New Training Technology at SELCAT

SELCAT is always on the look for the newest and latest in training technology. Not only for our apprentices, but for Journeyman and other classifications. Recently, SELCAT purchased 4 STS Crane Simulators from CM Labs. 3 simulators will be at our Newnan, GA office and the 4th will be housed at our Moore Haven, FL location.

The simulators provide comprehensive training with a wide variety of different options and configurations to meet your training needs. The simulators feature self-guided progressive learning programs, job site re-enactments and much more.

We hope these simulators will be a cutting edge advantage for all learning to operate cranes and to help when the time comes in getting their certifications.

Our crane simulators are not the only new training technology we have added at SELCAT. We are in the final phases of completing the Timpson Trainer. What is a Timpson Trainer you ask? This will allow SELCAT to train apprentices on energized high voltage lines, without the risk!

This will allow more hands on training with energized lines in a controlled setting to help our apprentices learn more about the possible risk and dangers they will face when working on these lines in the field.

IBEW Local 222 has also purchased and installed a Timpson Trainer at the Moore Haven, FL location. We are very excited about all the new things coming to not only our apprenticeship but our industry. These tools will benefit not just apprentices, but Journeymen and other classifications needing training. Keep a watch for training opportunities coming soon!

November 13-19,2023 is National Apprenticeship Week sponsored by the United States Department of Labor Apprenticeship. NAW is an opportunity to celebrate apprentices everywhere and a chance to educate and advocate for registered apprenticeships everywhere. During the week of NAW, SELCAT will be having daily give always. You must sign up to be eligible for the drawings so be looking for how to sign up coming to our social media soon! Also during NAW we will have special daily surprises for the FTS class at our facility! Help us celebrate and spread the word, IT’S NAW Y’ALL!

OFFICE MANAGER

A Day In the Life Of...

MELANIE DINGLER A day in the life of SELCAT’s Office Manager, Ms. Melanie Dingler…….

A typical day at SELCAT for the Office Manager is consumed by handling the day-to-day financial operations of SELCAT. Along with this, I also run the SELCAT online store (https://selcat-merchandise-store.myshopify.com/). The SELCAT online store is where apprentices may purchase their required course material, climbing gear, hand tools, merchandise and more. This entails not only processing orders that are received but tracking inventory to restock items when necessary. I also hold the title of SELCAT’s ADA Compliance Officer. In this position I closely follow ADA regulations to assist with any Applicants or Apprentices that fall under the ADA umbrella. I am responsible for scheduling and setting up all SELCAT’s Board of Trustees meetings as well as taking minutes for these meetings. While I do not get to handle Applicant and Apprentice records as much as I did with my former positions at SELCAT, I still enjoy getting to communicate with Applicants and Apprentices and help where I can.

Depending on the day, you may see me running an Interview Room during Interviews, answering Applicant/Apprentice correspondence in regard to questions and concerns they may have, paying bills, setting up meetings, writing policies and procedures, scheduling maintenance on the buildings, etc. I also retain all records for Journeyman Training that SELCAT provides. I am also currently working on a couple of projects to enhance our Apprenticeship on the office side. In the seven years that I have been at SELCAT, we have seen so much growth in the program. I am excited for this growth and for new things to come that will only make SELCAT better than it is today!!

Storms and Generator Safety It’s Storm Season y’all! We want to make sure everyone stays safe during storm work and outages, and a lot of times people don’t think about generator safety while waiting to get your power restored. Here are a few tips to remember while using and operating your generator this storm season: Always operate the generator according to the manufacturer’s guidelines.

Avoid carbon monoxide poison by NEVER using a generator indoors or in attached garages.

Avoid electrocution by using heavy duty outdoor-rated cords with a wire gauge adequate for the appliances you are plugging in.

Mair sure you have a transfer switch installed to prevent back feeding. Backfeeding can cause a serious threat to service and tree crews working to restore power in your area.
