W

elcome to our exciting, inaugural issue of the South-Central Texas County Fair & Festival Guide. This has been a passion project for all of us here at The Seguin Gazette. As the local newspaper, it is our job to keep you informed of the news and happenings around our community. In the past 18 months as we have endured a pandemic, it became evident to us that we needed to help our neighbors and spread the word about their events as things started opening back up again. Each of these events is put on by volunteers who spend countless hours, days and months preparing for their fair or festival. They each serve a purpose and support their communities more than just a few days out of the year. It’s one of the many great things I love about Texas, our passion to give back during the best and worst of times. Whether you’re looking to watch some bull riding, listen to live music, hop on carnival rides, enjoy good food or choose something just as exciting, then look no further than the next few pages. There is something for everyone at the Comal County Fair & Rodeo, Gonzales Come & Take It Celebration, Guadalupe County Fair & PRCA Rodeo, Floresville Peanut Festival, Selma Skylight Balloon Fest and Seguin’s Pecan Fest Heritage Days. So, prepare to get your funnel cakes and ride tickets, and dive on in to read about when, where and how to get to all of these events. Be sure to follow their websites and social media pages for any updates leading up to the big event.

Bring in this Discount Coupon and receive 20% off one single item. Coupon not valid with any other sales promotions. Expires october 15, 2021.

HISTORY

T

he Come and Take It Celebration commemorates the firing of the first shot of the Texas Revolution on Oct. 2, 1835, which took place near Gonzales. The town of Gonzales was established by Empresario Green DeWitt in 1825, two and one-half miles east of the confluence of the San Marcos and Guadalupe rivers. It was the westernmost Anglo settlement until the close of the Texas Revolution and was named in honor of Don Rafael Gonzales, provisional governor of Coahuila, Mexico and Texas. The town was laid out in the shape of a cross, with seven squares. During the colonial period of 1825 to 1835, there were many problems with Comanche and Tonkawa Indians, but Gonzales flourished. It was a thriving capital of the De Witt colony by 1833.

In 1831 the Mexican government loaned the citizens of Gonzales a 6-pound cannon as protection against the Indians. In September of 1835, as political unrest grew, Mexican officials at San Antonio de Bexar demanded the cannon be returned. A corporal with five soldiers and an oxcart was first sent by Col. Ugartechea, Bexar military commander, to Gonzales. The corporal carried a request that the small reinforced cannon, a bronze six-pounder, be returned to the Mexican Army. Andrew Ponton refused to relinquish it, stalling for time, and the little cannon was buried in George W. Davis’ peach orchard, near the Guadalupe River. Next came Lieutenant Castaneda and 150 mounted soldiers to “take” the cannon. When the soldiers appeared on the west bank of the Guadalupe River, there were only 18 men in Gonzales, but these ‘Old Eighteen’ stood at the river in defiance, denied the Mexicans a crossing by hiding the ferry, and sent out a call for volunteers to assist them. As the soldiers scouted the river for a place to cross, they moved upriver a short distance, near the present-day community of Cost and camped for the night. There, in the early-morning hours of Oct. 2, 1835, the colonists crossed the river with their cannon, surprising the troops and waving their hastily fashioned flag, which proclaimed “Come and Take It.” Almost immediately the cannon fired, killing one of Castenada’s men and scattering the rest, forcing them to retreat to San Antonio de Bexar. Thus was fired the shot that set off the struggle for Texas independence from Mexico. When the smoke cleared, the Mexican troops had taken off. The Texas Revolution had begun. Gonzales became known as “The Lexington of Texas,” where the first shot was fired, and where the first Texas Army of Volunteers gathered. A few months after the first shot, men and boys from the region would gather in Gonzales, sending the only reinforcements ever received at the Alamo. Each October, on the first full weekend of October, the citizens of Gonzales gather to celebrate their Texas heritage in a three-day festival called “Come & Take It.”

FLORESVILLE PEANUT FESTIVAL

T

HISTORY

he date was July 29, 1938, when plans for a first festival to celebrate the farming and harvesting of the peanut crop were discussed. The celebration was to be designated as the “Floresville Peanut Pow Wow” to promote the farm commodity and to boast world success of Wilson County’s diversified farming program. The hanging of peanut plants across the front of businesses heralded the arrival of the harvesting season. By August 5, 1938 the name changed to the “Floresville Peanut Festival” and the occasion was considered the first of its kind in Texas. Governor-elect W. Lee O’Daniel was invited to open the festivities and head the fare with his famous Hill Billy Band. The August meeting asked for cooperation of every citizen of the county for the festival and Miss Elizabeth Sheehy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe T. Sheehy, was selected as the Queen Tunaep I (“peanut” spelled backwards). Mr. Joe T. Sheehy, known as “the Peanut King of Southwest Texas,” was Wilson County’s pioneer in the peanut industry. He experimented with peanut farming and introduced the Spanish peanut, a viable crop to the farmers of Wilson County. Mr. Sheehy began his peanut business in Sutherland Springs, Texas and later moved it to Floresville in 1916. John Connally, later Governor of Texas, was chosen as the King Reboog I (“goober” spelled backwards.) Always held on the second full weekend in October, the Peanut Festival is a grand celebration to recognize the importance of the peanut to the Southwest Texas agriculture.

7 PM - 11 PM – DOWNTOWN SEGUIN HATS OFF TO JUAN SEGUIN PUB CRAWL

DETAILS Once a year, the citizens of Seguin break out of their shells and go a little nuts at the annual Pecan Fest. The event is a celebration of all things pecans and the heritage and cultures that make Seguin uniquely Seguin. Everyone is invited to come out for all the fun on October 30. From 10:00 to 4:00 in downtown Seguin, over 80 vendors will be set up around the square selling all sorts of goodies, from home decor and art to jewelry and clothing. There will be several vendors selling pecan items including pecan desserts, items made from pecan wood, and whole pecans. In addition to the vendors, downtown will host a beer and wine garden, live music, the get crack ‘in contest where you see how many pecans you can crack in 2 minutes, and more. Also, from 10:00 to 4:00, there will be even more vendors and pecans at the Big Red Barn. Also at the Big Red Barn, enjoy their delicious turkey & dressing lunch, take part in agricultural heritage projects, take your photo with the pecan that holds the title of “World’s Largest,” tour the Pecan Museum and take a step back in time as you visit the historic buildings on site. Saturday evening the fun will continue in downtown Seguin as the annual Hats Off to Juan Seguin Pub Crawl gets underway. In addition to celebrating pecans, it is also time for the City to throw the city’s namesake, Col. Juan N. Seguin, a birthday party. To celebrate, everyone is invited to wear a fun and unusual hat, or better yet, build your own hat, as they make their way from bar to bar. Each bar will have a pecan themed beverage and other activities and specials for party goers. Remember to drink responsibly and bring a designated driver. For the full list of Pecan Fest activities and COVID safety updates, visit www.seguingonuts.com.
