Threats force afterschool evacuation at SHS

WEEKEND EDITION

TODAY

Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) – Dismissal turned a bit frightful for some students and staff over at Seguin High School Thursday afternoon. Reported threats immediately prompted a significant law enforcement response and the evacuation of the campus. The situation unfolded near the end of the school day and

significantly disrupted dismissal. At approximately 4:17 p.m., the Seguin Police Department received a call from a male individual claiming to have both a firearm and a bomb at Seguin High School. The call came two minutes after the campus had been released for the day. SHS, pg. 4

(Seguin) -- Faith Lutheran Church is inviting the entire Seguin community over this Sunday. The congregation will be celebrating a 60 year milestone -- a milestone marking six decades of faith, fellowship and service. Senior Pastor Jeremy Pedersen says the 60th anniversary is more than a celebration of the church’s history. “It’s a milestone because it’s 60 years of God’s faithfulness. This church started as a vision to reach families here in Seguin, and that’s why they planted the

church right across from the high school. Sixty years later, we’re continuing that vision to share the good news, to share God’s love to all the families and to people here in this community,” said Pedersen. The day begins with a special worship service at 9 a.m., followed by a special anniversary program. Pedersen says the congregation hopes Sunday’s celebration will bring together current members, former members, friends and anyone in the community who wants to be part of the occasion. Seguin Sunrise Lions hosting another SINGO fundraiser this Saturday Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- Get ready to sing along -- the Seguin Sunrise Lions Club is turning up the music Saturday for its fourth SINGO fundraiser. The Seguin Sunrise Lions Club says SINGO is one of it most popular fundraisers and is inviting the community to sing, dance and compete for prizes. SINGO will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Silver Center. Omar Maldonado, president of the Seguin Sunrise Lions Club, says the event was created as a new way for the club to raise money while giving people an opportunity to have fun together. “I had the idea of coming up with a new fundraiser for the Seguin Sunrise Lions Club, and my first thought was SINGO,” said Maldonado. “SINGO is not a unique idea. It’s a bar game that’s played around locally. It’s basically bingo, but using songs. You play it like bingo --you get five diagonal, horizontal or vertical, you win. You’ll just hear snippets of songs. I figured, why not apply that as a fundraiser? We tried it out in August of 2025, and it ended up being quite successful. Then every single time we’ve done it, it’s just gotten bigger and bigger and bigger. Now, the word of mouth has been incredible.” Unlike traditional bingo, Maldonado says participants do not need to know the names of songs, artists or when the music was released to take part. “Apprehension usually comes down to, ‘Oh, do I need to know the song or the artist or the year it came out

or something like that?’ No, no, no,” said Maldonado. “All I’m doing is playing music, and I will let you know what the song title is, and you all have to just mark it down on your board. There’s no musical knowledge required. You go in there, and we encourage people to sing and dance because it is a lively community event.” Maldonado will once again serve as the host, something he says adds to the overall fun. “I do love doing this, so I encourage the more interaction, the better for me,” said Maldonado. “I say no apprehension. Just come in there with a good singing voice or a bad singing voice — I don’t judge. You get your chance to win some great prizes, and there’s also some trivia in between, so you might get a little door prize, too, in between. If you do have some knowledge, I will play around with that.” Tickets are $20 and include five rounds of songs and prizes. Tickets will be sold at the door beginning at 3:30 p.m., although cards are limited. Proceeds from Saturday’s SINGO benefit local charities and service projects supported by the Seguin Sunrise Lions Club. The Silver Center is located at 510 E. Court St. The event runs from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Silver Center. Doors and ticket sales begin at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 for five rounds, with cards available while supplies last.

SHS, continued. The school resource officer was notified, and the SRO and campus security quickly began evacuating the remaining students and staff from the building. Officials say additional officers responded to the campus. They say officers completed multiple thorough sweeps of the campus, no weapons, explosive devices, or other threats were located. Police determined there was no active threat to the campus. The incident was determined to be a swatting call — a false report of a serious threat intended to generate a large-scale emergency response. Seguin High School students awaiting pickup or who were already on the bus were transported to the Seguin Coliseum’s Midway Hall parking lot for reunification with their families. The situation also impacted Thursday night’s athletic schedule. The freshman football games at Matador Stadium were canceled. Seguin ISD Superintendent Dr. Jack Lee released a letter to parents and families following the evacuation, thanking school personnel and first responders for their response. “Our high school staff did exactly what they were supposed to do and evacuated the building quickly, safely, and as efficiently as possible,” said Lee. “District staff immediately implemented our emergency protocols, including the reunification of students with their families at the Seguin Coliseum. I want to thank our staff for their work and, most importantly, for keeping the safety of our students at the center of every decision.” Lee said the district’s first priority during an emergency is protecting students and staff, even when that means information to parents may be limited while the situation is unfolding. “The safety and well-being of our students and staff will always be our

Church, continued. “Certainly, we want to invite everyone. We’re going to have a special worship service at 9 a.m., and right after that we’ll have a group photo of our entire congregation. More importantly, after that we’re going to go to our gym and have some fellowship time, see some photos and, best of all, some of the men of our church are going to use our old barbecue pit. We’re actually going to have brisket and sausage and serve a meal with others,” said Pedersen. Pedersen says Faith Lutheran’s connection to the Seguin “community remains at the heart of its mission,” just as it was when the church was founded in 1966. “Back in 1966, they wanted to reach the young families, the families here in Seguin, to share the good news of the love of Jesus Christ. That continues to be our mission, especially with our students and the next generation -- to share that God

highest priority,” said Lee. “In an emergency, our first responsibility is to respond, ensure the safety of our students and staff, and work closely with law enforcement and emergency personnel.” Lee says the district understands that parents and community members may have questions when an incident such as Thursday’s occurs. “We will always work to communicate with families as quickly as we can, but there may be times when our initial focus must remain on managing the situation and ensuring everyone is safe,” said Lee. “We will provide information as quickly as we can once details are confirmed and appropriate to share.” Lee also addressed speculation and rumors circulating about the incident. “We ask our families and community to rely on official communications from Seguin ISD and our law enforcement partners for accurate information.” The Seguin Police Department says swatting calls create fear and significant disruption for students and staff while also diverting law enforcement and emergency resources from legitimate emergencies. Police and Seguin ISD officials thanked the Texas Department of Public Safety, Guadalupe County Sheriff ’s Office, Seguin Fire Department, Guadalupe County Fire Rescue, Guadalupe County Constable’s Office Precinct 2, and all other personnel who assisted during the incident. Lee says he was grateful for the response from everyone involved. “I am grateful for the calm and professional response of our staff, the cooperation of our students and families, and the immediate assistance of our law enforcement partners,” said Lee. The Seguin Police Department says the incident remains under investigation.

loves them, God cares for them and the promise that we have by our good Lord,” said Pedersen. Pedersen says while the church and community around it have changed over the past six decades, its central mission has remained the same. “Things change, but our good Lord does not change, and our Lord wants to reach and share His amazing love right here in Seguin. That’s where we feel our mission is — to continue to share the good news of Jesus Christ around Seguin, as it has for the past 60 years and for many years to come,” said Pedersen. Church organizers encourage former members and anyone with memories or connections to Faith Lutheran to come reconnect, share stories and help celebrate the church’s six decades in Seguin. Historical photos and additional anniversary information are also being shared through Faith Lutheran’s website and Facebook page. Faith Lutheran Church is located at 1326 E. Cedar St.

Judy Frels Semmler, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and nurse, passed away peacefully on August 8th at the age of seventy-five. She was born in Seguin, Texas on March 27, 1951 to Leo Frels and Estelle Frels Hill. Judy was the oldest daughter but third born of eight children in the Frels family. She was incredibly close to her siblings, perhaps due to the close quarters on Ireland Street, but it didn’t end there. Throughout her life, her brothers and sisters, along with her siblings-in-law, remained among her closest friends. She attended St. James Catholic Church then Seguin High School where she met and eventually married her high school sweetheart and true love John Semmler. Married for more than fifty-five years, they grew closer together, not apart. From the early years as a bowling duo to playing co-ed softball with Judy as the star pitcher, their lives were interwoven from the start. They camped together (seemingly never checking the weather before),they attended concerts together (a table at the Mucky Duck was a regular date spot), they even knew how to be still together — most often on a patio letting an afternoon drift by. Everywhere they went, they built family out of friends, and they spent their retirement in what they lovingly dubbed “Kingsbury East.” They modeled what a committed marriage looks like. Judy and John had four children. Judy poured her life into her daughters. She was there for all of it: soccer, swimming, cheer, dance, cross country, gymnastics. And later, for the things that came after: careers, husbands, children, pets. She was patient. She listened. She wanted a deep and meaningful relationship with each of her girls, and was successful in doing so. As a natural caregiver, she made her career as a labor and delivery nurse at The Woman’s Hospital of Texas. She practiced with compassion and selflessness—from handmaking bereavement boxes for families who lost children during childbirth so no parent would leave the hospital emptyhanded to covering shifts during natural disasters and working nearly every Christmas Day so her colleagues with young families could be home with their children. There was no other person like Judy. Judy had a passion for travel that always brought a spark of joy to her life. Whether it was visiting her favorite places in Texas or traveling around the world, she found delight in the simple things. Walking the coast in Rockport with her beloved dog Monte. Taking a dip in the Guadalupe River in McQueeney. Watching for shooting stars from a riverbank in Wimberley.

FRI. August 28, 2026

Enjoying a sunset in Kingsbury. These are the moments Judy loved best. That same spirit led her around the world wandering the streets of Prague, taking in the coastline of Portugal, marveling at the glaciers of Alaska and soaking up the sun in Mexico. Wherever she went, she went with curiosity and an open heart, and she went in good company. To know Judy was to feel loved. She was an extraordinary mother and even better Omi to her six grandchildren. She made ordinary moments feel like occasions and built traditions her family will carry forever. With Christmas as her favorite, she hosted an annual Semmler Christmas Eve party along with a cookie decorating party, both not complete without Bing Crosby on repeat and Judy singing along. It is with big shoes to fill that her parties will continue, her spirit living on, her children knowing she is singing and preparing in just another room. Judy is survived by her husband of fifty-five years, John; her children Erin Semmler Lehnert and spouse Cory Don Lehnert, Emily Elizabeth Semmler, Amanda Kate Switalski and spouse Brian Robert Switalski, Kate Semmler Cornelius and spouse Trey Cornelius; and her cherished grandchildren Jack William Lehnert, Sarah Elizabeth Lehnert, William Gready “Gray” Cornelius, John “Cooper” Cornelius, Andrew Frels Cornelius and Benjamin Frels Cornelius; siblings, Jack Frels and partner Katherine Metzger, Stephen Frels, Terry Buck and husband Dee, Mary Briers and husband Lewis, Chris Frels and wife Sharon, and Tony Frels and wife Harriette; brother-in-law, Rob Gordon; sister-in-law, Suzy Wilson; numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members, and a host of friends including her beloved Seguin High School Class of 1969. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leo Frels and Estelle Frels Hill, and her sister, Jan Frels Gordon. With a warm smile and a giving heart, Judy touched the world with laughter and kindness. Her legacy of deep love and unwavering integrity will shine through her family and everyone blessed to know her. Visitation will begin Saturday, August 29, 2026, at 9 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church in Seguin, with the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 9:30 a.m. followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. A reception will follow at the Red Barn at 250 Cordova Rd, Seguin, TX 78155. Memorial contributions may be made to Memorials Processing, St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, Tn, 38105-9959 or to Angel Babies Matter Network. New Pill Doubles Survival Rate For Patients With Pancreatic Cancer (Washington, DC) -- A new pill’s been approved that nearly doubles the survival rates of patients dealing with pancreatic cancer. The FDA on Wednesday approved a new pill from Revolution Medicine called Rasonque [[ Ras-un-Q ]], which is taken once daily and inhibits a form of protein that makes tumors grow. The FDA says the pill is a treatment option for patients with advanced pancreatic cancer, which is one of the most deadly forms of cancer. In a late-stage clinical trial, patients who took the pill on average lived twice as long as those who got chemotherapy. The company that makes the pill says out-of-pocket costs for Rasonque will be about 40-thousand dollars a month. NFLPA Emails All Players After New CTE Study (Undated) -- The NFL Players Association is acting accordingly following a new CTE study. On Tuesday, the union sent out an email regarding the study to all players and to all player agents. This comes after Massachusetts General Brigham and Boston University released a report on Monday that found at least 25-percent of ex-NFL players who died between 2016 and 2021 had CTE. In the email, the NFLPA says the findings should serve as a “call to action across the entire football ecosystem,” and that they all share a responsibility to advance research and support those affected by the long-term impacts of the game. CTE is a degenerative brain disease that’s linked to repeated head trauma and can only be diagnosed after death. Thyroid Tablets Recalled Over Superpotency Concerns (Washington, DC) -- A company is recalling a lot of thyroid tablets because they could potentially be “superpotent.” The FDA announced that the high potency 30 milligram tablets could cause hyperthyroidism, or an overactive thyroid. Consuming them could result in weight loss, heat intolerance, fatigue, chest pain, and other symptoms. Vitruvias Therapeutics is working on notifying wholesalers to stop distribution. Parton’s Philanthropy Leaving Lasting Impact on TN Children’s Health, Vaccine Research (Nashville, TN) -- Dolly Parton’s philanthropy is leaving a lasting impact on children’s healthcare and vaccine research in Tennessee. Her one-milliondollar gift to Vanderbilt University helped develop the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. Parton later donated another one-million dollars for pediatric infectious disease research and supported childhood cancer care at Vanderbilt. East Tennessee Children’s Hospital now carries her name, while her 80th birthday song raised money for pediatric cancer research. Hospital officials say her support has advanced treatment and care for children with cancer.
