This is what the Telephone Campaign is all about – reconnecting Selwyn Alumni with the College, via our current students, and keeping our community strong.

In last year’s Telephone Campaign, our alumni showed that the Selwyn community is one of the strongest and most supportive in Cambridge, by quite some margin.

Our 12 students immensely enjoyed hearing about what life can offer after Selwyn.

As a result of our subsequent investment in teaching and student support, Selwyn continues to punch well above its weight academically, and remains one of Cambridge’s most socially accessible Colleges.

Selwyn is now able to support many of its students via Bursaries, Scholarships, Sports Grants, Travel Grants, ad hoc Hardship Support – the list goes on. This has all been made possible by the generosity of our alumni and we greatly appreciate your help.

Many of my friends depend solely upon financial support from the College. It enables the best and most academically able students to come to this great university, regardless of their background.

The Telephone Campaign is your chance to speak with fellow Selwynites who are currently studying at the College. 15 of our current students will spend 15 days in December and January telephoning the College’s alumni in order to give you an update on life at the College, both academic and social, and to let you know what our priorities are for the coming months and years. It is also your chance to let our students know about how you found life at Selwyn while you were here, what life has held for you after you graduated, and whether you might be able to help to support the College’s future success.

Cath Elliston (SE 2012) English We were fortunate enough to graduate from Selwyn at a time when grants were available for full fees and maintenance. We decided to support the College’s bursary scheme to ensure that it remains a place where any deserving young person can receive a world-class education – without being discouraged by concerns about funding their studies.

I’ve received the Cambridge Bursary for three years here, and I can honestly say I wouldn’t be able to have done half the things I’ve done here without it. It’s a fantastic scheme which really made me feel that Cambridge was committed to helping me be here to learn.

Heather McKay (SE 2012) Land Economy As both a Director of Studies and Tutor, I have seen the way that financial help from Selwyn has benefitted my students. It has allowed them to focus on their studies free from financial worries and to benefit more from what Selwyn has to offer.

Selwyn College came into existence thanks to the philanthropy of its founders.

Their spirit of handing the ladder back down to help the next generation has pervaded the College’s history and, in these times of uncertainty surrounding the funding of Higher Education, is now more important than ever.

Since the increase in tuition fees in 2012, each new intake of students now faces a bill for their education and living expenses of £16,000 every year. That means that most Selwyn students will graduate with almost £50,000 of debt, and some on longer courses will face still more.

At Selwyn, and throughout Cambridge, means tested bursaries provided by our Student Support funds are given to their recipients in the form of a reduction in tuition fees for each term. This goes some way towards reducing the financial burden on our students.

We hope that you will consider supporting the College to help us to ensure that, whatever their social background or financial means, the brightest young people are still able to come to Selwyn College and flourish in every sense. We look forward to talking to you!
