here are certain things we don't think much about until we're given a reason to. We move through our days with plenty of things demanding our attention, and it can be surprisingly easy to put our health and wellness somewhere near the bottom of the list. October has a way of bringing one particular part of that conversation to the surface. Pink ribbons begin appearing everywhere, and the words breast cancer awareness become difficult to miss. But while putting together this issue, I started thinking about what awareness actually means. Most of us are already aware that breast cancer exists. We know the ribbons. We know the month. We probably know someone whose life has been touched by it. But knowing of something and knowing about it aren't quite the same thing. Awareness is knowing that breast cancer doesn't look the same for everyone. It's understanding that it can affect people we might not expect. It's knowing what screenings are available, when to talk to a doctor and what changes in our bodies deserve our attention. It's having information before the moment comes when we suddenly need it. And maybe that's where the word awareness earns its place. It isn't about spending one month thinking about breast cancer and then moving on. It's about making information familiar enough that we're more likely to recognize when something matters. It's asking questions even when we're a little uncomfortable asking them. It's paying attention to our bodies and making room for our own health among all the other things that compete for our time. There is plenty in these pages that I didn't know before we began putting this issue together. I suspect there will be something here you didn't know either.

LONGTIME 4-H LEADER GAIL DAMERAU OPENS UP ABOUT HER JOURNEY WITH BREAST CANCER, RECOVERY AND EARLY DETECTION.

STORY BY ABBEY SHULTZ PHOTOS BY VICTORIA GAYTAN

ail Damerau likes to be busy. She is a part of many 4-H committees and programs, she is secretary for the Tri County Antique Tractor Pull Association and is very involved with the community. Damerau was born and raised in Seguin. After graduating Seguin High School, spending some time in college and meeting her husband at the Guadalupe County Fair. After the two married, she moved to Marion, where he grew up. Damerau was in FFA and the Seguin 4-H club growing up, and later continued on community boards where she advocated for kids in the 4-H program.

“I’ll bleed green and navy blue any time,” she said, referring to the program’s storied color scheme. Later on after her daughter was born, Damerau helped start up the Santa Clara 4-H club in 2013. Her daughter was president of the club, she pursued agriculture after high school as well, and now works in soil conservation. Damerau is still an adult leader for the Santa Clara club, she co-leads, and said she always wanted someone else to be a leader with her. She is still involved in multiple programs and committees, like the youth show and fair. She also helps with school tours before each fair, where nearby schools bring students to go through different stations on the grounds. “I have a great love for 4-H,” Damerau said. “My parents put me in 4-H when I was young and I never looked back. 4-H has always been in my life and I never quit.” In 2025, Damerau was delivered a blow in 2025 that could make even the most resilient person think about giving up. She learned she had breast cancer. And instead of throwing in the towel, Damerau stuck to her never quit attitude and battled through it all. The diagnosis process was the beginning of many times of waiting, she said. After a trip with her husband, she got the results of a biopsy and jumped right into treatment and then prepared for surgery just before the holiday season. Having been in the medical field selling medical supplies for the last 32 years helped Damerau feel knowledgeable about some of the things that come with treatment. She said, ‘yes’ to offers from her insurance company to speak to nurses or join support groups. She also learned from another woman going through treatment how to advocate for herself after chemo treatments by requesting IV treatments. Damerau wanted to make sure she got the best healthcare opportunities available, she said. “One of my things was, I’m not done living,” Damerau said. “I’m not done with these 4-H kids, I’m not done with the youth show and all the kids 12 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING

showing, I’m not done. I want to see my daughter married, I want to see grandbabies, I’m not done yet.” A few months before Damerau’s battle with breast cancer began, she helped throw a fundraiser to support a friend battling Stage IV breast cancer. Then, her family and friends stepped up to organize a fundraiser for her, too, during her treatment. It meant a lot, she said. “I have a lot of good friends, I have a lot of great family who supported me and were willing to do anything,” Damerau said. The support and presence of others who had experience with breast cancer was helpful throughout her treatments, she said, because even though everyone has a different experience, there is a different level of understanding those who have gone through it can offer. “I’ve had a lot of other women that have shared their stories with me, answered my questions and just been there for me,” Damerau said. “And it’s nice to have that. And anyone reading my story, I would want them to find me, too. I can be your resource, your support, anything, I can help.” She is not afraid to tell her story, she said. Damerau encourages anyone to get mammograms and to do everything for early detection. “It’s important to not ignore your health, your body, and what your body signals to you,” she said. Genetic testing to look for family history or chances of cancer was something important to her as well. It can show cancer risk in family genetics. She wanted to make sure other women in her family would be prepared to take measures toward early detection, Damerau said. Now, she is in physical therapy following the double mastectomy she underwent a few months ago. While it can be difficult to stay patient throughout the process, she said it is going well. “It’s getting there, it’s in different chapters, and some are good and some are bad,” Damerau said. “The paragraphs and those in between that I’ve had people help me with … just all these blessings.” 14 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING

Mammogram GRMC MAMMOGRAPHER LUBY BAILEY KNOWS FIRSTHAND THE DIFFERENCE EARLY DETECTION CAN MAKE.

or many women, the thought of scheduling a mammogram is accompanied by hesitation. Some worry it will be painful. Others are anxious about what the results might reveal. Still others simply put it off, adding it to a growing list of responsibilities. At Guadalupe Regional Medical Center, Lead Mammographer Luby Bailey hopes to change that conversation. “I appreciate you doing this because it’s definitely an important thing to get out there,” Bailey said. “A lot of women are still afraid to get a mammogram.” Bailey has worked at GRMC for 13 years. She began her career in X-ray before earning her mammography certification in 2015, and today leads a close-knit imaging team that includes mammographers Kelli Kortz and Jennifer Sanchez, along with Yvonne Bijarro, who also performs mammograms in 16 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING

addition to CT imaging. Together, the team performs 15 to 35 mammograms each day, serving women from their early 30s into their 90s. “We typically see patients anywhere between 30 to 92,” Bailey said. “Those patients in their 90s usually have a personal history of breast cancer, so they’re still coming in for their follow-up screenings.” As Seguin and the surrounding communities continue to grow, so has the need for breast imaging services. Bailey said the department has expanded over the years to keep pace with the area’s increasing population while continuing to provide both mammography and bone density exams. One advantage Bailey believes sets GRMC apart is the ability for patients to receive much of their care in one location. While many hospitals now rely on remote radiologists, GRMC continues

to have radiologists available on-site. That means patients needing diagnostic imaging can often complete multiple steps of the process without traveling elsewhere. “If you’re having pain or you’re feeling a mass, you can come in for a diagnostic mammogram,” Bailey said. “The same day, you can get that mammogram, you can get an ultrasound and you can talk to the radiologist. They’ll tell you what they see and if they have any recommendations.” If additional testing such as a biopsy is needed, Bailey said patients can also have that procedure performed at GRMC with an in-house radiologist. “We pride ourselves on that,” she said. “We’re able to get all of those things done here in one place.” For women scheduling a routine screening, Bailey also hopes to ease another common fear: the exam itself. While mammograms still require compression to produce clear images, she said today’s technology has made the experience significantly more comfortable than many people expect. “Our machines have gotten much better over the years,” Bailey said. “We have flex paddles that conform to the breast a little bit more and, because we have 3D technology, it doesn’t need to be compressed as much.” She said many first-time patients leave surprised by how quick and manageable the appointment is. “By the end of it, they’re like, ‘What? That’s it?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, that’s it,’” Bailey said with a laugh. “More often than not, my patients are like, ‘People have been lying to me.’” Most routine screening mammograms take only five to seven minutes for established patients without implants, while first-time visits generally take around 15 minutes to allow time for medical history and registration. “Our job is positioning and trying to get you in the exact position that we need for optimal images for the radiologist to read,” Bailey said. “We can always adjust the compression, adjust your position and work with you.” 18 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING

For Bailey, encouraging women to stay current on screenings isn’t just part of her profession. It’s deeply personal. In 2019, her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 59. Because the cancer was detected early through routine screening, treatment was straightforward. “We were able to catch her cancer super early,” Bailey said. “She had her lumpectomy, had some radiation treatments and now she’s cancer free.” Working in breast imaging helped Bailey understand what to expect throughout her mother’s treatment, easing some of the fear that often accompanies a diagnosis. “I was always hounding her to make sure she got a mammogram every year,” she said. That experience reinforced what she now tells every patient. “The benefits outweigh the risks 100%,” Bailey said. “Yes, it is still radiation that the machine puts out, but it’s very minimal. If it’s something we can catch early, it’s very beneficial because it’s so treatable.” Although breast cancer is far less common in men, Bailey noted that GRMC also performs mammograms for male patients when medically necessary. The department also continues its community outreach through its annual Mammos and Mimosas event, where women can tour the imaging department, meet radiologists, visit health vendors, ask questions and become more familiar with the screening process in a relaxed setting. Ultimately, Bailey hopes every woman understands that scheduling a mammogram doesn’t have to be intimidating. “It’s not anything to be so afraid of that you never get it done,” she said. “Definitely check it out. Hopefully your technologist will be a good one.” For Bailey and her team, that reassurance is just as important as the images themselves. Every appointment is an opportunity to provide answers, offer comfort and, when necessary, catch breast cancer early — when treatment has the greatest chance of success. 20 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING

Seguin man then in his 70s never considered the pain he felt in his chest would turn out to be caused by a disease he thought was relegated to women. Delfino Lopez, now 83, said he had been lifting weights about 10 years ago when he started to experience discomfort in his chest. He thought he had pulled a muscle exercising but his daughter convinced him to have a doctor take a look, Lopez said. What medical professionals discovered caught him by surprise, he said. 24 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING

“They gave me some tests and said I had (breast) cancer. I don’t know, I just freaked out,” Lopez said. “I didn’t know (men could get it). But when I went for the radiation at (the hospital), there was a lot of men in there getting tested for breast cancer.” It’s likely that Lopez wasn’t alone in thinking breast cancer only happens to women. The disease is particularly rare in men, according to the American Cancer Society website. “Breast cancer occurs mainly in women, but men can get it, too,” the

website states. “Many people do not realize that men have breast tissue and that they can develop breast cancer.” Fewer than 1% of breast cancers in the United States occur in men, according to the American Cancer Society’s website. The society estimates that about 2,670 men in 2026 in the United States will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. About 530 men will die from breast cancer this year, the society estimates on its website. Information is key, and understanding that the suspected pulled muscle could be anything, family members helped convince Lopez to seek a medical opinion, his daughter Leticia Machado said. She gives advice to others as she did her father about 10 years ago, Machado said. “Check yourself. Don’t let it slip by,” she said. “If I didn’t push him, he would’ve just kept thinking it was a pain and a pulled muscle. Be proactive about your health. It’s as simple as going in and taking an exam.” Men can get diagnosed with breast cancer at any age, but risk increases as men get older, according to the American Cancer Society. The average age of diagnosis in men is 60 to 70 years old, the society said. That’s very close to the time Lopez said he received his diagnosis. He went through a surgery, and chemo and radiation therapy to rid his body of the cancer, Lopez said. He took a pill for about five years that altered his mood, but he’s off of that and feeling like a new man, the 82-year-old survivor said. “I’d say a good five years I’ve (felt) pretty well,” Lopez said. “I could be talking to you and all of a sudden, I’d go, ‘Oh!’ It just hit me all of a sudden.” But that is the past and Lopez is back to living life with his family cancer free. Things might have been rough for a while but now, the Seguin resident says: “I feel good all over.” And that’s the best prognosis any in his position can ask for. 26 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING

But the citizens of Seguin can be very thankful for her unique approach to improving the community. “I really enjoy event planning and I look for places that offer those opportunities and if I can’t find any, I make them for myself,” Henze said. A resident of Seguin for the last 14 years having moved from Arizona, Henze held several jobs before finding her niche. “I had been working at the Aumont in the bistro. I ended up talking to Danny (Daniels) at the Palace Theatre because I wanted him to air a showing of ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ to coincide with the film’s 50th anniversary,” Henze said. “Danny was hesitant. I told him that if we didn’t make his money back, I’d cover the difference. So, he said, let’s do it and it just brought the Palace back to life. Then we had a cast contact us and ask us if we had a cast for the show. We asked them what they charged and they said they did it simply for the love of the show. They ended up 28 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING

loving it so much that they wanted to make the Palace their home theater.” A relationship was forged and the Palace had a new champion ready to fight for its revival. Henze manages contracts for events and she and Daniels now work together to bring events to the Palace that generate interest and excitement for the historic theater. “We did ‘Elf ’ last Christmas. The kids came in and they got free hot cocoa, cookies, caps, snowflakes and letters to Santa,” she said “Then we showed the movie and Santa was there afterward. It was just a really fun holiday event.” Henze has been active in trying to get the Palace to utilize all its wonderful attributes, not only as a movie theater but also as an event center. “We don’t just show movies. They are all interactive,” she said. “We just showed ‘JAWS’ and we had a trivia contest running before it. We had a group come in that put on a play called ‘The Shark Is Still Broken’ about the making of ‘JAWS’ and how the shark never worked.” Other recent showings included a “Twilight” event and “Smokey and the

Bandit” that included a car show. For Henze, singing the praises of the Palace comes naturally. She is a gifted speaker in advocating for Seguin’s century-old landmark. “It really just has been about trying to keep that theater going because it is such a landmark for the community. Sometimes we see older people walking by looking at the theater and we just open the doors and ask them if they want to come in. They will often say how they remember coming here as a kid or with their parents and they have such memories of the place,” she said. “I learned so much just from the community. The challenge is always in getting the word out. We just got a new projector so we can stream things now. Plus, it is an actual silver screen that is in use.” Henze has always been dedicated to making life better in her community. She sees a need and she focuses on it. Sometimes even ideas born from personal interests turn into something special in her hands. “I used to own a Jeep and I always wanted to start a Jeep club. So, I just got online and started a Jeep club. We were

Seguin Jeepers. We did something called the Wheels For Vets where we would take veterans out in our Jeeps out in Marble Falls,”she said. In 2020, they held a parade for students who didn’t get a chance to formally graduate due to COVID. People brought gifts for the kids. The group continued with other events, Henze said. “We did a homecoming for a soldier coming home from Afghanistan. The thing that I remember was really special was when we heard about a little girl in Killeen who had cancer, who just loved Jeeps,” she said. “So, we got a Jeep run together to just ride by her house. She sat there on the front porch and there were probably about 3,000 Jeeps that drove by her house and left her with flowers and little gifts or whatever. People heard about her and they just came out in droves from all over the country. It was touching. It was one of those things that makes you want to do good things for other people all of the time.” Henze has a simple philosophy that governs her efforts. “Kindness matters so much. If 30 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING

people would just be kind to other people, it can change things. And it is not hard to be kind,” she said. Aside from her self-propelled efforts, Henze has also held formal positions within the community, having served on the Main Street Advisory Board where she helped write shortterm rental ordinances. Later, her work on the Short Term Advisory Committee contributed to the installation of bathrooms in the public square. “You have no idea how long it took for us to come up with the location for those bathrooms. There was a lot to it from going down to the site to compare the colors of the bricks to make sure they matched the gazebo to making sure it was in a convenient location,” Henze said “It was ridiculous that there was no place in downtown for bathrooms. It was just like, we saw a need and we worked on addressing it.” Currently, Henze is working on an upcoming project for which she has high hopes. Henze is organizing a Roper Romp in honor of the character from the popular 1970’s sitcom “Three’s Company.”

“Mrs. Roper and she would wear these very colorful caftans with clunky jewelry and sunglasses,” she said “She was loud and she was fun. So they do these pub crawls where everyone dresses up like Mrs. Roper. Everybody pays in a little bit, but all the money gets donated to specific charities. We are going to go around town to raise money for Thriving Hearts Family Crisis Center, which is a domestic violence shelter. Donations are welcome.” This event in Seguin is slated to take place during Pecan Fest on Oct. 24. Henze moves from idea to idea like a hummingbird stuck on fast forward. But the Palace remains a project that has staying power in her heart. “I have a tendency to come up with an idea, stick with it for a while then move on to something else. That is my ADHD brain, I suppose. But that is why I love the Palace Theatre because it is just so full of possibilities,” she said “We have the movie screen, the stage, the parking lot across the street where we can have car shows and festivals. There is just so much that can be done at that location.”

FOR JUDITH CASTRO-ESTRADA, A LIFELONG LOVE OF CREATIVITY TOOK ON NEW MEANING DURING HER BREAST CANCER JOURNEY.

rt can be more than something we create. For some, it can be a form of self expression, a way to connect with others or a way to process emotions that can sometimes be difficult to put into words. For Judith Castro-Estrada, art has always been a way to explore her creativity and express herself. What began as a childhood love of creativity gradually deepened, eventually becoming part of her healing journey. Castro-Estrada has developed a meaningful connection to Seguin, a community where she connects with

others, becomes involved in local activities and watches her daughters grow and pursue their own passions. She appreciates the city’s strong sense of community, history, creativity and local talent. Being part of Artist Alley gives her an opportunity to share her creative side with a community that supports local artists. Castro-Estrada describes herself as a creative and expressive artist who enjoys bringing ideas, emotions and imagination to life. She does not believe art has to fit into one specific style or category. Instead, she values the freedom

to explore, learn and create something meaningful and authentic. As she grew older, her relationship with art changed. What began as something she enjoyed simply because it was fun became a place where she could slow down, reflect and reconnect with herself. “What once felt like a hobby gradually became a form of expression and, eventually, part of my healing journey,” Castro-Estrada said. Her experience with breast cancer brought another layer of meaning to that relationship. During a period filled with uncertainty, emotions and reflection, creativity became a space where she could step away from fear and focus on something that brought her peace. “Creating gave me a space where I didn’t have to explain everything,” she said. “I could simply sit with my thoughts and allow my hands and imagination to take over.” For Castro-Estrada, healing through art does not mean every piece has to be about pain. Sometimes healing means allowing yourself to experience joy again, to be curious, to imagine and to create without fear or judgment. Her health journey also changed the way she looks at life, reminding her not to take time for granted and teaching her the importance of hope, faith, resilience and appreciating even the smallest moments. “Art has taught me that I am stronger and more creative than I sometimes give myself credit for,” Castro-Estrada said. “It has also taught me to let go of perfection.” Today, Castro-Estrada looks forward to continuing to grow as an artist, exploring new ideas and sharing her work with the Seguin community. Her story is a reminder that healing and growth are not always visible, and that strength does not always mean being fearless. For Castro-Estrada, difficult seasons do not have to be the end of the story. There can still be hope, growth, creativity and beautiful things waiting ahead. “Sometimes, simply continuing forward is its own kind of strength,” she said. 34 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING
