Former Guadalupe County United Way leader faces theft charges Darren Dunn

(Seguin) -- The former executive director of the Guadalupe County United Way is now behind bars, accused of stealing funds from the local nonprofit organization.

The case is being investigated by the Seguin Police Department. Police say 65-year-old Mary Lou Hargrave has been arrested and charged with theft of property valued between $150,000 and $300,000. Hargrave turned herself in at the Guadalupe County Sheriff ’s Office on December 23 and was immediately booked into the Guadalupe County Jail.

The Seguin Police Department issued a press release on Tuesday that stated the investigation has been going on for months.

“On July 23, 2025, the Seguin Police Department was contacted by the president of the board for the Guadalupe County United Way regarding missing fiduciary funds from the organization’s operational account. At that time, the nonprofit organization had retained a forensic Theft charges, pg. 3

New Year brings reminder of fireworks safety Darren Dunn

Guadalupe County Fire Marshal Patrick Pinder says there are a number of things that you need to consider before purchasing and using fireworks.

“Make sure when you’re buying fireworks, you’re buying them from a licensed retail vendor. You’re not just buying them from some resident or something on Facebook. You also want to make sure that when you’re handling fireworks, you’re doing it safely. When you light a firework, you want to make sure that you get safely away from it. If it doesn’t go off, we want to make sure that you don’t try to walk back up and relight that firework. Just let that thing sit for a little bit, because you have to remember, some of these fireworks sit in these stands for extended periods of time, and they don’t sell them from the last season — they’re still in the stand. So you don’t know how old they are. And make sure you’re doing them in a clear, open area and not around high grass. We’ve had the burn ban on for a while. We did ban the sticksand-fins type of fireworks, so you won’t be able to get the bottle rockets and some of the aerial fireworks that you’re usually seeing in the stand.

Just make sure you’re being safe and always have some water available just in case that firework gets out of control. And when you’re done shooting the fireworks, just let it sit there a little bit before you put it in the trash can, because we’ve seen that where they’ve caught trash cans

on fire and caused more damage,” said Pinder.

Conditions remain very dry across the area, and Pinder warns that people need to be mindful of where and how they are using their fireworks.

“You want to make sure that you’re in a clear, open area. You want to make sure you’re not around tall grass. And check your wind speeds, because if you’re out in the rural areas, sometimes that wind is a little higher. And if you shoot one of those aerial fireworks up, you think it’s just going to go right there. Well, if you’ve got a hay bale next door or a hay field or any kind of grass that’s dry already, you can catch a field on fire pretty quickly. The other thing you want to make sure of is that you keep an eye on your pets. My dog doesn’t like fireworks, so if I try to light a firework off in my front yard, the dog’s going to try to either run after the firework or take off running. So just make sure you’re keeping all animals away and small children supervised. Make sure they’re not lighting the fireworks without supervision,” said Pinder.

Fireworks can be used in the more rural parts of Guadalupe County, and aerial fireworks, like bottle rockets, should not be used. The possession and use of fireworks inside local city limits is strictly prohibited, and those who violate those rules could face stiff fines.

A new future is on the horizon for United Way Darren Dunn

(New Braunfels) -- United Way will continue to have a strong presence in Guadalupe County. United Way of Comal County (UWCC) is stepping in and will soon be expanding its territory into Guadalupe County.

UWCC Executive Director Terry Robinson says they are excited to be able to service both counties.

“We have been kind of hoping for a long time to be able to combine our communities. So what we are doing is, we’re just expanding our territory. We are not picking up everything that has gone on with United Way of Guadalupe County. From my understanding, they will be shutting down their doors, and they have formally released — in the United Way network — their service area. Our United Way Board of Directors, who really are the driving force behind everything we do, sat down and have had conversations for the last couple of months and said we would love to expand our territory,” said Robinson.

Robinson says for 80 years, UWCC has provided deep and meaningful support to those in need in Comal County.

She says it now makes sense that they will also be picking up and continuing those services in Guadalupe County.

“I have so many friends that live in Guadalupe County and so many friends that live here but work in Guadalupe County. And I’m in and out of there quite frequently. We’re members of the Chamber. We do so many things collectively.

Many of the agencies that we have been funding for many, many years also provide the same services in Guadalupe County. And it’s always been tough for them when they seek grants to say, ‘okay, I’m only covering these people because it’s the funds from Comal County.’ Now we’re going to be able to say that we’re going to support them for the people that live in both counties,” said Robinson.

The move was created after the Guadalupe County

United Way decided to dissolve its operation and release its service area. Robinson says they are excited about the expansion into Guadalupe County, but she knows there’s some organizational work that still needs to be done.

“It’s going to take us a little bit of time to raise funds to be able to provide those grants to them. And I’m hoping the community will be patient while we do that growth. We’re looking at bringing on a few people from Guadalupe County to join the board now and expanding that number as time goes on. We are bringing in United Way of Texas in February to do a big strategic planning session to help us figure out how to do this. We don’t want to come in and dictate, this is how we’re doing things. We want to get all of the input from our supporters in both counties to help us figure out how to make this work. And that’s in both the grants that we give out and the fundraising that we do,” said Robinson.

While the group works on its long-term plans for the expansion, Robinson says there will still be ways for people to immediately show their support for the work done by the United Way. “In the short term, if donors want to support this United Way that we’re merging together, they can certainly write a check to the United Way of Comal County. They can go online to our website at uwcomal.org and make a donation.

And in the notes, they can say they want it to go to support the growth into Guadalupe County. I don’t know when — and again, this is all going to be in our strategic plan — when or how we’re going to start giving out grants. We’re on a different cycle than what Guadalupe County has historically been. So that’s kind of in the long term how we’re going to tackle that, how the volunteer board of directors is going to decide. But in the meantime, if they would like to contribute, that’s going to go a long way in helping us be able to start getting those grants out to those agencies that are in need,” said Robinson.

Robinson says they know that help is needed in Guadalupe County. She says that’s why any contributions would be helpful during this transition period.

“We are already getting calls from people that need help with food on the table, utility assistance with this cold front that we’ve had coming in, and even rental assistance. So if people want to contribute, that’s, I think, the real big area right at this moment, because those are the calls we’re getting right at this moment,” said Robinson.

Jenna Vinson, board president of United Way of Comal County, says this decision was not made lightly or quickly by their board. She says the board took time to analyze the situation and make sure that UWCC could adequately serve both counties. She says they are proud to take this additional step to serve and support residents in both Comal and Guadalupe counties.

Theft charges, continued. accountant to conduct a review of its First United Bank accounts after the executive director, Mary Lou Hargrave, a 65-year-old female from Utah, became uncooperative and several unauthorized transactions were discovered,” stated the release.

“The forensic review revealed that between December 2023 and June 2025, unauthorized transactions totaling just over $158,000 occurred. The report indicated the executive director, Mary Lou Hargrave, conducted unauthorized debit card purchases, cash withdrawals, issued checks payable to herself, and generated additional payroll checks payable to herself without authorization. The audit further revealed that more than $117,000 was transferred without board approval from the Guadalupe County United Way’s money market account into the operational account to cover the costs associated with Hargrave’s spending.”

Detectives say that the transactions began after Hargrave relocated to Utah and began working remotely.

United Way since 2018 and was said to be familiar with the organization’s day-to-day operations and annual audit requirements.

“After detectives with the Seguin Police Department conducted a thorough investigation and interviewed Mary Lou Hargrave, as well as several other individuals, it was determined that sufficient evidence existed to pursue criminal charges. As a result, Mary Lou Hargrave was charged with theft of property greater than or equal to $150,000 but less than $300,000 from a nonprofit organization. An arrest warrant was issued on December 10, 2025. Earlier this month, Hargrave was located in Amarillo, Texas, and was taken into custody before being transported to the Guadalupe County Jail.”

While law enforcement officials continue to work the case, there is also new information regarding the future of United Way services in Guadalupe County. The United Way of Comal County (UWCC) is expanding its service area to include Guadalupe County — a move intended to ensure critical community needs continue to be met locally.

Seguin PD urges people to stay safe, sober for the New Year’s holiday Darren Dunn

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Police Department says to have a plan if you plan on going out to celebrate the New Year’s holiday.

Public Engagement Officer Stephanie Larrimore says you should make a plan before you head out on New Year’s Eve. “As you’re celebrating the new year, do so safely.

We encourage people not to drink and drive. I mean, I understand that’s one of the things people tend to do is drink,” said Larrimore.

“We just like for people to be cautious about drinking and driving, whether it’s planning ahead and getting yourself a designated driver, using a rideshare, or even just

staying at somebody’s house, depending on where you’re at. With New Year’s, it’s midnight, you’re celebrating, there’s fireworks, and by the time you notice, it’s one or two o’clock in the morning before you decide to even leave some of these places. And we just encourage people to take precautions.”

Law enforcement agencies will be beefing up their patrols in an attempt to keep people safe. Larrimore says it’s not just drunk driving that you need to be worried about if you’re out late. She says road construction and fireworks usage will also be things to consider.

“Seguin has had quite a few accidents over the last couple of months, and they have increased. We will have additional officers on the streets, not only to address the fireworks issue, but also accidents and drunk driving. I just want people to also understand that with fireworks comes smoke. So just try to be very cautious, especially on those county roads. There’s a lot of heavy smoke in the area, and that will reduce your visibility. I remember when I was working nights, heading to and from different parts of town, there were certain areas that I could see perfectly fine. Then when I got to areas of town where people had been popping fireworks, it was very hard to see the roadway,” said Larrimore.

Experts say drunk driving crashes are completely preventable, and they can produce problems, including financial issues, that last for years. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, a DWI can cost up to $17,000 in fines and fees and lead to jail time, loss of a driver’s license, difficulty finding or keeping a job, loss of trust from loved ones, and a lifetime of regret.

James Martin Moeller, age 79 of Seguin, passed away on December 20, 2025. James was born in Seguin, Texas on October 15, 1946, to Lola Alma (Bode) and Martin Alex Moeller. He married Virginia (Kay) Moeller on December 22, 1968.

James was a member of the Seguin High School Class of 1964 and member of the marching band.

James enjoyed many activities throughout his lifetime including, helping with the rodeos at the Bode rodeo arena. He loved his time coaching pony league and little league baseball and playing men’s softball for many years.

James’ work career included Seguin Enterprise where among other things, he captured many photographs of local events, especially sporting events. He then began working for the City of Seguin at the power plant for several years. From there, he worked at United Cotton Goods until their doors closed. That began his final work destination at Seguin Independent School District as warehouse supervisor where he retired after 20 years.

He enjoyed all the good times spent among family and friends. The times hunting, fishing, shrimp boils and just shooting the “shit”. But, his favorite times were spent supporting his grandchildren in all their activities, whether it be

Joan Mayer Jahns, age 86 of Seguin, passed away on December 25, 2025. Joan was born on September 13, 1939, in Arlington, Texas, to Vera Lillian (Schlueter) and Eugene August Mayer.

Joan and Benny were active members of First United Methodist Church in Seguin where they were long time members of the Paulist Class. She always played the piano to open the class with hymns alongside Charlie Richey who sang. Joan was also active in the Church Choir and played the handbells.

matched only by the love he held for his family. As we reflect on Chris’s life, we celebrate not only his adventurous pursuits but also the deep connections he formed with his loved ones.

He is survived by his devoted children, Derick, Kaison, Capri, Marley, and Charlee Herbold, each carrying a piece of his adventurous spirit within them. His mother, Tami Herbold and husband William Newberg, and his father, Alfredo Sanchez and wife Brenda Sanchez, stood proudly in his corner throughout his life. Chris also shared a special bond with his siblings; his sister Kristen Jahns and her husband Clint Jahns, as well as his sister Ciera Sanchez and brother AD Sanchez. He was a cherished uncle to Kendall Hurt and Caiden Jahns, and beloved grandson to Margaret Herbold and her husband Ruben Sanchez along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who created countless memories with him.

Though he is mourned by many, Chris is greeted in the beyond by those who passed before him, including his grandfather Texas John Herbold, stepfather Ricky Risinger, uncle Roger Herbold, aunt Wesley Shehane, cousin John Derick Herbold, and great-grandparents Milton and Catherine Krueger.

His legacy of love, laughter, and an insatiable appetite for life will inspire all who knew him to embrace each day with passion and joy. May he rest in peace, his spirit soaring high like the waves crashing along the shores of Kona, Hawaii.

A celebration of life ceremony will be announced at a later date.

Christopher Brian Herbold, affectionately known to those who loved him as Chris, was born on February 3, 1984, in Seguin, Texas. He left this world on October 9, 2025, in beautiful Kona, Hawaii. Chris’s journey through life can be described as one marked by boundless energy, a thirst for adventure, and a spirit that ignited joy in all who had the privilege of knowing him.

After graduating from Seguin High School, Chris took a courageous step that would shape his future; he moved to Austin, Texas, where he began training to become an MMA fighter. Following this chapter, he spent several fulfilling years in Washington State, where he immersed himself in the great outdoors. Whether he was traversing hiking trails, gliding on a skateboard, conquering snow-covered slopes, cliff diving into refreshing waters, or racing on his BMX bike, his passion for the natural world was evident.

Chris’s zest for life ultimately led him to Kona, Hawaii, where he embraced an adventurous lifestyle surrounded by the beauty of nature and cherished moments spent with family.

Chris’s spirit was infectious, and his smile, contagious. How blessed are we to have someone that makes saying goodbye so hard. His love for adventure was

Roy Lee Caudill, age 81 of McQueeney, passed away on December 25, 2025. Roy was born on January 18, 1944. Roy will be remembered as a former employee of SMI where he worked as an electrician for 36 years.

Roy was adventurous, funny and creative. He loved to travel to new places. With every encounter, one was sure to get a joke and a laugh. He loved his family and friends and always gave of himself to help others when he could. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend.

Farrell “Spitzie” Ullrich, age 91, of Seguin, Texas, passed away on December 26, 2025. Born on October 14, 1934, in San Antonio, Texas, he was the son of Berthold Adolph Otto and Emma Augusta (Schmid) Ullrich Spitzie was a Charter member of Faith Lutheran Church. He was a barber by trade, a profession he practiced with pride and dedication over the years.

He was known for his steady hands, signature flattops, and the care he took with everyone who sat in his barber chair. Outside of work, he had a lifelong enjoyment of race cars, horses, cattle, and farming.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Gary Ullrich and his twin brother, Jarrell “Dickie” Ullrich; his sister, Shirley Ullrich; and his sister-inlaw, Karen Ullrich.

Jane Bierstedt passed away December 15, 2025, at the age of 90 years old.

Jane was born on January 20, 1935, in Farwell, Texas to Hertha Alva Bode McQuatters and Otis Roy McQuatters.

Jane attended Seguin High School and enjoyed a 30 plus year career employed with Southwestern Bell Telephone and AT&T. She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter Sheron Ann Manning and her great grandson Klayton Manning.

She is survived and is lovingly remembered by her husband of 61 years, Alton Bierstedt; son Aaron Bierstedt (Kimberly); grandchildren Brittany Wilkinson

Margarett Svatek, age 79 of Seguin, passed away on November 23, 2025.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2026, from 2 to 5 p.m. with remarks at 3 p.m.

Survey Reveals Diet And Exercise Helps Many With Sleep (Darien, Ill) -- Two popular New Years resolutions involving diet and exercise help many with better sleep. That’s according to an American Academy of Sleep Medicine survey this year of over two thousand U.S. adults. The survey shows 59 percent of respondents say a wellbalanced diet helps them sleep better. Also, 42 percent report better sleep after morning workouts while 46 percent see improvements from evening exercise.

ADHD Meds May Work Differently Than Thought (Undated) -- Prescription stimulants like Ritalin and Adderall seem to work on the brain differently than previously thought. That’s according to a new study that finds that the ADHD medications makes people more alert and interested in tasks, rather than improving their overall focus. The drugs activate the parts of the brain that make a task a child otherwise struggles with more rewarding. Researchers also found that stimulants mimicked the effect of good sleep, canceling out the effects of sleep deprivation. The study was published in the journal Cell.

2nd Legionnaires Death At NJ Hospital (Paterson, NJ) -- There’s been a second Legionnaires death at a New Jersey hospital already under investigation by the state Health Department.

The patient was being treated at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Paterson. The hospital says both patients had significant underlying health conditions. The first patient’s death prompted a probe into the hospital’s water system last month which turned up legionella bacteria. Water tanks and water lines are being cleaned and treated. Meantime, the hospital has notified more than 220 former patients about the potential risk for infection.

Strategies For Preventing Destination Constipation (New York, NY) -- So-called “Destination Constipation” is a common problem for travelers. But Samantha Cassetty, a well-known registered dietician in New York City, says there are strategies you can use to avoid getting backed up. She notes that planes are dehydrating, so she recommends drinking a lot of water. She also suggests upping your fiber intake which includes whole grains, nuts, seeds, fruits and veggies.
