Camp Broadway Kids present “9 to 5” at Texas Theatre

(Seguin) -- A popular 1980’s movie is being brought to the stage at the Texas Theatre, thanks to a large group of talented kids. The live-stage production of “9 to 5” is being presented by students participating in this year’s Camp Broadway.

Show Director Aidan Martinez says they had dozens of kids sign up for this year’s summer camp, and he thinks that audiences will be impressed with this year’s show.

“Camp Broadway is a yearly theater camp that we do at the Texas Theatre here in Seguin. We’ve been doing it since I started as a camper, actually, and now I’m a show director. This is my eighth year directing Camp Broadway shows. It’s just the way that we get to help Seguin grow in the arts and help establish these young thespians,” said Martinez.

Movies in the Park returns Friday with Disney’s Lilo & Stitch

(Seguin) — Families are invited to enjoy a free evening of outdoor entertainment this Friday as the Seguin Parks and Recreation Department continues its Movies in the Park series.

Friday night’s showing features Disney’s Lilo & Stitch at Seguin’s Park West.

Nikki Berry with the Seguin Parks and Recreation Department says this week’s event marks the final summer movie before students head back to school.

“There will be one more this fall. This will be our last summer movie before everyone goes back

to school, so come on out. Come watch Lilo & Stitch with us, so we’re excited,” said Berry.

In addition to the movie, Berry says families can arrive early to take advantage of the free activities planned before the feature presentation.

“We’re going to have lots of games and activities before the movie starts, so come on out there and join us,” said Berry.

The free games and activities will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. The movie will begin at dusk. Families are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs.

Kingsbury VFD prepares for 56th Annual BBQ Fundraiser this Saturday

(Kingsbury) — One of Kingsbury’s longest running traditions returns this weekend. The Kingsbury Volunteer Fire Department is inviting families from across Guadalupe County and the surrounding area for its 56th Annual BBQ Fundraiser this Saturday.

Katie Younger, secretary for the Kingsbury Volunteer Fire Department, says the event is more than just a fundraiser.

“It helps us getting to know everyone in our community, even if we don’t get calls to that particular place. It still gives us a chance to meet everyone in our community and outside of our community. We get people from Seguin, New Braunfels, San Marcos, Luling, Gonzales — everyone from around — to come and get to know everyone. I think that’s the best part to me,” said Younger.

Preparations for the event actually begin Friday as volunteers gather to cook the food overnight.

Barbecue plates will be served from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Plates are $15 each.

Guests can also enjoy a live auction, a silent auction, vendor market, bake sale plus a gun raffle. Tickets will be $20 each.

The evening will wrap up will a free dance beginnning at 9 p.m. Live music will be provided by Clint Taft and the Buckwild Band.

Younger says the department is excited about welcoming new volunteers and hopes that folks will stop by and learn more about department’s future.

“I would just come out and have a great time. We do have a lot of new people helping with the barbecue this year, so that’s a good time to come meet everyone new that’s helping with it. It’s also a really good time to hang out with everyone. I would encourage everyone to come out, have a great time, have some good barbecue and just enjoy it,” said Younger.

The Kingsbury Volunteer Fire Department is located at 6205 FM 1103 in Kingsbury.

Theatre, continued.

Martinez says it takes a lot of hard work to bring all of this together. The kids basically have less than two weeks to pull all of this together, so that it can be performed for the public.

“It takes us a good minute to get into the rhythm of rehearsals and directing and delegating, but once we get our flow, everything just works out so perfectly. And I’m grateful that we, after doing this for so many years, have found our flow and our rhythm,” said Martinez.

Cast member Caylee Dwyer, who plays the role made famous by Dolly Parton, says she hopes everyone comes out to see them perform this exciting musical. Dwyer, who never seems to get out of character, says audiences will enjoy this performance.

“You want to come to the theater and you want to see our amazing show, that took us only two weeks. It was only two weeks. And we put in so much effort so you would enjoy our show. And I want you to come to our show so you can come into the theater and then you can just embrace the magic of what being a thespian is and embrace everything that we have worked hard for. So you can just come into the world, Dolly’s world of 9 to 5, and you can just soak in all of the wonderful magic that we have for you,” said Dwyer.

The Junior version of “9 to 5” musical, which removes some of the adult themes from the movie, will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with a 2:30 p.m. matinee on Sunday. Tickets to the show are now available through the Texas Theatre’s website, at thetexas.org.

According to officials, “many of the additional cases have been reported by Michigan and Ohio,” but the FDA maintains that while dozens of states are impacted, the outbreak investigation has been predominately linked to “at least” five states: Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky. Other states such as North Carolina and Kansas have also seen a recent spike in cases. Cyclosporiasis cases are typically reported between May and August each year, but it is usually only a handful or a few dozen.
