Seguin ISD looks to name a possible superintendent finalist

(Seguin) – The Seguin ISD is set to consider naming a lone finalist for its next superintendent of schools. District officials say the board intends to vote on and name its top pick at tonight’s regular meeting. The district over the weekend announced that candidate interviews had been completed and that the district was on its way to naming new leadership. That person, however, will still have to wait for the state’s required 21 days before he or she can officially assume the position. The individual selected will replace former Superintendent Dr. Veronica Vijil who will retire at the end of the year. Cavco Homes of Texas rebrands as Cavco-Seguin
Local business reflects broader national strategy
(Seguin) -- What may seem like a minor shift in branding is representing a major milestone for one of Seguin’s largest employers. Cavco Homes of Texas has officially rebranded as Cavco-Seguin, aligning itself with a nationwide strategy by parent company Cavco Industries to unify its brand, streamline the homebuying process, and increase recognition of its affordable housing solutions across the country.
Cavco-Seguin, located at 2301 N. Highway 46, is one of 31 Cavco-owned facilities across the U.S. that are adopting this new unified brand identity.
Plant General Manager Layne Womble says rebranding to Cavco-Seguin is more than just a new name. He says it’s a symbol of their facility’s integral role in a larger mission to make affordable homeownership possible nationwide—while still maintaining our deep local roots.
“I think that the rebranding is just a strengthening and really develops national recognition because we were so many different names before. Now, every location is Cavco Seguin, Cavo Austin – it’s nationally recognized which makes it easier for the home buyer to make a purchase, find Cavco products and is certainly tailored toward first time home buyers,” said Womble.
Again, Womble says the move is designed to help homebuyers, dealers, developers, and communities better identify and access Cavco’s high-quality, affordable manufactured homes, regardless of geography.
Here in Seguin, the plant employs approximately 200 workers. Cavco Industries also supports around 800 additional employees across Texas, with locations in Waco, Austin, Fort Worth, and Presidio.
With rising demand for affordable homes, Womble says the company anticipates continued job creation in the region.
“The industry is very good, very strong. Some markets don’t have quite the sales volumes that others do. We are fortunate here at this facility to have one of the larger sales backlogs. The industry overall is strong and going forward, I think everyone will continue to address the affordable housing market at every segment – multifamily etc. Our industry is strong. We are obviously facing some challenges with tariffs and bank interest rates right now but beyond that, the industry is strong. There’s just so many good things you can say about it,” said Womble.
By streamlining its national identity, Cavco also positions itself to better compete in the digital marketplace—where customer experience and brand recognition are increasingly critical.
That’s according to Bill Boor, Cavco Industries’ president and CEO.
“This realignment to a single brand, based on product characteristics rather than plant-specific names, simplifies the homebuying journey and opens the door to new digital and national marketing opportunities,” said Boor. “It’s a big win for our customers, our retail partners, and Cavco as a whole.”
Since its founding in 1965 and with over one million homes built and sold, Cavco has grown into one of the largest and most respected names in factory-built housing. The brand is known for its innovative designs, quality craftsmanship, and customer-centric approach— all values that Womble says will continue at the Seguin location.

Seguin quarterback Corey Dailey will be a Pitt Panther
(Pittsburgh, PA) -- Incoming Seguin High School senior quarterback Corey Dailey has committed to the University of Pittsburgh.
Dailey made the announcement on social media on Saturday during an official visit to the school. Dailey chose Pitt over offers from Texas State, University of Texas San Antonio, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, Incarnate Word, Lamar, Fordham, San Diego State and Tulane.
Rated as a three-star prospect by various recruiting publications heading into his senior season, Dailey has thrown for 6,189 yards with 78 touchdowns and just 18 interceptions in three years as Seguin’s starting quarterback. As a junior in 2024, Dailey was named the District 13-5A Offensive MVP. Dailey threw for 2,529 yards with 35 touchdowns and just seven interceptions last season. On September 27th, Dailey had a career night going 25 of 33 for 471 yards and seven
touchdowns in a 73-66 Matador victory over Boerne Champion.
The Pitt Panthers compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Pitt had a Jekyll and Hyde year in 2024. The Panthers won their first seven games and moved up to No. 19 in the AP Poll. Pitt then lost their next six games including a 48-46 loss in six overtimes to Toledo in the GameAbove Sports Bowl. The six overtimes set the record for the most overtime periods in an FBS bowl game.
The Pitt Panthers are led by head coach Pat Narduzzi. In 10 years at Pitt, Narduzzi has compiled a 72-56 record.
Corey Dailey and the Seguin Matadors will open the 2025 season on August 29th at Alamo Heights. The Seguin football program is led by head coach Craig Dailey, Corey’s father and a former Seguin High School football quarterback who played at the college level at Texas Lutheran University.

Castulo “Ernest” Vega, Jr. of Seguin, Texas passed away peacefully on June 6, 2025. He was born on December 31, 1936, in La Vernia. He married the “love of his life” Clara Vega, in 1956. They had 57 years of marriage together!
Ernest built a career as a welder. He worked many years at Randolph and Kelly Air Force Base. He was a great man with amazing character, integrity, and a huge heart and gave generously. He was a wonderful role model,

Wayne M. Rucker, age 78 of Seguin, passed away on June 9, 2025. Wayne was born on March 27, 1947 in San Antonio, Texas, to Ruby (Uhl) and William Rucker.
Wayne was a 1965 graduate of Marshall High School in San Antonio, Texas. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. As an electrical contractor he owned and operated several businesses and worked for several different electrical companies. He and Gerry enjoyed travelling throughout the United States, but some of the best times were spent on the Texas Coast. Wayne and Gerry were active members of Grace Lutheran Church in Seguin.
He is preceded in death by his parents.

Lehmann
Deborah “Debbie” Ann Becker Lehmann, 75, of Seguin, Texas, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2025. She was born on August 1, 1949, at Keidel Memorial Hospital in Fredericksburg, Texas, to Mary Lucille (Stapp) and Leon Rudolph Becker.
Debbie was baptized at the Methodist Church in Junction and confirmed at the First Methodist Church in Fredericksburg in May 1963. Her father worked as a livestock inspector for the State of Texas took the family to Menard, San Angelo, San Saba, Brady, and finally back to Fredericksburg, where she completed her schooling.
After graduating from Fredericksburg High School in 1968, Debbie held positions at the Fredericksburg Bakery, Kendall Hodges (as a bookkeeper), and the Security State Bank. It was there, in 1970, that she met Clifford “Cliff” Ruben Lehmann and fell madly in love with him. They married on January 15, 1972, at the Fredericksburg First Methodist Church and moved to Seguin in 1973 when Cliff accepted a transfer with the Farmers Home Administration.
In Seguin, Debbie worked at the S & H Green Stamp store before finding her true calling at Emanuel’s Lutheran Montessori School. For 17 years she nurtured preschoolers—greeting them with hugs, smiles, and gentle encouragement as they transitioned from home to school. Former students still cherish the kindness and confidence she instilled during their formative years.
Debbie’s bright personality was infectious—she never met a stranger, and her
trusted counselor, and champion for our family. He was also an avid golfer and an experienced fisherman. He worked hard, had high expectations and provided a better living for his family. He was a wise man and read the newspaper and bible daily. We will miss his stories he started with, “I tell you...”
He leaves behind four children, seven grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren, neighbors and many friends.
A memorial service celebrating Castillo’s life will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2025 at St. James Catholic Church. We will have a Rosary, at 9:30am. The mass will begin at 10am and reception will follow in the Parish Hall and everyone is invited! radiant smile and hearty laugh lit up every room. You just couldn’t help but feel comfortable around her. She loved her “bling”. Anything to brighten up an outfit was a necessary accessory. A devoted wife and mother, she delighted in family gatherings at her Lee County farm, the Kimble County ranch, and summers spent skiing and swimming at Lake Placid. She also generously volunteered her time at Guadalupe Regional Medical Center and on committees at Faith Lutheran Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her in-laws, Erna L. (Fischer) and Louis H. Lehmann; her sister, Mary Beth (Becker) Jenschke; sister-in-law Mavis Joyce Lehmann; and brother-in-law Delbert W. Lehmann.
Debbie is survived by her husband of 53 years, Clifford Ruben Lehmann; her sons, Todd Ruben Lehmann (Andrea) and Nicholas William Lehmann (Hollie Wells); her grandchildren, Brandon Karm (Rachel), Derrick Karm (Karla), and Miles Lehmann; her sister, Donna Becker (Arthur Moellering); her brother, Barry Becker; sister-in-law Evelyn Lehmann Peese; as well as her great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.

Moore
Mark Moore, age 74 of Seguin, passed away April 25, 2025. Mark was born on July 17,1950 to Lucile and Shipp Moore in Bay City, Texas. Mark met the love of his life in Genevieve Schwab, and they were married in 1980. In May of 1991 their son Kyle was born.
Mark was a 1968 graduate of Seguin High School, after high school he continued his education at Texas A&M University earning a degree in Biology. After graduation Mark took over a family business of Zella’s Liquor Store, which he ran for 45 years. When not at the store he enjoyed spending time outdoors, whether it was riding his road bike in many races, hiking the Sierra Nevada mountains with his friend Denver, or hunting with friends at the family ranch in Dilley; including the bi annual trip with childhood friends and many other guests that got added through the years. Mark also enjoyed working on the farm, taking his battle with mesquite trees very seriously, he also loved his time out around the cows.
Mark loved to travel, fueled by him attending 8 different school districts following his father around as he worked for Exxon-Mobil as a Geophysicist. Mark traveled to the pyramids in Egypt, Machu Pichu, Europe, went scuba diving at the Galapagos Islands, and many more adventures. Mark loved to tell stories of his travels and gave us all an opportunity to learn about the world through his eyes.
Mark is preceded in death by his loving wife of 39 years, Genevieve Moore, his mother, Lucile Moore, father, Shipp Moore, mother-in-law; Lulu Mae Schwab, father-in-law, Vernon Schwab, and brothers-in-law, Joe Mueller and Dudley Schwab.
Survivors include his son, Kyle Moore (wife Krystin); granddaughter, Genevieve Rose Moore; sister, Margaret Mueller; brother-in-law, Robert Schwab; sisters-in-law, Janice Schwab-Mann and Tina Schwab; nephew, Paul Mueller (wife Karen); niece, Donna Hall (husband Syd); numerous other nieces and nephews, other loving family members and a host of friends.

Health Officials Warn Of Measles Case At Dulles Airport
(Dulles, VA) -- Health officials have issued warnings in the D.C. area about a traveler infected with measles who landed at Dulles International Airport and traveled throughout the area last week. The D.C. Health Department has listed on its website the various locations the person visited. The international traveler landed at Dulles on June 8th. Virginia health officials said they are working to identify people who may have been exposed. Health officials said there have been multiple measles cases in the D.C. area this year, including three reported cases in Virginia and another three in Maryland as of March.
Childhood Trauma Boosts Endometriosis Risk
(Stockholm, SE) -- A new study says childhood trauma can add to a woman’s risk of endometriosis later in life. Researchers reported in the Journal of Human Reproduction that women’s endometriosis risk jumped 20-percent if they had experienced childhood trauma like violence, sexual abuse, a death in the family, poverty or troubled parents. Violence created the strongest tie, more than doubling a woman’s chances of developing endometriosis. Researchers say the disease -- which is an inflammation of the inner lining of the uterus -- is common, affecting about one in every ten women, but its causes are still not fully understood.
Microbiome Tied To Memory Issues, Dementia In Parkinson’s Patients
(Bethesda, MD) -- A new study says a person’s microbiome - the bacteria naturally in the mouth and gut - may contribute to Parkinson’s disease. Researchers reported in the journal Gut Microbes that specific changes in these bacteria are linked to cognitive decline in Parkinson’s. Researchers found harmful bacteria moving from the mouth to the gut was linked to Parkinson’s patients going from mild memory issues to dementia. Parkinson’s is a brain disorder that can cause problems like shaking, stiffness and trouble with balance and coordination. The National Institute on Aging says as the disease progresses, patients are more likely to develop memory issues as well.
Beards May Be Dirty Or They May Not Be (Undated) -- How dirty are beards? Research has shown that beards often do indeed host dense microbial populations, bolstered by a moist place for them to thrive. It’s been an issue in the healthcare field, where there have been mixed-results over how hygienic beards are. Some early studies raised concerns that facial hair may be home to more harmful bacteria, but others have shown no difference between bearded and clean-shaven workers. If beards are cleaned regularly and well-maintained, it greatly reduces the chance for harmful bacteria to grow.

The Science Mill will be hosting Science Mill Summer STEM Immersion (SCI) Camp at 9 a.m. on June 24 at San Marcos CISD. This no-cost STEM camp is open to students in grades 3–12 and features a week of interactive projects that develop skills in science, technology, engineering, and math through an “apocalypse”-themed scenario.
Independent Cattlemen’s Association Names Greg Seidenberger
as President
The Independent Cattlemen’s Association of Texas will be hosting its 51st Annual ICA Convention and Trade Show from June 25 to 27 at the Embassy Suites in San Marcos, where newly appointed President Greg Seidenberger will be in attendance. A native of Seguin, Seidenberger is a Vietnam veteran, retired U.S. Air Force and American Airlines pilot, and former Guadalupe County Commissioner. He brings decades of agricultural experience and community leadership to his new role. Attendees are invited to meet and visit with President Seidenberger during the event.

Two-Day Paper Making Class at Seguin Art League
The Seguin Art League will be hosting a Two-Day Paper Making Class from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on June 26 and July 3 at the Seguin Art League Gallery, 104 S. Austin Street. Designed for adults ages 18 and older, this $60 workshop will guide participants through creating hand-made paper with decorative add-ins and deckled edges on the first day, followed by preparing the dried pages for use on the second. Freedom Fiesta Seeking Food, Craft, Game, and Non-Profit Vendors
Seguin Daily News / KWED will be hosting Freedom Fiesta at 6 p.m. on July 5 in downtown Seguin. Vendor applications are now open for food trucks, for-profit food and drink vendors, arts and crafts, games, and non-profit organizations. The fee is $250 for food trucks and food vendors, and $100 for drink vendors. All fees are non-refundable and must be paid to KWED upon signing the application. A $25 food permit is also required for all food and drink vendors and must be obtained separately from the City of Seguin by noon on June 20, 2025. Non-profit organizations are encouraged to participate and should contact KWED for additional setup details. Space is limited, and forms should be submitted as soon as possible. Join GCRW’s Kiddie Parade:
Kids are invited to participate in the Guadalupe County Republican Women Kiddie Parade, which kicks off KWED’s Freedom Fiesta on Saturday, July 5th at 6 PM on Donegan Street next to Seguin’s Central Park gazebo. Kids can ride in their strollers, on their bikes or scooters, in their motorized vehicles, or just march around Central Park following Uncle Sam (aka, Sheriff Joshua Ray) around the square. Seguin Art League Summer Art Camp – July Session
The Seguin Art League will be hosting a second session of the Wild Beasts: Animals in Folktales, Myth and Art Summer Art Camp from July 8 to July 11 at 104 S. Austin St. The camp runs from 10 a.m. to noon for ages 5 to 9, and 1 to 3 p.m. for ages 10 and older. Students will engage in creating bold and imaginative animal-themed art inspired by myth, folktale, and the wild style of the French “Fauves.” The cost is $125, and supplies are included. Each

The Guadalupana Society of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church will be hosting an Indoor Flea Market at 9 a.m. on July 12 at the Parish Hall, located at 409 W. Krezdorn St. in Seguin. CMA Summer Strings and Vocal Arts Camps
The TLU Community Music Academy will be hosting its Summer Strings and Vocal Arts Camps on July 14–18 at the TLU Schuech Fine Arts Center. The Strings Camp will run from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and includes instruction in violin, cello, and orchestra (no guitar). The Vocal Arts Camp will take place from 1:30 to 5:00 p.m. Both camps are open to students in grades 2–6 and welcome beginners. The Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce will be hosting the 2025 Texas Women of Influence Conference on July 31 at Geronimo Oaks Weddings and Events Venue, located at 1377 Dietert Road in Seguin. Organized by the Chamber’s Women’s Conference Planning Committee, the event aims to celebrate and empower women leaders across Texas.
