Seguin Fall Festival to bring full day of music, cars, plus family fun to downtown Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) – Fall officially arrives in Central Park this weekend with the return of the annual Seguin Fall Festival The all-day celebration, benefiting local fire departments, will feature a number of events including live Texas country music, a classic car show, vendors, kids’ activities and more.

Patrick Pinder, Guadalupe County emergency management coordinator and fire marshal, says preparations are already underway to accommodate the large turnout expected in Central Park and surrounding streets.

“At 7 a.m., we are shutting all of downtown so Nolte, Donegan, River and Austin Street so the main road that cuts through town is going to be shut down,” Pinder said. “We are going to have traffic control between Court Street and Nolte Street and

so that main section in front of the Burnt Beant and all the shopping centers is going to be shut down on Saturday from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.”

He added that traffic will be rerouted with signage around the Justice Center one or two blocks over. “Those streets will be open. It’s just Austin Street but it’s also a benefit for other events such as Sip n Stroll and things like that. This street will be closed for that also,” said Pinder.

Pinder says the festival is free to attend and will kick off at 9 a.m.

“The Seguin Fall Festival is a benefit fundraiser for the local fire departments and what we do is we kind of sell out craft vendors and food vendors and we have a car show, and we will have live entertainment – three full bands,” said Pinder.

Community invited to first “Erica’s Movies on the Lawn” event at Mosheim Mansion Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- What began as a blood drive in honor of a young woman fighting leukemia, and later in her memory, is now growing into a full community movement -- one that her family says will continue month after month on the grounds of the historic Mosheim Mansion.

This Saturday, the Mosheim Mansion will host the first Erica’s Movies on the Lawn, a new monthly community event honoring the life and legacy of Erica Saucedo.

Patricia Saucedo, Erica’s mother, says families are invited to bring blankets and lawn chairs for an evening screening of The Addams Family plus costume contest. Admission is $5 per family. Proceeds will benefit the Guadalupe County Children’s Advocacy Center, a non-profit close to Erica’s heart.

The 32-year-old worked side-by-side with her mother to restore and operate the Mosheim Mansion. Even when undergoing transfusions and treatment at MD Anderson, her mother says she continued managing inquiries for the venue.

However, she says her daughter always envisioned the mansion as more than “just a venue.” She says it was Erica’s dream for it to be a place where Seguin could gather.

“We are going to do Movies on the Lawn to try and really encourage community involvement in Seguin and so with that, the community was a big part of Erica’s life, and

we want the Mosheim to really be in her memory and so she asked that we continue that. So, we are continuing that now as a venue and trying to do some community events there.

The (Oct.) 18th will be the first Erica Movie on the Lawn community event, and we are going to do those movies on the lawn monthly,” said Saucedo.

The announcement of the movies on the lawn comes just one week after the Saucedo family hosted a blood drive in Erica’s honor -- a continuation of the promise made to her after her passing in June.

Teatro to host annual De Mano a Mano Market this Saturday Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) --Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin will again be transforming its cultural arts center into a hub of creativity and community. The nonprofit organization this Saturday will host its 6th Annual De Mano a Mano Open Air Artisan Market, a free event showcasing regional artisans and celebrating Mexican American culture.

Organizers say the event will be more than just a marketplace but a living celebration of Mexican American creativity, heritage and community pride.

Dr. Yvonne De La Rosa, Teatro’s executive director says visitors will have the opportunity to browse and purchase one-of-a-kind handmade goods, enjoy vibrant displays of

cultural artistry, and engage in a community-centered event that highlights creativity.

“The event has become a cornerstone of Teatro’s mission to promote and preserve Mexican American culture while supporting artisans and small businesses,” said De La Rosa.

GRMC’s Dr. Jonven Attia Joins Saturday Topic to Discuss Diabetes Awareness and Prevention Darren Dunn

(Seguin) -- The fight against the high prevalence of diabetes in the Seguin area will be part of the discussion featured this weekend on KWED's Saturday Topic program.

Dr. Jonven Attia, an endocrinologist at GRMC, joins the program to discuss how the hospital and its Endocrinology Team are working to help diabetic patients and those at risk of developing diabetes.

Dr. Attia says there’s a significant diabetic population locally, and it’s impacting the lives of too many people. She says that’s

one of the reasons why the team is organizing a major World Diabetes Day event.

Dr. Attia encourages everyone to come out and learn more about improving the overall health of our community.

“I think everybody should come—whether you have diabetes or not. You know somebody who does.

Having diabetes is very frustrating for that person. It's not easy. They need family support, spouse support, friends’ support. Everybody knows a diabetic,” said Attia.

We will have bounce houses, a petting zoo, a mini pumpkin patch, and prizes for the kids so it’s just a time for the family to come together and just hang out at the park and the event is completely free other than the Kids Zone. We do charge a $10 entry fee for the Kids Zone and it’s good all day.”

Pinder says sign-up is also still available for the car show.

“The car show begins at 9 a.m. Judging begins at 11 a.m. Once the judging is done, we are hoping to get announcement and awards pushed out. If cars want a prime location, then we will make sure

we get them in there. We do have two sponsored car dealerships, so they are going to get priority. We do have Gunn CDJR here in town and we have Tesla coming out. Tesla potentially can have some test drive cars set up. We are waiting on confirmation on that,” said Pinder.

Music is also set for the entire day. The event will include DJ music throughout the afternoon and three evening performances by Texas country artists Ian Tonroy, Hayden Baker, and Matt Castillo.

Pinder says adding to the excitement will be a pet costume contest. He says participation is encouraged.

“We do have a pet costume contest. It will

begin around 4-4:15 p.m. Registration will start around 3:30 p.m. around the gazebo,” said Pinder.

“We do have a $5 donation or entry fee for that since this is a fundraiser for the fire departments.

But we do have prizes for that. Last year, we gave out $25 gift cards to Pet Smart and things like that.

We do have a couple of categories. So, dress up your pets and bring them out and if anyone wants to come judge that, show up at the gazebo and we are going to pick the judges there at the same time.”

Ronald was born on January 11, 1936, to Howard H. and Maggie Bee (Wiley) Batey in Pandora, Texas and entered the gates of Heaven on October 9, 2025.

Ron grew up in and around his grandpa’s general store in Union Valley, Tx. He lived with them at the store during his second and third grade years due to the fact that there was no teacher. He would ride a donkey to school. From jumping-sliding off roofs, getting stuck in a stove pipe while playing hide and seek or shooting rabbits and squirrels, these were just some of grandpa’s hilarious and scary stories he would share from his childhood.

After graduating from Seguin H.S., where he made many friends and memories, he joined the U.S. Navy. His ship was hit by a rogue wave which killed 2 men. His rank was FN when he was discharged at 22 years of age.

Ronald’s first management position after his service to our country was at Dixie Farm and Steel San Antonio in 1958. Dixie would become Advance in 1966 and eventually Symons in New Braunfels in 1968. Ron would work twelve-hour days until his early retirement at 62. Even though he never received an engineering degree, Ron was called back to work several times after retiring to travel to several countries and states to lead projects due to his knowledge and expertise.

Having a little more time on his hands, Ron studied hard and got his pilot license. He then bought a plane and enjoyed taking trips with family and friends. He also started flipping houses which he thoroughly enjoyed.

During his life Ron enjoyed racing cars, hunting, fishing, painting, cookingbaking, traveling, 9 pin bowling, being outdoors and most importantly being with family. Oh, how could we forget his westerns that he watched over and over again like he had never seen them before. He was most definitely our “John Wayne.”

Henderson, Pamela McIntyre Walker, Louis Francis III, Willie Vernon Francis, and Linda Francis Wall, who will continue to honor his legacy through their lives. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins whom he dearly loved.

He was preceded in death by his beloved grandparents, Tyler and Bessie Ketchum, his father, Albert McIntyre Sr., his mother, Bessie Mae Ketchum McKnight, his brother, Larry McIntyre, his son-in-law, Arthur L. Stork, and his bonus moms Lena D. Coleman, Joyce Allen, and Sue E. Ussery, who have welcomed him into eternal rest.

He was a man of many simple pleasures—watching football and tennis, mastering the art of barbecuing, and regularly checking on friends at the local nursing home. His genuine concern and the joy he took in these visits were a testament to his generous and loving heart. Quince was known for his sharp sense of style and took pride in always looking his best.

As a news anchor, devout in my faith and driven to share truth and light, I am privileged to honor Quince McIntyre, whose life exemplified these same values. His life reminds me of the profound words by the Apostle Paul, “And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love” (1 Corinthians 13:13). Indeed, love was the guiding principle of Quince’s journey.

Quince McIntyre leaves behind a profound legacy represented by his unwavering faith, generosity, and unconditional love. The community of Seguin, and all who knew him, are better for having been touched by his presence. He will be deeply missed, yet his spirit endures in the countless lives he enriched during his time on Earth.

Alvin Lee Petty, age 86 of Seguin, passed away on October 14, 2025. Alvin was born in San Antonio, Texas on December 4, 1938 to Mary S. (Roberts) and Alcyone Lee Petty.

Alvin is preceded in death by his loving wife of 56 years, Nadine Martha Saathoff Petty, his daughter, Deanna Lee Petty, his parents, and his brother-in-law, Michael Saathoff.

Survivors include his daughter, Lana Zunker and husband Darryl; son, Alvin L. Quince McIntyre “Quaila”, a cherished pillar of the Seguin community and a beacon of unwavering faith, was called to his heavenly home on September 28, 2025, at the age of 69. He was born in Seguin on December 30, 1955, to the late Albert McIntyre Sr. and Bessie Mae Ketchum McKnight, and grew up alongside his loving siblings.

Known for his generous spirit and loving nature, Quince was a devout Christian who illuminated the lives of everyone around him with his faith-filled presence. He accepted Christ at an early age at St. James. Later in life, he joined Pilgrim Rest.

Quince began his education at Ball School and went on to attend Seguin High School before starting a career that made him a respected and beloved member of his community. Throughout his life, he remained deeply involved in various associations, always eager to contribute to the well-being of others.

His family was the cornerstone of his existence. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis McIntyre, and loving daughters, Erica D. Stork, LaKeitha R. McIntyre Allen (Chad), and Quinika U. McIntyre (Nicole) whom he loved and cherished dearly. Bonus daughters Brittney and Devon. His grandchildren, Arthur L., Sophia S, Eric J Stork, Jaquarius Powell, Alazaeh Ussery, Taleah Jenkins, and bonus-grandchildren Jordan and JaCorey, will forever treasure the wisdom and joy he imparted in their lives.

Charlie is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Allen Ray Meckel and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Leonie (Albrecht) and Benno Adolph Haecker, Sr. along with numerous sisters-in-laws and brothers-in-laws.

He met his beautiful and caring wife at a dance hall called the Golden Stallion in San Antonio in February 1971. Once they met, Charlie knew immediately that “she was the one and only for me!” They were married on August 21, 1971, at Redeemer Church in Zuehl, TX. Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Elaine “Cookie” Haecker Meckel, daughter Tabby McHardy and husband Robert; son, Troy Meckel, granddaughters, Skylar McHardy, and Winter Monilaw and husband Joshua; sisters-in-law, Myrna Meckel, Ruby Golla, Carolyn Cohu, and Debi Haecker; numerous nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and great-great nephews, other loving family members and a host of friends.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at Redeemer Church in Zuehl followed by a memorial service celebrating Charlie’s life at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Jennifer Gold officiating. A reception will follow.

Charles “Charlie” Richard Meckel, age 77 of Marion, passed away on October 3, 2025. Charles was born on April, 24, 1948 in San Antonio, Texas to Mary Lucille (Coker) and Alvin Phillip Meckel.

Charlie grew up in San Antonio, Texas and was a 1966 graduate of Sam Houston High School.

He received his Associates Degree from St. Philips College in 1980. Enlisting in the United States Army from 1968 to 1970, Charlie proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. His lifetime of jobs included working as a union carpenter apprentice with his dad in San Antonio, working in steel manufacturing at Ewing and Records, Inc. in Converse then moving into office clerical work. After being honorably discharged from the army, he worked as a supervisor for Albert’s Lawn and Garden Service providing mowing, maintenance and landscaping for commercial properties. Next came working as a self-employed contractor for TXDOT and then finally retiring from the City of Seguin after 20 years as a Class B Water Treatment Operator. While working for the City of Seguin, he served as the manager of Germania Bowling Club in Zuehl, TX for many years as he also enjoyed bowling 9-pin at many bowling clubs.

An avid outdoorsman, Charlie especially loved hunting whitetail, mule deer and elk in Texas, New Mexico and Colorado with family and friends. He enjoyed working with and designing metal art, taxidermy projects and was a collector of all things. His most precious times were spent gunsmithing and providing his expert knowledge of guns and ammunition to his family, friends and other gun enthusiasts.

Evelyn Mae Carpenter Bender, age 89 of Seguin, passed away on October 8, 2025. Evelyn was born on December 20, 1935 in Ft. Worth, Texas to Iva Mae (Wood) and Harry Wilson Carpenter.

Evelyn was a 1954 graduate of W.B. Ray High School in Corpus Christi, Texas, and later graduated from Southwest Texas State University in 1971 (Texas State), where she obtained her teaching degree. She taught for 26 years, teaching both at Seguin Independent School District and later at Seguin Christian Academy. She also Substitute taught for 10 years.

She was an active member of First Baptist Church in Seguin, and also enjoyed affiliations with Retired Teachers, American Legion Auxiliary, Silver Center, and the Texas Theatre.

Evelyn loved to travel and play cards with her friends. She traveled all over Europe which included Greece. She also visited both China and Russia and was blessed to do Missionary work in Nicaragua.

Weight Loss Drugs May Change How Body Handles Alcohol (Undated) -- Weight loss drugs like Ozempic may have an effect on how our bodies handle alcohol according to a new study. GLP-1 drugs may help you handle your alcohol better and consume less of it. The study by Virginia Tech found that those using GLP-1 drugs saw their blood alcohol levels rise at a slower pace and reported feeling less intoxicated than those not on the weight loss drugs. Those on the drugs also reported feeling less of a craving for alcohol both before and after the experiment.

US Confirms First Locally Acquired Chikungunya Virus Case Since 2019 (Long Island, NY) -- New York health officials have confirmed a locally acquired case of chikungunya [[ chi-kuhn-goo-nyuh ]] virus. Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne disease common in tropical and subtropical regions, with symptoms including fever, joint pain and swelling, headache, muscle pain and rash. Laboratory testing identified the virus in a resident of Nassau County on Long Island, but the exact source of exposure remains unknown. It marks the first such case in the U.S. in over five years, but health officials are reassuring the public that the current risk of transmission is low due to cooler fall temperatures which reduces mosquito activity.

New California Law Requires Restaurants To List Major Food Allergies On Menus (Sacramento, CA) -- California will be the first state in the US to require restaurants with 20 or more locations to list major food allergens on their menus starting in 2026. This includes ingredients like milk, eggs, shellfish, and tree nuts if they are present in the food. The California Restaurant Association has raised concerns that the law could be costly for businesses and may lead to lawsuits. Riverside Cemetery Tour Representatives of the Seguin Women’s Clubs will be hosting the Riverside Cemetery Tour on Saturday, October 26. This year’s tour highlights the stories of women who lived and worked alongside the men who established the Seguin community. Guests will meet historical figures among the shady Live Oaks at their gravesites and hear firsthand accounts of life along the Guadalupe River, from early days to recent history.
