TxDOT provides update on I-10 widening project through Seguin

WEEKEND EDITION

TODAY

Darren Dunn

(Seguin) -The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is providing an update on the major widening project along Interstate 10 here in Seguin. They say the work, which remains ahead of schedule, continues between FM 464 and SH 130. TxDOT crews for the last several months have been focused on several major improvements throughout the corridor. According to TxDOT, the project includes widening I-10 from four to six lanes between FM 464 and SH 123, rebuilding ramps, converting frontage roads to one-way traffic and constructing new bridges.

They say current work includes roadway paving and improvements, bridge construction at multiple locations, retaining wall installation and safety upgrades throughout the highway. Over the next two months, TxDOT says crews will continue work on the new eastbound frontage road, advance bridge construction, install additional concrete pavement and complete other safety improvements. The good news, however, for drivers, according to TxDOT, is that no major traffic pattern changes are planned during the next two months. TxDOT, pg. 3

Students head back to class in the Marion ISD Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Marion) -- Marion ISD students are among the first batch of students to return to class. Today marks the first day of school for all Marion campuses. Marion ISD Superintendent Dr. Don Beck says as families make their way back, he is asking parents to bring a little extra patience. “The first thing that I’ll tell everybody is just, hey, for one more

year, pack your patience a little bit,” said Beck. “We got all this construction going on, but it’ll start winding down pretty soon. There are a lot of new people coming in, and so they have to learn our methods and how we get students in and out of the car lines. It works pretty fluidly, and so it just takes time.” Marion, pg. 3

Cibolo residents encouraged to attend public meeting on proposed data center Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Cibolo) - Residents will have an opportunity next week to learn more about a proposed data center project currently in the works over in Cibolo. The opportunity will also allow questions about its potential impact on the community. Cibolo Place 3 Councilwoman Marissa-Ellen Patterson has been among the leaders taking a strong role in encouraging residents to attend the upcoming public meeting “as interest and concern surrounding the proposed development continues.” The proposed 243,000 square-foot, 50-megawatt data center will be located on a 39-acre plot at 1000 Bolton Road – the former San Antonio Karting Complex. Patterson has been sharing information with residents through social media in an effort to provide additional background on the project, the city’s approval process and some of the questions being raised by members of the community. As part of those efforts, Patterson recently shared a video presentation featuring Rick Vasquez, the City of Cibolo’s director of planning and economic development. The presentation addresses what a data center is, how the project’s approval process worked under the regulations in place at the time and the city’s plans moving forward regarding transparency and information. In the videotaped council meeting being shared, Patterson explains the goal of the presentation. “I know many residents have concerns about this project. I know it’s generated a lot of questions and different concerns within our community. So, I appreciate everyone who’s taken the time to ask questions, be engaged. My goal is to make sure that the public has accurate information, they understand the process that occurred and knows what council is doing moving forward to improve transparency. So, over the past few weeks, we’ve heard from residents, spent a lot of time gathering information, meeting with city staff, getting information from our utility. partners and I’m really just looking to separate the facts from speculation,” said Patterson. She has also made additional documents available to residents, including a Data Center Entitlements &

Resources presentation and a presentation from Green Valley Special Utility District. The city’s data center materials “address a range of issues associated with the project, including its planning history, zoning and land use, site plan approvals, water and wastewater services, projected water use, electrical infrastructure and noise standards.” The Green Valley SUD presentation “addresses the utility district’s responsibilities under Texas law, including its obligation to provide water and wastewater service within its certificated service area, as well as the limits of the utility district’s authority regarding development decisions.” Residents can view the city presentation on either the city of Cibolo or the Vasquez on the City of Cibolo Facebook page. Cibolo Data Center presentation A town hall meeting will be held from 6:30 to 8:45 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 17. It will be followed by a special meeting at 9 p.m. at Steel High School Auditorium located at 1300 FM 1103.

TxDOT, continued. The project which began in January 2024 is slated for completion in the summer of 2029. Meanwhile, drivers are reminded about this week’s SH 123 closure for bridge work. As part of this same ongoing I-10 project, TxDOT reminds drivers that SH 123 will be closed nightly between the I-10 eastbound and westbound frontage roads. Marion, continued. Beck says these next first few weeks is always a learning curve -- navigating around new facilities and/or getting familiar to a brandnew campus. He says students are no doubt returning to what has become one of the newest fastest-growing school districts in the area. “All the stuff that started way back when, when anticipated growth -- well it’s showing itself now,” said Beck. “We have several subdivisions that have opened up and a couple that we didn’t know about that sprang up. Right now,

The closure is scheduled now through Saturday, Aug. 15 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Drivers will be detoured around the closure, with southbound traffic directed to the I-10 westbound frontage road and SH 123 Business, while northbound traffic will be routed onto the eastbound frontage road and I-10 before returning to SH 123. TxDOT advises motorists to allow extra travel time, follow posted detour signs and use caution around construction crews and equipment.

I believe there’s right at about 5 to 6,000 homes that are on the books that are planned… so we know the growth is coming.” The district ended the last school year with 1,747 students. Beck says he expects enrollment to exceed 1,800 students when classes begin. “If every kid who comes and every kid who signed up and all that, we’re looking at over 1,800 students here, more than likely to start the school year,” said Beck. “It’s a big jump for us.” While the growth is exciting, Beck says it also requires the district to stay ahead of future needs.

“We do see it coming and it’s fairly constant, and we’re trying to prepare our best for it,” said Beck. Meanwhile despite the growth and continued construction, Beck says district staff is eager to get back into the classroom. “Ultimately, we’re in for a great year. We’re excited,” said Beck. “We’re here to do what’s best for them, and we’re excited about what’s coming.” Marion ISD parents are reminded to follow the district’s social media pages for any updates or last-minute changes to the school day these next few days. Both Seguin and Navarro ISD enjoy their first day back on Wednesday, Aug. 19.

GUNCKEL

Joann “Jodi” Hall Gunckel, age 89 of Seguin, passed away on August 6, 2026. Jodi was born on April 22, 1937, in San Antonio, Texas to Elena (Vargas) and John Hall. Jodi was one of the most positive and caring person anyone could know. This was reflected in the more than 40 comments and three shares on her Facebook page. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio, Texas, in 1955 and was attending San Antonio College when she met Charles Butler, who was serving in the U.S. Air Force. They were married for 15 years before he passed away while serving in Spain, where Jodi and their two children had accompanied him. The family traveled extensively during the period as a military family, joining Charles at bases from the East coast to the West coast, and to his final assignment at a base in Spain. While in Spain Jodi and her family became immersed in the Spanish culture. In 1972, Jodi and her children returned to San Antonio and settled in the MacArthur High School area, where she purchased a home. While raising her children, Jodi enrolled at San Antonio College and earned an associate degree in 1974. She continued her education at UTSA, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1978 and a master’s degree in education in 1985. She then began a 20-year career as a history teacher at Judson High School. There, she met band director Bill Skelton, whom she married in 1980. Jodi deeply enjoyed her brief time with Bill, attending band concerts and many outings organized by band directors. He passed away five years later, leaving her a widow again. Larry Gunckel was also teaching in the history department at the time. After they had worked together for five years, Larry’s wife passed away. In time, Larry and Jodi’s friendship grew into a relationship, and they

married during spring break in 1988. They remained married until Jodi’s passing in 2026. Friends often joked that her full name was Jo Ann Hall Neumann Butler Skelton Gunckel. After retiring, Jodi and Larry purchased an RV and traveled to all 48 contiguous states. They spent much of their time in Tucson, Arizona, where they bought a mobile home in a 50-and-over community. They still maintained residence, first in Bulverde and for the last 20 years in Seguin. They made many friends in these locations, age and difficulty in traveling forced them to stay in Seguin. Jodi was a devoted Catholic who remained active in her church wherever she lived. About four years ago, health issues prevented her from participating, but her faith stayed strong. As her life neared its end, she remained positive. On the last day she could communicate verbally, although she could no longer speak in complete sentences, she repeated, “It’s OK, it’s OK,” and “I did my best, I did my best.” Yes, you did Jodi and your best was fantastic. Jodi is preceded in death by her parents, her son David Butler, and her step-sons, Forrest Gunckel and Gary Gunckel. Survivors include her loving husband of 38 years, Larry Gunckel, daughter Cathi Barnes, stepdaughters Cindy Curnel and husband Avery, Terry Atkinson, sister Helen Reynolds and husband Roy, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other loving family members and friends. PENALUNA

Stephen H. Penaluna was born September 22, 1948, in Rensselaer, Indiana, to Lovetra Aleen (Mynatt) and Richard Edwards Penaluna. Stephen and his sister, Connie, were both adopted and raised by loving parents. Stephen considered his adoption a blessing and was proud to have been chosen and deeply loved by his family. His father served as an Air Force chaplain, and Stephen’s childhood took him to various military bases, on the West Coast and in Panama. Following his father’s active-duty military career, the family settled in Saratoga, California, where his father pastored a church. Stephen graduated from Westmont High School in 1966 and went on to graduate from the University of California, Riverside, in 1970 with a degree in sociology and a minor in music. Stephen met his beloved red head, Adriana Lewis, at church in Saratoga, California, and they were married in 1974. Together they raised four children. Their life centered on family, homeschooling and adventures together through the many moves required by Stephen’s military and civilian careers. They lived in Arizona, Colorado, California, Alaska, and Kansas, before settling in Seguin, Texas, where they retired to be near family. Stephen was a hard worker from his high school years onward and held a variety of jobs before building a successful career in banking. He also spent a brief period driving a log truck before beginning a ten-year active-duty career in the United States Army with the Criminal Investigation Command. After leaving active duty while stationed in Alaska, he transitioned into civil service and spent another 18 years working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in wetlands permitting. Stephen was saved at the age of seven and remained faithful to the Lord throughout his life. He was a devoted church member and served in music ministry, and as a Deacon wherever he lived. He was always involved in Bible studies and even helped establish a still thriving church that began as a Bible study in his home in Arizona. Music was an important part of Stephen’s life from an early age and remained a lifelong passion. He played many instruments, including piano, organ, banjo, guitar, and sousaphone, and sang as a bass in choirs throughout his life. His primary instrument was the bass trombone, which he played with great skill and enthusiasm. He participated in marching band, symphony,

community bands and church music ministry. One of Stephen’s greatest passions was automobiles. He was a skilled mechanic who could often diagnose a problem simply by hearing the motor over the phone. He shared his knowledge and love of cars with his children and grandchildren, creating countless memories working together on vehicles. He built a Model A at just 19 years old and later owned other antique cars. He enjoyed participating in car clubs, attending car shows, displaying his vehicles in parades, and winning trophies for his beloved cars “Flossie” and “Lucile”. For ten years, Stephen worked part-time at Tres Hewell Mortuary in Seguin, a role he considered a ministry. His genuine compassion and ability to connect with people allowed him to offer comfort and friendship during times of loss. Stephen was a people person who had a remarkable ability to connect with people from all walks of life. Whether talking with a businessman, a mechanic, a fellow church member, or someone he had just met, he took a sincere interest in others and made them feel valued. Stephen will be remembered for his faithful service to the Lord, his love for people, his devotion to his family, his passion for music and automobiles, and his willingness to encourage others wherever he went. He will be deeply missed by his wife, children, grandchildren, extended family, church family, car club friends, and the many people whose lives he touched. Stephen is preceded in death by his parents, his mother-in-law and fatherin-law, Alice and George Lewis, and brother-in-law, Alan Lewis. Survivors include his loving wife of 52 years, Adriana Lewis Penaluna; children, Devin Penaluna and wife Deborah, Marjorie Miller, Chelsea Farran and husband Ryan, and Scott Penaluna; grandchildren, Elissa Evans and husband James, Brett Penaluna, Abigale Penaluna, Nathan Penaluna, Tristan Miller, Tait Miller, Grant Miller, Blythe Farran, Byron Farran, and Chaucer Farran; sister, Connie Knapp; brother-in-law, Paul Lewis and wife Michelle Lundquist; two cousins, several nieces, nephews, other loving family members and a host of friends, including his car club friends and his beloved church family. Visitation will begin on Monday, August 17, 2026, at Pathway Bible Church, 1314 E. Cedar, Seguin, at 10 a.m. followed by funeral service at 11 a.m. including military honors, with the Reverend Dr. Brice Mandaville officiating. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall. Report: Millions Have Difficult Access To Maternity Care (Arlington, VA) -- Millions of Americans have difficulties getting access to maternity care. An annual report from the March of Dimes out this week finds more than 34 percent of counties in the U.S. are “maternity care deserts,” where women have to drive an average of three times farther to get labor and delivery service than places with full access. It can lead to higher instances of unplanned deliveries outside of a hospital and higher rates of complications during pregnancy. Since the start of 2024, at least 96 labor and delivery units have closed in 35 states, the majority of them being the only local birthing facility in their area. Researchers Say Belly Fat Predicts Heart Risk Better Than BMI (Baltimore, MD) -- A new study shows that belly fat predicts a person’s heart disease risk more accurately than BMI. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine looked at 260-thousand adults over 20 years and found that waist and waist-to-hip ratio was a much better indicator to forecast both heart and brain events. They say that’s because body mass index can’t tell whether a person has more fat sitting right below the skin or more visceral fat, the dangerous kind that surrounds internal organs in the abdomen. Their message is that we all need to reduce our obsession with BMI and body weight. Their findings are published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Medicaid Will No Longer Fund Gender Transition Procedures (Washington, DC) -- The Trump administration says Medicaid will no longer fund gender transition procedures for minors. In a Truth Social post, President Trump wrote, “We are not going to pay for our innocent children to undergo these barbaric surgeries and practices, which result in unthinkable and irreversible harm to their young bodies.” The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced the funding will be available for a tapering-off period of up to six months for children currently on hormone therapy. The new rule is scheduled to take effect October 13th. Vanderbilt Maps Hidden Signals Behind Heart Rejection (Nashville, TN) -- Tennessee scientists are unlocking genetic clues that could reshape how doctors treat heart transplant rejection. Researchers at Vanderbilt University mapped cell-by-cell gene activity in heart tissue samples from dozens of transplant patients, comparing tissue during rejection with samples taken after treatment. The study shows major genetic differences among biopsies with the same rejection score, highlighting important patterns between patients who responded to medication and those who did not. About 20 percent of heart transplant recipients currently face acute rejection in their first year. Vanderbilt researchers say this new technique could ultimately help doctors predict treatment responses.
