Seguin ISD’s Back-to-School Bash set for Friday at SHS Darren Dunn
(Seguin) -- The first day of school is still more than a week away, but the Seguin ISD hopes to see all of its students and families Friday night at this year’s Backto-School Bash at Seguin High School. The event is a collaboration between the district and a number of individuals, organizations and businesses. Allison Seidenberger, the district’s ACE Afterschool Project Director, says they expect a big turnout for this year’s bash. “This is our fifth annual Back-to-School Bash. It’s grown every single year and it’s for all Seguin ISD students from pre-K all the way through their senior year,” said Seidenberger. Seidenberger says there will be free food and plenty of other activities and opportunities available for those who attend. “We have a variety of resources available. Representatives from
our campuses, district office departments such as Student Services, Child Nutrition, our Transportation Department, and our Board of Trustees will also be there. And then additionally, we’re able to bring in the support of our amazing Seguin community, with different businesses and resources for our families,” said Seidenberger. Seidenberger says several groups have worked behind the scenes to pull this all together. She says in addition to school resources, several community groups have worked together to offer something special for the kids and families who attend. The Seguin Police and Fire departments, along with other groups, have been collecting school supplies, and many of those will be handed out during Friday night’s bash. Bash, pg. 3

Church hosts Back-toSchool Carnival Saturday in downtown Seguin Darren Dunn
(Seguin) -- A local church is hosting a big back-toschool event of its own this weekend. Greater Second Baptist Church is inviting the public to its Community Outreach and Back-to-School Carnival. Pastor James Matthews and his wife, Devon Matthews, are encouraging everyone to take advantage of this free event. “This will be our second community outreach, but our first Back-to-School Carnival all together here in the city of Seguin. It will be Saturday, August 8, and it is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.,” said Sis. Devon Matthews. Sis. Matthews says the church was looking for a meaningful way to give back to the community, and they decided that the Back-to-School Carnival was a great way to do that. “The goal was to try to just give back to the youth in the community of Seguin by making sure the children were prepared and have some supplies, basic supplies and necessities to start the year off right. We all know that everyone doesn’t have the same financial situation. And ever since my husband became pastor here a few months ago, we have just fallen in love with the city of Seguin and we want to do whatever we can to help,” said Matthews. Matthews says families just need to stop by on Saturday. She says they will have free school supplies and other items available for those who attend. “It’ll be first come, first served. Children must be present, no exceptions. The children must be present. If you have to work or you’re out of town, you can send your kids with a trusted family member or neighbor or something like that. We do need to account for each child. And this is for documentation purposes, so we know what we’re looking at for next year,” said Matthews. The church will be handing the school supplies out at the top of each hour during the event. Matthews says this will allow them to make sure that the supplies are given out over the course of the event. “We’re going to give out the school supplies in batches. We’re gonna give them out at the top of 10 a.m., the top of 11 a.m., and 12 noon to ensure everyone has a fair chance to get supplies. In the meantime, we will have games, we’ll have prizes, we’ll have snacks, carnival foods, hot dogs, popcorn, you name it. All of that is available for the community to just come out, get to know us there at the Greater Second Baptist Church. Just know this is just the start and the beginning of many things we’d like to do for the Seguin community,” said Matthews.
The church is located in downtown Seguin. Matthews says they are easy to find, and they pray for a big turnout on Saturday. “We are notably across from the famous Haunted Magnolia Hotel. We are directly across from there. We will be having the street barricaded off, right there between Donegan and Nolte streets. Again, that’s 208 South Crockett Street. It’s first come, first served, children must be present, and we will be giving out the supplies in batches at the top of every hour,” said Matthews. Matthews says she and her husband have done similar events in San Antonio. She says none of this could have been possible without the generosity of so many people and businesses in the community. She says a special thank you goes out especially to Texas Heritage Wealth Management, which made a huge donation of backpacks this week. “We are a very small church, but we have a big, big heart. So we were only expecting to give out initially less than 100 sets of school supplies, but that has since doubled. And we would like to also thank one of our donors who donated 72 backpacks,” said Matthews. Because of those generous backpack donations, Matthews says they need more donations of school supplies to help fill each of the backpacks. City Seeking Vision for Downtown Mural

(Seguin) -- The clock is ticking for local artists who would like to submit their vision for a new mural in downtown Seguin. Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen says the city’s Visitor Center in downtown Seguin wants to add a mural, and ideas for that public artwork must be submitted no later than Friday.
“Destination Seguin is accepting proposals for a new mural at the Seguin Visitor Center. They’re looking for a creative design that will welcome visitors and celebrate Seguin. Artists are invited to review the project details and submit a proposal and design concept, which is due Friday, August 7, by 5 p.m. You’re welcome to call the Main Street
Bash, continued. “There’s all kinds of community partners that are able to come in and share information regarding how they can support families in various areas, as well as some for-profit vendors who will be there selling locally made items. Our community and business partners can help you start to get your Matador spirit gear. We’ll have several groups and booster clubs, and they will be providing that opportunity. The majority of the events as part of our Back-to-School Bash are free; however, there are some for-profit items that you could bring money for if you’re interested in purchasing,” said Seidenberger. Families are once again being encouraged to come hungry. Seidenberger says a free meal is also being offered as part of the bash. “Thanks to generous donations, we have a hot dog supper meal that will be served free while supplies last. And then we also have quite a few generous donations

So we’re kind of taking over that whole little downstairs centralized area of the high school, so that we can offer all of the various activities, events, and individuals that families can connect with,” said Seidenberger. NORMAN, Okla. — The 2025-26 PLATFORM Golf Team Academic Award recipients were announced by the GCAA on Wednesday. A GCAArecord 331 schools across six divisions earned a PLATFORM Golf Team Academic Award. 155 schools received Presidents Special Recognition for having an average team GPA of 3.5 or above in 2025-26.
Texas Lutheran earned President’s Special Recognition honors with a 3.58 GPA as a team over the course of the 2026 spring season. Robert Lee Achterberg, age 68 of New Braunfels, formerly of Seguin, passed away on July 27, 2026. Robert was born on July 8, 1958, in Seguin, Texas to Joyce Barbara (Koenig) and Herbert Gus Achterberg. Robert was a 1976 graduate of Seguin High School. He was employed by CMC for many years where he worked as a machinist. He also owned and operated a motorcycle repair shop in Seguin. Helping anyone repairing items was a favorite job and pastime as he had many different tools to work with. He enjoyed gun hobbies and freshwater fishing. Robert is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Allen Arthur Achterberg, and his cousin, Shirley Hacker. Survivors include his children, Elaine Rose Achterberg-Rios and husband Randy, Barbara Lynn Achterberg and partner Carl Verow, and Robert Lee “Robbie” Achterberg, Jr.; grandchildren, Christian Jude Santos, Lesley Verow,

Wayne T. Brantley, age 70 of Seguin, passed away on July 6, 2026. Wayne was born in San Antonio, Texas on March 23, 1956, to Ann (Tice) and William Elzy Brantley. From the age of six, Wayne grew up as a selfproclaimed river rat along Lake McQueeney. He attended Navarro Schools and was a 1975 graduate of Navarro High School. When he wasn’t fishing, one could find him boating, skiing, or swimming. Other times Wayne was with his buddies’ trapping raccoons and selling the hides. He also liked hunting, however one of his favorite pastimes was spent enjoying NASCAR racing. As a mason, Wayne was a member of Guadalupe Masonic Lodge 109 AF & AM. Wayne is preceded in death by his parents, his grandson, Ethan William Brantley, his brother, Bobby Ray Brantley, his mother-in-law and father-in-law,

He never met a stranger, and humor was one of his favorite ways to show affection. Ronnie always made a lasting impression wherever he went and never missed an opportunity to make someone smile with a joke, funny story, or a little good-natured teasing. Ronnie is preceded in death by his parents, older brother Kenneth Mudd, and sister-in-law Vicki Lyle Mudd. Ronald Lee “Ronnie” Mudd, age 83 of Seguin, passed away on July 29, 2026. Ronnie was born on March 13, 1943, in Victoria, Texas to Agatha Evelyn (Hoffer) and Leber Alphonse Mudd. Ronnie grew up in Edna, Texas, and graduated from Edna High School. He attended Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos on a football scholarship and excelled at the linebacker and deep snapper position. As a member of the Alpha Psi fraternity, he was voted “college favorite” by his classmates in recognition of his strong character and personality. After college, Ronnie was a well-liked and respected high school biology teacher, coach, and driver’s ed instructor in Rockdale, TX. In 1970, Ronnie married the love of his life, Kathryn “Kit” (Lyle). After adventures living in Singapore, they ultimately settled in Portland, Texas, where they raised their two children, Miki and Michael. Ronnie started his career in Workplace Safety in 1971, inspecting commercial and industrial facilities throughout Texas. Even when work required him to travel, he remained present for his family, either in the bleachers or on the sidelines proudly watching his kids play sports, usually with video camera in hand. Ronnie and Kit moved to Seguin in 2002, where he worked for Commercial Metals Corporation before retiring in 2009. He was an adored “PawPaw” to his four amazing granddaughters and continued his tradition of showing up for the people he loved. He proudly attended dance performances, volleyball matches, barrel races, basketball and soccer games, and countless other activities. A devoted Catholic, Ronnie was actively involved in the church parishes
Warren H. Soefje, age 83 of Seguin, passed away on August 2, 2026. Warren was born on September 12, 1942, in Seguin, Texas, to Grace Lucille (Behrendt) and Cleburne Soefje. He proudly served his country in the Texas National Guard part of the United States Army. He retired from the Texas Department of Transportation after 27 years of faithful service. The Best of Times were spent fishing and hunting, but the most precious were the times spent with his grandchildren. Warren never met a stranger and was happy to just sit and visit with anyone. Warren is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Bobby Soefje and wife Sally, sister, Karen Olson, and sister-in-law, Cindy Elley. Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Helen B. More States Report Cyclospora (Undated) -- A nationwide outbreak of cyclospora is growing with more than ten-thousand confirmed cases reported across 47 states. The CDC says thousands of additional probable cases could push the total number of infections above 22-thousand with the outbreak linked to recalled iceberg lettuce. Michigan has been the hardest-hit state, reporting more than 12-thousand cases, and officials say two deaths have been reported among patients who had underlying health conditions. Several other states may soon be added to the federal investigation as health officials continue tracking the source and impact of the outbreak. Chipotle Pulls Jalapenos Due To Salmonella Outbreak (Newport Beach, CA) -- Chipotle Mexican Grill is voluntarily removing jalapenos from its restaurants nationwide. This comes after a Minnesota salmonella outbreak linked to the peppers sickened over 100 people. In a statement released Tuesday, the fast food chain confirmed it was cooperating with the public health investigation and had identified jalapenos from one common lot as a potential source of contamination. Investigators believe the spread of the foodborne illness has impacted other Mexican-style quick-service restaurants and possibly other states as well. Though Chipotle had a specific lot number identified, the FDA has yet to release a recall concerning the outbreak. Aid In Dying Act In Effect In NY (Albany, NY) -- The controversial Medical Aid In Dying Act is now in effect in New York State. The new law allows New Yorkers with terminal illnesses with under six months to live to request medication to end their lives. A team of doctors must sign off on a recorded oral request by the patient who also must undergo a mental health evaluation. Advocates say the move is about compassion and ending suffering while opponents say it’s immoral. Pediatrician Gives Back To School Health Tips (Cleveland, OH) -- A pediatric nurse is giving some health tips for students heading back to school soon. Kristina Banks at Case Western University suggests focusing on eating healthy school lunches and snacks that include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins because many children have an open kitchen during the summer and are not eating scheduled meals now. She also recommends gradually having children move out of the summer bedtime routine and into school year routine so it’s not a big shock to the body switching right before school starts. She recommends children get up to date with their vaccines before heading back to the classroom.
