Seguin couple killed in Louisiana plane crash

WEEKEND EDITION

TODAY

Darren Dunn

(Seguin) -- A Seguin husband and wife were killed Thursday when their small airplane crashed near the Bogalusa Airport in southeastern Louisiana. According to WWL-TV in Louisiana, the victims have been identified as 68-year-old William “Bill” Day and his wife, 69-yearold Tommie Day, both of Seguin. The television station reports the Beech H35 aircraft crashed in a wooded area off airport property at approximately 10:48 a.m. Thursday. Firefighters reportedly had to cut through a locked gate to reach the crash site and extinguish the fire. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

WWL-TV reports that the Washington Parish Sheriff ’s Office says small aircraft frequently stop at the Bogalusa Airport for fuel, but it’s not yet known what led to Thursday’s crash. The National Transportation Safety Board has taken over the investigation and will work to determine what caused the aircraft to go down.

New motorcycle ministry makes first community donation Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- A newly established local motorcycle ministry is already putting its mission into motion. The Priesthood Motorcycle Ministry’s Walnut Springs Chapter recently donated $3,000 to the Seguin Housing Authority in support of its annual school supply drive. The Walnut Springs Chapter which officially launched in October 2025 is part of a national motorcycle ministry based in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Robert Acuna, treasurer of the Walnut Springs Chapter, says the donation is just the beginning of the group’s commitment to serving the community. “It’s our first one of many. We are looking to just reach out to the community, through motorcycles and helping out wherever we can,” said Acuna. Acuna says the local chapter is made up of members from several churches, along with motorcycle enthusiasts who share the group’s mission. More importantly, he says you don’t have to own a motorcycle to become involved. The chapter includes pastors and church members from across the area, including Acuna, who serves as

pastor of Straight Street Church, and chapter president Pastor Steve Garza of The Rock Church. Acuna says members intentionally looked for a need they could meet in the community and decided helping children prepare for school was the right place to begin. “We are intentional about reaching out to the community. We are intentional about reaching out to our kids. Our kids are our future. And so, we want to put them in every positive position that we can to be successful in the community, to become productive citizens and we feel like they really shouldn’t have to stress or worry about school supplies -- that should be something that the community gets involved and helps in as well,” said Acuna. Funds for the donation were raised through community fundraisers, including a recent barbecue plate sale held at the American Legion Post 245. Those interested in learning more about the ministry or becoming involved are encouraged to check out the group on Facebook by searching PH Walnut Springs.

Man killed in early morning shooting in Guadalupe County; suspect arrested Darren Dunn

(San Marcos) — A 32-yearold man is dead and another man is behind bars following an early morning shooting in Guadalupe County. The Guadalupe County Sheriff ’s Office says deputies were dispatched at approximately 1:58 a.m. Sunday to a report of shots fired in the 5000 block of Crossover Road in San Marcos. While deputies were responding, additional callers reported hearing multiple gunshots and seeing a man lying in the driveway of a residence. San Marcos police officers arrived first and found 32-year-old Sergio Raynaldo Mata suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Officers administered life-saving

measures, but Mata was pronounced dead at 2:16 a.m. Sheriff ’s deputies later identified 21-year-old Miguel Angel Marquez as the person who allegedly fired the

shots. Marquez was detained at the scene. Investigators say several rounds also struck a vehicle and a home across the street. An adult man had been sleeping in the bedroom where the bullets entered the residence, but he was not injured. Investigators with the sheriff ’s office Criminal Investigations Bureau and a crime scene technician processed the scene and interviewed multiple witnesses. Marquez was arrested and charged with murder and deadly conduct. He remains in custody at the Guadalupe County Adult Detention Center. The investigation remains ongoing.

Trees, continued. Marion ISD Superintendent Dr. Don Beck says the idea came after community members began asking whether any of the trees could be saved before construction moves forward. “We had one or two people ask me, ‘Hey, what are you going to do with all those trees?’ and, you know, if we tried to save any if we could. After those conversations, we decided, you know what? If people want to come out here and buy a tree, but then move it on their own to their location, that’d be great because they’re very well established oak trees,” said Beck. Beck says the site must be raised significantly to accommodate construction, making it impossible to preserve most of the trees. “As they raise the land, it’ll choke off all the trees that are there,” said Beck. “We got anywhere between 40 to 48 trees that are out there. At best, if we’re lucky, we could probably save one, because 6 feet of soil coming in will choke out all those trees, and it just didn’t make cost sense to save them all.” Beck says the district hopes residents with room on their property will relocate them. “If we can find a willing buyer that wants them to put them in their yard and the property or whatnot, we think that’d be the best way to, I guess, to be good stewards of the land and put a good established oak tree somewhere

else,” said Beck. Interested buyers are asked to email Beck with the number of trees they want and the amount they are willing to pay. “They just got to send me an email, and I’ve gotten several emails. I think I’m up to about 8 or 9 people who’ve inquired about them. That doesn’t mean all 40 to 48 trees have been spoken for, but at least I’ve had some interest,” said Beck. Beck says again, it should be noted that all successful bidders will be responsible for digging up, transporting and replanting the trees. “It’s on to that person who purchased it to dig the tree up, move it and plant it because there’s no guarantees the trees will live, but hopefully most of them will,” said Beck. The trees must be removed later this fall to make way for construction. Those interested in a tree or two are asked to email Beck at dbeck@marionisd.net.
