City Reflects on Successful Holiday Celebrations in Downtown Seguin Darren Dunn

(Seguin) -- The City of Seguin helped residents celebrate the holidays in a big way this year. The Seguin City Council recently reflected on the success of this year’s holiday events in downtown Seguin.

Councilman Jason Biesenbach says this year’s Cocoa Sip N’ Stroll was one of the highlights during the events held earlier this month. It has always been a popular event, but it was starting to experience some growing pains. Biesenbach says those challenges were addressed this year, which greatly improved the overall event.

“We’ve been going down as a family to Sip N’ Stroll for I don’t know how many years now, and this was by far the most amazing Sip N’ Stroll that we’ve been to. Since they closed down Austin Street, it completely changed the feel of Sip N’ Stroll. Last year, when we went, it just didn’t really feel fun, honestly, because there were so many people down there.

You couldn’t negotiate the sidewalks, even in the downtown courtyard area.

City Officials Encourage Motorists to Slow Down, Stay Safe

(Seguin) -- The increasing number of accidents along busy local roadways, including Interstate 10, has led local officials to encourage motorists to do all they can to stay safe.

The issue was briefly brought up during the last meeting of the Seguin City Council. Although the item wasn’t on the agenda, Councilman Jim Lievens shared his thoughts during the Citizens to Be Heard portion of the meeting. Construction in the area, higher traffic counts, and high rates of speed are likely contributing factors to the increase in serious accidents.

“Construction is a wonderful thing, is it not? It will bring new roads, it’ll bring new businesses and what have you. But guys, I don’t know about you all. I hear it from constituents. I see and hear it myself too. I’m a little concerned about the number of accidents we’re seeing along I-10 and (State Highway) 46. I’m not sure about accidents on (State Highway) 123, but I know there is heavy traffic congestion there as well. And my main hope and prayer for this community is that, especially during this season of joy, that we all, as motorists, take our time to drive defensively, to be aware of what’s around us, and

to try to drive within the proper speed limits, because there’s just too much sadness going on with the number of accidents that we’re seeing,” said Lievens.

Mayor Donna Dodgen said she understands those concerns and noted that they were shared and discussed during recent meetings she attended with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (AAMPO).

“I echo what Jim says about us being defensive drivers and slowing down. We talked about some of that and looked at some of those things. So, it is a real concern, and they did hear us about that,” said Dodgen.

The renewed focus on roadway safety comes amid a string of serious crashes in the area, particularly along Interstate 10 and Highway 46. Several of those accidents have resulted in fatalities and prolonged road closures lasting hours at a time, significantly disrupting travel and raising concerns for both motorists and first responders.

Officials continue to urge drivers to slow down, remain alert, and exercise extra caution, especially in construction zones, as efforts continue to prevent further tragedies on these heavily traveled roadways.

It was maddening. So, the fact that Austin Street was closed down and the lines were able to change up, and you can walk around and just enjoy each other — it never felt like it was overly packed. What was it — 13,000 people estimated to be down there? And it did not feel like that at all. It was amazing. So, I just wanted to tip my hat to them for that, and I can’t wait to see what they have planned for the rest of downtown events. It was amazing,” said Biesenbach.

City Manager Steve Parker says the Holiday Stroll Parade helped set the tone for a bigger and better overall Christmastime celebration in Seguin. He says the fun just grew from there.

“Just the way our facilities looked and our downtown — it takes a lot to organize these different events, and without the partnerships we have with the Downtown Business Alliance and all our departments pulling together to make these things happen, it really was a great family environment. I couldn’t agree more that shutting down Austin Street was a great idea. And we’re still learning, you know, with some of the water barricades and all that stuff to make sure it flows. But we’ll just get better and better (in the future),” said Parker.

Mayor Donna Dodgen says she agrees that the season was started right this year, and the city and its partners played a huge role in that success. She says downtown looked better than ever and helped bring an even more special feeling to the holiday season.

“Everyone did such an amazing job. Everybody pulled together this holiday season to make that weekend incredible. I know we talked about Austin Street being

closed, but that was a great addition. And I don’t know about any of you, but my mother and dad taught me never to walk in the middle of the street. It was like being decadent to walk in the middle of Austin Street and to stroll down Austin Street. It was a little weird feeling at the beginning, but then I got really used to it. So, I just want to say thank you for that. Thank you for the lights. Thank you for the additions. Thank you for the restrooms. Thank you for the different things that all came to fruition for that. It was just amazing,” said Dodgen.

Dodgen says she expects all of the holiday events to be even better in 2026. She says this year’s parade set a new standard, thanks to the big performance by the city’s Electric Utilities Department under the direction of Utilities Director Tim Howe. She says their float stopped and performed for the crowd, similar to performances seen during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.

“Tim and his group set that bar so high for that Macy’slike performance that I can tell you the school district is already thinking about theirs (for next year), because he told me that night. Then when I was somewhere else, someone else mentioned to me that next year they would also do more. So, I hate to tell you, but our parade is going to be a little bit longer (next year), because I think there’s going to be some more performances,” said Dodgen.

The downtown events included the parade, Sip N’ Stroll, North Pole Stroll, and new this year was the nativitythemed Stroll to the Stable, held inside the old Wells Fargo Building across from Central Park. The city and the Downtown Business Alliance also worked to spruce up the park with a new large Christmas tree and additional lights and decorations throughout the park.

Area basketball teams return to the court to close out the year Chris Austin

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Lady Matadors host Nixon-Smiley this afternoon in non-district action. Tipoff is set for 12:30 at the Seguin High School Student Activity Center.

(Seguin) -- The Lady Matadors return to District 27-5A play on New Year’s Eve, hosting San Antonio Jefferson. Seguin enters the matchup at 3-2 in district. The Lady Mats have won their last two district games. Tipoff between the Lady Matadors and Lady Mustangs is set for Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at the Student Activity Center.

(San Antonio) -- The Seguin Matador boys head to the Alamo City on New Year’s Eve for their

third District 27-5A game. The Mats, currently 1-2 in district play, visit San Antonio Jefferson for an 11:30 a.m. tipoff Wednesday.

(Luling) -- The Navarro Panther boys compete in the Luling Holiday Classic tournament. The Panthers bring a 7-10 record into the event, which runs today through Wednesday.

(Corpus Christi) -- The Navarro Runnin’ Lady Panthers are in Corpus Christi for the Roy Williams Holiday Classic hosted by West Oso High School, running through Tuesday.

James Martin Moeller, age 79 of Seguin, passed away on December 20, 2025. James was born in Seguin, Texas on October 15, 1946, to Lola Alma (Bode) and Martin Alex Moeller. He married Virginia (Kay) Moeller on December 22, 1968.

James was a member of the Seguin High School Class of 1964 and member of the marching band.

James enjoyed many activities throughout his lifetime including, helping with the rodeos at the Bode rodeo arena. He loved his time coaching pony league and little league baseball and playing men’s softball for many years.

James’ work career included Seguin Enterprise where among other things, he captured many photographs of local events, especially sporting events. He then began working for the City of Seguin at the power plant for several years. From there, he worked at United Cotton Goods until their doors closed. That began his final work destination at Seguin Independent School District as warehouse supervisor where he retired after 20 years.

He enjoyed all the good times spent among family and friends. The times

hunting, fishing, shrimp boils and just shooting the “shit”. But, his favorite times were spent supporting his grandchildren in all their activities, whether it be sports related or showing animals or anything else they were involved in.

James is preceded in death by his parents, his mother-in-law and father-inlaw, Marjorie Marie (Neal) and Charles Lynn Carroll, brothers-in-law, Charles Lynn Carroll, Jr. and Robert Andrew Carroll, and sister-in-law, Lynda Sanders and husband Allen.

Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Virginia Kay Carroll Moeller; daughter, Kristine Edwards and husband Luther; son, William Fredrick “Bubba” Moeller and wife Paula; grandchildren, Eli Edwards, Samuel Edwards, Cole Moeller, Alex Horton and husband Ethan, Hunter Gustafson, and Erin Williams and husband Bryce; six great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Michael Neal Carroll; other loving family members and a host of friends.

Visitation will be held on Friday, December 26, 2025, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 27, 2025, at 10 a.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel with the Reverend Rip Collins officiating. A reception will follow at the Silver Center.

matched only by the love he held for his family. As we reflect on Chris’s life, we celebrate not only his adventurous pursuits but also the deep connections he formed with his loved ones.

He is survived by his devoted children, Derick, Kaison, Capri, Marley, and Charlee Herbold, each carrying a piece of his adventurous spirit within them. His mother, Tami Herbold and husband William Newberg, and his father, Alfredo Sanchez and wife Brenda Sanchez, stood proudly in his corner throughout his life. Chris also shared a special bond with his siblings; his sister Kristen Jahns and her husband Clint Jahns, as well as his sister Ciera Sanchez and brother AD Sanchez. He was a cherished uncle to Kendall Hurt and Caiden Jahns, and beloved grandson to Margaret Herbold and her husband Ruben Sanchez along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who created countless memories with him.

Though he is mourned by many, Chris is greeted in the beyond by those who passed before him, including his grandfather Texas John Herbold, stepfather Ricky Risinger, uncle Roger Herbold, aunt Wesley Shehane, cousin John Derick Herbold, and great-grandparents Milton and Catherine Krueger.

His legacy of love, laughter, and an insatiable appetite for life will inspire all who knew him to embrace each day with passion and joy. May he rest in peace, his spirit soaring high like the waves crashing along the shores of Kona, Hawaii.

A celebration of life ceremony will be announced at a later date.

Christopher Brian Herbold, affectionately known to those who loved him as Chris, was born on February 3, 1984, in Seguin, Texas. He left this world on October 9, 2025, in beautiful Kona, Hawaii. Chris’s journey through life can be described as one marked by boundless energy, a thirst for adventure, and a spirit that ignited joy in all who had the privilege of knowing him.

After graduating from Seguin High School, Chris took a courageous step that would shape his future; he moved to Austin, Texas, where he began training to become an MMA fighter. Following this chapter, he spent several fulfilling years in Washington State, where he immersed himself in the great outdoors. Whether he was traversing hiking trails, gliding on a skateboard, conquering snow-covered slopes, cliff diving into refreshing waters, or racing on his BMX bike, his passion for the natural world was evident.

Chris’s zest for life ultimately led him to Kona, Hawaii, where he embraced an adventurous lifestyle surrounded by the beauty of nature and cherished moments spent with family.

Chris’s spirit was infectious, and his smile, contagious. How blessed are we to have someone that makes saying goodbye so hard. His love for adventure was

Roy Lee Caudill, age 81 of McQueeney, passed away on December 25, 2025. Roy was born on January 18, 1944. Roy will be remembered as a former employee of SMI where he worked as an electrician for 36 years.

Roy was adventurous, funny and creative. He loved to travel to new places. With every encounter, one was sure to get a joke and a laugh. He loved his family and friends and always gave of himself to help others when he could. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend.

Farrell “Spitzie” Ullrich, age 91, of Seguin, Texas, passed away on December 26, 2025. Born on October 14, 1934, in San Antonio, Texas, he was the son of Berthold Adolph Otto and Emma Augusta (Schmid) Ullrich Spitzie was a Charter member of Faith Lutheran Church. He was a barber by trade, a profession he practiced with pride and dedication over the years.

He was known for his steady hands, signature flattops, and the care he took with everyone who sat in his barber chair. Outside of work, he had a lifelong enjoyment of race cars, horses, cattle, and farming.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Gary Ullrich and his twin brother, Jarrell “Dickie” Ullrich; his sister, Shirley Ullrich; and his sister-inlaw, Karen Ullrich.

Jane Bierstedt passed away December 15, 2025, at the age of 90 years old.

Jane was born on January 20, 1935, in Farwell, Texas to Hertha Alva Bode McQuatters and Otis Roy McQuatters.

Jane attended Seguin High School and enjoyed a 30 plus year career employed with Southwestern Bell Telephone and AT&T. She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter Sheron Ann Manning and her great grandson Klayton Manning.

She is survived and is lovingly remembered by her husband of 61 years, Alton Bierstedt; son Aaron Bierstedt (Kimberly); grandchildren Brittany Wilkinson

Lung Cancer Warning For Ultra-Processed Foods (Undated) -- There’s a lung cancer warning for ultra-processed foods. Those foods make up about half of the American diet and include ice cream, salted snacks, breakfast cereals, instant noodles, pizza, shop or restaurant-bought soups, sauces, hamburgers and hot dogs, as well as sweetened fruit drinks. The World Cancer Research Fund says UPF’s, as they’re called, has now been linked to lung cancer. It’s previously been linked to heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. A new study, published in the respiratory journal Thorax says there are more than two-million new lung cancer cases worldwide each year and nearly two-million deaths.

Teenagers Who Use Marijuana Engage In Bad Habits (Itasca, IL) -- A new study shows teenagers who use marijuana are more likely to engage in bad behavior and habits. Researchers report in the journal Pediatrics that they talked to more than 160-thousand 8th through 12th graders from 2018 through 2022. They found that those who said they used weed monthly were more than twice as likely to skip classes and have bad grades compared to those who don’t use it at all.

They are also twice as likely to get into fights. About 20 percent of those surveyed say they use marijuana and about six percent of high school seniors say they use it daily.

New Study Demonstrates Risks Of Giving Cellphones To Age 12 Children (Philadelphia, PA) -- A new study out of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia is demonstrating the risks of giving cellphones to children at age 12.

It shows a higher percentage of depression, obesity and lack of sleep among those who had mobile devices as preteens compared to those who did not. Dr. Ron Barzilay, the lead researcher, says the study consisted of data from more than ten-thousand young people as a part of an ongoing study on adolescent brain development. The findings are published in the medical journal Pediatrics.

NY Requires Social Media To Come With Warning Labels (Albany, NY) -- New York State wants social media platforms to come with warning labels. Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation that will require social media platforms to display labels warning of the dangerous impact certain features could have on the mental health of young users.

Those features would include platforms with addictive feeds, auto play or infinite scroll. Governor Hochul says it is essential to prioritize mental health and ensure people are aware of the risks since so much information can be shared online. Recent studies show adolescents who spent three hours or more online each day face double the risk of anxiety and depression.

The tournament is unrated and beginner-friendly, but participants should be familiar with the basic rules and moves of chess.

The library will provide chess boards and clocks, though participants are welcome to bring their own.

There will be five-minute breaks between rounds, with snacks provided. Efforts will be made to match players by age group, but some mixing may occur in later rounds depending on attendance. Special prizes will be awarded, including 3-D printed trophies for first and second place in each age group: Kids (6–11), Teens (12–17), and Adults (18 and up).
