We admit to not being particularly objective in this matter, but one visit to Charlottesville, Virginia and you will agree with The Times article that extols Charlottesville as the place where “privacy is respected, where Southern gentility, even chivalry still thrives, and perhaps, above all, where the land rolls away toward the mountains in the west with a beauty that snatches the breath at the top of each crest and the bottom of each vale.” It’s what we like to call home. Charlottesville, Albemarle County, and the sur-rounding area, make up Virginia’s Piedmont, which sits at the foot of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in the center of the state. It is here that Thomas Jefferson built his magnificent estate, Monticello, and wrote: “I am as happy nowhere else and in no other society, and all my wishes end, where I hope my days will end, at Monticello.” His friend, James Monroe, came soon after to live at his beloved home of Ash Lawn-Highland. Their memories live on here where Jefferson’s architectural hand is seen at the University of Virginia, and Ash Lawn-Highland hosts operatic productions on sultry summer nights. A quiet, gentle lifestyle lives on as well.

Albemarle At a Glance Population: 102,251 Area: 723 Square Miles Incorporated: 1744 Median Age: 38 Landmarks: Monticello, Ash Lawn-Highland, Michie Tavern Albemarle County was formed by the General Assembly in 1744, and it originally included Amherst, Buck-ingham, Fluvanna, and Nelson coun-ties, much of Appomattox County and part of Campbell County. Its current boundaries were set in 1777. The county was named in honor of the colony’s then governor, William Anne Keppel, second Earl of Albe-marle.

Albemarle is home to President Thomas Jefferson’s estate, Monti-cello, and President James Monroe’s Ash Lawn-Highland, as well as his-toric Michie Tavern. Pine Knot in southern Albemarle was a rendez-vous spot for President Theodore Roosevelt.

Scottsville is its only incorporated town, which sits on the James River in the county’s southernmost point. The Blue Ridge Mountains line the county’s western edge, and the Southwest Mountains Historic District fills much of the eastern half of the county.

The county is facing significant growth in the coming years – in

2014, the county reported a population of 102,259, but officials estimate that number to reach 115,642 by 2020.

County planners are trying to confine development to designated growth areas near the city of Charlottesville and Crozet, about 15 miles west of the city.

By doing so, they hope to retain the rural nature of the majority of its 723 square miles, many of which include farms, vineyards and rolling forested hills.

Charlottesville At a Glance: Population: 43,956 Area: 10.4 Square Miles Founded: 1762 Median Age: 28 Landmarks: Downtown Mall, University of Virginia, The Corner, Barracks Road Shop-ping Center Charlottesville, named after Princess Charlotte, the wife of King George III of England, was founded in 1762 as the Albemarle County seat, replacing Scottsville as the county's center of gov-ernment . Prior to that, the land that would become the village of Charlottesville was owned by Abraham Lewis, Nicholas Meriwether and William Taylor, who received their property through land grants.

Charlottesville was laid out with a 28-

block grid plan with Sixth, Jefferson, and South Streets, and McIntire Road forming the borders.

Thomas Jefferson founded the Uni-versity of Virginia in 1819. It was one mile from the center of town, now known as Court Square.

Charlottesville continued to grow, largely encouraged by railroads and the university. It was formally incorpo-rated in 1888.

In 2014 Orbitz.com rated Charlottesville one of the “Top 5 Destinations Every American Should Visit.” Along with Cntraveler.com who named Charlottesville “ Number 6 Best College Towns for People who Aren’t in College”, due to the historical signifi-cance of the surrounding counties as well as the local activities ranging from the Downtown Mall to Winery Tours.

Augusta County (Including Staunton and Waynesboro) At a Glance Population: 73,912 Area: 968 Square Miles Founded: 1738 Median Age: 39 Landmarks: Skyline Drive/Blue Ridge Parkway, Downtown Staunton, Blackfri-ars Playhouse By the early 1700’s the population along the western seaboard of America was growing steadily, so it was no surprise when people began casting their eyes westward—to the backcountry as it was then called. The western frontier at the time was the Shenandoah Valley, territory that had hardly been explored by European settlers.

On November 1, 1738 an act was passed that carved two Shenandoah Valley counties out of Orange. They were Frederick, named for the Prince of Wales, and Augusta, named for the Princess of Wales. The description of Augusta included the phrase “to the utmost limits of Virginia.” At that time the British Crown claimed all the territory to the Mississippi so that meant Augusta stretched to that river. Technically, of course, there were very few English settlers in the far reaches of Augusta.

Augusta County has a diverse economy. While manufacturing accounts for approximately 30% of the jobs in the County, the governmental, ser-vices, and trade sectors are also very strong.

Agriculture has traditionally been an important part of the County’s economy.

According to the latest Census of Agriculture, there are 1,706 farm in Augusta County cover-ing more than 260,137 acres. Another significant component of the area’s economy is tourism. Attracted by the scenic beauty of the area and the easy accessibility via the interstate system, thousands of tourists visit the area each year.

Buckingham At a Glance: Population: 17136 Area: 584 Square Miles Incorporated: 1761 Median Age:42 Landmarks: Buckingham-Appomattox state Forest, Gene Dixon Memorial Park, Holliday Lake State Park, Horsepen Lake Wildlife Man-

agement Area, Yogaville Buckingham County was formed out of Albemarle County in 1761 and is believed to be named after the Duke of Buckingham, a British position of prestige.

At the heart of the rural county is the town of Buckingham, established by the General Assembly in 1818 and home to the county courthouse, a Virginia historic landmark. The Vil-lage is also home to the county gov-ernment and school administration. Yogaville, a retreat boasting a “full and authentic” Yoga experience for beginners and connoisseurs alike, sits on 750 acres overlooking the James River. Day trippers can visit the LO-TUS, or Light of Truth Universal Shrine, a huge pink and white dome replica of a lotus flower, or stay for a weekend for yoga and meditation classes.

Prospective homebuyers who work in Charlottesville are finding Bucking-ham an affordable alternative to the city or Albemarle County just across the James. With lower taxes, relatively inexpensive land and a peaceful set-ting, the county draws in Northern retirees, as well.

Fluvanna At a Glance: Population: 25,977 Area:287 Square Miles Incorporated: 1777 Median Age: 38 Landmarks: Point of Fork, Historic Down-town Palmyra, Old Stone Jail, Old Court-house, Fork Union Military Academy The 287 Square miles of Fluvanna County are a hot seat for both development and preser-vation. Named after the Ful-vanna River– later named the Rivanna River– Fluvanna grew by 24 percent between 2000 and 2005, making it the 95th fastest-growing county in the country. That doesn’t mean Fluvanna is going to lose its rural beauty anytime soon. The county purchased the 969acre Pleasant Grove in 1994 and has since built several miles of trails, including an equestrian trail and handicap-accessible trails. The property also hosts the county’s new public safety building and is home to a new library and new high school. County Leaders have said the new building will be a benefit to the entire county, providing a place for recreation, community groups and churches.

was formed out of Orange County in 1838 and named after Na-thaniel Greene, a Revolutionary War hero and friend of George Washing-ton. The county long served as a bed-room community for Charlottesville-area workers, but Greene has devel-oped rapidly within the last few years. The 70-acre commercial Rapidan Cen-ter in Ruckersville, and a wastewater plant and water tower were recently built to serve southern Greene County.

King Frederick V of Denmark. It was formed in 1742 from Hanover County and its central location in Vir-ginia placed it amid several historical events from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars.

Jack Jouett left from Cuckoo Tavern for his historic ride on June 3,1781 to Monticello and Char-lottesville to warn Gov. Thomas Jeffer-son and the Virginia Assembly of the approaching British army.

And the largest cavalry batter of the Civil War, the Battle of Trevilian Station, took place in western Louisa in June 1864. that battle included an estimated 13,000 cavalry-men. The town of Louisa is the county’s seat, with a small downtown and a popula-tion of about 1,500.

The town of Min-eral is the county’s only other incorpo-rated town. Louisa has remained largely rural with only 10 percent of the land developed as residential, com-mercial or industrial property. Many historic homes and farmsteads remain amid the rolling hillsides. The area of Zion Crossroads, however, continues to see development of residential com-munities and retail centers.

Madison is named for the family that produced the fourth president of the United States and father of the Constitution, James Madison.

The county was charted more that 214 years ago, after being settled by colonists. However, its earliest history stretches back more than 11,000 years, when the territory served as a crossroads for Paleo-Indians.

In the 1700’s, the royal governor, Alexander Spotswood and the Knights of the Golden Horseshoe also crossed the area.

Before Nelson County became one of Virginia’s most popular tourist desti-nations, the area was home to the Amherst County– named after Virginia’s third governor, Thomas Nelson Jr.– and became a thriving agricultural community, home to tobacco, chest-nut and apple growers. Today, the ap-ple industry and a healthy wine indus-try help draw thousand of visitors to the county each year.

Wintergreen Resort, which began development in 1972, is one of Vir-ginia’s most popular ski and golf desti-nations.

The resort was formed three years after Hurricane Camille devas-tated the county with mass flooding and landslides.

Outdoor lovers also come to Nelson for hikes along Crabtree Falls and the Appalachian Trail or for fishing along the James and Tye rivers. A large sec-tion of Western Nelson is the George Washington National Forest. One of Nelson’s most famous sons, Earl Ham-ner Jr., wrote about growing up in the county during the 1930’s inspiring the successful television series “The Waltons.”

Orange At a Glance Population: 34,689 Area: 342 Square Miles Incorporated: 1734 Median Age: 43 Landmarks: Montpelier, The Wilderness Battlefield, Barboursville Vineyards Orange County was founded in 1734 and named for William IV, the Prince of Orange. Quite a bit of presidential history has occurred within the county.

James Madison, the fourth president of the United States, took up residence at Montpelier. Zachary Taylor, the 12th president, was born at Montebello in 1784. Thomas Jefferson also made his mark on Orange County, designing St. Thomas Episco-pal Church, as well as the home of Gov. James Barbour.

The Battle of the Wilderness, a sig-nificant Civil War engagement, took place in the county in May 1864. It was the first battle between Gens. Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant.
