A Select Detect Success Story: Reuter Dairy

euter Dairy Inc., located in Peosta, Iowa, was one of the first trial herds in the Midwest to install the Select Detect TM system. The Reuters – Rick and son, Dan – installed their Select Detect system in June of 2010 and one year later are very pleased with their investment. “The Select Detect system is one of many investments that we have made in recent years, and it has turned out to be one of the best that we have made,” noted Dan. Those include “you gotta make hay while the sun shines” and “any job is easy if you have the right equipment!”

There were several local tractor dealers, but Dad almost always dealt with the same one. I never understood why he chose that brand, and I always thought it was because the dealer was his buddy. Looking back, it had more to do with the tractor dealer’s service and the trust my father had in the dealership.

When a tractor would break down, the dealer would immediately bring a tractor to use as a loaner so we could finish the job, or in my father’s words “make hay while the sun shines,” while his men repaired the tractor.

ever avoided a professional to get the job done cheaper or quicker? After you completed the job, you realized you should have used the right equipment or asked for help from a well-trained professional. I know I have done this many times in my life.

Installation of Select Detect The Reuters first learned about the Select Detect system through their area sales representative.

“We were looking at a competitor’s product, and Dave mentioned that Select Sires was testing their own heat detection system,” commented Dan. “We researched

the system and liked many of the features of Select Detect compared to the competitor’s product. We appreciated that Select Detect recorded the cows 24 hours a day and the overall simplicity of the system.”

Since the installation of their system, the Reuters have hosted numerous open houses for local dairy producers who have an interest in learning more about Select Detect.

The Reuters purchased 300 collars for their herd of 805 cows.

These collars are placed on the cows from 21-30 days in milk.

Two base stations are mounted in the freestall barn to read the collars. Once cows are confirmed pregnant, the collars are removed.

They have had great success with collar retention and have yet to lose one. Recently, they purchased 25 additional collars and placed another base station in the heifer facility.

Results with Select Detect For the Reuters, there are many advantages to owning the Select Detect system, such as the increase in pregnancy rate, decreased use of hormones, as well as labor and time savings.

“I save many hours each day in labor because we are not checking for heats or chalking cows,” stated Dan. That labor savings also includes the time that is saved from their old synchronization program.

Previously, the dairy used OvSynch on 50 percent of the herd and has since reduced this to less than four percent. “We have nearly cut our OvSynch program out completely due to Select Detect.”

While the herd had tremendous reproductive success before installing the Select Detect system, they have seen jumps in all reproductive numbers since the installation. The conception rate

This investment was a no brainer.

De-Su Holsteins: Leading the Breed with Progressive Genetics De-Su Holsteins have been dominating the genomic rankings in North America since the innovation of genomic evaluations in April 2008. No herd in North America has more bulls over +2400 Genomic Total Performance IndexSM (GTPISM) than De-Su. And, they are the No. 1 supplier of bulls to Select Sires.

“I find that De-Su Holsteins is aggressive, progressive and honest in everything they do,” commented Scott Culbertson, Holstein sire analyst for Select Sires who works closely with the Meyer family to contract cattle from the herd. “This herd has always been a huge milk production herd and efficient in all dairy husbandry manners.

De-Su Holsteins is owned by Dean, Sue, Darrin and Dustin Meyer of New Albin, Iowa. The family milks 1,200 cows which has grown from 70 milking cows in the past fifteen years. The herd has a rolling herd average of 30,000

pounds of milk with a Somatic Cell Count (SCC) below 120,000.

Standing out in this crowd of cows is not a small feat, but the De-Su Patron Gold-ET (EX-90-GDM-DOM) family has risen above their herd mates with their high-ranking proven and genomic sires and tremendous daughters. This family is known for consistently producing mobile and fertile cows with good udders that last.

In particular, one De-Su-owned and -bred animal, De-Su Oman 6121-ET (VG-86-GMD-DOM), has proven this consistency by producing sons that top the GTPI list. She is out of the powerhouse family backed by Gold, De-Su BW Marshal Georgia-ET (EX-90EX-MS-GMD-DOM), who has three A.I.proven sons, including 7HO8777 De-Su Finley GENERAL-ET*TY. GENERAL is a popular choice for lowering Somatic Cell Count while improving udders.

One of the Picston Shottle-ET daughters of 6121, De-Su 7051 (VG87), is the dam of 7HO10989 De-Su KRAMER 715-ET*BY. KRAMER is a leading Ked Outside Jeeves-ET son at +2351 GTPI. Another Shottle daughter, De-Su 7045-ET (VG-85), is the dam of 7HO10356 De-Su WATSON*TY. He is an End-Road Pvf Boliver-ET son with elite GTPI of +2323. Both sires will add profitability to their daughters through their elite Net Merit dollar values.

De-Su 7012-ET (VG-87-DOM) is also making an impact as a sire mother.

She is a Shottle out of a full sister to 6121. 7012 is the dam of Super Samplers 7HO10272 De-Su FORK-ET*TY, 7HO10723 De-Su 527 SPUR-ET*TY, 7HO10884 De-Su AVERY 643-ET*TY and 7HO10984 De-Su NATIONAL 580-ET*TY. PLANET son SPUR leads the brothers with an elite GTPI of +2307. The four

diversely sired sons will add type and longevity to any breeding program.

FORK is sired by Sandy-Valley Bolton-ET, AVERY is an elite 7HO8221 Golden-Oaks St ALEXANDER-ET son, and NATIONAL is a Sandy-Valley Talent-ET son.

The De-Su herd continues to make a huge impact on genetics in North America with cows like 6121 and 7012. Culbertson stated, “They have so many vastly different families and branches to work with. They are keen to incorporating new genetic ideas, trying to make their best better.

“They do not rest on their laurels, and they maintain genetic excellence while tweaking one goal: to make the most efficient commercial cow in the breed. And no one does it better.”

As De-Su Holsteins works handin-hand with Select Sires in offering their best genetics, they are rising to the top of the Holstein breed with their exceptional genomics. 

De-Su 7012-ET (VG-87-DOM) is the dam of 7HO10272 FORK, 7HO10723 SPUR, 7HO10884 AVERY and 7HO10984 NATIONAL.

June 2009 marked a historical time in Select Sires history when the Select Sires board of directors approved a new program, Aggressive Reproductive TechnologiesTM (ARTTM). The program was developed to more fully utilize the genomic tools available, create pedigrees of unique ancestry with high genetic rank, and look at ways large scale breeding programs could be advanced.

This requires long-term strategic plans that account for multiple generations of matings to create unique sires that benefit the profitability of our customers. In order to meet this requirement, Select Sires needed to purchase a limited number of females and embryos to create a nucleus of seed-stock that could be uniquely mated to create the next great highly sought-after young sires for the Program for Genetic AdvancementTM (PGATM ). The first of these bulls has recently been sampled and add additional interest to our already successful young sire sampling program.

Two full brothers, 7HO11300 S-S-I Niagra MET-ET and 7HO11301 S-S-I Niagra MATSU-ET, were most recently released as early 7HO8856 Ri-ValRe-2338 NIAGRA-ET sons from the very successful 7HO6782 Ocean-View ZENITH-TW-ET daughter, Melarry Zenith M&M-ET (VG-85-DOM). Whether milk production, longevity, great udders, Net Merit dollar value or Total Performance IndexSM is your personal selection interest, these full brothers have it all. And, they do it without Picston Shottle-ET, Braedale Goldwyn, or 7HO8081 Ensenada Taboo PLANET-ET in their pedigrees. They are excellent examples of the high-quality and unique genetics that the ART program will deliver to our PGA cooperator herds and the Select Sires sire program.

In the future, look for sires that carry the S-S-I prefix as those that were developed within the ART structure. Fast generation intervals will be a common theme to these new additions, so look for early sons from some of the newest and highest ranking proven and high ranking genomic young sires. As always, our passion is in your success, and ART will carry that dedication in its full development for years to come. 

The GPS of Mating Programs: Select Mating Service

by Lon Peters, vice president of dairy sire product services and international Global Positioning System (GPS) devices have become one of the most useful tools for travel and locating destinations that has ever been developed. I purchased one of these GPS devices four years ago, and it was the cheapest one available without all the bells and whistles that I would not use. I soon learned just how useful this tool would become. I no longer need to pull out my Rand McNally Road Atlas to try to find a location and hope it is not where the paper is torn.

With my GPS, I now know exactly how long and how many miles it will take me to make it to an appointment.

This small piece of technology gives me clear, precise directions and saves me time and frustration.

As I think about my GPS, it amazes me how the functionality of this device mirrors the mission of Select Mating ServiceTM (SMSTM). SMS

was built on time savings for our dairy customers and set a clear direction for everyday use. The program was based on input from dairy producers on the direction of their breeding goals, and we provide experienced genetic consultants to help you setup your road map.

One difference that SMS has from the GPS devices is that you do not need to buy a new one when the new and improved units or options are available, as that is part of our dedicated service to you.

The road map is clear for breeding program usage, and it prevents your herd’s genetic program from falling off the beaten path with genetic progress. Inbreeding continues to rise, new recessive genes continue to be discovered, and all this enforces the need for good identification to ensure corrective matings. In addition, new tools like genomic testing provide us greater opportunity to help you get the most from your genetic investment.

To provide your breeding program an insurance policy for genetic improvement, use the genetic road map called SMS. Select Sires provides the most experienced genetic consultant staff in the industry. These professionals are the backbone of the SMS program, which is the most widely used mating program in the

business today. In 2010, more than 4.6 million cows were mated in North America, setting a new record for the program.

Annual SMS Conference In early May, more than 110 professional SMS genetic consultants from Select Sires’ member organizations and 14 different countries met at the annual SMS Consultant Conference, hosted by COBA/Select Sires Inc. The genetic consultants gathered for training to discuss the latest developments in the Program for Genetic Advancement™ (PGA™), new enhancements to the SMS program, and to review innovative technologies and recent trends.

We also viewed progeny of Select Sires’ current lineup and potential graduates throughout northwestern Texas and southeastern New Mexico.

The herds were perfect testimonials to the value of SMS and Select Sires genetics. Consultants viewed over 3,000 identified Select-sired cattle within the 13 herds that we visited.

During the SMS Conference we saw a handful of 7HO9429 RUEBEN daughters, and I was quite pleased by their consistent type pattern. They were moderate-sized cows that were deep and open in the rib. They had nice quality to their shallow udders along with correct teat placement. These RUEBEN daughters also tracked straight on their rear legs with a steep foot angle. Another new release sire that we viewed daughters of was 7HO9443 ENERGY. His daughters spelled milk with extreme width to the rear udder as well as balanced dairy strength and nice depth and spring to the rib.

A very impressive group of cattle sums up our daughter tour! It was so enjoyable to walk behind hundreds of cows and look at the uniformity and soundness they displayed. A few of the bulls I took note of besides all the great 7HO7536 COLDSPRINGs and 7HO7466 MOSCOWs were 7HO9222 SHOT and 7H08914 PERFORM. SHOT daughters were extremely strong, with impressive frames and had the dairy strength to go with it.

The daughters also had outstanding feet and legs and udders. PERFORM is a very reasonably priced bull with over 850 daughters exhibiting style and straightness of lines along with dairy strength. They have impressive rear udders with an extremely defined suspensory ligament.

I was very impressed with the consistency of the 7HO7853 MICHAEL daughters. They were average-sized cows with great udders, but I was most impressed with the feet and legs and the rumps on the cows. Providing the Service That Customers Need NorthStar Cooperative dairy production analyst Julie Ainsworth goes above and beyond the call of duty to serve her customers throughout Michigan. In her role, she serves as a Select Mating ServiceTM (SMSTM) genetic consultant and Select Reproductive SolutionsTM (SRSTM) specialist for her customers.

Ainsworth grew up on a registered Holstein farm in Black River Falls, Wis., and earned a bachelor’s degree in dairy science from the University of Wisconsin – River Falls. After graduation, Ainsworth worked as a herdsperson and then worked in dairy evaluation within the A.I. industry before she joined the Select Sires family in 1987 as a SMS consultant.

In 1998, she added the role of SRS specialist to her résumé, while still serving as a genetic consultant. Three years later, Ainsworth added another role as dairy production analyst, in which she serves as Program for Fertility AdvancementTM (PFATM) coordinator, products team member, records analyst and author of various articles for NorthStar’s newsletter, The Point.

24 Years of Dedicated Service For the past 24 years, Ainsworth has been providing mating recommendations through SMS to her customers. Nearly 15 years ago, she expanded her service in a few herds to include a regular evaluation of the DHI records to identify trends, point out strengths of the farm and key areas of concern to provide recommendations to the farm’s owners.

While SRS was a relatively new Select Sires program at that time, she began providing SRS services to many herds by 1998, long before any of NorthStar’s A.I. competitors offered such assistance. From that point forward, Ainsworth’s career evolved from being a full-time SMS evaluator to that of dairy production analyst.

With herd expansion on the rise, she saw the need for this type of service to analyze records to maximize both milk production and reproduction.

Passionate Within Her Role Altogether, her work touches more than 16,000 cows, and she is a vital component to the success of the

She is often invited to attend farm meetings with the nutritionist, veterinarian and other key players to evaluate the operations of the farm.

Through determination and additional training, Ainsworth developed the necessary skills to work with PC DART, Dairy Comp 305 and Select RePRO AnalysisTM software programs to transform raw data into useful and valuable recommendations for producers.

“I enjoy providing my customers with the tools they need to build successful herds,” commented Ainsworth. “I constantly monitor my SRS herds for any missed opportunities to advance their reproductive program and review my SMS herds to suggest improvements when they are needed.”

Advanced Training Continuing education is an important aspect of Ainsworth’s job. She regularly attends such conferences as the National Mastitis Council, Western Large Herd Dairy Management Conference, Tri-State Dairy Nutrition Conference, Great Lakes Dairy Conference, to name a few. Additionally, she regularly participates in Select Sires’ SMS and SRS annual conferences to receive advanced training.

In 2009, she was named the SRS specialist of the year and the following year was named the SMS consultant of the year.

While Ainsworth’s role is very diverse, she plays a vital role in helping producers achieve results and profitability through her involvement in their reproduction program as well as with their mating program. 

Select Reproductive Solutions Specialists Gather for Training To further develop their skills and expertise, more than 40 professional Select Reproductive SolutionsTM (SRSTM) specialists from Select Sires’ member organizations recently gathered for the SRS Conference held May 16-20, 2011, in Green Bay, Wis. Hosted by NorthStar Cooperative, the four-day conference incorporated both classroom and on-farm training.

“This annual conference allows Select Sires’ SRS specialists to stay on the cutting-edge of research

and practical tools to assist with our customer-owner’s profitability,” stated Dr. Ray Nebel, vice president of technical service programs. “This year marked the second conference held in Wisconsin and enabled our staff members the opportunity to evaluate four outstanding large dairies.”

On farm, the group was divided into eight teams for the Select RePRO Challenge, where the SRS specialists applied their knowledge in evaluating the four large dairies. Following their

analysis of the farms, each team delivered a presentation highlighting areas for improvement and suggestions for making reproductive improvements.

The conference highlighted recent results from the Program for Fertility AdvancementTM (PFATM) studies conducted over the past year. PFA, created by Select Sires to validate fertility potential of novel semen cryopreservation techniques, conducts multiple studies annually to enhance sire fertility.

Select Sires’ advanced estrus

detection technology, Select DetectTM was also a focal point of the conference.

Dr. Edmond Harty, technical director and inventor of the Select Detect system from Dairymaster’s Ireland headquarters, conducted a workshop regarding the system. An additional Select Detect session was led by some of Select Sires’ own Select Detect support staff.
