GCSO Deputies recognized for saving lives

(Seguin) – The heroic efforts by a pair of deputies are not going unnoticed over at the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Joshua Ray recently recognized the deputies for initiating life-saving measures during two separate incidents reported across the county.
During a recent awards and recognition ceremony, Sheriff Ray presented the first Life Saver Award to Deputy Laura Gallegos.
“This first one occurred on March 2, 2025. Deputy Laura Gallegos responded to a residence at 300 Weber Road in Guadalupe County for a medical emergency. An adult female victim was choking and blue in the face. The victim’s husband was performing CPR when Deputy Gallegos arrived. Deputy Gallegos quickly reacted by administering life saving measures which ultimately led to a full recovery of the victim and the preservation of life. It’s with great pride that today on March 19, 2025, we present Deputy Gallegos with a Life Saver Award,” announced Ray.
Ray also recognized another
important lifesaving moment just prior to him taking office. He says this second award is being extended to Deputy Eric Nava.
“On December 29, 2024, Deputy Eric Nava responded to 244 Las Brisas Boulevard in Guadalupe County for a medical emergency. When Deputy Nava arrived on scene, an
unresponsive adult victim was sitting in a chair with no observable signs of breathing or a pulse. Despite a family member telling Deputy Nava that the victim was now deceased, Deputy Nava began administering life saving measures. Because of his swift and timely reaction, the male subject was later revived and transported to an
area hospital in stable condition. It is with great pride that today on March 19, 2025, we present the Life Saver Award to Deputy Eric Nava,” said Ray. Ray says people often forget that responding to critical medical emergencies plays a large part in a deputy’s daily routine.

Deadline nears for Pre-K 3 registration in the Seguin ISD
(Seguin) -- Here’s a reminder if you are looking to enroll your child in the Seguin ISD Pre-K 3 program; the deadline to apply for that program is this Thursday, April 3.
Emily Allen, the director of communications for the Seguin ISD, says the enrollment period encourages families to apply for one of the limited spots available at Ball Early Childhood Center. She says it’s important to note that if there are more applicants than space, a lottery will be held to determine the selected students.
“Right now, our Pre-K 3 registration window has opened. It’s actually an application process because you are applying for a spot in that program. Your child for Pre-K 3, must be at least three years old on or before Sept. 1 of this year. They must be unable to speak or understand English. Be educationally disadvantaged meaning they are eligible for the free
or reduced lunch program. They could be parents who are serving -- active duty miliary, being in an active reserve unit or in or have been in foster care or who has a parent or guardian who is eligible for the Star Texas Award, if they are homeless. We have a variety of requirements that would qualify a child to apply
for a Pre-K at Ball,” said Allen. Allen says meeting this Thursday’s application deadline is mandatory for consideration.
“Our Pre-K 3 applications it is on our website so if you go to the Seguin ISD website, you can look down on that same homepage, if you scroll down a little bit, you can see our most recent news and it says Seguin ISD Pre-K 3 applications now open. Once you open that article, it will show our fliers that have all of the qualifications,” said Allen. Those wishing to apply for Prek4 will have to wait a few more days as that application window runs from April 10-11. Registration for Pre-K 4 will be held on Wednesday, April 10 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. followed on Thursday, April 11 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Information on the application process is available on the Seguin ISD or on the Ball Early Childhood Center Facebook page.

Guadalupe County approves cold case investigator

(Seguin) – Unsolved murders in Guadalupe County will soon be getting a fresh set of new eyes.
The Guadalupe County Commissioners Court has approved a request by Sheriff Joshua Ray to add a part-time cold case investigator to his current team. Presenting the request to commissioners on Tuesday was Chief Deputy Tarinna Skrzycki-Pfeil. Pfeil says the sheriff’s office does not currently have a person designated as a cold case investigator.
“Sheriff Ray has a lot of experience with cold cases and knows that throughout the country and sheriff’s offices and police departments, (they) have had success utilizing retired investigators on a part-time basis. If approved, the sheriff will fund this position 100 percent through Sept. 30 from the current temporary (budget) line. There will be no appropriations made,” said Pfeil.
The plan, according to Pfeil will be to temporarily fill the position with a retired and experienced investigator.
Agreeing with this type of expertise was Commissioner Pct. 1 Jacqueline Ott. Ott says she agrees to bringing on these individuals who have worked in different law enforcement environments and believes they can help with those cases that have not had enough traction towards being solved.
Although the funding and pay rate of $37.50 an hour is available in the sheriff’s current budget, the court made it clear that the position would be exactly as proposed and that’s temporary.

There are currently 13 unsolved homicides in Guadalupe County. The oldest case stems back to 1983. Sheriff Joshua Ray later confirmed that this method has proven successful in other jurisdictions where a seasoned investigator comes on board to review cases -- ultimately solving the crime.
He says it’s often too difficult for current investigators to go back to these files especially when they are already doing their best to keep up with current active cases.
Officials say they hope to hire a cold case investigator from outside the department as soon as possible.

Extending these types of awards, according to Ray, is a reminder of all the important roles that a deputy plays in serving and protecting the community. He says they are not only for the recipient but for the community.
“It’s two-fold. I think it’s important that we recognize them. I think they need to know that they are appreciated. This job is hard, and it takes a toll on you, especially over the years. So, I think it’s important that they know that me and the command staff recognize the commitment that they have made not only to the sheriff’s office but to our profession, to
the citizens of Guadalupe County. Secondly, I think it’s important that the community sees what these brave men and women are doing on a daily basis. It’s not just every once in a while, that they are doing these kinds of things. It’s almost every single day that there is some type of story like this. So, when one rises a little bit above the pack, I think it’s important that we recognize them,” said Ray.
Ray hopes to continue this public recognition of his staff. Again, he says it’s important to recognize these heroic actions that occur on “an almost daily basis” throughout the county.
Annie Kay Named SCAC Hitter of the Week
SEGUIN, Texas -- No. 8 Texas Lutheran Softball’s Annie Kay (Sinton/ Sinton) was named Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Hitter of the Week, the conference announced today. The honor is the second for Kay and Texas Lutheran’s third SCAC Hitter of the Week of the season.
Kay led TLU to a 4-0 week that included a sweep of Ozarks (AR) and a win over Trinity to complete the regular season series sweep with a .571 batting average, a triple, eight RBIs, six runs scored, and nine stolen bases. She finished the week with three multiple RBI performances and drove in at least one run in all four games. Kay constantly put pressure on the defense, finishing the week with nine stolen bases to move her into the national lead in all of NCAA Division III with 34 stolen bases on the year. Kay also hit the go-ahead RBI single to stave off an upset attempt from Ozarks (AR) on Saturday.
For the season, Kay is hitting .420, ranking ninth in the SCAC. Kay ranks fifth in the SCAC in runs scored (28) and sixth in hits (34).

Dorothy Mae Kastner Altenhof, resident of Guadalupe County, passed away March 28, 2025 at the age of 94. Dorothy was born in McDade, Texas on January 8, 1931 to Dora Constance (Rother) and Morris Julius Kastner, Sr.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Howard August Altenhof; son, Russell Altenhof; brother, Charlie Klemm (Becky); sisters, Lela Bostic (Willard) and Ivy Ann Cronin and sister-in-law, Lulu Mae Schwab (Vernon).
Survivors include her daughters, Jeanette Barber (Paul) and Shirley Germann (Stephen); grandchildren, David Germann (Katy) and Jamie Altenhof; great-grandchildren, Cora, Rainor, and Opal Germann; brother, Morris Kastner, Jr. (Vernell) and caregiver, Leandra Washington.
Visitation will be Saturday, April 5, 2025 at Emanuel’s Lutheran Church at 9:00 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 10:00 a.m. with Vicar Rudy

Jerry Roger MyCue, age 83 of McQueeney, passed away on March 6, 2025. Jerry was born in Seguin, Texas on November 24, 1941 to Arline (Koepsel) and Roger MyCue.
Raised in Seguin, Jerry graduated from Seguin High School Class of 1960. Jerry earned his Bachelor of Industrial Arts and Master of Arts from Southwest Texas State University, and began his teaching career at Kermit High School. In 1967 he and Carol moved back to Seguin where he took over the Industrial Arts Department at Seguin High School and turned it into a first class state recognized program.
In 1972 he was offered a position with the Texas Education Agency, where he took what he accomplished at Seguin High School and was able to spread it to schools all across the state. His true passion while at the Agency was the Industrial Arts Competition, he grew that program to include over 10,000 volunteers, teachers, and students, as they competed with their wood, metal, and drafting projects and various other areas of Industrial Arts. After 21years with T.E.A., Jerry returned to Seguin High School where as he did his time before, he continued to touch and inspire many lives.

Dorothy was a State 4-H Sewing winner and met her husband on the train to National 4-H Congress in Chicago in 1949. She took pride working alongside her husband building the farm. She was an outstanding conservation homemaker, 4-H Leader, Clear Springs Extension Homemakers member, Guadalupe County Fair volunteer, and Election Poll worker.

Measles Cases Rise Significantly
(Atlanta, GA) -- Measles cases are up significantly this week. That’s according to new data from the CDC. Nearly half of the country is now reporting cases of the contagious virus. An epidemiology professor said in a briefing earlier this month that measles can spread “like a forest fire” in both the vaccinated and unvaccinated. At least 483 cases have been confirmed.
Artificial Sweetener Linked To Brain Changes That Increase Appetite, Study
(Los Angeles, CA) -- A new study is looking at why artificial sweeteners may not help with weight loss. Researchers found that drinks with the artificial sweetener sucralose heightened the feeling of hunger by nearly 17-percent. The study only monitored the impact of sucralose and not other popular artificial sweeteners like aspartame.
WSU Creates AI Model To Predict Virus Outbreaks
(Pullman, WA) -- Washington State University researchers have developed a computer model to help predict which animals might be responsible for the next pandemic. The model uses artificial intelligence and initially focused on smallpox and mpox to determine which host traits and virus genetics might be highest in certain animals and regions of the world. They say a proactive approach could focus on those regions to slow or prevent the spread of a new virus. Nearly three-quarters of emerging viruses that infect humans come from animals.
Apple Investing In Health Care App
(Cupertino, CA) -- Apple is turning its attention to the health industry. According to Bloomberg, the tech company is revitalizing its Health app that includes a new A-I doctor enabled to personalize care. It’s working to advance health sensors and work through operational roadblocks related to monitoring glucose and blood oxygen levels. The company is also including a food tracking feature. The new features are expected to be released next year.

Seguin ISD Students to Provide Free Tax Assistance to the Public Seguin High School students are offering free tax preparation services to eligible taxpayers through the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assis-
tance (VITA) program. These certified students, enrolled in the district’s Career and Technical Education business pathway, have completed IRS-required training in tax law and available tax credits. Assistance is available for individuals and families earning $67,000 or less annually, persons with disabilities, and limited English-speaking taxpayers. Sessions will take place at the Seguin High School Library on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. through March. To ensure timely tax preparation, attendees should bring photo identification, Social Security or ITIN documents, last year’s tax return, Forms W-2 and 1099, Form 1095-A (if applicable), and proof of bank account details for direct deposit.
