2022 IIDA Student Design Competition

Promenade is a behavioral health clinic that focus on outpatient service for substance abuse patients, and those with mood and anxiety disorders.

The Promenade experience is intended to extend beyond a physical place. The Promenade space inspires an adventure-like experience; users who enter the space are encouraged to grow, progress, and heal as one does on a walk besides a body of water. Like a waterfront promenade, one should enjoy both the present and look forward to the next. One should also look back to these experiences with happiness and sentimental affection.

Incorporating biophilia, sustainability, and modern appeal, the clinic hopes to bring a prolonged positive experience for users that lasts more than their health visit experience, encouraging them to "heal"outside of their designated clinical space. The interior elements steer away from a typical hospitality type of environment; warm tone lights, de-commercialized design, and centralized play and interaction, encourages a sense of "homeful"ness where patients are evoked with a sense of security and comfort.

The incorporation of greenery was a staple because of its scientifically proven healing effect on patients. In the curving points of the center path, there are points of interest spaces that allow for users to healthily break in their expedition. These spaces have a seating area as well as visually stimulating elements like TVs and unique greenery.

Space Planning

Patient interaction rooms are all placed on the outermost rooms for maximized natural lighting and greenery A curved path and points of interests in the floor plan circulation support movement and momentary breaks (healthy positive distractions and reflections) for all users.

Placement of the rooms encourages younger patients individualism and self exploration while navigation throughout the space and on the journey home as well

Purse minimum walking distance to reduce staff fatigue and improve patient flow by anaylzing the desired proximity of each space.

The two specialities are separated and located on each side of the clinic. The patients will be naturally guided by the floor plan as they move between rooms

FF&E The Promenade design supports the design goal of sustainability with our FF&E and materials being recylced and locally sourced.

The furnitures are selected from OFS or Carolina. They are closely related to nature, community, and well being.

All upholstery if OFS, manufactured by Maharam.

Waiting Area The curved wooden ceiling present dynamism and stimulations for users when they enter the space.

The LED strip lighting enhances warmness and comfort of the space while aligning with the spaces's color palette of orange, yellow, and green.

The large and playful waiting area allows for users of all ages to interact with each other and the space in explorative ways. With a variety of leveled seating, sizes, and placements, users can group to their desired area and prepare for their consultations.

The curvature within the space develops a sense of journey along the Promenade.

Healing Garden

Seatings are surrounded with greenery and there is a walkway which gives a sense of people walking along a promenade

The healing garden is an outdoor retreat for patients, family, and staff. In some cases, it may also be used for small group consultations.

Outpatient Clinic There is direct access to sunlight and nature through the large windows.

Patients can get comfortable in the floor carpet seatings with bean bags

It is a "living room" area where a patient works to achieve recovery goasl with their doctors, therapist, or counselor. A family member may join the session.

Small Therapy Room

The calming paitings and materials used in the room will comfort the patients

Patients will connect to others and work together to achieve their recovery goals.

MANNATEE is our vision for the redesigned Mann Cafe.

It is derived from our extensive research of the design and stakeholder experiences within the current space.

Our improved spatial design aims to improve efficiency of both customer and staff paths of movement. We weaved the MANNatee brand concept throughout our space, and highlighted artwork from Glyphe, a local artist we found inspiration from when creating our design.

Research Inefficient flow in the space because people are moving around the space to grab food from both sides of the cafe.

The line to order at the center counter not only disrupts the flow of customers getting foods, but also the people who are sitting in the table.

The solid yellow line shows an instore order customer as they choose grab & go items, order at the counter, wait & pick up their food, and then leave without entering the seating space.

The dashed brown line shows in-store order customers who sit and enjoy their food at MANNatee.

The solid dark brown line shows a mobile order customer walking to the GET pick up counter and leaving the store. This customer path has minimal intersection with in-store order customers.

Parallel fabric baffles along the ceiling, sound is both absorbed by the material and caught between the baffles.

Protruding wood elements from the ceiling reflect a significant amount of noise emanating from the kitchen and dining areas.

FF & E

Branding We were inspired by manatees because of how they embody a relaxed and restful lifestyle with their graceful movement, which students in the library can find calmness in. Manatees also travel alone or in small groups, similar to students at Mann. Lastly, they are a vulnerable species that can be given increased awareness through a CALS partnership with this cafe.

Artist Showcase Wall Our artistic inspiration comes from a local artist, Audrey Bayle, who is known professionally as Glyphe. Glyphe is a trained architect, originating from France, and a selftaught artist.

Just as an apple tree thrives from cross-pollination, Liberty Hyde Bailey's cottage will thrive from a multi-dimensional approach to historic preservation and contemporary interpretation. Through a curated display of artifacts and descriptive historical signage within the cottage's interior, visitors will experience Bailey's life in its authentic, natural setting. As visitors discover life in the 1900s, the hope is that they will learn from and appreciate Bailey's legacy and then apply that knowledge and experience to their own lives.

1st Floor Based on the blocking diagram, we created a floor plan which incorporates a furniture layout in the space.

This layout represents how user's needs will be supported by the furniture placement. Since each piece is moveable, the first floor can also be used for functions such as group meetings and social gatherings for the Girl Scouts.

2nd Floor The second floor will be used for overnight stays for up to four guests.

Each twin bed has a night stand or storage in close proximity in this limited floor plan.

To provide a separate reading area, this small lounge can be used by guests wanting more privacy before going to sleep.

Cirriculum Sheet for the Camp Comstock

We have created a cirriculum sheet that relates the work of Bailey to the lives of the individual girls and their entire Girl Scout troop. Sheets, which will be available to troop leaders, will include historical information about Liberty Hyde Bailey, how his work connects to the GIrl Scout mission and nature in generl, and a hands-on activity (e.g. planting apple trees, learning from a local beekeeper).

The goal of this project was to renovate south side of Human Ecology Building and complete a comprehensive set of construction document.

Based on student interview, the biggest problem in the existing building was the lack of community space. Students occupying HEB are usually student majoring in Fashion Design or Design and Environmental Analysis. They responded that they would like a space to relax and get snacks when they are working in their studio, especially in the night. Students also pointed out that exisiting Design library is not easily accessible due to its location in another building.

Additionally, this project hoped to include a new photo room to provide students who wish to take photographs of their projects.

This renovation construction document was created to meet the building codes and ADA compliant while meeting all the desired design.

The drawings above was provided by Stewart Hollenstien. The proposal design was based off their construction document and drawings.

AutoCAD drawings and Rhino Modeling for a facade design proposal.

The drawings show how the connection can be made with the vertical rails and the horizontal Terracotta louver.

To reduce the expense, we proposed a prefabricated rails and prefab connections that allows each Terracotta louver to be adjusted to create the irregular facade.
