, began in the Wielandshöhe restaurant (1 Michelin star), where he worked until 2001. In 1994, while still employed at the restaurant, serving and advising customers, he set up his own company, to which he dedicated his free time and holidays, opening his first small shop in a suburb of the German city.

His business grew steadily, so he decided to leave the restaurant, where he had spent so much of his working life, and devote himself entirely to the business of buying and selling wines. He opened a second shop, in the centre of Stuttgart, larger and better located than the first.

In 2012, they moved again to the final (for now?) shop in Dorotheenstrasse 2, next to the Markthalle (market) in “Schillerplatz”, one of Stuttgart’s most beautiful squares. This square is home to a flea market three times a week, a wine festival in the summer and Stuttgart’s famous Christmas Market in the winter. In short, the shop is located in the beating heart of the city and, as a consequence, enjoys a fairly constant footfall.

According to Bernd, when he was working on the store’s identity, he “wanted to do away with wine clichés and hypocrisy, in order to create a romanticism where there wasn’t any”. To achieve this, he decided not to use any of the materials usually associated with wine, such as stone, terracotta, wood, steel, and so on, which forced the architect to come up with an alternative way of presenting the wines, and which, in turn, has given the store its great personality and originality. The shelving, referred to as “fourpointeight”, was created exclusively for the store, and can now be purchased “in situ”.

When they designed the store, they decided to include a small wine bar-like area, which has become a unique space where young customers can discover the world of wine and explore the “liquid element’. They offer a very good selection of craft wines and, in order to further enhance the wine tasting experience, they have created an ambiance with different styles of music, including jazz, rock, salsa, blues and punk.

As it is a rather small space (around 80 M2), the wine tasters are seated close to each other, and this often creates conversations and an exchange of opinions, which adds a social dimension to the wine drinking experience.

To maintain the high quality of the range of wines on offer, and particularly the craft wines, most of which are organic or biodynamic, Bernd spends much of his time on the road in search of those little gems that end up in his original store in the centre of Stuttgart.

LAS MEJORES TIENDAS DE VINOS DEL MUNDO

Bernd Kreis, proclamado en 1992 como el mejor sumiller de Europa es el propietario de este establecimiento situado en el centro de Stuttgart y que está considerado como uno de las mejores tiendas de vinos del mundo.

La historia de este sumiller para el que “mi vida es el vino” comenzó en el restaurante Wielandshöhe (1* Michelín), donde estuvo trabajando hasta 2001. Al mismo tiempo que servía y asesoraba sobre los vinos a los clientes del restaurante, creó en 1994 su propia empresa, a la que dedicaba sus ratos libres y sus días de fiesta, y tuvo su primer local en una pequeña tienda en un suburbio de la ciudad alemana.

Dado que el negocio crecía de forma constante, tomó la decisión de dejar el restaurante al que le dedicó muchos años de su vida, y dedicarse en cuerpo y alma al negocio de la compraventa de vinos. Para ello abrió una segunda tienda, ya en el centro de Stuttgart, más amplia y, obviamente, mejor situada que la anterior.

Y en el 2012 realizaron un nuevo y, de momento, último traslado a la actual tienda, en Dorotheenstraße 2, al lado de la Markthalle (mercado), en una de las plazas más hermosas “Schillerplatz” en Stuttgart. En esta plaza hay mercadillo tres veces por semana durante todo el año, en verano se celebra un festival del vino y en Diciembre el famoso Mercado de Navidad de Stuttgart. En conclusión, están en el centro de la actividad de la ciudad, con lo que ello representa y el movimiento constante de personas que entran y salen de la tienda.

Según palabras del propio Bernd, a la hora de dar identidad a la tienda, “quería deshacerme de todos los clichés sobre el vino y de toda la hipocresía sobre el vino para crear romanticismo donde no existe” y para ello se negó a utilizar todos los materiales que habitualmente se vinculan al vino: piedra, terracota, madera, acero,…, lo que obligó al arquitecto a diseñar una forma de almacenaje de los vinos diferente a las habituales, lo que da una gran personalidad y originalidad al espacio. Las estanterías se llaman “fourpointeight” y se crearon en exclusiva para la tienda, y actualmente se pueden comprar “in situ”.

En el momento de diseñar el espacio, se creó un pequeño espacio, a modo de bar de vinos, que se ha convertido en un lugar de descubrimiento del líquido elemento para jóvenes que quieren descubrir el mundo del vino en un lugar muy especial. Tienen una muy buena selección de vinos artesanales y para catarlos se crea una atmósfera con música de diferentes estilos, desde jazz al rock, pasando por la salsa, el blues, punk,…

Al ser un lugar más bien pequeño (unos 80 metros cuadrados) a la hora de degustar vinos las personas se encuentran bastante cerca los unos de los otros, y en más de una ocasión se generan conversaciones e intercambio de opiniones, lo cual da una visión social de lo que supone tomar vino.

Para mantener el nivel de los vinos que tienen Bernd en su tienda, sobre todo los artesanales, la mayoría de los cuales son orgánicos o biodinámicos, pasa buena parte de su tiempo de viaje, a la búsqueda de esas joyas que, finalmente, aterrizan en su original tienda en el centro de Stuttgart.

Bernd has a small vineyard near Stuttgart, where he produces a few bottles for his own consumption and which can also be tasted in the store. One day, the famous jazz pianist and singer, Diana Krall, came into the store and she and her entourage tried Bernd’s wine.

Impressed by the quality of the product, the guitarist, Anthony Wilson, decided to buy some bottles for the band to enjoy with their meals and, before their Stuttgart gig, they drunk some of the wine. Such was the success of the wine, that Diana Krall herself even mentioned it during her concert.

LA ANÉCDOTA Bernd tiene un pequeño viñedo en las cercanías de Stuttgart, donde produce una limitada cantidad de botellas para su propio consumo y que también se puede degustar en la tienda.

En una ocasión, la famosa cantante Diana Krall visitó la tienda y tanto ella como su equipo degustaron el vino de Bernd, y su guitarrista, Anthony Wilson, gran entusiasta de los vinos, dada la calidad del producto, decidió comprar algunas botellas para compartir en alguna de las comidas de los componentes de la banda y antes del concierto que celebraron en la ciudad alemana, tomaron alguna copa.

Tal fue el éxito del vino, que durante el concierto, la propia Diana Krall hizo mención del mismo.

How many bottles do you usually stock?

As we import all our wines ourselves, we have a huge stock. In the Dorotheenstrasse store we have the capacity to store approximately 10,000 bottles, but the actual stock is smaller - approximately 6,000 bottles. We receive deliveries from our main store twice a week.

LIVE TATTOOING OF VIÑA POMAL WINE BARRELS Artist, Mao Bufonetti, recently tattooed a barrel of a very special wine in Barcelona Viña Pomal Compromiso.

This was part of Viña Pomal’s campaign to convey the lifetime values of commitment (the wine’s name, Compromiso, means commitment), origin, tradition and the land from which the wine is born. Internationally recognized tattoo artists had therefore been asked to tattoo the barrels “by fire”, ensuring the barrels display these values “for a lifetime”.

Marcel Ott, a young agronomist of Alsatian origin, established his wine business 120 years ago, in the firm belief that only the best land could produce the best wines. And, with that in mind, he sought out unique vineyard plots in one of the oldest wine regions in France - Provence. Sun, sea, and limestone soil…

Marcel wanted to revive an area whose vineyards had been destroyed by Phylloxera to restore the vineyards and its wines to their former glory. He therefore replanted the vineyards with high-quality, noble grape varieties with which to produce his wines, which are still the gold standard today.

So, at the heart of this unique wine, and the pure essence of the brand, lies the original philosophy behind Monsieur Ott’s wines and vineyards.

Clos Mireille comes from a single vineyard, which gives it its name and personality, and from poor, saline soils, which endow it with breadth, freshness and an array of aromas and flavours.

The Bordeaux Semillon grape creates the wine’s structure and makes up most of its blend, complemented, in this case, by the native Rolle, a fresh, upfront grape variety, which is also used in the majority of the region’s rosés, along with the ubiquitous Grenache.

Clos Mireille is therefore a wine that very elegantly reveals the purity of its origins, displaying a bright sunny hue, the refreshing saltiness of the sea, and the balsamic and aromatic splendour of the Mediterranean vineyard landscape.

Cuando Marcel Ott, joven ingeniero agrónomo de origen Alsaciano, inició su aventura vinicola ahora hace 120 años, tenía absolutamente claro que sólo de las mejores tierras podría elaborar los mejores vinos, y así fue como se embarcó en la búsqueda de parcelas y viñedos únicos en una de las regiones vinícolas más antiguas de Francia, la Provenza. Mar, sol y suelos calizos.

El deseo prioritario de Marcel fue el de recuperar una zona devastada por la filoxera y recuperar el prestigio histórico de viñedos y vinos, apostando por replantar variedades nobles y de alta calidad para conseguir elaborar sus vinos, unos vinos que aun hoy siguen siendo sinónimo de prestigio y valor seguro.

Así pues, si vinculamos la filosofía original de Monsieur Ott de vino y viñedo, encontraremos en este singular vino, la pura esencia de la marca.

Rioja winery (it will celebrate its 100 year anniversary in 2024), travelled to a Madrid aerodrome to unveil the new image for its Viñedos de Altura 2013 wine, and to invite guests to a unique experience, courtesy of 21st century adventurer, Ramón Larramendi.

The wine’s new, more daring and contemporary label features a mountain climber, a nod to the high-lying vineyards from which its grapes hail.

Some lucky guests were taken on a flight over the Sierra de Madrid in an ultralight aircraft.

Gramona is a wine company with huge influence in the cava world and a long history to its name, established

by Josep Batlle, near the River Noia, in the land of Sant Sadurní, back in 1850. He laid the first foundations of what was to become a sumptuous temple to sparkling wine and his surname graces the label of the company’s most premium cava. At around the same time, on the other side of the family, there was another Josep, whose surname was Gramona. This Josep owned a wine warehouse and several taverns in Barcelona, as well as being the president of the Taverners Guild and an important figure in the industry. We can only speculate that these two men knew each other, as the second Josep was also a native of Sant Sadurní d'Anoia. However, what we do know with certainty, is that Pilar Batlle, the granddaughter of the first Josep, and Bartolomé Gramona, the son of the second Josep, were wed. The father of the bride (and therefore the son of Josep Batlle) owned wineries and vineyards in 1881, so this marriage undoubtedly united two already very important wine families. They started to make a name for themselves in the production of sparkling wines. Until that time, sparkling wines had not been very common and the business had revolved around still wines. Their first bottles of cava appeared in 1921.

Gramona es una referencia de enorme predicamento en el universo del cava con una larga historia a sus espaldas iniciada por Josep Batlle allá por 1850 por tierras de San Sadurní cercanas al río Noia. El puso la primera piedra de lo que años atrás se convirtió en el suntuoso templo de la burbuja y su apellido lo ostenta el cava más “premium” de la casa. Por otro lado y coetáneamente, otro Josep, esta vez de apellido Gramona, era almacenista de vinos y propietario de varias tabernas en Barcelona, amén de ser el presidente del Gremio de Taberneros y un destacado personaje en el sector. Es probable que se conocieran por ser él también natural de San Sadurní de Noia pero lo cierto es que la nieta del primero, Pilar Batlle y el hijo del segundo, Bartolomé Gramona, se casaron. El padre de la novia, y por tanto hijo de Josep Batlle consiguió en el año 1881 tener sus bodegas y viñedos propios, de modo que este matrimonio supuso sin lugar a dudas la unión de dos familias ya muy significativas en el sector del vino, y que empezaban a despuntar en la elaboración de espumosos -anteriormente las burbujas no tenía mucha presencia y el negocio se basaba en vinos tranquilosconsiguiendo en 1921 las primeras botellas de cava.

THE HARDWORKING GENERATION Their descendants, Bartomeu and Josep Lluís Gramona, took over the family business in 1945. The Gramona company refers to them as the “hardworking generation”, due to their knack of being constantly ahead of their time. These pioneering brothers were the first to experiment with the ageing of their cavas.

In 1951, they produced the first Gramona III Lustros, which was released for sale 10 years later - with 10 years ageing! This was later reduced to 7 years ageing and Celler Batlle, created in homage to ancestor, Josep Batlle, replaced it as the cava with 10 years ageing.

Brothers, Bartomeu and Josep Lluís Gramona, were in charge of the company until the end of the 20th century, when they handed over to their respective sons, Xavier and Jaume, who have taken Gramona firmly down the route of environmentally-friendly winemaking.

They have been growing all their vineyards organically for years, and since 2014, several plots have been grown biodynamically, enjoying Demeter certification. The grapes from these plots are destined for their longestaged cavas (which, obviously, are not yet on the market) and for some of their still wines such as Bru Pinot Noir and the Xarel-lo Font Jui. 58

THE CATALAN DONKEY, THE BRETON HORSE AND THE ALBERA COW Teresa Martínez, a young agronomist from Rioja, is the company’s vineyard manager and she is absolutely passionate about biodynamics. She takes me around the estate giving me fascinating lessons on compost, sheep excrement (more expensive than cow’s, apparently), the time it takes to "ferment" (about a year), on the 500 and 501 preparations, the powered horns that are buried in certain locations (over 300), and the times of the year when you have to do this... Fourteen Albera cows from the Empordà region, a breed in danger of extinction, have been introduced on the estate for their excrement.

There are also several donkeys, most notably the Equus africanus asinus from Gerona, commonly known as the Catalan donkey, which is also in danger of extinction.

And there is even a sturdy Breton horse, whose strength is harnessed to pull the plough.... Animals and men working together to keep the earth healthy, along with the vine that grows in it and the humans who enjoy the sparkling wines, which emerge joyous and elegant from their years of ageing.

LA GENERACIÓN DEL ESFUERZO Sus descendientes Bartomeu y Josep Lluis Gramona, que se hicieron cargo de la empresa familiar en 1945, y a los que denominan la generación del esfuerzo por la enorme capacidad que tuvieron para adelantarse a su tiempo, fueron pioneros en apostar por dotar de largas crianzas a sus espumosos. Elaboraron en 1951 el primer Gramona III Lustros que comenzó a comercializarse 10 años después, con un mínimo de cinco años de crianza!!! Y también crearon una marca de mayor crianza, más de cinco años, en homenaje a su antepasado Josep Batlle. Los hermanos Bartomeu y Josep Luis Gramona estuvieron al frente de la firma hasta finales del siglo XX, cuando pasaron el testigo a sus respectivos hijos Xavier y Jaume, que han dado pasos de gigante en su compromiso con la tierra.

Desde hace años tienen todo su viñedo en ecológico y desde el 2014, trabajan varias parcelas totalmente en biodinamica, con certificado Demeter, para sus cavas de mayor crianza, que lógicamente aún no están en el mercado y para algunos vinos tranquilos como el Bru Pinot Noir y el xarel-lo Font Jui.

EL BURRO CATALÁN, EL CABALLO BRETÓN Y LA VACA DE L’ALBERA Teresa Martínez, la joven agrónoma riojana es la responsable técnica de la firma, una verdadera apasionada de la biodinámica -con la que recorro la finca- me da una verdadera lección sobre compost, excrementos de oveja, más caros que los de vaca, por cierto, el tiempo que ha de transcurrir para que “fermenten”, más o menos un año, sobre los preparados 500 y 501, los cuernos que se entierran en determinados lugares -más de 300- las épocas del año en las que hay que hacerlo…. Catorce vacas de la raza L’Albera, ampurdanesa y en peligro de extinción han sido traídas a estos parajes para producir excrementos.

También varios burros entre los que destaca la presencia, por su mayor envergadura, del Equus africanus asinus originario de Gerona, conocido como el burro catalán, que también se encuentra en peligro de extinción; más allá un caballo bretón, cuya fuerza y robustez sirve para tirar del arado…. Animales y hombres unidos para contribuir a la salud de la tierra, de la viña que en ella crece y de los humanos que disfrutamos con esas burbujas que cumplen años de crianza con alegría y elegancia.

Josep Roca, Ángel León, Ricard Camarena, François Chartier and Andoni Luis Aduriz were among the speakers on the opening day, praising the fine virtues of sherry. Our contributor, Paz Ivison, someone who has been instrumental in making these fabulous wines known outside Jerez, attended the two-day event.

The forum included discussions on the role of sherry, led by winemakers from some of the top sherry bodegas.

The PODIUM ONDER DE DOM restaurant won the Copa Jerez International Sherry and Food Matching Competition.

The jury considered the menu from chef, Leon Mazairac, and sommelier, Goos van den Berg, to be the best pairing between imaginative, high-quality cuisine and the acclaimed qualities of sherry wines.

dican su papel en la gastronomía internacional. Josep Roca, Ángel León, Ricard Camarena, François Chartier y Andoni Luis Aduriz fueron los protagonistas de la jornada inaugural en la que ensalzaron las virtudes de estos vinos.

Nuestra colaboradora, Paz Ivison, estuvo presente en dichas jornadas, siendo una de las personas que más ha dado a conocer estas joyas enológicas fuera del entorno jerezano.

También enólogos de algunas de las bodegas más representativas de Jerez tuvieron sus tertulias al respecto del protagonismo del Vino de Jerez.

Con respecto al concurso, el restaurante PODIUM ONDER DE DOM se ha impuesto en la Final Internacional de Copa Jerez. La propuesta del chef Leon Mazairac y el sumiller Goos van den Berg ha sido reconocida por el jurado como la mejor armonía entre la cocina imaginativa y de calidad y las aclamadas propiedades de los Vinos de Jerez.

EDITION OF ENOCURSA, THE TORRES WINE RACE

WThe 5th edition of the “race through the vineyards”, organized by “the world’s most admired winery”, attracted over 600 runners.

Torres has always liked to involve itself in an array of different social, cultural and sporting activities, and this was the fifth time it had held this annual fun race, in which participants get the chance to do a spot of exercise in the vineyards! The main aim of the event is for the participants to enjoy the environment and the countryside through which they run.

After the race, the participants enjoyed a Torres wine tasting set to music, in a fun, family atmosphere.

Más de 600 corredores se dieron cita en esta 5ª edición de la “carrera entre viñedos” que organiza la bodega más admirada del mundo.

En su afán por compaginar diversos tipos de actividades de carácter social, cultural, deportivo,… Bodegas Torres organiza desde hace un lustro esta carrera lúdico festiva para que los participantes hagan deporte entre los viñedos, dando un carácter informal al evento, en el que lo importante es disfrutar del ambiente y los paisajes que se recorren.

Posteriormente a la carrera, todos los participantes pudieron participar de una degustación de vinos amenizada con música, todo ello dentro de un ambiente familiar y festivo.

MOËT & CHANDON ENTERS THE GUINNESS BOOK OF RECORDS After 35 hours of hard work devoted to a very fine and tricky balancing act, with

20 people involved in the construction of a 66-floor pyramid, rising to a height of 7.26 metres and using a total of 50,166 glasses, Moët & Chandon made it into the Guinness Book of Records.

Never before had there been a pyramid of glasses as enormous as the one constructed by the Champagne House to celebrate its Moët Party Day. As usual, there were several well-known faces at the event: Mar Flores, Nicolás Coronado, Macarena Gómez, Carles Francino, Màxim Huerta and Paloma Lago were some of the guests who enjoyed a very pleasurable evening at La Casa Encendida, in Madrid.

MOËT & CHANDON ENTRA EN EL LIBRO GUINNESS DE LOS RÉCORDS Después de 35 horas de arduo trabajo, complicado y fino equilibrio, con

20 personas involucradas en la construcción de la pirámide de 66 pisos, con una altura de 7,26 metros, y un total de 50.116 copas utilizadas, Moët & Chandon entró en el Libro Guinness de Récords.

Nunca anteriormente se había conseguido una pirámide de copas tan grande como la que esta Maison de champagne con siguió con motivo de la celebración del Moët Party Day. Como no podía ser de otra forma, varios rostros conocidos se dejaron ver en el evento: Mar Flores, Nicolás Coronado, Macarena Gómez, Carles Francino, Màxim Huerta o Paloma Lago fueron algunos de los que disfrutaron de una agradable velada en La Casa Encendida, en Madrid.

EVENTS: THE “LUNG PROJECT”

THE “LUNG PROJECT” The worlds of wine and science, represented by

David Molina from Outlook Wine and Francesc Casas from the Hospital Clinic Barcelona, recently ​​ joined forces to raise funds for lung cancer research.

Over 180 guests attended an event which, with the admission fees, partnerships and non-cash donations from various companies, raised almost €60,000. Josep Roca, sommelier at the Celler de Can Roca, oncologist and soprano, Marta Bonet, El Bulli Foundation sommelier, Ferran Centelles, PFV Wine Ambassador, Christophe Brunet, journalist and sommelier, Meritxell Falgueras, and comedians Fel Faixedas and Carles Xuriguera, were among the guest speakers and each one of them interpreted a wine, connecting it with an art. This was then followed by a huge raffle, with over 70 wine prizes donated by well-known wineries from various Spanish wine regions, along with a wine tasting buffet for all the guests.

NO DOUBT THE EVENT WILL BE BACK NEXT YEAR, EVEN BIGGER AND BETTER!

El mundo del vino y la ciencia, de la mano de David Molina, de Outlook Wine y Francesc Casas, del Hospital Clinic Barcelona, se unen para recaudar fondos para la investigación contra el cáncer de pulmón.

Más de 180 personas se reunieron en una jornada en la que se recaudaron casi 60.000€ entre las entradas, colaboraciones y aportaciones en especies de diferentes empresas.

Josep Roca, sumiller del Celler de Can Roca, la oncóloga y soprano Marta Bonet, el sumiller de El Bulli Foundation Ferran Centelles, el Wine Ambassador de PFV Christophe Brunet, la periodista y sumiller Meritxell Falgueras y los actores cómicos Fel Faixedas y Carles Xuriguera fueron los ponentes y cada uno de ellos interpretó un vino relacionándolo con un arte.

Posteriormente se celebró una gran rifa con más de 70 lotes de vinos de prestigiosas bodegas de distintas Denominaciones de Origen y un buffet-degustación para todos los asistentes.
