I-10 shut down again after 18-wheeler crash

A donation to remember

The Guadalupe County Road & Bridge Department brought in a donation to remember to the Christian Cupboard this week helping to feed local families. See the story on page 2.

(Seguin) — Major accidents involving 18-wheelers are becoming a common occurrence along Interstate 10 in Seguin. The heavily traveled highway is currently under construction in the area.

On Saturday, yet another accident occurred, leading to the highway being closed for several hours.

According to the Seguin Police Department, the accident occurred early Saturday morning on I-10 west near North Austin Street. As a result, both the westbound and eastbound lanes were closed while

crews worked to clear the scene. Drivers were urged to use caution in the area, and traffic came to a standstill on the highway.

Police say no injuries were reported, but some of that traffic did spill into town as drivers looked to avoid the highway closure.

In recent months, there have been several serious crashes in that area. The high rate of speed, combined with ongoing construction work, makes it especially important for drivers to exercise patience and use caution while traveling along the interstate.

County department helps feed local families with large donation to Christian Cupboard

(Seguin) — The Guadalupe County Road & Bridge Department has done its part to help ensure local residents are well fed. The department continued its annual food drive tradition by collecting more than a ton of food.

Department workers recently collected and delivered 2,162 pounds of food to the Christian Cupboard, which helps feed families in Seguin and throughout Guadalupe County.

Organizers say the annual food donation drive is a long-standing tradition among participating departments and brings employees together each year with a shared goal of giving back to the community.

“This annual effort reflects the generosity and teamwork of our employees,” said Doug Burnside, Road & Bridge Administrator. “The food collected will help area families during the holidays, especially when kids are home. We often hear about the need for donations to the Christian Cupboard, and we wanted to help in any way possible during this giving season.”

The Road & Bridge Department maintains 720 miles of county roads. Its daily work includes constructing

new roads, repairing and maintaining existing roads and bridges, mowing and cutting brush, inspecting new subdivisions, and handling a wide range of other responsibilities to help ensure safe transportation and compliance.

State officials warn of gift card scam (Austin) — Texas officials are warning the public about a massive fraud scheme that could impact gift cards sold statewide.

The Texas Financial Crimes Intelligence Center (FCIC) recently arrested three men accused of stealing approximately $14 million from gift cards at stores ranging from Dallas-Fort Worth to Central Texas and across the Gulf Coast.

FCIC officials say the scam involves a process known as gift card cloning. The agency is urging consumers to closely examine gift card packaging before purchasing and to look for any excess glue or damage.

Texas Penal Code 32.56 went into effect this September and targets those who fraudulently use, possess, or tamper with gift cards.

The Texas Financial Crimes Intelligence Center is the state’s fusion center that coordinates law enforcement investigations related to organized financial crimes.

The FCIC is staffed by law enforcement officers and analysts with extensive experience in financial and

organized crime investigations.

These crimes include gas pump skimming, ATM skimming, point-of-sale skimming, check forgery, fuel theft, and numerous other forms of organized financial crime. The FCIC works with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, as well as financial, fuel, and retail industries, to protect consumers and the Texas economy.

TLU Polar Plunge tradition continues

Prior to the arrival of unseasonably warm temperatures last week, students at Texas Lutheran University once again took one final dip in the Mabee Pool. The tradition, known as the Polar Plunge, was held a couple of weeks ago when temperatures were still cool. The event lasts about 45 minutes, and each participating student who successfully swims a lap across the pool receives a free T-shirt.

James Martin Moeller, age 79 of Seguin, passed away on December 20, 2025. James was born in Seguin, Texas on October 15, 1946, to Lola Alma (Bode) and Martin Alex Moeller. He married Virginia (Kay) Moeller on December 22, 1968.

James was a member of the Seguin High School Class of 1964 and member of the marching band.

James enjoyed many activities throughout his lifetime including, helping with the rodeos at the Bode rodeo arena. He loved his time coaching pony league and little league baseball and playing men’s softball for many years.

James’ work career included Seguin Enterprise where among other things, he captured many photographs of local events, especially sporting events. He then began working for the City of Seguin at the power plant for several years. From there, he worked at United Cotton Goods until their doors closed. That began his final work destination at Seguin Independent School District as warehouse supervisor where he retired after 20 years.

He enjoyed all the good times spent among family and friends. The times

Ruby Nell Bierstedt peacefully passed away on Monday, December 22, 2025, at the age of 91. She was born to Alvin and Francis (McDougall) Stahl on December 18, 1934, in Marion, Texas.

Ruby will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. She enjoyed going dancing with Herbert throughout their 50+ year marriage. Her true passion was raising her 3 children and all those precious grandchildren and great grandchildren. Each one has their own memories of Grandma! Ruby will be forever missed and never forgotten.

matched only by the love he held for his family. As we reflect on Chris’s life, we celebrate not only his adventurous pursuits but also the deep connections he formed with his loved ones.

He is survived by his devoted children, Derick, Kaison, Capri, Marley, and Charlee Herbold, each carrying a piece of his adventurous spirit within them. His mother, Tami Herbold and husband William Newberg, and his father, Alfredo Sanchez and wife Brenda Sanchez, stood proudly in his corner throughout his life. Chris also shared a special bond with his siblings; his sister Kristen Jahns and her husband Clint Jahns, as well as his sister Ciera Sanchez and brother AD Sanchez. He was a cherished uncle to Kendall Hurt and Caiden Jahns, and beloved grandson to Margaret Herbold and her husband Ruben Sanchez along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who created countless memories with him.

Though he is mourned by many, Chris is greeted in the beyond by those who passed before him, including his grandfather Texas John Herbold, stepfather Ricky Risinger, uncle Roger Herbold, aunt Wesley Shehane, cousin John Derick Herbold, and great-grandparents Milton and Catherine Krueger.

His legacy of love, laughter, and an insatiable appetite for life will inspire all who knew him to embrace each day with passion and joy. May he rest in peace, his spirit soaring high like the waves crashing along the shores of Kona, Hawaii.

Christopher Brian Herbold, affectionately known to those who loved him as Chris, was born on February 3, 1984, in Seguin, Texas. He left this world on October 9, 2025, in beautiful Kona, Hawaii. Chris’s journey through life can be described as one marked by boundless energy, a thirst for adventure, and a spirit that ignited joy in all who had the privilege of knowing him.

After graduating from Seguin High School, Chris took a courageous step that would shape his future; he moved to Austin, Texas, where he began training to become an MMA fighter. Following this chapter, he spent several fulfilling years in Washington State, where he immersed himself in the great outdoors. Whether he was traversing hiking trails, gliding on a skateboard, conquering snow-covered slopes, cliff diving into refreshing waters, or racing on his BMX bike, his passion for the natural world was evident.

Chris’s zest for life ultimately led him to Kona, Hawaii, where he embraced an adventurous lifestyle surrounded by the beauty of nature and cherished moments spent with family.

Chris’s spirit was infectious, and his smile, contagious. How blessed are we to have someone that makes saying goodbye so hard. His love for adventure was

Roy Lee Caudill, age 81 of McQueeney, passed away on December 25, 2025. Roy was born on January 18, 1944. Roy will be remembered as a former employee of SMI where he worked as an electrician for 36 years.

Roy was adventurous, funny and creative. He loved to travel to new places. With every encounter, one was sure to get a joke and a laugh. He loved his family and friends and always gave of himself to help others when he could. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend.

Farrell “Spitzie” Ullrich, age 91, of Seguin, Texas, passed away on December 26, 2025. Born on October 14, 1934, in San Antonio, Texas, he was the son of Berthold Adolph Otto and Emma Augusta (Schmid) Ullrich Spitzie was a Charter member of Faith Lutheran Church. He was a barber by trade, a profession he practiced with pride and dedication over the years.

He was known for his steady hands, signature flattops, and the care he took with everyone who sat in his barber chair. Outside of work, he had a lifelong enjoyment of race cars, horses, cattle, and farming.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Gary Ullrich and his twin brother, Jarrell “Dickie” Ullrich; his sister, Shirley Ullrich; and his sister-inlaw, Karen Ullrich.

Jane Bierstedt passed away December 15, 2025, at the age of 90 years old.

Jane was born on January 20, 1935, in Farwell, Texas to Hertha Alva Bode McQuatters and Otis Roy McQuatters.

Jane attended Seguin High School and enjoyed a 30 plus year career employed with Southwestern Bell Telephone and AT&T. She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter Sheron Ann Manning and her great grandson Klayton Manning.

Dozens Sick With Salmonella Poisoning Across U.S. (Atlanta. GA) -- The CDC says 64 people across 22 states are sick with the same strain of salmonella linked to eating raw oysters. Twenty are in the hospital, and no deaths have been reported. Health officials say people with salmonella poisoning begin to experience a fever, stomach cramps, and diarrhea within six hours to six days after exposure. The CDC and the FDA are still investigating if the tainted oysters come from the same source. They have not issued a recall at this time.

U.S. Christmas Dinner Averages 3,600 Calories (Undated) -- The average Christmas dinner meal in the U.S. comes in at 36-hundred calories, higher than every other Western nation except the U.K. That’s according to healthy eating platform Lifesum, which looked at meals across the Americas and Europe. Both the U.S. and U.K. tend to have meals high in sugar and fat. The company recommends focusing on protein and fiber to avoid blood sugar spikes and fatigue. The Czech Republic was found to have the healthiest Christmas meal, with lots of fish and vegetables.

Gut Bacteria May Be Factor In Bipolar Disorder (Undated) -- A new study has found that gut bacteria may be a factor in Bipolar disorder. It’s a condition in which patients typically alternate between periods of high energy and euphoria and low energy, hopelessness and depression. Researchers in China say they’ve discovered that microbes living in the digestive system may contribute to BD by directly influencing brain connectivity. Their study, published in Molecular Psychiatry, was conducted on mice and needs to be replicated in human patients before scientists can explore promising new pathways to treat Bipolar disorder and develop new medications.

Greenery Needed For Effective Toxin Filtration (Washington, DC) -- NASA says its Clean Air Study provides guidelines on how much greenery is needed to effectively filter toxins from the air in your home. While the study did not specify plant counts for homes, it demonstrated that plants can remove toxins in sealed environments.

But wellness experts suggest one plant per 100 square feet which is equivalent to two to five plants for smaller spaces, six to ten for medium spaces, and 16 to 32 for larger spaces. Although the exact amount of greenery needed varies, they say following these recommendations can create a healthier home environment.
