Traffic stop turns into $5,800 blessing for local students Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- What began as a routine traffic stop earlier this year is ending with a blessing for area students – and just in time for the new school year.

This past spring, a Guadalupe County deputy pulled over a vehicle for a traffic violation. The odor of marijuana gave deputies probable cause to search the vehicle, leading to the discovery of a small amount of marijuana. During the search, William Herring, a constable for Pct. 4, says officials also uncovered a stash of high-end clothing—complete with store security sensors still attached—believed to have been stolen from retailers.

“We searched the car. Some marijuana paraphernalia stuff was in the vehicle and then I noticed when I popped the back hatchet of the SUV, there was a load of clothing – an unusual amount of clothing and then I noticed all these antitheft security tags were on the clothes as well as the price tags – that is unusual. After questioning them, they denied taking anything but couldn’t account for where it came from. So, we seized the clothes based on the suspicion that they were stolen, the subjects were released until we could figure out any more information,” said Herring.

(Geronimo) -- In Navarro ISD, we lovingly refer to our district as the Panther Family, and we mean it. The district is known for having multiple generations of families attend Navarro ISD, as well as a legacy of graduates who become teachers and return to their roots here in the heart of Geronimo, instilling the values and lessons they once learned in our classrooms. For the Haltom family—Will, Sarah, and their two daughters, Olivia York and Lilian Odale, both proud Navarro graduates—that sentiment is a daily reality woven into the fabric of their lives, both at home and in the halls of Navarro High School.

The Haltom family’s calling to education is clear.

Will, with 29 years of teaching experience, and Sarah, a veteran of nine years at Navarro ISD, have dedicated their lives to education. While they always encouraged their daughters to follow their own paths, it was a profound moment for Sarah when Olivia, as a high school senior, felt a divine calling to become a special education teacher, a field she shares with her mother who teaches Functional Academics. Lilian, too, knew from a young age that teaching was her destiny, drawn by the visible passion her parents had for their students. Despite their parents’ gentle warnings about the profession’s demands, both daughters were unstoppable, fueled by their own passion for helping students succeed.

Working together has turned the school into a shared home. Sarah describes the joy of seeing her family throughout the day, while Will, who initially planned to only teach for one more year before retiring, was so blessed by the experience that he decided to stay another year. “Working with my family makes my job so much more enjoyable and has been such a blessing. I get to ride with my wife every day and pray with her before school starts,” he shares.

Olivia expresses her gratitude for the opportunity to work alongside her family. “My mom and I are in the same department, my sister is my co-teacher, and I get to eat lunch with my dad every day—not many people get to say that!”

This shared environment allows them to support each other in unique ways. Lilian, in her first year, was mentored by her father, Will, as they co-taught Algebra I. The two regularly prepared lessons together and helped each other navigate difficult situations. Sarah, the matriarch, serves as a sounding board and confidant, celebrating their wins and offering support during challenges. She gently enforces a “no shop talk” rule during their weekly Sunday lunches, setting a great example of balancing their professional and family lives.z`

The students are very aware of the Haltom family dynamic, which has led to some heartwarming and hilarious moments. Sarah recalls a nonverbal student who would get excited every time she saw Mr. Haltom walking down the hall, doing everything she could to let her know he was coming. Will, well known for his “dad jokes,” makes his rounds to his wife’s classroom each day, and the students eagerly await his arrival. His romantic side was also on display when he sent a student to Sarah’s classroom with a single rose each period on their anniversary until she had a full dozen.

For Lilian, who co-teaches with Olivia, the family bond is a benefit. “It’s always fun for me to talk about my family with my students,” she says, though she laughs that it often takes multiple reminders for the students to fully grasp the family connection because they don’t all share the same last name.

When asked to describe the essence of being a teacher at Navarro High School in one word, the family’s responses speak volumes. For Sarah, the word is “Flexibility.” Olivia chose “Family,” a word that Will also echoes. Lilian’s word, “Blessed,” encapsulates the family’s collective feeling. As she puts it, “I just feel blessed that Navarro would not only hire one of us, but that they hired all four of us and continue to support us in our profession.”

The Haltom family is a testament to the power of community, support, and shared purpose and serves as an inspiration to the future of the teaching profession.

They are a living embodiment of the Panther Family spirit—a family of educators united by a love for their students and a deep connection to Navarro ISD. They are, in every sense of the word, truly a Panther Family.

Regional Apprenticeship Employer Event set for today in New Braunfels Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(New Braunfels) -- Employers from across Seguin, New Braunfels and Greater San Antonio still have time secure their spot at today’s Regional Employer Convening on Registered Apprenticeships — an event aimed at helping local businesses tap into new strategies for growing skilled talent.

The gathering will be held at Texas State Technical College in New Braunfels.

Hosted by a coalition that includes the City of San Antonio’s Apprenticeship Building America program, greater:SATX, Comal ISD, the New Braunfels Chamber

of Commerce Economic Development, Seguin Economic Development Corporation, and the Texas Plumbing-HeatingCooling Contractors Association, the event is designed to connect employers directly with resources, incentives, and success stories from businesses already benefiting from apprenticeship models.

Organizers say attendees will hear from major employers who have successfully implemented RAPs, gain insights on building pre-apprenticeship pathways, and learn about tax credits and state-level programs available to

Herring along with Guadalupe Constable Pct. 4 Harvey Faulkner took possession of the property, allowing the vehicle’s owners the opportunity to claim it at the Justice of the Peace office. Faulkner says after the case went to a court hearing, letters were sent to advise how to retrieve the items.

“Judge set a trial date for it, sent them a letter – no one responded so that’s when the clothes were awarded to Pct. 4. Most of them were Nike clothes. So, when we saw the tags on it, we said ‘nah, this is not right.’ We were just looking for a place to donate them and a guy that I go to church with suggested we donate them to this organization so that’s how we came up with it,” said Faulkner.

When no one stepped forward, Faulkner says Judge Todd Friesenhahn of Precinct 4 awarded the unclaimed property to the Constable’s Office.

And rather than store the items, Faulkner, with the suggestion of a fellow church member, says he knew those clothes could serve a greater purpose. Valued at more than $5,800, the brand-named clothing he says will now be donated to Lifegate Christian School as the new school year begins.

“We discussed giving them to different organizations and we were thinking of schools, but schools usually have

companies looking to launch or expand their efforts. Organizers say it’s also a chance for businesses to make connections and take the next steps toward developing a sustainable talent pipeline.

The constable’s office recently met up with folks from Lifegate to hand over the donation. Brianna Teboe, the president of the Lifegate booster club, says the school is appreciative for the donation.

“Until we came today, we didn’t know what we were receiving and so we are just incredibly blessed. It looks like mostly athletic gear and so a lot of this is going to go to our athletic students, I believe. We do have track, basketball and volleyball teams that are going to be able to benefit from this and so it’s just a huge blessing all around,” said Teboe.

Herring says finding such a large amount of new clothing while on the job is not something that happens every day – and lucky for these local kids, the timing was just perfect.

“I’m grateful that we were able to seize the clothes.

Obviously, they were stolen and I’m happy that we were able to get them and put them to use in an organization that may need them for kids instead of people that are thieves. It’s a good thing. I’m grateful for it. I am glad that it worked out the way it did,” said Herring.

Both county officials and Lifegate recently celebrated the donation with a photo opportunity outside the steps of the Guadalupe County Courthouse.

Seguin boys force play-in game; Marion andTLU Navarro girls fall out of playoffs Bulldogs start workouts

(Seguin) -- The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs held their first practice on Tuesday as they get ready for another season in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

In 2024, the Bulldogs improved from two to nine wins and earned a conference co-championship. TLU will have senior Caden Bosanko back at quarterback. The San Antonio East Central product was named SCAC Co-Offensive Player of the Year and was a First Team All-SCAC selection during his junior campaign.

Defensively, the Bulldogs allowed only 15.9 points per game last season. The defense will welcome back safety Troy Tomaselli, one of the top defensive players in the SCAC, was a finalist for SCAC Defensive Player of the Year last year as a sophomore and he earned First Team All-

SCAC honors.

Head coach Neal LaHue was named the SCAC Coach of the Year following the 2024 season. LaHue, who is entering his fourth season at the helm of the TLU program, said he was happy with the effort of his team on day one of practice.

“We have a lot of bodies out here right now and the guys are really moving around,” LaHue said. “We have a lot of guys learning with 78 new guys (in practice). So, the learning process, day one, I’m very pleased with the effort and all that, but we’ve got a long way to go in execution.”

The Bulldogs advanced to the second round of the NCAA DivisionIII playoffs in 2024. The 2025 season begins on a Thursday night when TLU hosts rival Trinity at Bulldog Stadium on September 4th.

Silvia

Eileen Mary Silvia, also known as Mrs. Hotshots, the Queen of McQueeney, and more affectionately, Mom and Gigi, died on July 20, 2025 peacefully in her home surrounded by her family. Eileen was born Aug. 16, 1935 to George and Alice Holt in Derby, England. She was the second of their three children.

Eileen, along with her husband, Philip Silvia, bought Hotshot’s Lakeview Camp in 1973 and expanded it to a full fledge restaurant that was known for its Friday Night Fish Fries and Hotshot’s famous green bean salad.

It was on the banks of the Guadalupe River where Eileen began expanding her family beyond her husband and four children. She considered any and all employees her child and her customers family and friends. While she loved all of her extended family, none could compare to that of her immediate family.

After the Flood of ’98, Eileen worked for Seguin ISD as an aide, helping children read. She also spent several years working at Walmart as a door greeter in the garden center.

She loved basketball and was an avid supporter of the Lady Matador Basketball team and enjoyed watching any NBA game on television, especially the San Antonio Spurs. She had a special place in her heart for all animals. She supported the Guadalupe County Humane Society any chance she could get, including playing Santa for its annual fundraiser.

She was quick to give you a hug or give you her personal salute followed by

Joyce Theresa Bonaventure Leissner, 88 passed away peacefully at her home in Seguin on July 22, 2025. Joyce was born on September 7, 1936 in Oscar, Louisiana to Beulah (Hernandez) and Threz Bonaventure.

She graduated co-valedictorian from Rougon High School in Lakeland, LA, in 1954. She attended nursing school in New Orleans at Charity Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in 1957 with a Registered Nurse diploma.

Joyce was a woman of remarkable skills, known for her incredible talent as a seamstress and an avid bridge player. Her amazing bedside manner was front and center during her career as a registered Nurse for 50+ years including 40 years at GRMC. Her passion for sewing & quilting was evident in the beautiful pieces she created, each stitch infused with her love and care. She also had a deep appreciation for gardening, where she lovingly tended to her African Violets and outdoor plants. Joyce found beauty in these blooms, just as she found beauty in the relationships she nurtured throughout her life. She was a member of multiple bridge groups, St. Ann’s Circle at St. James Catholic Church and a true-blue friend to ladies across the country.

Joyce met the love of her life, Jim Leissner, at New Orleans Mardi Gras in 1957 and married him in 1958. They moved to Seguin in the early 1970’s and, as a devoted wife and mother, she exhibited boundless love and patience, becoming both a guiding light and a nurturing support for her family. Linda Kay Grossman Crees, age 82 of Seguin, passed away on August 5, 2025. Linda was born on January 12, 1943 in Hebbronville, Texas to Theresa (Baker) and Robert Anthony Grossman.

Linda was preceded in death by her son, Robert “Rob” Lester Dietrich, Jr., her parents, her brother, Robert Grossman, and her sisters, Theresa Fielder and Pam Farrington.

NJ Company Issues Nationwide Soap Recall Due To Potential Life-Threatening Sepsis (North Bergen, NJ) -- A New Jersey medical supplier is issuing a nationwide recall of its soaps due to the potential of life-threatening bacterial infections, including sepsis. DermaRite says its voluntary recall involves over a dozen soap and sanitizer products sold across the country and Puerto Rico, including DermaKleen lotion soaps, PeriGiene antiseptic and KleenFoam soap. Several lots were found to be contaminated with a microbe called Burkholderia cepecia. The CDC says it can easily spread from person-to-person and is difficult to treat, especially in people who are immunocompromised or who have cystic fibrosis or chronic lung disease. DermaRite says, at this point, it’s received no reports of adverse reactions.

August Is National Immunization Awareness Month (Atlanta, GA) -- This is National Immunization Awareness Month. The CDC says recommended vaccines for children have been around for years and have proven to be safe and effective with mild side effects and rare complications. Dr. Kimberley Giuliano, a pediatrician at the Cleveland Clinic, notes that they help protect against diseases that can cause serious illness, hospitalization, long-term disabilities and even death. She says that while a growing number of parents remain hesitant to get their children vaccinated, skipping shots not only puts their kids at risk but endangers other children around them.

AI Could Detect Laryngeal Cancer (Undated) -- Artificial intelligence may be able to detect the early stages of laryngeal cancer. Researchers found that some abnormalities in the larynx can be detected from the sound of the voice. The research, published in Frontiers in Digital Health, suggests AI could be trained to listen for those abnormalities.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea Symptoms Lessened Using Conch Shell (Yorkshire, England) -- Some relief from obstructive sleep apnea symptoms may be found by using a conch shell. That’s according to a study published in ERJ Open Research. It found people blowing through a conch shell daily for several months showed reduced symptoms. Sleep tests measured fewer apnea episodes per hour and improved blood oxygen levels. Researchers say the exercise likely strengthens and tones upper airway muscles.

September Goodbye Summer All Media Art Show at Seguin Art League The Seguin Art League will be hosting the Goodbye Summer All Media Art Show submission drop-off from 10:00 a.m. to noon on August 30 at 104 S. Austin Street, Seguin. The show is open to all artists 18 and over, with an entry fee of $15 per artwork for members and $20 per artwork for non-members. A reception and award ceremony will take place from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 3. The exhibit will remain on display through October 11.
