City names Municipal Court in honor of late judge Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) – The memory of the late Judge Kevin M. Kolb will be forever in the courtroom. Friends and family recently joined the city of Seguin as it named the Municipal Court Building on State Highway 46 South in his honor.

Judge Kolb died earlier this year after a courageous battle with cancer. Before taking the bench in 2008 as the first municipal judge, Kolb served in the Municipal Court as a prosecutor for

nearly 10 years.

Honored to witness the naming of the city building was Kolb’s wife Elizabeth. Kolb says pulling into the parking lot for the ceremony was the first time she got to see the lettering alongside the building.

“Kevin would be so humble that people would do this for him and so pleased. I know he’d be pleased, and I am too. I am pleased and very humbled,” said Kolb.

KWED Holiday Food and Toy Drive set for this Friday Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- The community of Seguin has four days in which to gather its donations for this year’s KWED Holiday Food and Toy Drive.

The annual drive will be held Friday from 7 to 9 a.m. outside the radio station located at 609 E. Court St. The Seguin Police Department’s Blue Santa Program, which helps provide gifts to underprivileged kids in Seguin and throughout Guadalupe County, is now collecting toys for boys and girls ages 12 and under. The Christian Cupboard, Seguin’s food pantry, is also in need of nonperishable food items so that Seguin families don’t go hungry.

Seguin and Guadalupe County officials plus group and business representatives will again all be on hand to help collect your coins, cash, checks, toys, or food donations.

In addition to toys and gifts, Blue Santa is always in need of new or used wrapping paper, scissors, tape and

bows. Wrapping items don’t have to be new and can simply be last year’s leftovers.

Like toys, non-perishable food donations for the Christian Cupboard as well as cash will be collected on Friday on Court Street. Suggestions for food items include beans, rice, pasta, cereal, peanut butter and soups.

Other items such as clean egg cartons, recycled bags and toiletries are also encouraged to be donated.

Local school bands and groups will also be returning to perform during this year’s KWED Holiday Food and Toy Drive. The Seguin High School Matador Band and SHS Choir will perform outside the KWED studios from 7 to 8 a.m. They will be followed by the Navarro Jazz Band from 8 to 9 a.m.

Those unable to make it Friday are encouraged to drop off donations anytime this week at KWED. The radio station is open Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

(Guadalupe County) -- A fire has left an area family of 12 homeless this Thanksgiving week.

Patrick Pinder, Guadalupe County emergency management coordinator and fire marshal, says the fire was reported at 3 p.m. Sunday in the 5400 block of FM 466. Pinder says when firefighters arrived, they found two occupants attempting to put out the flames inside the manufactured home. He says during their efforts, the fire which started in the back bedroom quickly spread

into the attic. Pinder reports the loss of several pets. They included a pot belly pig, a dog as well as some reptiles.

Pinder says the fire has been deemed electrical and believes it originated from the back bedroom closet which stored the home’s water heater. The American Red Cross was called out the scene to assist the family.

Those working alongside the Sand Hills Volunteer Fire Department were the Kingsbury, New Berlin, Belmont, and Seguin Fire Departments.

Among those credited for honoring Kolb in this way was Landra Solansky, court administrator.

“The day after we lost Judge Kolb, I was talking to Susan Caddell, my finance director. She’s my supervisor and I said, ‘you know at some point, I think we should do something.’ I never dreamed that it would be naming this building and this court after him and so after she and I had talked about it, we both had it written down and so it was something that came between the two of us and she just ran with it and she took it to council,” said Solansky.

Solansky says she thanks all those who have helped to maintain Kolb’s legacy in the courtroom.

“It’s an honor to work in this building named after him. Every day when we pull up, it reminds us of why we do what we do. He’s the best. He’s the only judge that I

worked with in Seguin, so it’s been a blessing. He was a blessing and I’m so appreciative to the Seguin City Council for allowing this to happen,” said Solansky.

Judge Kolb, who is also remembered for practicing law for several years, was a graduate of Seguin High School and a long-time resident of Seguin. The ceremony was held on Friday, Nov. 17.

(Seguin) -- This single-story, Austin-stone home was built in the mid-1950s and sits on the southwest corner of the intersection of College and San Marcos Streets. The three-bedroom, 1-1/2 bath home, originally owned by the Clark and Ruby Core Family, currently has 2,146 square feet of living space. The original floor plan of the home included a breezeway and a single-car garage on the west side of the structure. The garage space eventually was turned into the third bedroom, and the breezeway was converted into a living space. The original portion of the house contains built-ins throughout, highlighted by built-ins along the eastern wall of the large living room. Other unique features include original light fixtures in the living room and hallway and the living

room’s covered ceiling. Since 1998, the home has undergone two renovation projects. Timothy and Rebecca Clark purchased the home in October of 1998, closing on the home just before the big flood of 1998, and worked with their families over the next five months to repair and renovate. Before moving in, the Clarks removed all wall heaters and used their improving plaster and spackling skills to fill in the wall heater spaces and make repairs to cracks and imperfections in the walls and coved ceiling. The second major renovation took place in 2012 when the renovated breezeway space was fully replaced with new walls and windows, and the third bedroom was updated with new windows, paint, lighting, and wood-floor work.

TLU Football Slated to Rejoin and Compete in SCAC in 2024 Bryce Hayes - TLU Sports Information & Sports Marketing

SEGUIN, Texas -- After seven seasons as an affiliate member of the American Southwest Conference (ASC), Texas Lutheran University has decided to make the move to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) starting with the 2024-25 academic year. The SCAC announced the reinstatement of football as a conference sponsored sport in 2022 with the intention to start in 2024 and, with the move, allows Texas Lutheran to have all 18 NCAA sponsored sports compete in the conference.

Football was an officially sponsored sport of the conference from 1962 (when the league was formed as the College Athletic Conference) through the 2016 season. Texas Lutheran previously competed in the SCAC in football from 2013 to 2016 before joining the ASC as an affiliate. Texas Lutheran won three conference championships (2013-15) in the four years they were a member of the conference in football. As core members, Austin College, Centenary College, and McMurry University, along with affiliate member Lyon College, had each agreed to play football under the SCAC umbrella beginning in 2024. Texas Lutheran, who played as a football-only affiliate with the American Southwest Conference from 2017-2023, had previously committed to a 2025 start date in the SCAC but recently made a request to move that start date up one year.

The ASC is a very strong football conference. However, TLU is tremendously excited about playing SCAC Football. The SCAC has been a good fit for TLU and

Statement from SCAC President Dwayne Hanberry “I give a lot of credit to the football coaches and athletic directors at Austin College, Centenary, McMurry and Lyon for their willingness to adjust their schedules in order to bring Texas Lutheran aboard a season earlier. Once TLU expressed an interest in beginning their SCAC football journey in 2024, everyone was very excited to do what we could to accommodate their request.”

As a five-member football league, the SCAC will play a double round robin schedule in 2024 with each team playing the other home and away for an eightgame conference schedule. MSG Ronald Frank “Ronnie” Ruby, USA (Ret.), age 74 of Seguin, passed away on November 21, 2023. Ronnie was born on October 6, 1949, in Eagle Lake, Texas to Alice Belle Clapp Mckee and Frank Ruby. Ronnie was a member of the 1968 graduating class of Seguin High School. He proudly served his country by joining the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and after 8 years of service he transferred to the United States Army where he retired as a Master Sergeant. After retirement, he enjoyed woodworking, building items, cooking, casino trips, and playing golf.

Ron is preceded in death by his parents and his stepfather, J. L. McKee. Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Marcy Ruby; daughters, Kimberly Green and her husband Patrick and Amber Story and her husband Chris; granddaughters, Ashton Story, Whitney Young, and husband Will, Cassidy Kirkpatrick and husband Ty, Rebecca Riebe, and husband Ryan, and Peyton Story; great-grandchildren, Henry, Macie, and Mahalie and Graham on the way; sister-in-law, Gina Burns and husband David and Debbie Vincent; brother-in-law, Shannon Truelock; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members and many friends.

RSV Vaccine Recommendation For Winter (Pierre, SD) -- Doctors are warning of the triple threat of COVID-19, the flu, and RSV overlapping as winter approaches. Dr. Jeremy Cauwels, chief physician with Sanford Health, is recommending the latest RSV vaccine for those at risk this season. It’s a potentially dangerous, highly contagious virus that can cause respiratory disease. Very young children, people over the age of 60, and expectant mothers are the most at-risk.

The typical RSV season is from October through March, part of a potentially rough season for illnesses ahead.

Mysterious Superbug Sickening And Killing Dogs May Have Been Identified (Durham, NH) -- A mysterious superbug that’s been sickening and killing dogs across the U.S. may have been identified. It still has no name but researchers at the University of New Hampshire are describing the microorganism as a “funky bacterium.” Dr. David Needle says its small size may be the reason it’s been so successful at evading canine immune defenses. The respiratory illness starts out with a cough, like the flu or kennel cough, but lasts for six to eight weeks. Other symptoms include difficulty breathing, fatigue, discharge from the eye or nose and acute pneumonia that doesn’t respond to antibiotics. The illness has been reported in 14 states from California to Massachusetts.

Women’s Clinic To Try To Block North Dakota’s Abortion Ban (Bismarck, ND) -- A women’s clinic is trying to block a portion of North Dakota’s new abortion law. Five physicians filed the request earlier this week, saying a provision allowing the procedure in order to prevent “serious health risk” to a patient is too vague. The group wants the injunction to stay in place until the lawsuit against the full ban in the state goes to trial next year. Governor Doug Burgum signed the new bill into law earlier this year, allowing doctors who violate the measure to be charged with a Class C felony. The Red River Women’s Clinic used to be the state’s only abortion provider. It moved out of Fargo and into Moorhead, Minnesota, last year after the previous abortion law would have forced it to close.

New Study Shows Eating Popcorn Can Hold Lower Dementia Risk (Chicago, IL) -- A new study shows that eating popcorn can help lower the risk of dementia. Researchers at Rush University in Chicago tracked 33-hundred seniors for six years and found that those who ate at least three ounces of whole grains a day, such as popcorn, quinoa or cereal, had a smaller decline in cognitive scores than those who barely ate whole grains. Researchers say they only saw that effect in Black participants.

The reason is unclear but it is known that six out of ten seniors who took part in the study were Black.
