Requirements to Apply Commercial Class A Driver’s License (CDL) with Air Brakes (Overhead and Underground Only); permits will not be accepted. Minimum Class C Driver’s License at application and must obtain at minimum a Class A CDL before graduating the program (Substation Program Only). All Overhead and Underground apprentices are required to maintain a valid CDL throughout their apprenticeship. All Substation apprentices are required to maintain at minimum a Class C Driver’s License throughout their apprenticeship. upon graduation all Substation apprentices MUST obtain a minimum Class A CDL. Copy of DOT physical/card.

High School Transcript (through last grade completed) Diploma or GED. If submitting a GED, test scores must be included. High School Transcripts through the last grade completed are still required.

Must show evidence of successful completion of: one full credit of high school algebra with a passing grade, or one post high school algebra course (e.g., Adult Education, Continuing Education, Community College, etc.) with a passing grade, or provide evidence of having successfully completed the NJATC/ETA Online Tech Math Course.

DD214, if you are a Veteran. DD2384, if you are in the Reserves.

Residency in SELCAT jurisdiction.

Access to a computer with internet connection and a valid email address. This will be required throughout the duration of apprenticeship. $25.00 application fee. Debit/credit cards will be accepted, and an application fee must be paid at the time application is made online.

How does the Apprenticeship Work?

What is SELCAT?

After being accepted from your interview, based on the score the Interview Committee gave you, you will be placed on a "Pending" list. Depending on the number of new job calls we receive each week, you will be contacted by SELCAT to "begin" your apprenticeship.

Registered Apprenticeship with the United States Department of Labor Apprenticeship Co-Sponsored Organization with NECA and the IBEW, along with the Electrical Training Alliance Not A Lineman College! You get paid while you learn a skilled trade from a Journeyman.

WORK You will be put to work with a NECA Contractor making IBEW wages in the area the work is being done, learning first hand on the job from a Journeyman.

Classroom Work While learning on the job, you will also have non-compensated classroom learning. Online or in the classroom.

Training State of the art training from Journeymen in the trade now helping to teach the next generation of Journeyman for our trade.

How long does the Apprenticeship take?

The Overhead Lineman Program requires 7,000 total hours of On-the-Job training which takes about 3 to 3 1/2 years to complete. The Substation Technician program is also 7,000 hours of On-the-Job training. SELCAT also has an Underground Technician program. The URD program requires 4,000 hours of OJT training and takes about 2 years to complete.

While working and learning in the classroom, along with top wages in the industry, you and your covered dependents receive Medical, Dental, Vision, etc. through LINECO. You also receive contractor paid retirement and pension. NO COST FOR BENEFITS COME FROM YOUR WAGES. The benefits are fully funded by the NECA Contractors you work for.
