In 1998, SENSES was born as an independent, bilingual - German English - premium magazine out of LADY International, one of the oldest women’s magazines in the German-speaking countries.

LADY International - The magazine for women, was founded in 1950 in Berlin and devoted itself not only to the major international couture fashion such as Chanel and Hermès, but also, and especially, to beauty and SPA. As long ago as the 1950s, LADY International was reporting on Hollywood goddesses, such as Judy Garland and Ava Gardner, who sought eternal youth in Elizabeth Arden’s first beauty farm “Maine Chance”.

The prestigious SENSES Awards have established themselves as a seal of approval. They are representing 15 years of excellence, recognising the „Best of the Best“ in Hotel, Wellness and SPA industry as well as exceptional performance in the field of travel. The annual SENSES Award has long since become a quality certificate, especially as a hallmark of excellence for the Hotel industry as a whole. No doubt this is because when selecting a winner, the editorial team takes the approach of an international jury, evaluating the nominated individual persons, brands, SPAs and hotels according to a number of criteria.

By strictly invitation only and independent from products and brands, international, hand picked members of a high profile jury from around the world and the SENSES editorial staff, are casting their votes for the annual winners from the nominee list of about 500 hotels, resorts, products and SPA Beauty brands from around the globe.

When the SENSES Wellness Awards where first conferred 15 years ago, they were limited to three categories: best beach resort, best country resort and best city resort.

Over the past 15 years the SENSES Award has developed further categories – e.g. Best Medical SPA, Best Organic SPA Product, Best Destination SPA – in addition to the classic hotel categories, in order to also do justice to this rapidly growing industry, technically competently and comprehensively.

And in order to lend weight and authenticity to her mission, she has even auctioned off her jewels as a means of setting an example. SENSES met up with Princess Fay Jahan Ara. Setting an example – this is one of the topics close to the heart of the Princess, for whom being born into a royal family is not a privilege but a duty and a mission that must be fulfilled and lived out. All of her activities have been developed based on this fundamental principle. Princess Fay Jahan Ara is a dynamic and successful business woman and entrepreneur for whom there’s no such word as ‘can’t’. She is the driving force behind a charitable organisation supported not only by Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, the wife of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum of Dubai, but also Prince Albert of Monaco, Her Imperial Majesty Farah Pahlavi, H.R.H. Princess Caroline of Hanover and Bollywood Fashion Designer Manish Malhotra.

The Princess comes from Persian Royality and she spent her school years at a Swiss boarding school where she also met her future husband when she was sixteen. She fell in love not only with the Indian Prince, the great grandson of King Wajid Ali Shah of the Royal Family of Avadh, Lucknow, but also in his country, its people and culture. Their marriage produced a son, Prince Alexander Ali, who today lives in Dubai as a trained lawyer and businessman.

The woman who had everything, who is a noted philanthropist and has studied in the USA and Heidelberg, Germany, and who led a fairytale life, now has just one task: helping others help themselves. “I was desperately saddened when I saw the wretchedness and help-lessness in the streets. I knew immediately that I had to do something to help it was my duty and task.” Therefore she established the RACH (Royal Avadh Cultural and Heritage Foundation) Charity Foundation in 2007. The non-profitable charitable organization aims to support, engage and empower socially and economically underprivileged communities in India by improving their living environment, increasing access to healthcare and education, facilitating social inclusions, and creating opportunities that allow them to build a more sustainable future for themselves. The activities of RACH include practical help such as distribution of blankets and warm clothes of homeless people in Lucknow and Mumbai as well as e.g. the organisation of medical camps in slums and underserved localities in Lucknow to provide medical consultation services to the local communities and to educate them about the need to practice a healthy lifestyle.

After the death of her husband, Princess Fay Jahan Ara returned to Lucknow, the vaunted cultural realm of the Awadhis (it once included Agra and Oudh; the capital today is Uttar Pradesh) and fell in love a second time: this time with the poorest of the poor, to whom she has since devoted all her attention.

Princess Fay always has been thinking globally therefore she is today also the President of the Asian Arab Chamber of Commerce which deals with 52 countries and – among others - she supports the “Women Empowerment Principal”, a UN initiative to guide and support women empowerment.

The Princess is keen to use her popularity and world wide network to raise awareness for children from underprivileged backgrounds and for women subjects which has been on the Princess’ heart for a long time.

“Women must hold together and stand together,” says the Princess, because only when we practice steadfast unity, are women protected against violence, abuse and exploitation.” Once again, the focus here is on helping others. Helping the weak who have no-one to speak on their behalf – this is the Princess’ primary goal. “Only those who are willing and humble can impact the world and initiate change for the better. Anyone who has earned the label “successful” as a description of their achievement must have two sides – a professional side and a social side.”

Does Princess Fay feel like a feminist, we ask her? “No, most definitely not,” comes the clear answer. “Quite the opposite; my engagement for women does not mean I fight for women and at the same time am against men. No, it would be completely crazy if we women thought like that; then we would also have to be against our own sons, since a son will of course become a man at some point. I see my work as being a mediator and builder of bridges between the role of men and the role of women. And an equalising mediation such as this is a very important task today because in the last few decades nothing has changed as much as gender roles. We women have continued to progress and thus many traditions and also values have unfortunately gone off the rails. I see it so often with young people; they have no goals, they don’t know what they want, they have lost the right way or never begun it at all. I think of my mother, my grandmother; they passed on values to me, a system of values. This is important because it makes people strong, stable and gives them direction, especially in difficult times. We women can and should be educated, have jobs and great careers; however a healthy balance of people’s traditional values must also remain.

Only when men and women are in harmony with each other and can pass on a system of values to the next generation can a healthy climate for our youths develop.”

To make a difference in life – that is one of the most favourite words the cosmopolitan Princess says. Any philosophy of life behind this? Oh yes, says Her Royal Highness Princess Fay Jahan Ara with a smile: “From

the time you are born, you are always heading towards the end of your life. You come into this world with an empty hand and you go out with an empty hand. All you have are the relationships and the differences you make to other people.”

His parents had decided to let their children grow up multilingual. So, when Prince Asfa-Wossen Asserate came to study law in Tübingen, he already was fluent in German. Since 2010 he is an Honorary Senator of this traditional university. In 1976, the Prince founded the first human rights organization for Ethiopia and campaigned also for the release of his family held in captivity. In 1978 he received his doctorate of Dr. phil. at the Johann Wolfgang von Goethe University in Frankfurt for a historical dissertation.

To answer the most frequently asked questions immediately: Yes, the author of the book “The Last Emperor of Africa - Triumph and Tragedy of Haile Selassie” is a real “Royal” – SENSES introduces him during his recent book publication (Propyläen, Berlin).

By Agi Neder SENSES: Is it hard for your Imperial Highness, not to live in a royal palace any longer?

Prince Asfa-Wossen: No, why should it?

Knowing ones family imprisoned by revolutionaries for years, one is thankful for a roof over ones head and a bit of blue sky for everyone.

SENSES: You have studied law, history and exonomics in Germany and England. Which subject do you like best?

Prince Asfa-Wossen: I can call myself an author, but I also operated as a business consultant, in Düsseldorf, where I headed the press department of the fair corporation. Since 1981, I have the German citizenship and am allowed to visit my homeland since 1991. My endeavour has always been to support my country of birth. The first company I founded in connection with Ethiopia, takes care of the maintenance and promotion of the Ethiopian culture. This is certainly connected with my traditional origin.

SENSES: And therefore the newest book is about the last Emperor of Africa, your great uncle Emperor Haile Selassie?

Prince Asfa-Wossen: Emperor Haile Selassie was not only the first state visitors, that the World-war battered Germany welcomed in 1954. He was also an important figure of the 20th century. Since I personally knew the Emperor and extensively dealt with the later

history of my country, I thought I was qualified to write about a personality, whose roots lead back to King Solomon. The Emperor was a pioneer of African Unity. He was an ally of the Allies against the fascist Axis powers.

Haile Selassie, King of Kings, was a colorful character. This I have portrayed in my book.

SENSES: Maybe he was less a reformer than an autocrat?

Prince Asfa-Wossen: You mean because he was overthrown and murdered at the end by communist rebels? Read my book. I think there are answers to the fascinating history of my home and it takes the reader at the same time to questions, which today still refer to the wonderful continent of Africa.

SENSES: Let us finally take a look at you as a bestselling author. In 2003, your book “Manners” (Manieren), remains a bestseller until today. Apart from the fact that you are called to tell us how a well mannered person must behave, why has this work become a downright cult book?

Prince Asserate: I think it came at the right time, because 2003 saw precisely start of the discussion of values. Almost daily you could read in the newspaper that the generations showed a lack of tolerance or society experienced a complete loss of values. It appears my book came just at the right time, because it does not lecture, but it shows again the ‘red thread of life’.

SENSES: One last question: When can we expect a new bestseller from you and it will be back to the subject of a historical topic?

Prince Asfa-Wossen: You will understand that I do not even want to talk about it. So much can be said: I have already created a documentation. So a new book is coming...
