Welcome to this very special issue of Seguin Magazine. This edition is dedicated to all of the veterans that have served and defended our great country. This is especially close to my heart as my grandfather, Maj. Paul L. Bark, served three tours in the Vietnam War and retired from the U.S. Army and my brother, Chief Petty Officer William F. Bark, Jr., served in the U.S. Navy for 12 years. Coming from a military family, I know the heartache and stress of having your loved ones deployed for months even years at a time. Not knowing where they are, what kind of surroundings they’re in and not being able to communicate with them on a regular basis really takes a toll. But the support and honor we show our veterans is what keeps them going every day. In this issue, you will find stories centered around veteran-owned-and-operated businesses as well as passions and events that are all being done by or for veterans. We also recognize some of our local heroes with photos submitted by their loved ones. So, as you flip through this beautiful magazine, be sure to think about what all these people have gone through in their lives and where it brought them today. “It usually can be rather difficult getting veterans to talk about their time spent during wartime military service. But get them talking about other things and they sometimes open up like flowers. A couple of the vets interviewed for this special edition of Seguin Magazine let me into their homes and their lives when discussing the things they love. World War II air traffic controller Al Machaud provided stories about his time in the service. He talked about the tragic losses of his little brother and one of his sons. But he really talked about the photography he so enjoys. Al graciously gave much of his time discussing the poetic verse he personally writes to go along with some of his favorite shots of nature. Jack Jackson spent time in the military but that doesn’t seem to be the story he’s more interested in sharing. He lights up when discussing his guitar playing, though. Jack gets great pleasure playing with friends around the community or just strumming away in his home studio. couple had already lost two children to unforeseen circumstances, Machaud said. It was 1945 and war continued across other continents. Like others in his age range at the time in the United States and abroad, Machaud felt he had a duty. “I didn’t care. The war really had not ended yet,” he said. “All of us back in those days [thought] ‘Let me at ‘em!’ Everybody joined the service.” The signs were there for his mom, Machaud said. He was in ROTC, he was enthusiastic about the war effort and he thought she should have known there would be no stopping him. “I wanted to fly so bad. My mother wouldn’t approve,” he said. “So right after I graduated [high school], I didn’t even tell my brother who slept in the bed next to me. … I snuck out the house and boarded that bus.” The bus took the 17-year-old Machaud, who had enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps, to Fort Dix. The Air Corps was the Army’s aerial warfare service before advent of the United States Air Force. Machaud joined, of course, with hopes of getting his wings. The Fates, it would seem, were not on his side. While he applied for flight GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING ~ SEGUIN 13

s one might think of a WW II veteran, Albert “Al” Machaud has done and seen many things in his days. His role as an air traffic controller in the Army Air Corps lent itself to just that. Much of it started as he lay on his back on the roof of his family’s tenement home in New Bedford, Massachusetts. It was there that Machaud watched planes take off and land from the New Bedford airport, which the United States Navy took over during the war. He marveled at the planes passing overhead and dreamed of someday piloting one to some far-off land. “It was the tenement district. We lived on the third floor with access to the attic,” Machaud said. “I would go up there by myself and spend an hour or whatever time available.” The flying bug bit young Machaud. His personal plans were to become a pilot and help the good guys in the war that was ravaging the world. “I wanted into the service,” he said. “I wanted into World War II. I would not take no for an answer.” Machaud’s mother, though, would hear nothing of it. He was the youngest of his parents’ four children and the
training and aced the required test, the Army had other things in mind. A sergeant informed Machaud that flight school was closed and his chance at becoming an aviator was gone. Still, the young soldier wanted to do his part. He and the sergeant went through a book of possible jobs related to flying
and came across air traffic control. “I said, ‘That’s probably as close as I’m going to get to flying?’ He said, ‘You’re probably right,’” Machaud said, adding that he signed up for the job. “A lot of people depended on me. All these pilots, they’re pretty well dependent on the tower.” He spent most of his time during
the war in the Pacific directing P-51 fighter planes. Machaud said he also spent some time in the radio position on B-17 bomber reconnaissance missions. Machaud left the service in 1949 and made his way to Texas. He enrolled at the University of Texas on the GI Bill to earn his degree in meteorology. That didn’t last long.

“One instructor talked about typhoons until I was typhooned out,” Machaud said. He switched to accounting, where he met Dolores Schmidt of Seguin. The two married and had four children. His wife and two children have since died. Machaud worked in the oil and gas industry and did pretty well for himself, he said. He traveled the globe as an executive in the industry. Throughout the years, he’s attended World War II remembrance events and received honors for his time as a WWII vet. Like most of his era, Machaud downplays any accolades or war-related accomplishments. “It was a nice journey. I did my job,” he said. “I think I was good at it.” He’s decided to stop appearing at most of the WWII events. Trips overseas to talk about the war — in which he saw lots of tragedy and death — is no longer something the veteran wants to do, Machaud said. He prefers taking photographs, writing poems and even combining the two for Christmas cards and other greetings. All-in-all, Machaud considers himself to have led a charmed life, one he looks back on fondly whether alone or telling parts of his story. “I’m the luckiest guy who ever lived, you can’t imagine,” Machaud said. “You haven’t heard half of what I’ve done in life.”

coastal city opens its doors annually to give soldiers a day of fishing, and some local fisherman load up their boats and help out. Each year, for almost a decade, retired Seguin Fire Chief Scott MyCue hauls his boat to Port O’Connor for Warrior Weekend. “We take wounded soldiers out bay fishing, gulf fishing,” he said. “It is all volunteer run. It is a big production that Port O’Connor puts on, and I’m glad we are part of it.” MyCue is part of a larger group,

which refers to themselves as the Low Life Gang, brought together by the late John Nash, who was a Navy Corps Medic. MyCue was recruited by Nash, his brother-in-law, 11 years ago, along with other veterans, who would eventually form the group. “John was the one who started all of this and we’re carrying on his tradition,” MyCue said. “All of the ones there were veterans, Navy, Coast Guard, he even threw fire department in there for good measure, and called us the Low Life Gang.”
Combat wounded veterans are invited to a weekend at the coast, where they are housed, fed and treated to a day of fishing, the Warrior Weekend website stated. “For 16 years, Warrior’s Weekend has been assisting combat wounded veterans with a relaxing water therapy weekend in Port O’Connor,” it read. About 200 boats — each with a captain and an assistant — float out with about 400 veterans on a Saturday morning, MyCue said. They come in at 3 p.m. and GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING ~ SEGUIN 17
participate in a contest to show off the biggest fish, heaviest fish, the biggest shark, red fish, trout and more, MyCue said. “They enjoy it very much,” he said. “It gives them a break from going through rehab or trying to mend from their wounds.” The crew usually heads up a day 18 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING
early to scout out fishing spots, in hopes of creating a successful trip for the veterans, MyCue said. “We take them to different spots — shallow water, deep water, even let them get out on a sand bar,” he said. “We really like seeing them have a good time.” Family and friends from across the
country join together to help make the weekend special, MyCue said. This year, the Low Life Gang paid homage to the one who started it for them. “This last go-round was to honor John, and both of his sons went fishing with us in their boats,” MyCue said. “We look forward to it each year.” Warrior’s Weekend is set for the third

It is just our way of somehow paying them back for what they’ve been through.”

The love of Music
local musician Enriches Lives with his guitar
S
ince the 1970s when he was a United States Army soldier deployed to South Korea during the Vietnam War era, Clarence “Jack” Jackson has found therapeutic aspects of playing music. Jackson picked up playing guitar and has found time to practice whenever possible. But more than getting better, he enjoyed a sense of relief while playing. “It’s a great escape. You can get away from the news, the pandemics and

all the junk going on in this world right now and just escape,” Jackson said. “I go to my music and I ride a motorcycle. Between the two of them, I don’t have to think about much of that stuff.” Jackson now regularly plays the guitar around his Guadalupe County home, at church and at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall in Geronimo. It’s not always for the escape but sometimes just for some good, old-fashioned fun. “We do a jam session at the VFW
for the older people in the area,” he said. “Not all of them are veterans. They range from 94 years old down to me. I’m the youngest one in the group.” At 70 years old, Jackson has found a home away from home where he can jam with community members and fellow veterans. He joined the Army in September 1972 and got out in January 1979 as a sergeant E5. While in uniform, he worked detail as a military police, the GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING ~ SEGUIN 21
final three years as a traffic accident investigator, Jackson said. “Back in the military, I spent a lot of time on alert forces,” he said. “We had a lot of time on our hands, We would be on alert for a week to go anywhere in the world immediately. If we got a call, we boarded a C5 and we were gone right then.” While waiting for the call, he and his buddies had loads of down time, Jackson said. One guy played guitar and Jackson would watch him before eventually picking up his own axe and taking a few 22 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING
lessons from the soldier, Jackson said. “I finally started picking up a bit,” he said. “I played it off-and-on through the 70s and then the 80s. Then life got in the way.” Life included raising a family with three children. Also, there was work providing for the clan. He spent years after the military working in oil fields. He worked on drilling rigs and a service truck as a logging engineer, Jackson said. But he developed a distaste for the fickle oil industry.
“I just got tired of the up and down,” Jackson said. “One day I was rich and another day I was working at the Dairy Mart. I got out of that and got into the rental business.” He rented construction equipment — excavators, bulldozers, loaders, back hoes and more — for 30 years before retirement. With that retirement came more time on his hands. And just like when he was in the military, Jackson went back to the guitar. He made his home a bit more conducive to his artistic endeavors.

“Now as I retired, I’ve had enough time that I have a very small music room,” Jackson said. “That’s where I spend a lot of my spare time back here in my music room, just learning how to play.” He learned to play — and continues to strum — by ear, never having learned to read sheet music. His favorite guitar is a Takamine acoustic that he can also plug in for an electric sound. Jackson also has a Fender Squire he enjoys. “It’s easier to chord with,” he said. “I’ve had it quite a while. I just like the acoustic sound better.” The second Tuesday of each month, he gets with other musicians at the VFW for jam sessions. There’s a steel guitar player, two fiddlers, drum and piano players and a bass player who meet up for the afternoon sessions. Sometimes as many as 20 or 30 people show up, Jackson said. “We play the old country music, the old stuff,” he said. “In the last couple of years, I’ve tried to make them learn some of the new stuff, the Garth Brooks and Randy Jackson. It’s just good entertainment for older people that have a lot of time on their hands. It gives them a chance to do something they love.” Many of the folks he plays with are pretty accomplished. They’ve played with the likes of Ray Price and Willie Nelson when those artists have come to town and needed someone to fill in, Jackson said. Many of them have some great stories to tell. “They all play better than me,” he said. “I’m an amateur and a novice.” Throughout the years, Jackson provided music at different events. He has done funerals, memorial services, birthday parties and more. He also plays for Staples Baptist Church on Sundays. Whenever he gets to play, it’s a good time, even if it’s just a few folks getting together in his backyard, grabbing a beer and rocking out. In fact, sometimes those are the best, he said. But he doesn’t take the music too seriously. It’s strictly for his own enjoyment. “I do it for me,” Jackson said. “I don’t want any recognition or anything like that. It’s my hobby.”

Veterans Day Flags
Kiwanis Club of Seguin Salutes servicemen, women

T
he stars and stripes are prominently displayed around patriotic holidays. It is especially true in downtown Seguin as American flags, planted by a local service organization, proudly wave. For more than 50 years, the Kiwanis Club of Seguin has decorated the town red, white and blue to support the nation’s veterans and active-duty servicemen and women, Kiwanis Club of Seguin Lifetime member Ed Engelhardt said. “I can’t remember when we started,” he said. “It’s been a long time.” It started as a sponsorship program 24 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING
with businesses and residents sponsoring a flag, and the Kiwanis would deliver them on those patriotic days, Engelhardt, who served in the Army during the Korean War, said “In the beginning, the activity covered a much larger area, including individual homes, as well as businesses,” he said. “It took six pickup trucks and 12 people to do the routes.” Over the years, participation declined, but the project continued. Engelhardt said it now takes four volunteers and two pickups to distribute the flags along Austin and Court streets and then around the Guadalupe County Courthouse and Seguin’s
Central Park. “We just do it as a community project, just because we want to do it,” he said. “It is not a fundraiser. While there have been contributions in the past, revenue to pay for the flags mainly comes from the annual Kiwanis Flapjack Jamboree, held in April.” The flag committee places the flags in holes drilled into the sidewalk by the city, Engelhardt said, something the crew appreciates. As a veteran, Engelhardt said he is proud to continue the project. “I think it looks nice when you see them flying, especially on Veterans Day and Fourth of July,” he said.

Donna Maske
A Veteran with a love of the arts Story and photos by Felicia Frazar
D
onna Maske has long enjoyed the arts. Since she was young, she has colored, painted, quilted, knitted and more. Her love of arts led her to the path of teaching others to hone their artistic skills. But her path to teaching and learning a variety of talents wasn’t a direct route as she enlisted in the Army Corps. “I joined the Army in 1975,” she said. “I was in the last cycle of basic training for the Women’s Army Corps. By the time I finished AIT 26 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING
(advanced individual training) and got to Fort Hood, the Army Corps was disbanded, and it was all co-ed military by then. They already had men and women working together at Fort Jackson.” While she served during the Vietnam War, Maske was not sent into war; however, her husband was, she said. Maske earned her teaching degree. After her first year, she opted for a change and enlisted. “I was a supply clerk to a 400-bed
surgical hospital at Fort Hood,” she said. “After I got out of the Army, I went back to teaching.” The veteran earned her Bachelor’s of Art in education, Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in studio art and eventually her Master’s of Art Education. Maske taught various subjects, including social studies, physical education and art. At Marion High School, from where she retired after 24 years, Maske taught art to all levels, from beginners to advanced placement.

“Being an art teacher and because I had AP art students, I had to be able to offer various studio hours,” she said. “I had to learn a lot of 3D stuff, like metal, because I had kids that did jewelry portfolios. They had to do a 3D portfolio, a 2D portfolio, or a drawing portfolio. We had some that did clay and photography.” To help her students learn, Maske continued her education and built on the skills she learned as a child. Art education began early for

Maske. Her earliest memory is getting a watercolor set that included a coloring book. Through the years, she learned how to quilt, knit and embroider from her family. “I always colored, and I always drew,” she said. “All of the women in my family quilted. Momma had the quilting frame on the ceiling that dropped down, and so did granny. I remember going to granny’s and her letting me quilt. I learned to embroider when I was real young. crochet when I was in grade school; my granny taught me.” The knitting technique Maske uses is one she learned from her aunt. “One of my aunts, her husband was in the Navy, and they were stationed in Trinidad, and the ladies there taught her to knit,” she said. “She came back and taught us. So I knit differently than everybody else. I do continental; that is where you stick one of your needles under your arm and manipulate the other needle around it. Everyone else
moves both needles.” Working on arts and crafts has a calming effect, and Maske often finds herself spending hours in her crafting room, working primarily in the realm of fiber arts and creating multimedia pieces. “For the last few years, I have done more fibers — weaving, basketry, hand dying, experimenting with natural dyes, I spin with a drop spindle, I’ve experimented with multimedia, polymer clay,” she said.

activities at Arts Fest and Earth Day. She is also working to restore a pair of mid-century chairs for the organization’s new building. Currently, Maske is working on a two-year project of making a quilt for her granddaughter’s graduation. She eventually wants to teach her grandchildren all she has learned.

Dynamite Dogz a Veteran’s new take on Classic Hot Dogs Story and photos by Felicia Frazar
I
nside a remodeled, military-green school bus, John Buchanan works away over a grill, moving wieners over the flames and lightly toasting buns, all while chatting with customers. Buchanan, a U.S. Air Force veteran, created TNT Dogz, a successful hot dog food truck business, along with his wife Brindy and their children. “It is not just a hot dog, it is a different experience,” John said. “We don’t want to do anything normal. It is 30 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING
a hot dog, but I guarantee you haven’t had anything like what we’ve got.” It started out small in 2018 with a canopy and evolved into a rolling restaurant themed by John’s service in the military. The name TNT alone is a play on words on two levels. It offers images of John’s job in the Air Force working with munitions and explosives, and it represents his family. “TNT is actually an acronym for
an explosive material called trinitrotoluene used in bombs,” he said. “Because I worked with explosive compounds, it was fitting. It’s funny because my in-laws said they would pay me if I used their name in my business. Their names are Trent and Teressa.” John served eight years in the U.S. Air Force, where he worked on special operations aircraft. After his discharge from the service, John cashed in his GI Bill and went to school, earning both

dogs nestled in lightly-toasted, specially-made buns. The German-American is served with sauerkraut, dog sauce, spicy mustard, onions and celery salt. The Little Boy is topped with dog sauce, jalapeños, banana peppers, onion, sauerkraut, spicy mustard and celery salt. “The Little Boy is the name of the (atomic) bomb they used in World War II when they dropped it on Japan,” John 32 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING
said. “We call that one the Little Boy because it’s got everything on it. It’s just a big splash of everything that makes a big mess and people like that.” To make their dogs stand out, the couple researched sauces and crafted the ever-popular TNT Dog Sauce. “We did research online, we found a lot of generic sauces and we started to try them,” he said. “We took it and ran with it and decided to add our own flair
to it. There’s a couple of different sauces that we use that makes it and sends it over the top.” The grill alone make’s the Buchanan’s dogs more “Texan,” John said. “We put a Texas flair to it with a grill instead of using a griddle,” he said. “We’re in Texas, we grill everything here.” As John mans the grill, his children help the customers. “We take a lot of pride in what we

ant to have the customer relations.” The idea to serve up a hot dog business in Seguin came to the Buchanans through their travels around the country. “We found places that did hot dogs and we thought, ‘hey, we could do that in Texas and we can blow it out of the water,’” he said. “We just did some hot dog ideas that we found.” When the city opened the door for 34 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING
food trucks to set up shop, the couple jumped on board. They found an old school bus and after seeking bids to help mold it into the rolling kitchen of their dreams, they opted to do the work themselves, John said. “We built it ourselves with the help of heavy lifting,” he said. “There was a lot of sheet metal work. I had the kids help me with the painting and the re-wiring.”
The bus has a fully-operational kitchen with drinking water and grey water, a generator, grill, fryer and refrigerator. While it started out as a regular school bus, it holds more sentimental meaning for John and his family. “The way I built the bus nods to the military with the lights and the color. I take a lot of pride in it,” he said. Eventually, the couple plans to grow

I want to open a soda shop in a way. Not like an old fashioned soda shop …. we would have a whole menu full of flavors. A lot of people don’t drink coffee, it would be like that concept of a coffee shop, but it’s soda.”
