(Seguin) — With the first day of school just around the corner, Communities In Schools of South Central Texas is calling on residents in Seguin, Schertz and Cibolo to help fill backpacks.
The nonprofit’s annual Pack the Bus school supply drive will be held Saturday, Aug. 1, at H-E-B stores in Seguin, Schertz and Cibolo, as well as locations in New Braunfels and Bulverde.
The drive benefits students throughout the region, including those attending schools in Seguin, Schertz-Cibolo and other surrounding districts served by Communities In Schools of South Central Texas. Donations collected will be distributed throughout the school year as student needs arise.
Organizers say the annual campaign provides thousands of students with essential school supplies, hygiene products and other necessities that help remove barriers to learning. Organizers say as enrollment continues to grow across South Central Texas, the need for community support has also increased.
Among the most-needed donations are wide-ruled composition books, plastic folders with brads and pockets, clear backpacks, reusable water bottles, earbuds or headphones, dry-erase markers, colored pencils, pencil bags, scissors, undergarments, individually packaged snacks and hygiene items such as soap, shampoo, deodorant, feminine hygiene products and lice treatment kits.

(Seguin) — A recent social media post by the Guadalupe County Children’s Advocacy Center is highlighting the growing financial challenges facing local families as well as a closer look at the behindthe-scenes support that the nonprofit provides well after child abuse is reported.
The center recently shared the story of a family in crisis on its Facebook page. It read We have a family in need! we don’t normally do this, but we have been calling on so many resources with no luck. Will you make a one time donation on our website gccac.net to support a mother and her four children who have no where to go right now?”
In addition to the one time help for this family of five, the post
was also encouraging donations to its client aid fund, which provides emergency financial assistance for families served by the organization when other resources are unavailable.
Executive Director Christy Williams says the center created the fund specifically to help families overcome financial barriers that often follow reports of child abuse.
“We have a fund that we raise funds specifically to assist families,” said Williams. “We make sure that they are linked up with as many resources as we possibly can here in the community, and when we can’t find a resource that will support them, that’s when we dig into that fund.”
Williams says the advocacy center previously held a bowling
fundraiser dedicated to the client aid fund, but that event was no longer generating enough support and has not been held in about 18 months. Despite no longer doing the fundraiser, she says the organization has continued to help families meet urgent needs.
However before providing direct financial assistance, she says the center first connects families with agencies such as the Salvation Army, Community Council of South Central Texas (RECAP), Christian Cupboard and the New Braunfels Food Bank.
But like many nonprofits, Williams says they “too are facing increased demand as families struggle with today’s economic conditions.”

(Seguin) — A Broadway classic is making its way to Seguin this weekend as Christian Community Theater brings Fiddler on the Roof to the stage at Texas Lutheran University’s Jackson Auditorium.
The production, presented by Christian Community Theater (CCT), a program of Christian Youth Theater (CYT), will be performed today through Sunday, Aug. 2.
Megan Gullion, artistic director for CYT, says the organization is dedicated to helping young people grow both on and off the stage.
“We are part of Christian Community Theater, which is a program of Christian Youth Theater. We’re based out of New Braunfels, Texas, and we provide quality theater arts training for mostly kids, but then in the summertime, we do community shows where we get to include adults as well,” said Gullion.

Bus, continued.
“As our communities continue to grow, so does the number of students who rely on Pack the Bus,” said Susan Wetz, CEO of Communities In Schools of South Central Texas. “When you donate school supplies or make a financial gift, you’re providing much more than notebooks and pencils. You’re giving students confidence, reducing stress for families…”
In addition to donating supplies at H-E-B on Aug. 1, community members can also make financial contributions or drop off school supplies at collection sites including several locations in Guadalupe County.
Local collection sites include First United Bank branches in Seguin, Schertz and Garden Ridge, Old Republic Title in Seguin, Prosperity Bank in Seguin, Schertz Bank branches in Seguin and Schertz, and the Seguin and Schertz public libraries.
Another way to give is through H-E-B’s register donation campaign. From July 29 through Aug. 25, customers shopping in-store or online at H-E-B locations across Texas can donate any amount at checkout, with
Center, continued.
“I have always gotten requests from our staff to support families, but I am getting them much more regularly now and much more urgently,” said Williams. “We’re having clients facing eviction because they are not able to keep up. Between our fund and all of the resources in the community, we’ve been able to help, but what we’re seeing now is that people are just really, really struggling. I don’t really think people know that.”

proceeds benefiting Communities In Schools programs serving K-12 students in nearby school districts. For more information about Pack the Bus or to make a financial contribution, visit the Communities In Schools of South Central Texas website.
Williams says unforuantley those financial hardships can become yet another obstacle for children who need to report abuse.
“We’re here and we’re talking to them, and it’s a confidential situation where they are bearing their soul to us,” said Williams. “It’s also those economic things. These are all barriers to kids telling about what’s happening if they know that without this person their bills aren’t going to be paid and they’re not going to have a place to live. That’s all the more reason for
kids not to talk about what’s been going on with them. So if there’s any way that we can help to make sure that kids can say that something’s happening to them and then also not be homeless, by all means, that’s what we need to do.”
The Guadalupe County Children’s Advocacy Center is accepting donations to its client aid fund through links available on its website and social media pages. Donations can also be made by calling 830-303-4760.

Fiddler, continued.
Gullion says this year’s summer production is one she hopes audiences of all ages will enjoy.
“The show is all about faith, love, family and tradition, and it’s a great show to take the whole family to,” said Gillian.
Plus, she says there’s just something special about experiencing live theater together.
“It’s so much fun to see live theater in such a beautiful space and we just hope that everyone will come out and see the show and support our amazing cast,” said Gullion.
Beyond this weekend’s performances, Gullion says the organization offers opportunities for local families interested in theater arts throughout the year.
“So in the summertime, when we get to do our community theater productions, we usually have auditions for that in the spring,” said Gullion. “And if you’re a student, from the ages of 4 to 18, we have classes year-round. Starting in the fall, we actually have classes
registering right now.”
She says students between the ages of 8 and 18 also have the opportunity to audition for upcoming productions.
“And if you are between the ages of 8 and 18, you can audition for our shows,” said Gullion. “In the fall, we have two shows coming up. We’ve got Hadestown: Teen Edition. That show’s for our teens ages 13 to 18. And then we have The Little Mermaid Jr., which will be for ages 8 to 18.”
CYT’s mission is to develop character and creativity through quality theater arts training that brings families and communities together while reflecting Jesus.
Performances of Fiddler on the Roof are scheduled for 7 p.m. July 31, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Aug. 1, and 3 p.m. Aug. 2 at TLU’s Jackson Auditorium.
Advance tickets are available online, with tickets also available at the door. To learn more about future performances, classes and auditions visit the organization at CYTSanAntonio.org/shows.

Cyclosporiasis Linked To “Explosive Diarrhea” Spreads To 45 States
(Atlanta, GA) -- Cyclosporiasis, the parasitic infection linked to “explosive diarrhea,” has now spread to 45 states. There’ve been 67-hundred lab-confirmed cases, so far, with the CDC saying it’s investigating more than eleven-thousand others. It also says at least 423 people have been hospitalized but there’ve been no deaths. The outbreak, which is caused by ingesting food or water that contains cyclospora bacteria, began three months ago. The federal health agency says the only states that haven’t reported any cases are Maine, South Carolina, Montana, New Mexico and Hawaii.
Toddler Food Failing Nutrition Standards
(Austin, TX) -- A new study analyzing toddler food items show that four out of five products are ultra-processed. Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin, found that 81-percent of toddler food products were ultra-processed and 49-percent failed to meet at least one World Health Organization nutrient recommendation for children ages 6 to 36 months. They analyzed more than two-thousand toddler food products such as fruit pouches, oat bars and snack puffs. The findings come as the FDA considers new rules for marking and nutrition labeling of foods for children.
(Bethesda, MD) -- Lidl is recalling cookies distributed to all its U.S. locations due to undeclared allergens. According to the FDA, the Eridanous Shortbread Cookies with Chocolate Truffle Coating and Apricot Filling were recalled because the packaging was in another language and failed to indicate in English that they contain wheat, soy, milk and eggs. The cookies were distributed in states including Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and the District of Columbia. Customers are advised to return the recalled product to a Lidl store for a refund.
(Columbus, OH) -- A dermatologist at Ohio State University is raising awareness of the risk of skin cancer from sun and tanning salon exposure. Dr. Spencer Dunaway thinks the younger generation is ignoring or is unaware of the risks of long-term UV radiation. He says there’s clear evidence that tanning at an early age dramatically increases the risk of skin cancer, premature aging and the development of sunspots. He says tanning beds cause cancer, with evidence showing that those who use them as teens are much more likely to become life long tanners.
