FERNANDEZ

Just as the caterpillar reaches the end of its quiet journey only to emerge with wings, Charity has completed her earthly chapters and transitioned into lasting peace. On September 22, 2026, Charity Calderon Fernandez passed away at the age of 51 in San Antonio, TX. To those who loved her, this loss is not a permanent conclusion, but a metamorphosis – the freeing of a gorgeous soul from its earthly bonds. Born on January 7, 1975, in Seguin, TX, to Juanita and the late Steven Calderon, she captured their hearts at first sight. Her greatest joy was the life she built alongside her loving husband, Albert Fernandez. Together for almost two decades, they shared laughter, quiet comfort, and a love that weathered many storms. Albert never left her side. Through every hard day of her illness, he was her caregiver, her protector, and her constant companion, right to the very end. His devotion to her was as fierce and loyal as hers was to him. Though Charity has left Albert behind in this earthly life, the bond between them remains unbroken. While he is left to navigate a world that feels significantly darker, Albert will anchor himself to the precious memories and the enduring love they so generously gave each other. Among those left to navigate the emptiness of a world without Charity is her deeply devoted mother, Juanita Carrillo Calderon. The bond between them was fierce, and woven through 51 years of laughter, phone calls, and an unconditional love. Janie will carry the shattered pieces of her heart until they are together, again. She holds firm in the knowledge that Charity is now with her beloved Dad in Heaven. One can only imagine the tears of joy, as Steve took her hand, and whispered softly in her ear, “Welcome Home, Mama,” as they walked hand in hand down the streets of gold, for eternity. Charity lived a life of grand adventure, embracing the beauty of different cultures while residing in Germany, and capturing unforgettable moments during her visit to France. Her ultimate dream came true during a breathtaking pilgrimage to Rome and Vatican City, a journey that filled her heart with peace and awe. Along with her husband, Albert, their adventurous spirits took them from the bustling streets of New York, Chicago, and Boston, to the scenic coast of San Francisco, the familiar warmth of New Jersey, the calming landscapes of Kentucky and the natural beauty of Canada. Together, they created memories never to be forgotten. Charity’s absence leaves an irreplaceable void in the hearts of all who knew her, including her little sister and lifelong best friend, Stefany Calderon. From childhood secrets to the understanding of adulthood, their bond was a testament to the unbreakable connection shared by sisters lucky enough to have one another. The challenges they braved together and the foundational love they held for each other will remain alive, always. It is a light that not even death can diminish. One of the most tender bonds Charity shared was with her beloved feline son, Rome E. He was her shadow on difficult days, and her comfort when she needed it. He was her source of pure, endless love. She remains with him in his quiet purrs and gentle gazes. The family pledges to surround

Rome with the same love and care his mom gave him. Charity embraced the relationship she had with her brother-in-law, Jaime Fernandez, Jr, her sister-in-law, Sharon, their son, Eric Mabry, his wife, Ashley, her father-in-law, Jaime Fernandez, Sr, and her late mother-in-law, Magdalena Fernandez. Holding the family up through this unimaginable heartbreak are Charity’s adoring aunts and uncles: Maria Pierce (Martin), Dora Luera, Bobby Calderon, Nick Carrillo (Velma) and Joe G. Carrillo (Loretta). Though the void is immeasurable, Charity’s spirit will be carried forward by the ones who grew up alongside her; more than just family members, she leaves behind a tribe of cousins and friends. Each of us know that it was not only her father waiting for her at the gates of Heaven, but her beloved grandparents, Teodora L. and Jose M. Carrillo, and Guadalupe L. and Inocencio Calderon, along with the aunts, uncles, cousins and friends, who no doubt wrapped her in their embrace. None more so than Barkley Hercules, her canine son. We know he ran straight into her arms and smothered her with kisses. Charity lived her life as a reflection of her name, giving entirely of herself to comfort and lift those around her. While our hearts ache at the empty space left behind, we take comfort in knowing that Charity’s spirit has taken flight, entirely unbound, beautifully transformed and eternally free. Pallbearers: Brent Carrillo, Carlos Miranda, Jr, Jason Carrillo, Jon T. Pierce, Daniel Pierce, Travis Pierce, Miguel Carrillo, Jr, and Corey Calderon Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will leave this life. The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away. Blessed be the name of the Lord. —Job 1:21 Visitation Thursday, October 8, 2026 Palmer Mortuary & Cremations 1116 N Austin St, Seguin, TX 78155 5:00 - 8:00 pm (Central time) Rosary Thursday October 8, 2026 Palmer Mortuary & Cremations 1116 N Austin St, Seguin, TX 78155 6:30 - 7:30 pm (Central time) Mass Friday, October 9, 2026 Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church 409 W Krezdorn St, Seguin, TX 78155 10:00 - 11:00 am (Central time) Interment Friday, October 9, 2026 Holy Cross Cemetery 17501 Nacogdoches Rd, San Antonio, TX 78266 12:30 pm (Central time)

Jay Carl Crowell, age 74 of Seguin, formerly of Luling, passed away on October 3, 2026. Jay was born on January 20, 1952, in Luling, Texas to Ople Liddie (Colwell) and Marion Holmes Crowell. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, gifted athlete, successful businessman, community servant, and loyal friend, Jay lived his life with determination, strength, and a personality that was unmistakably his own. From an early age, Jay had an exceptional talent for football. His ability on the field earned him multiple opportunities to play college football, with offers from programs including Notre Dame, the University of Texas, Texas A&M University, and West Point, among others. Ultimately, Jay chose the University of Houston, where he proudly played left guard for the Houston Cougars and had the opportunity to play in the Bluebonnet Bowl. But one of the most important moments of Jay’s life happened long before college football. While still in high school, Jay was working at a gas station when he met a young woman named Joyce. From that day forward, Jay loved Joyce. The two married in 1972, beginning a life together that would span more than four decades. After college, Jay and Joyce moved to Seguin, where they began their family and welcomed two daughters, Dana and Kristen. Throughout his career, Jay worked for several banks and savings and loans and was also a highly successful real estate agent. He was intelligent, driven, and very good at what he did. While working at First National Bank in Luling, Jay started the first discount brokerage in the San Antonio District. Of all his professional and community accomplishments, one held a particularly special place in his heart. Jay took the liquid assets of McNeil Cemetery and invested them with the goal of securing its future. Because of his work and foresight, the cemetery became semi-perpetual—an accomplishment of which he remained extremely proud. Jay also believed strongly in giving back to the communities he called home. Over the years, he served as President and Vice President of the Luling Chamber of Commerce and served with the Luling Watermelon Thump Association, McNeil Cemetery Board, Luling Economic Foundation, Luling Golf Association, Luling Volunteer Fire Department, and Seguin Volunteer Fire Department. He also competed on the Pumper Race Team for the Seguin Fire Department. Jay was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.

FRI. October 9, 2026

Jay was tough. He was straightforward. You never had to wonder what he was thinking because, more often than not, he was going to tell you. He could be hard, and every now and then his honesty might offend someone. But Jay was Jay, and the people who knew him understood that. He was fiercely loyal, had many lifelong friends, and lived life on his own terms. Jay loved playing golf with his golf buddies, fishing, football, good music, and especially Elvis Presley. He was a great dancer, too, but his favorite dance partner was always Joyce. Family was an important part of Jay’s life. Like many families, not every relationship or every season was simple, but the love was still there. He loved his daughters, Dana and Kristen, and his grandchildren and great-grandchild each held a place in his heart. Jay was a fighter throughout his life, and he remained one until the very end. He faced cancer with the same toughness and determination with which he faced everything else. After a long and difficult battle, Jay lost his life to cancer, leaving behind the legacy of a life fully lived and people who loved him deeply. He will be remembered for his strength, his stubbornness, his loyalty, his accomplishments, his stories, his love of football and golf, his friendships, and the love he carried for Joyce throughout his life. Jay Carl Crowell was one of a kind. And to those who knew and loved him, there will simply never be another Jay. Jay is preceded in death by his wife Joyce, and his parents. Survivors include his daughters, Dana McNabb and husband Matt, and Kristen Johnson; grandchildren, Kendall Kabela and husband Brittan, Carson McNabb, and Kash McNabb; great-grandchild, Kaison Kabela; sister Nancy Kay Tiller and husband Leo; brother-in-law, Kenneth Sekula and wife Ibbie; numerous other loving family members and many friends. Visitation will begin on Monday, October 12, 2026, at 10 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church, 500 E. Travis St., Luling, TX, 78648, followed by the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 10:30 a.m. and the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. Honorary Pallbearers will be Doug Hendricks, Delton Hendricks, Kenneth Sekula, Kenny Williams, Ronnie Via, Bubba Brousard, Tony Shaker, David Heine, Jim Kramer, and Gary Boyd. Private interment will be held at a later date in the McNeil Cemetery in McNeil, Texas. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Cardinal Booster Club, P. O. Box 725, Shiner, Texas, 77984. You are invited to sign the guest book at www.treshewell.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary, 165 Tor Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155, 830-549-5912.

After their youngest graduated High School, they moved to Seguin, where they lived their last 26 years together. Along the way they made many lifelong friends and were deeply invested in the life and leadership of the local Churches of Christ. Jean then began working for Walmart, a career that stretched 35+ years. She loved her time at Walmart and made many dear friends while working there. Jean was also quite the collector! Her greatest love of collecting were her teapots, glass chickens and roosters. She was known by many as the “chicken lady” and was gifted hundreds of glass chickens and roosters. She also loved collecting decorative items depicting bluebonnets and cardinals. Other collections of hers included glass heart dishes and Cinderella memorabilia. Jean loved a good hamburger, especially from Kirby’s in Seguin. Her other “joys” in life included corn nuggets, the color yellow, cryptogram and crossword puzzles, Hallmark movies, romance novels, Lindor chocolate and Diet Coke. She will be dearly missed by friends and family and will always be remembered as a strong, vibrant lady who loved her Lord and family fervently. She shared a happy life of 52 years with her late husband, Frank “Pete” Schievelbein. Lorene worked for 35 years at Nolte Bank where she made friends with many of the friendly faces she met daily. After retirement, she and her husband enjoyed woodworking, and they also worked side by side gardening and canning foods, especially okra, sweet pickles, and beets. Lorene was gifted in many ways. She loved quilting and making numerous baby blankets that will remain treasured keepsakes. She was also an amazing seamstress. Her giving spirit extended into her community through volunteer work at the hospital and at church. She was also a faithful member of the 6:15 water aerobics class at the wellness center, a routine that reflected both her energy and her steady nature. Tim owned and operated the Seguin Laser Wash for the past 22 years. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle in his spare time, throughout the countryside. He was proficient in all things, computers and tech and always made time for that. Cooking, especially barbequing was a favorite pastime, and his briskets were always requested by family and friends. As of late, he had fun with pinball machines. Tim is preceded in death by his parents, and his sister Pamela Baitz.

REININGER

Elmond “Ray” Reininger, age 79 of Seguin, passed away on September 17, 2026. Ray was born on April 5, 1947, in Seguin, Texas, to Velma (Schroeder) and Elmond Otto Reininger. A lifelong Seguin native, Ray graduated from Seguin High School in 1965. He joined the United States Navy during the Vietnam era, serving his country as an electronics technician. Following his military service, Ray returned home to Seguin and began what would become a long career in law enforcement, first serving as a patrolman with the Seguin Police Department. He later attended Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, earning his degree in law enforcement while supporting himself as an electronics technician for Motorola. After graduation, Ray attended the U.S. Border Patrol Academy and served as a Border Patrol agent for three years. In 1978, he began the longest chapter of his law enforcement career with the former U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). He devoted nearly two decades to federal law enforcement before retiring in 1997 as a Special Agent. During these years, Ray and his former wife, Cynthia Medlin, raised their six children in Seguin. Service remained an important part of Ray’s life long after his retirement. He was active in veterans and federal retiree organizations, including the American Legion and the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE), where he served his local chapter. His passion for genealogy also led to many years of service with the Comal County Genealogy Society. He served as vice president for six years before becoming president in 2022 and later serving as treasurer and past president. In 2015, Ray married Deborah “Debbie” Reininger who remained with him until his death. Ray’s interests were as varied as the chapters of his life. A self taught builder and craftsman, he built two of his own homes and was rarely afraid to take on a project himself. He also had a lifelong love of cars. One of his

proudest projects was the restoration of a 1966 Mustang. And while Ray always seemed to have something he was working on, he was just as likely to have a story to tell or a conversation to strike up- and once he got started, he could talk your ear off. Over the years, his interests included collecting and selling sports cards and comic books. Later in life, he turned his attention to growing produce and raising chickens, selling his goods at area farmers markets. BRUNS

The Reverend Thomas Charles Bruns, age 88 of Seguin, passed away on September 24, 2026. Tom was born on July 15, 1938, in El Paso, Texas to Florence Julia “Nina” (Wilson) and Joseph Louis Bruns. Tom was a graduate of the University of Texas and Virginia Theological Seminary. He was ordained at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Seguin. Always a Texas Longhorn fan, he took great delight in following the teams, regardless of

where he lived. He served as an Episcopal priest in Llano, Eagle Pass, Pleasanton, and Lockhart. He retired when stationed in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. After retirement, he and Martha moved to Seguin, where they enjoyed country living on acreage east of Seguin. They later moved to Mexico where he and Martha enjoyed retirement living in San Miguel De Allende. After a few years, they returned to Seguin and lived in the residential area established on land once owned by Tom’s grandparents. He was always proud of that fact and never failed to tell that to someone he had just met. He was an active Rotarian in all the communities in which they lived,

David Louis Vyoral, 74, of Seguin and Rockport, passed away on September 24, 2026. He was born on December 10, 1951, in Liberty, Texas, to Ruby Marguerite (Damek) and Eddie Louis Vyoral. David grew up with a natural talent for building, fixing, and imagining what things could become. From tinkering with cars and working on the farm alongside his father, David’s hands were always creating, restoring, and improving. David was a dreamer and a doer. At the age of 17, he drove his rebuilt Austin Healy cross country by himself. The year before he turned 30, he rebuilt a wellworn 25’ sailboat and singlehanded it across the Gulf of Mexico. He was eventually joined by his wife Ann, and together they explored the Florida Keys and Bahamas, as they began a life filled with travel, creation, friends, and cats. David was a proud graduate of the University of Texas, with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. His career took him from National Supply in Houston, Texas, to the Georgetown County Water and Sewer District in South Carolina, and back to Texas for his job as the Aransas County Road and Bridge Engineer in Rockport, each move offering new opportunities

having been a club president more than once. While in Pleasanton, he was an active volunteer in the fire department and held the City of Pleasanton position of Fire Marshall. Tom is preceded in death by his son, John Burgwin Bruns and his parents. Survivors include his loving wife, Martha Bruns; son, Thomas Meade Bruns of San Antonio; daughters, Melany Head of Austin, and Maria Miller and husband Jonathan of Leander; proud grandpa to Alan Miller and Dillon J. Head; twin brother, Joe Bruns and wife Sue Ellen “Sudy”; sister, Dorothy Bauer and husband Sydney; numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members and a host of friends. Bishop Angela Cortiñas and the Reverends Stephen Shortess and Karen Morris officiating. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 201 E. Nolte St., Seguin, Texas, 78155 or to the charity of one’s choice. to restore homes (and one big commercial building). He traveled when he could—always drawn to the water wherever he went. David and Ann retired in Seguin, where he embraced his final dream of transforming an old house overlooking the Guadalupe River into a home with a garage big enough for all of his tools and room to play pool with his friends. He poured the same care into their retreat on Salt Lake in Rockport, where they went to watch the sun rise whenever they could. David never stopped building, fixing, helping, or telling people how they should do things. David is survived by his wife, Ann (Holzschuher), his sister, Jeanette Calhoun, nephews, Brian (Lisa) Calhoun and Bradley (Angie) Calhoun, and niece, Ashley (Carlos) Seckler, along with honorary nieces Thea Setterbo and Katie ( Jeffrey) Goodall. He also leaves behind his “harem” - a group of strong women who lent unending support to David and his wife. In lieu of flowers, David would want you to donate to NPR or a charity of your choice, root for the Texas Longhorns, or vote for Eric Norman (Guadalupe County) and James Talarico (Texas). WHO Presses Russia On Plague Death Of Researcher And Second Reported Death (Switzerland) -- Both the White House and the World Health Organization want answers from Russia on the unexplained death at the Irkutsk Research Anti-Plague Institute of Siberia. A 28-year-old researcher at the facility reportedly died from the pneumonic plague and now there’s reports of a second death. WHO’s Director General said in a statement that the agency asked Russian authorities to clarify what caused the severe case of pneumonia. He said the organization is still in contact with Russian officials and offered technical support but is seeking additional information about the pathogen that prompted the public health response and reports involving a second employee. 194-Year-Old Tortoise Gives Aging A Run for Its Money (Nashville, TN) -- A tortoise born before the Civil War may hold clues to slowing human aging. Vanderbilt Health researchers helped uncover the findings published Wednesday about “Jonathan,” the world’s oldest known living land animal. He’s blind and weighs 450 pounds, but many of the genes controlling his cells still behave much like those of a five-year-old tortoise. Cheek DNA testing shows that his cellular energy production is still remarkably youthful, although scientists still don’t know why: but they hope the discovery will eventually lead to treatments that bring people closer to a so-called “eternal spring.” Breast Cancer Reduction Risk Tips (Hershey, PA) -- October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and a health expert is weighing in on what to do to reduce risk of developing it. Professor Cheryl Thompson studies cancer risk at the Penn State Cancer Institute. She says maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol consumption and exercising regularly will reduce risk. Also knowing your family history could signal when you should start screening for breast cancer. About one in eight women in America will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. WHO Releases Guidelines On Rise In Childhood Obesity (Geneva) -- The World Health Organization is releasing first ever guidelines to address the big rise in obesity among children. The organization is recommending structured dietary and physical activity tailored to individuals or part of a program. It does not recommend pharmacy treatment or weight loss surgery that changes the digestive tract for children up to nine years old. The World Health Organization is also calling on policy makers to make healthy diets and physical activity more accessible and affordable. The CDC says about 20 percent of U.S. children and adolescents have obesity.
