A cool place for everybody

Red Beard’s Landing inviting folks over to Lake Placid

(Seguin) -- As Lake Placid makes its long-awaited comeback, one local business owner is making sure everyone -- not just those who live on the waterfront -- has a chance to enjoy it.

Chris Nelligan-Davis has transformed part of his lakeside property -- his backyard to be exact -- into Red Beard’s Landing Seguin, where visitors can swim, rent kayaks and paddleboards, relax along the shoreline, or book a boat ride.

Downtown Seguin building momentum with new businesses, visitors

(Seguin) -- While much of the attention in Seguin has focused on future retail growth along Interstate 10 and State Highway 46, city officials say downtown Seguin continues to experience its own wave of excitement.

That’s according to Blaire Friar, director of Destination Seguin. Friar says interest in Main Street and the historic downtown district remains strong as new businesses continue to look at opening their doors in the heart of the city.

Teen killed in car crash in La Vernia

(La Vernia) -- A 16-year-old from a nearby high school was killed in a single-vehicle crash early Sunday morning.

According to the La Vernia Police Department, the crash occurred just before 4 a.m. Sunday in the 12,000 block of U.S. Highway 87 near East Chihuahua Street.

First responders arrived to find a 2015 Lexus RX350 rolled onto its side and engulfed in flames.

Police say the teenager, who was the vehicle’s only occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say the girl was traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 87 when, for reasons that remain under investigation, she left the roadway, entered a grassy area and struck the brick “City of La Vernia” welcome sign before the SUV rolled over and caught fire.

Downtown, continued.

Friar says all of this momentum has been encouraging as entrepreneurs recognize the value of locating in downtown Seguin.

“We have seen an exciting flurry of new businesses and new interest coming downtown, and we’re so excited,” said Friar.

Friar says city leaders want to maintain downtown as the heart of Seguin by protecting its historic character, supporting locally owned businesses and preserving the smalltown atmosphere that residents and visitors have come to appreciate.

She says one of the most rewarding developments has been the continued disappearance of vacant storefronts.

“We’re really excited to see all the interest and see some of these vacant buildings fill up again and bring some new life downtown,” said Friar. “We have our favorites that have been here for years, but we’re really excited to welcome some new businesses to the mix as well.”

Among the latest business creating a buzz of excitement is the new Blackdoor Steakhouse at 104 S. Austin St.

She says the steakhouse is all part of this renewed energy that

The victim’s identity has not been released.

La Vernia ISD officials confirmed the teen was a student at La Vernia High School.

As classes began on Monday -- the district offered its counseling services for students and staff.

In a statement, the district said its thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy and that campus teams are prepared to provide counseling resources, with additional support available through neighboring school districts if needed.

La Vernia ISD officials say their focus is on supporting students, staff and families while providing a safe and welcoming environment as the school year begins.

The accident remains under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

is also being fueled by increased tourism.

In fact, some of that increase is thanks to Chef Ernest Servantes of Seguin’s Burnt Bean. She says Servantes is no doubt bringing even more national attention to Seguin by serving as one of the prestigious judges on the Food Network’s newly released TV shows Pitmasters.

“When I watched that first episode and I heard them talking about Seguin, Texas, it just made me so happy because it is so cool to hear and have that presence on such a large stage,” said Friar.

She says while many visitors initially come to Seguin for Burnt Bean Co., downtown businesses are also benefiting as people take time to shop, dine and “experience the district.”

“We all know visitors are coming to Seguin. A lot of them are coming for Burnt Bean, and we’re excited to be able to encourage them to continue to shop and continue their experience throughout downtown because that’s really what we’re trying to build — that unique, authentic downtown experience with those beautiful local businesses and friendly faces that everyone loves to see,” said Friar.

Meanwhile, city officials says they continue preparing for what they know will be another busy and successful fall season. They say some of those events include the Seguin Fall Festival, Guadalupe County Fair and PRCA Rodeo, Holiday Stroll, and Sip N’ Stroll.

Landing, continued.

Nelligan-Davis says the idea is about more than recreation.

“It was kind of just going to be water access only if you come from the water. And then all our friends and other patrons were just walking through our backyard anyway. In my opinion, it’s kind of what life is about -- it’s just, sharing and getting along with each other. It just wouldn’t seem right if I just, kept it all to myself,” said Nelligan-Davis.

The Landing first opened after Lake Placid was drained in 2021. That’s when Nelligan-Davis and his wife decided to make the best of a difficult situation by creating a welcoming place for the community.

“Everybody that’s come down has been really cool. And the last few days, I’ve heard it as like a Cheers in the water. Just everybody kind of shakes hands and says hello when you first come down. It’s not like a stranger kind of

place. It’s just like, hey, what’s up? What’s your name?” said Nelligan-Davis.

Nelligan-Davis says his goal is for guests to feel like they’re spending the day at a friend’s lake house, adding that sharing the lake with others is what brings him the greatest joy.

He says cost is $10 a person or free for those looking to stop by and enjoy a cold one at the bar overlooking the water. The small business is located at 933 Reiley Rd.

To learn more about the story behind Red Beard’s Landing, be sure to pick up one of the limited July issues of Seguin Today Magazine, now available throughout the community.

The feature also includes information on his boat charter company Red Beard Boats and water rentals on Lake Placid.

Research Suggests Giving Young Children Less Sugar Helps Brain Health

(Hong Kong) -- New research suggests limiting sugar for children under the age of two may be good for brain health later in life. Researchers at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology looked at 65-thousand older people who were real young during the UK government program that limited sugar during World War Two. The study found sugar rationing up to the age of two was linked to a 23 percent lower level of dementia. However, researchers note it is impossible to tell just how much sugar the people in the study consumed during that time.
