National Night Out encourages neighbors to connect, look out for one another Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Guadalupe County) -- Maybe there will be a large block party. Maybe it will be a backyard barbecue, a potluck dinner, a few games with the kids or simply a neighbor stepping outside and saying hello. But no matter how it looks, local law enforcement officials say National Night Out is less about how fancy the gathering is and more about taking the time to connect with the people who live around you.
Today, Oct. 6 marks the Texas observance of National Night Out. Seguin Police Chief Jason Brady says the annual event is all about connection. “It’s also an opportunity for neighbors that live next to each other and down the street to get out and meet each other,” said Brady. “Crime prevention is, and in safe neighborhoods, is knowing your neighbors, knowing your neighborhood, know who belongs.” Neighbors, pg. 3

Woman killed in vehicle vs. train crash Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Guadalupe County) -- A 73-year-old Seguin woman was killed this weekend after the vehicle she was driving collided with a freight train on Tschoepe Road. According to officials with the Texas Department of Public Safety, the crash was reported around 8:27 p.m. Saturday.
DPS Staff Sgt. Dila Hidalgo says preliminary investigation indicates that Kathleen Preece Oliver was driving a 2020 Lincoln Nautilus when the accident occurred. Hidalgo says investigation into the accident continues.
TLU express lessons in service Students take part in annual H.O.T. Dogs Day of Service Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) --- Nearly 200 Texas Lutheran University students recently spent part of their Saturday giving back to the Seguin community. On Sept. 19, the students took part in the university’s H.O.T. Dogs Day of service. H.O.T. stands for “Helping Others Together.” Tracy Donley, TLU director of communications and content says each year, TLU students get an opportunity to step away from the classroom and “put the university’s emphasis on servant leadership into action.” “They really show up and give their time and energy to a wide range of local volunteer projects,” said Donley. “It really underlines the university’s commitment to volunteerism and teaching students about the concept of servant leadership through firsthand experiences.” Donley says students spent the morning doing hands-on work such as cleaning, planting, building or just lending a hand wherever they were needed. “I think that it turns out that the people who volunteer get as much out of the experience as the people
who they’re helping,” Donley said. “There are so many profound lessons that can be learned by reaching out and spending time and helping others.” The fall H.O.T. Dogs Day included projects at locations throughout Seguin and the
surrounding area, including community gardens, churches, senior housing, nonprofit organizations and other community projects. TLU holds H.O.T. Dogs Days twice a year –once in the fall and once in the spring.

Neighbors, continued. Brady says knowing the people who live nearby can make a difference when it comes to recognizing something that does not seem right. “It’s just an opportunity to go out, you know, so the police department tries to facilitate these events, but really we want to see the community engaging and getting to know your neighbors and having meaningful dialogue and making relationships,” said Brady. As of Monday, the Seguin Police Department had 27 registered National Night Out events in the city of Seguin. Across Guadalupe County, Lt. Zach McBride with the Guadalupe County Sheriff ’s Office says deputies will also be providing a presence at several events in the unincorporated areas of the county. He says no matter where they are, residents should not feel like they need to organize a large party to participate. “You really don’t even have to have a party per se. I mean, just turn on your porch light, step outside, greet your neighbors,” said McBride said. “It’s really one of the

best crime prevention tools that we have is neighbors knowing neighbors.” McBride says the sheriff ’s office is also seeing a shift in events as longtime organizers pass on their traditions to new residents and new groups in the area. One special event planned in the county will take place at the Marion Community Library, where children ages 6 to 12 can participate in “Laser Tag with the Law” from 7 to 9 p.m. McBride says several of their deputies will be on hand for the event. For those who have never participated in National Night Out, Brady says there is no need “to overthink it” and that “it doesn’t have to be fancy.” In fact, a simple gathering, he says, can provide an opportunity to meet someone new or simply check on a neighbor. Residents who would like to register for a National Night Out event should contact their respective law enforcement agency so officers can be made aware of the gathering and, if possible, can stop by to visit with residents. However, residents are reminded that they do not have to register their event to participate in today’s National Night Out observance.

Johnson recognized as part of SCAC Weekly Awards Reily Chestnut
SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran sophomore cornerback Malik Johnson (Paris/Paris) was tabbed the SCAC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday following his pair of pick-sixes last Saturday in the Bulldogs victory over Lyon. This is his second SCAC weekly award of his career and of the season. The Bulldogs have earned Defensive Player of the Week honors in four of the five weeks this season. Johnson recorded one of the most memorable single-game performances by a Bulldog in recent memory, bringing back two pick-six interceptions for touchdowns, one in each half, of Texas Lutheran’s win. Johnson is the first Bulldog since TLU became an NCAA institution to record multiple picksix interceptions in a single game. Johnson broke the Texas Lutheran single-season pick-six record with
four in just five games this season. The record was previously held by Kyle McNally (3, 2011). Following a bye week next Saturday, Johnson and Texas Lutheran will prepare to open SCAC play as the Hendrix College Warriors travel to Seguin on Oct. 17 in what will be a highly anticipated matchup following last year’s instant classic. cities of Vinita, Bartlesville, Muskogee, and Okmulgee. In 1964 they moved their young family to Texas, living in the cities of Abilene, Dallas, Temple, Waco, Palestine, Marshall, Denton, Alice, Portland, and New Braunfels. After their youngest graduated High School, they moved to Seguin, where they lived their last 26 years together. Along the way they made many lifelong friends and were deeply invested in the life and leadership of the local Churches of Christ. Jean was a faithful follower of Jesus and lived her life accordingly. She initially was a stay-at-home mom, but later began to work as an aide in nursing homes. Jean then began working for Walmart, a career that stretched 35+ years. She loved her time at Walmart and made many dear friends while working there. Jean was also quite the collector! Her greatest love of collecting were her teapots, glass chickens and roosters. She was known by many as the “chicken lady” and was gifted hundreds of glass chickens and roosters. She also loved collecting decorative items depicting bluebonnets and cardinals. Other collections of hers included glass heart dishes and Cinderella memorabilia. Jean loved a good hamburger, especially from Kirby’s in Seguin. Her other “joys” in life included corn nuggets, the color yellow, cryptogram and crossword puzzles, Hallmark movies, romance novels, Lindor chocolate and Diet Coke. She will be dearly missed by friends and family and will always be remembered as a strong, vibrant lady who loved her Lord and family fervently. May she rest in peace with those who preceded her to their heavenly home.
Lorene Herbold Schievelbein, of Seguin, Texas, passed away on October 2, 2026, in Seguin. She was born on January 18, 1929, in Guadalupe County, Texas. Lorene will be remembered as a woman who loved her family with her entire heart and made that love known in the everyday ways that matter most. She cherished gathering her family around the table, and Sunday lunches were a special tradition, giving her time to cook for those she loved and enjoy being together. She was a great cook who took special joy in making each grandchild a favorite dish suited to their tastes, a simple and tender way of caring for each one individually. She shared a happy life of 52 years with her late husband, Frank “Pete” Schievelbein. Lorene worked for 35 years at Nolte Bank where she made friends with many of the friendly faces she met daily. After retirement, she and her husband enjoyed woodworking, and they also worked side by side gardening and canning foods, especially okra, sweet pickles, and beets. Lorene was gifted in many ways. She loved quilting and making numerous baby blankets that will remain treasured keepsakes. She was also an amazing seamstress. Her giving spirit extended into her community through volunteer work at the hospital and at church. She was also a faithful member of the 6:15 water aerobics class at the wellness center, a routine that reflected both her energy and her steady nature.

Mental Health Experts See Rise Of Online Gambling (University Park, PA) -- Mental health experts are seeing an increase in the number of people struggling with financial stress and depression tied to online gambling platforms. Liz Ward with Penn State Health Advancement thinks easier access to gambling than ever before has resulted in more people dealing with mental health problems tied to gambling. A study a few months ago by Epic Research shows the number of those being diagnosed with a gambling disorder rose more than 60 percent since 2018, with the biggest increase among young men. Cancer Society Highlights Risk Factors For Breast Cancer (Atlanta, GA) -- The American Cancer Society is highlighting action that can be taken to lower the risk of women getting cancer during this Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The organization conducted a survey of 33 thousand U.S. women and found risk factor awareness is high, but many women are not taking action to lower the risk. The American Cancer Society says most women are aware drinking alcohol raises risk but 69 percent drink. Also, 91 percent of women know low activity level raises risk, but more than one quarter of women don’t meet the organization’s exercise recommendations. Negative Health Impacts With Youth Sports Rising (Undated) -- A sports performance psychologist is highlighting the negative mental health impacts of pushing children too hard when it comes to youth sports. Dr. Joseph Galasso at Baker Street Behavioral Health says his practice is seeing an increase in families seeking help for their children feeling stress and anxiety over the pressure to perform well. He says the business of youth sports is getting pushed to the younger ages. Galasso says if a child isn’t having fun, it’s either too much or the wrong sport. He says if your child isn’t growing as an athlete or being a good teammate, that is a sign it’s too much. MIND Diet Linked To Slower Brian Aging (Undated) -- New research shows a certain kind of diet slows down brain aging. What’s called the MIND diet was linked to less brain tissue loss over time and helps with memory, decision making and learning. The new research in the Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery And Psychiatry estimates the mind diet over time slows down brain aging by two and a half years. The MIND diet consists of green leafy veggies, nuts, whole grains, fish, poultry and some other food groups.
