Seguin Parks seeking instructors for after-school JAAM program
WEEKEND EDITION
TODAY
Darren Dunn
(Seguin) -- Need a job -preferably after school? The City of Seguin is looking to add staff for its JAAM ( Jammin’ After-School Adventures for Me) after-school program. The Parks and Recreation Department is hiring both instructors and lead instructors to work with elementary students at the five participating campuses across the Seguin ISD. Erica Taft, assistant director of parks and recreation, says instructors play an important role
in providing a safe and engaging environment for children after school each day. “Our instructor works with the kids every day after school playing games with the kids and making sure the environment is safe and they’re engaged until their parents pick them up,” said Taft. Taft says lead instructors take on additional responsibilities, including overseeing daily operations, communicating with parents and helping manage student behavior. JAAM, pg. 3
Diving back into the books! This month’s Seguin Today takes you on a back-to-school journey that first invites you to meet Guadalupe County Superintendents as they prepare for the school year. You’ll read in their own words what their hopes and goals are for students this coming year. Then we invite you inside the new McQueeney Elementary to get a first-hand look at the newly built campus. From top to bottom, you’ll see photos and read the story of how it all came to be. Finally, we take a look back at the opening of the new Agricultural Science campus at Seguin High School, just in case you missed it. Marion ISD bond projects coming together in time for new school year Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Marion) -- With students returning to class next week, Marion ISD is entering what Superintendent Dr. Don Beck calls the final major phase of the district’s voter-approved bond improvements. Beck says the district’s multi-year construction program continues to make significant progress as construction crews race to finish several projects before students arrive on Thursday, Aug. 13. “We were in year three of this major overhaul of this area here. We came up with the idea that, you know, we’re cooking sausage, and when you cook sausage, it’s a nasty mess, and then in the end, when you cook it, it tastes delicious. Well, we’re in phase three of that… this year we’re cooking the sausage,” said Beck. Among the biggest accomplishments this summer is the completion of the secondary campus cafeteria renovation. Beck says the district has also completed replacement of HVAC systems across all campuses. “We’ll finally have all of our mechanical -- the AC
units -- totally switched out in all the campuses. That’s supposed to be up and running. In fact, they’re all blowing cold today, which is a great sign,” said Beck. Parking improvements are also nearing completion, including a renovated lot between the district’s elementary campuses and another behind the football stadium. That space will provide additional parking for the high school. Although many projects will come online this fall, Beck says construction will continue beyond the start of school. “The other two big pieces of those projects are the weight room, locker room, competition gym—that should be coming on board and fully operational by right at the beginning of 2027,” said Beck. “Then we have a fine arts wing that’s also there that has a new black box, a new theater classroom and a new band hall that should be connected and up and running by February, March.” District officials say whatever projects aren’t done now will more than likely be completed before the school year is out.

JAAM, continued. Taft says applicants don’t necessarily need “years of professional experience to get started as instructors.” “To be an instructor, you just have to have some experience with kids. So we have high school students who have babysat a lot. We have college students who have worked in other programs like YMCA or Boys and Girls Club or community center, or they’re a teaching major,” said Taft. Applicants must be at least 16 years old to serve as instructors. Those interested in becoming lead instructors must be at least 18 years old, have a driver’s license and previous experience working with children. The JAAM program operates through the first day of school until the last day of the school year. Those interested in applying or learning more about available positions can contact the Seguin Parks and Recreation Department at 830-401-2480.
make a turnaround and follow the eastbound frontage road back to SH 123. Northbound SH 123 traffic will be directed onto the I-10 eastbound frontage road and into the eastbound main lanes. Drivers should exit at U.S. 90, make a turnaround and enter the I-10 westbound main lanes before exiting at SH 123. Hunter Biden Says Former President Biden’s Prostate Cancer Has Spread (Undated) -- Former President Biden’s prostate cancer has spread. That’s according to his son, Hunter Biden, who gave an update on his father’s health during a wide-ranging interview with the BBC on Friday. Hunter Biden got emotional when discussing his father’s health. He said the cancer has “metastasized into his bones and further” and added that “it’s very painful and it’s very debilitating in many respects.” The 83-year-old Biden was diagnosed with Stage Four prostate cancer diagnosis in May 2025, four-months after his time in the White House ended. Drinking Coffee Linked To Lower Breast Cancer Death Risk (London) -- New research suggests that drinking coffee could lower the risk of breast cancer death. The study, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, followed nearly one-hundred women over eleven years who’d been diagnosed with breast cancer. Scientists found that a higher intake of total polyphenol was linked to lower breast cancer death risk. In the study researchers noted that coffee was the major contributor to total polyphenol intake for study participants. Taylor Farms Recalling Foods With Jalapenos (Salinas, CA) -- Taylor Farms is recalling food items containing jalapenos over possible salmonella contamination. It comes after the Californiabased company pulled lettuce linked to the ongoing cyclospora outbreak. Taylor Farms said the recalled products include salsas and guacamole, flagged after the fresh peppers were recalled by Coast Citrus Distributors. TikToker from Brooklyn Goes Viral With Warning Of ‘Margarita Burn’ (Brooklyn, NY) -- A Brooklyn woman is going viral with a warning about a margarita-related health hazard. TikToker Haley Peacock claims she got second-degree burns after hand-squeezing 30 limes for a batch of cocktails and then spending the rest of the day in the sun. She tells the New York Post she ended up with blisters the size of golf balls on her hands and had to go to urgent care for treatment. Dermatologists say lime juice is the most common culprit when these burns occur, usually in the summer. Phytophotodermatitis, as it’s called, can also be caused by other plant juices or oils including celery, figs, carrots and parsley. Health experts advise to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling food and to use SPF during extended time in the sun.
