W

e have been working closely with the charismatic owner of the renowned private La Hacienda El Retiro estate in Churriana, Andalusia, Malaga, Spain over the past years. It is an honor and a privilege that we have bee commissioned to develop the operating concept and the marketing plan for what aims to become Europe’s and one of the world’s leading cultural and nature retreats. A rejuvenated historic ensemble, and until very recently, a well kept secret, this idiosyncratic property is tugged away in the historic private botanical gardens of this legendary royal hideaway a true jewel in the heart of Andalusia.

When the owner decided some time ago to open a part of the property to the public by renovating existing guest villas and various other outbuildings to international 5-star-plus hotel standards, CHC was commissioned to create an overall concept for the integration of a private hotel and spa.

Whilst the retreat will, of course be open to the public, our operating concept has been designed to also integrate a private member club, with an “Artists in Residence” scheme that provides refined cultural entertainment for discerning guests.

By now, all the historic buildings have been carefully and respectfully renovated, and amazing grotto Spa was integrated.

La Hacienda El Retiro, perfectly located in close proximity to Malaga, is a privately owned and prodigiously exclusive property. Independent, inspiring, enveloping, it covers more than 500.000 m2 of pristine botanical gardens. It has a history dating back to the 16th century, which is closely connected to a son of King Felipe IV., the creator of the world renowned Retiro gardens of Madrid.

Successive proprietors included the First and Second Counts de Buenavista and the Seventh Counts de Villalcázar. The present owner, a well respected and highly decorated entrepreneur from the North of Spain, has further developed and perfectly restored both, the park with all its historic fountains, moorish water features, ornamental lakes and scenic walkways, as well as the vast palatial buildings. Approximately eight million Euros were invested some years ago to bring in even more exotic trees and plants from around the globe.

The property was declared ‘Monumento Historico Nacional’ (‘National Historic Monument’), in 1984 and its gardens are listed as Spain’s and Europe’s most attractive. Some of the many impressive

The adjoining Villa del Conde Buenavista houses another nine perfectly appointed cosy rooms, with the soft sheen of polished ‘tadelakt’ and a private communal salon. Opulent French and Spanish styles with original Louis XVI antiques, hand woven carpets and delicate wall tapestry, original paintings will satisfy and surpass expectations of even the most discerning guests.

65 new garden garden duplexes - functional and with ‘new Andalusian minimalism design’ will be added in the new Puertas al Paraíso wing.

More than 9 km of perfectly groomed natural private pathways are ready to be enjoyed by nature aficionados, with unlimited space for meditation, yoga or just for paradisiacal relaxation.

And, of course, bird watching at it’s best, since numerous parrots and other exotic birds, including a colony of flamingos, are enjoying their ultimate freedom on an island inside a lake, surrounded by a tropical jungle. Together with Koi ponds and other bird species of fishes and the carefully maintained ecosystem within the historic Los Jardines de El Retiro, this must be the epitome of premium sustainable-luxury retreat living - not only in Andalusia!

when it all started in MDCLXIX Former owners of the historic Hacienda El Retiro from 1669 to 1791 were four of the most influential personalities of Malaga at that time.

One of them was Fray Alonso de Santo Tomรกs, the illegitimate son of King Felipe IV, the creator of the palace and the world renowned El Retiro Gardens of Madrid.

The estate was always seen as a most prestigious element fort their own enjoyment and to entertain, and they spent considerable funds to furnish it with numerous pieces of art, fountains and water features hidden in the vast gardens.

Fray Alonso de Santo Tomรกs was named Bishop of Malaga in 1664 and died in1692 after 30 years in the episcopate .

Successive residents of Hacienda El Retiro were the Counts of Buenavista and the Counts of Villalcรกcar de Sirga.

Hacienda el Retiro and its gardens are a real jewel and a real luxury for the province of Malaga. They are, in fact, catalogued as ‘The most important Private Gardens in Spain’, comparable even with their Italian counterparts of the Renaissance and Baroque, and they are in remarkable relations with some of the Royal Gardens of Spain.

t all started in the 17th century with a son of King Felipe IV, founder of Madrid’s world renowned El Retiro Gardens‌

Still a National Monument but with all of today’s comforts The property was declared ‘Monumento Historico Nacional’ (‘National Historic Monument’), in 1984 and its gardens are listed as some job Spain’s and Europe’s most attractive. Some of the many impressive large water fountains are under UNESCO Heritage protection.

Order and style of the architecture respond to the two functions that the hacienda has traditionally fulfilled.

With the exception of some scattered buildings, such as the chapel which was designated to be the bishop's tomb let me not be the bishop's tomb, the most important architectural nucleus is arranged around two interconnected courtyards.

All the buildings at EL PRIVÉ have been carefully and respectfully renovated.

Seventeen oversized new guest suites from 100 to well above 200 m2 each have been added and are presently being decorated. Opulent French and Spanish styles with original Louis XVI antiques, hand woven carpets and delicate wall tapestry and original paintings will satisfy and surpass expectations of even the most discerning guests.

The Elephant Tent Features elephant-inspired bathtub fittings and an outdoor shower. A veranda complete with ropes securing the railings runs the entire length of the perch.
