Thermometer display at GRMC raises awareness of child heatstroke
(Seguin) – A rising digital thermometer outside Guadalupe Regional Medical Center is doing more than just displaying temperatures -- it’s delivering a life-saving message.

community. Anderson says they hope the real-time temperature reading will stop people in their tracks --- driving home the “deadly risks of leaving children in hot cars, even for a moment.”
She says it’s a clear visual
and urgent reminder of how fast vehicles can heat up -- even with a window cracked.
“A car can heat up 19 degrees in just 10 minutes. And cracking a window doesn’t help,” said Anderson.

Future transportation projects for Seguin up for vote
Residents urged to contribute public input
(Seguin) – The city of Seguin is calling on residents to make their voices heard as it competes for critical transportation funding through the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (AAMPO).
City officials say three major Seguin-area projects are in the running, and local support could be the deciding factor in bringing these plans to life.
The city of Seguin is vying for funding against four other counties.
Residents are encouraged to vote for Seguin’s projects -- listed as Projects #1, #2, and #14 -- through the AAMPO public input survey, now open through June 30.
The proposed projects include:
Project #1 – which is the expansion of State Highway 46. The project includes enhancing mobility by expanding
46 to better accommodate growing traffic between Seguin and New Braunfels.
Project #2 includes FM 20 Improvements – this involves upgrades to this corridor, which connects Seguin to Luling and Interstate-10, aiming to increase safety and capacity.
Project #14 is the Seguin Trails Network. The project includes the development of a citywide multi-use trail system to promote walking, biking, and alternative transportation access.
City officials stress that each vote plays a significant role in helping Seguin rise to the top of the funding list. To cast your vote, check out the online link available on the city of Seguin Facebook page or website.

Drivers encouraged to plan for continued detours along IH 10
(Seguin) -- Drivers in Seguin should prepare for nightly road closures along SH 123 this week as construction crews continue ongoing bridge work in the area.
According to city officials, State Hight 123 will be fully closed each night from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., from now through Saturday, June 21. The closure will take place between the I-10 westbound and eastbound frontage roads.
In addition, the closure will alternate nightly with a full closure of SH 123B in the same area.
Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead, use posted detours, and drive cautiously through the construction zones.
While they apologize for the inconvenience, the city of Seguin and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) also thank motorists for their patience as they work to complete these infrastructure improvements.

“Heatstroke can happen anytime, anywhere. We don’t want to see this happen to any family.”
Anderson says the initiative follows a sobering national trend in which more than 10 children in the U.S. have already died this year due to heatstroke after being left in vehicles. Since 1998, at least 1,011 children have lost their lives to this preventable cause. Health officials report that children’s bodies heat up three to five times faster than adults, putting them at especially high risk.
Anderson says even while staff members were setting up the display, the importance of what they were doing was quickly realized.
“(In the picture sent), you can see that it was 175 degrees inside the car. Now, that was after it had been set up for several hours but even that morning, when we were setting it up at 10:30 a.m., it really wasn’t that hot outside but after about 15 minutes, it was already 125 degrees inside the car,” said Anderson.
Anderson when it comes to preventing these tragedies, everyone has a responsibility.
“I think in our world today, people are just so distracted with everything going on and people are just busy, and I think it really happens more with people that maybe dropping off kids that day is not part of the normal routine. So maybe mom drops off the kids every day and today, dad is going to take the kids because mom has somewhere to be and it’s not dad’s normal routine and maybe he is late for work, he’s distracted and taking phone calls and things just happen,” said Anderson.
To help prevent these tragedies, GRMC is promoting the ACT safety campaign:
Avoid heatstroke-related injuries by never leaving a child alone in a car—not even for a minute. Always lock your car when it’s not in use to keep curious kids from climbing in.
Create reminders by placing a visual cue in the front seat, like a stuffed animal or your phone, whenever your child is in the back.
Take action. If you see a child alone in a car, call 911 immediately. Emergency responders are trained to act quickly in these life-or-death situations.

TLU Women’s Soccer releases 2025 schedule
SEGUIN, Texas -- Following their second SCAC Championship appearance in the last three seasons and one of the best seasons in program history last fall, the Texas Lutheran women’s soccer team has released its 2025 schedule, which includes seven matches at Gustafson Field with the season opener taking place on Aug. 30 against DivisionII opponent, Sul Ross State.
TLU will play ten conference matches over a six-week period, spanning from late-September through October against a new-look SCAC. Along with the SCAC slate, the Bulldogs will also be playing in eight non-conference games.
Prior to conference play, the Bulldogs will play in two exhibition matches on the road against UT-Rio Grande Valley (Sept. 7) and Texas A&M International (Sept. 10).
TLU’s non-conference schedule will consist of two home games and six away contests. The Bulldogs will face two non-conference opponents who finished the 2024 season ranked top-10 nationally and three teams total that played in the 2024 DIII NCAA Tournament in arguably the toughest non-conference slate to date. TLU will open its DIII non-conference schedule with a road match at Howard Payne (Sept. 6) before facing No. 7 Misericordia (Sept. 14) in a neutral site match hosted by Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton. Texas Lutheran will
host East Texas Baptist (Sept. 18) at Gustafson Field before playing the remainder of their non-conference slate on the road at HardinSimmons (Sept. 20), No. 10 Trinity (Sept. 23), Southwestern (Oct. 14), and UMHB (Oct. 21).
The Bulldogs will open their SCAC schedule at Austin College on Saturday, Sept. 26. TLU will then travel to LeTourneau (Sept. 28) before hosting Ozarks (AR) (Oct. 3) and Hendrix (Oct. 5). Texas Lutheran will travel to Dallas (Oct. 12) before hosting three SCAC matches against McMurry (Oct. 17), Schreiner (Oct. 19), and Centenary (Oct. 24).
TLU will end its 2025 regular season campaign on the road at St. Thomas (Oct. 26) and up the road at Concordia (Oct. 31).
Following the conclusion of the 2025 regular season, the SCAC Soccer Championship Tournament will start, beginning Thursday, Nov. 6 in Round Rock, Texas hosted by Concordia (TX). The final game of the championship will be played on Sunday, Nov. 9.

Castulo “Ernest” Vega, Jr. of Seguin, Texas passed away peacefully on June 6, 2025. He was born on December 31, 1936, in La Vernia. He married the “love of his life” Clara Vega, in 1956. They had 57 years of marriage together!
Ernest built a career as a welder. He worked many years at Randolph and Kelly Air Force Base. He was a great man with amazing character, integrity, and a huge heart and gave generously. He was a wonderful role model,

Wayne M. Rucker, age 78 of Seguin, passed away on June 9, 2025. Wayne was born on March 27, 1947 in San Antonio, Texas, to Ruby (Uhl) and William Rucker.
Wayne was a 1965 graduate of Marshall High School in San Antonio, Texas. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. As an electrical contractor he owned and operated several businesses and worked for several different electrical companies. He and Gerry enjoyed travelling throughout the United States, but some of the best times were spent on the Texas Coast. Wayne and Gerry were active members of Grace Lutheran Church in Seguin.
He is preceded in death by his parents.

Lehmann
Deborah “Debbie” Ann Becker Lehmann, 75, of Seguin, Texas, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2025. She was born on August 1, 1949, at Keidel Memorial Hospital in Fredericksburg, Texas, to Mary Lucille (Stapp) and Leon Rudolph Becker.
Debbie was baptized at the Methodist Church in Junction and confirmed at the First Methodist Church in Fredericksburg in May 1963. Her father worked as a livestock inspector for the State of Texas took the family to Menard, San Angelo, San Saba, Brady, and finally back to Fredericksburg, where she completed her schooling.
After graduating from Fredericksburg High School in 1968, Debbie held positions at the Fredericksburg Bakery, Kendall Hodges (as a bookkeeper), and the Security State Bank. It was there, in 1970, that she met Clifford “Cliff” Ruben Lehmann and fell madly in love with him. They married on January 15, 1972, at the Fredericksburg First Methodist Church and moved to Seguin in 1973 when Cliff accepted a transfer with the Farmers Home Administration.
In Seguin, Debbie worked at the S & H Green Stamp store before finding her true calling at Emanuel’s Lutheran Montessori School. For 17 years she nurtured preschoolers—greeting them with hugs, smiles, and gentle encouragement as they transitioned from home to school. Former students still cherish the kindness and confidence she instilled during their formative years.
Debbie’s bright personality was infectious—she never met a stranger, and her
trusted counselor, and champion for our family. He was also an avid golfer and an experienced fisherman. He worked hard, had high expectations and provided a better living for his family. He was a wise man and read the newspaper and bible daily. We will miss his stories he started with, “I tell you...”
He leaves behind four children, seven grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren, neighbors and many friends.
A memorial service celebrating Castillo’s life will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2025 at St. James Catholic Church. We will have a Rosary, at 9:30am. The mass will begin at 10am and reception will follow in the Parish Hall and everyone is invited! A devoted wife and mother, she delighted in family gatherings at her Lee County farm, the Kimble County ranch, and summers spent skiing and swimming at Lake Placid. She also generously volunteered her time at Guadalupe Regional Medical Center and on committees at Faith Lutheran Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her in-laws, Erna L. (Fischer) and Louis H. Lehmann; her sister, Mary Beth (Becker) Jenschke; sister-in-law Mavis Joyce Lehmann; and brother-in-law Delbert W. Lehmann.
Debbie is survived by her husband of 53 years, Clifford Ruben Lehmann; her sons, Todd Ruben Lehmann (Andrea) and Nicholas William Lehmann (Hollie Wells); her grandchildren, Brandon Karm (Rachel), Derrick Karm (Karla), and Miles Lehmann; her sister, Donna Becker (Arthur Moellering); her brother, Barry Becker; sister-in-law Evelyn Lehmann Peese; as well as her great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.

Moore
Mark Moore, age 74 of Seguin, passed away April 25, 2025. Mark was born on July 17,1950 to Lucile and Shipp Moore in Bay City, Texas. Mark met the love of his life in Genevieve Schwab, and they were married in 1980. In May of 1991 their son Kyle was born.
Mark was a 1968 graduate of Seguin High School, after high school he continued his education at Texas A&M University earning a degree in Biology. After graduation Mark took over a family business of Zella’s Liquor Store, which he ran for 45 years. When not at the store he enjoyed spending time outdoors, whether it was riding his road bike in many races, hiking the Sierra Nevada mountains with his friend Denver, or hunting with friends at the family ranch in Dilley; including the bi annual trip with childhood friends and many other guests that got added through the years. Mark also enjoyed working on the farm, taking his battle with mesquite trees very seriously, he also loved his time out around the cows.
Mark loved to travel, fueled by him attending 8 different school districts following his father around as he worked for Exxon-Mobil as a Geophysicist. Mark traveled to the pyramids in Egypt, Machu Pichu, Europe, went scuba diving at the Galapagos Islands, and many more adventures. Mark loved to tell stories of his travels and gave us all an opportunity to learn about the world through his eyes.
Mark is preceded in death by his loving wife of 39 years, Genevieve Moore, his mother, Lucile Moore, father, Shipp Moore, mother-in-law; Lulu Mae Schwab, father-in-law, Vernon Schwab, and brothers-in-law, Joe Mueller and Dudley Schwab.

All 50 States Agree To $7.4 Billion Settlement With OxyContin Manufacturer (Stamford, CT) -- Purdue Pharma is entering a seven-point-four-billion-dollar settlement with 55 U.S. states and territories. The states and territories accused the company behind OxyContin of fueling the nationwide opioid crisis by aggressively marketing its products. The settlement will also end the Sackler family’s ownership of Purdue Pharma. Money from the settlement will go state and local governments, individuals and Native American tribes. Since 1999 there have been more than 850-thousand opioid-related overdose deaths in the U.S., according to the CDC.

(Undated) -- A new study says kids exposed to PFAS before birth have a higher risk of high blood pressure in childhood, specifically during their teen years. PFAS are commonly known as “forever chemicals.” Teenage boys had a 17-percent increased risk of elevated blood pressure if their moms had high levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in blood samples taken after delivery. The Environmental Working Group says PFAS can be found in 99-percent of Americans, absorbed through what they eat, drink, breathe and touch. The Environmental Protection Agency says there are thousands of different PFA chemicals.
Sanders Backs Kennedy In Banning Drug Ads
(Washington, DC) -- Bernie Sanders is backing Robert F. Kennedy’s effort to end pharmaceutical advertising. Vermont’s Independent Senator and Maine’s Independent Senator Angus King introduced the “End Prescription Drug Ads Now Act,” which would ban prescription drug advertising on TV if passed. Sanders says the pharmaceutical industry spent more than five-billion-dollars on TV ads in 2024, contributing to the high price of healthcare. Health and Human Services Secretary Kennedy Jr. has expressed support for ending pharmaceutical advertising.
FDA Approves Expanded Use Of Moderna’s RSV
(Washington, DC) -- The FDA is expanding the approval of Moderna’s RSV vaccine. According to the company, the expansion will include individuals 18 to 59 years of age who are at increased risk for severe illness from respiratory syncytial virus. It was previously only licensed for adults aged 60 years and older. The expansion marks a win for Moderna after canceled HHS funding and setbacks due to Trump health officials’ distrust of messenger RNA-based vaccines.

The Independent Cattlemen’s Association of Texas will be hosting its 51st Annual ICA Convention and Trade Show from June 25 to 27 at the Embassy Suites in San Marcos, where newly appointed President Greg Seidenberger will be in attendance. A native of Seguin, Seidenberger is a Vietnam veteran, retired U.S. Air Force and American Airlines pilot, and former Guadalupe County Commissioner. He brings decades of agricultural experience and community leadership to his new role. Attendees are invited to meet and visit with President Seidenberger during the event.

Two-Day Paper Making Class at Seguin Art League
The Seguin Art League will be hosting a Two-Day Paper Making Class from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on June 26 and July 3 at the Seguin Art League Gallery, 104 S. Austin Street. Designed for adults ages 18 and older, this $60 workshop will guide participants through creating hand-made paper with decorative add-ins and deckled edges on the first day, followed by preparing the dried pages for use on the second. Freedom Fiesta Seeking Food, Craft, Game, and Non-Profit Vendors
Seguin Daily News / KWED will be hosting Freedom Fiesta at 6 p.m. on July 5 in downtown Seguin. Vendor applications are now open for food trucks, for-profit food and drink vendors, arts and crafts, games, and non-profit organizations. The fee is $250 for food trucks and food vendors, and $100 for drink vendors. All fees are non-refundable and must be paid to KWED upon signing the application. A $25 food permit is also required for all food and drink vendors and must be obtained separately from the City of Seguin by noon on June 20, 2025. Non-profit organizations are encouraged to participate and should contact KWED for additional setup details. Space is limited, and forms should be submitted as soon as possible. Join GCRW’s Kiddie Parade:
Kids are invited to participate in the Guadalupe County Republican Women Kiddie Parade, which kicks off KWED’s Freedom Fiesta on Saturday, July 5th at 6 PM on Donegan Street next to Seguin’s Central Park gazebo. Kids can ride in their strollers, on their bikes or scooters, in their motorized vehicles, or just march around Central Park following Uncle Sam (aka, Sheriff Joshua Ray) around the square. Seguin Art League Summer Art Camp – July Session
The Seguin Art League will be hosting a second session of the Wild Beasts: Animals in Folktales, Myth and Art Summer Art Camp from July 8 to July 11 at 104 S. CMA Summer Strings and Vocal Arts Camps
The TLU Community Music Academy will be hosting its Summer Strings and Vocal Arts Camps on July 14–18 at the TLU Schuech Fine Arts Center.
