The project is located in the Ethiopian institution of architecture and building construction campus [EiABC] as an extension platform for the main library.

The intention behind this book store is to make it a hub of the campus and assist the students by supplying up-to-date books and research materials.

The building accommodates two main programs which are the retail part that’s located on the ground floor and the temporary reading space found on the first floor so that customers can examine the materials they’re purchasing.

The design approach focuses on integrating the concept and the contextual matter encountered. In the design process vertical and horizontal louver structures are used to solve the issues caused by the harsh afternoon sunlight entering the interior space. The sun breakers/louvers are designed to allow sunlight to pass through them in a controlled manner, the structural form is generated by combining the results found from the sun path experiment and the concept of an opening book.

The notion behind this facade is to experiment and create rainbow projections on the interior space so that it would generate a stimulating effect on the brain of the customers.

The first layer of the facade system must be translucent,just enough amount of sunlight to illuminate the room and at the same time to focuse the sunlight to hit the prisms on the desired spots.The second layer is fixed with dispersive prisms that are made with a pyramidal shape.The material used for the prism is flint glass because it has a higher refractive index .

The angle of refraction is dependent on the refractive index of a certain material, it also depends on the wavelength of light travelling through it so this effect occurs when the different wavelength of light travels at different speed.

This shows the movable and non-movable part of the facade system, the movable one can slide upto 50cm.As the prism layer of facade moves away from the perforated layer the rainbow effect created decreases because the sun rays hitting the prism are not focused.

Concept synthesis The Araxie gallery is an art and sculpture gallery that’s conceived as a hub for art-lovers and links dierent cultural programs.The project is inspired from the interaction of water in relation to the prevailing wind.The tide accompanied by the air as a driving force sculpts the water into an interesting space.

As a conceptual massing approach an analysis was made to study the patterns and the scenes created by the water movement.The project then evolved into this interesting structure by integrating the conceptual mass developed from the analysis with the spatial and functional qualities required for the program.

EXPERIMENT ON BUILDING ENVELOPS

RE-FRACT The name of the facade is a merge between Recyclying (one of the concepts in the design) and Refracting which was essential to the effect of the Light and Shadow research. RE (Recycle) - FRACT (Refraction).

The 1:1 prototype features 6 modules. five of them are not openable while one is an opening module.

It has 54 bottles of which 18 are jars and the rest are wine bottles.

It is supported by a metal structure and the thickness of the concrete panels is 2.5cm.

opening detail The opening on the facade is made by rotating one of the recycled glass and concrete panel modules along its central axis.

A connecting pin is ďŹ xed both on the top and the bottom. on the top the pin is used to suspend the module so that it becomes easier to rotate, and on the bottom it is used to keep it from moving sideways.

There are guides that are ďŹ xed on the frames, this is done in order to control the rotation and to make it in one direction.

1. diameter 1.6cm CHS 3cm long used to keep the bolt from reaching the top and damaging the top side of the frame as it suspends the panel.

2. diameter 8mm bolt 5cm long welded to the module under the top frame and is used to suspend the module to enable easy rotation.

La capannina The restaurant is located on the ground floor of a multistorey building having a total area of 364 Msq, and contains all the basic programs like, reception, bar/dining area and kitchen with all its necessary equipment’s and adequate storage space in addition the restaurant upholds a stage for pianists and jazz performers.In this project I worked with the interplay of artificial lighting and texture of materials in an attempt to create the elegant look.

The suspended rectangular forms on the ceiling along with the chandeliers are found at different elevations giving the impression of gravity defiance. The chandelier’s being at different elevations gives a striking dining area illumination. The rectangular forms on the ceiling are hanging with a mechanism of tension cables, Adding contrasting color made the hanging forms look floating and detached from the false ceiling. The spotlights and chandelier’s used around the bar/dining area generates warm incandescent light to adapt to the texture and color of the material used to decorate the space.

The creation of this unique stage is governed by the design of the lighting system giving emphasis on the grand piano making the scene splendid both for the performer and the audience. The metal halide bulb lighting system causes the background of the stage to glimmer creating an optical abstract.

Fine wood texture in a brick pattern with a good acoustics

Accent lighting system Projector lighting system for the stage wall cladding with zebrano wood texture introducing a natural look to the dining area.

This speciďŹ c wall is decorated with double cladding materials having 3cm air gap b/n them, frosted glass as a base material and polarized glass cut in to a wave like patterns as a foreground the former assists in creating a decorative part on the other side of the wall which is the reception area and the latter reects some part of the scene that is going around in the dining area as part of an abstract.

This writing is a quote found in a QUR’AN also expressing the “SHAHADA”.

The design manifests islamic calligraphy to its simplest geometric forms.

Materials used include plexiglas and metal pins as a connection mechanism.
