TruLight127, other local charities hosting end-of-year giving campaigns Darren Dunn

(Seguin) -- The end of the year brings with it a number of opportunities for you to make some charitable donations for 2023. Several local and national non-profit groups have been reaching out to the public to encourage folks consider making some additional donations to close out this year. That long list of local charities include organizations like the Christian Cupboard and the Guadalupe Valley Chapter of Habitat for Humanity. That’s a small sample of the organizations seeking these end-ofyear donations.

TruLight123 Ministries is also among the non-profit groups looking for more donations to wrap up 2023.

TruLight provides shelter services at its TruLight Village in Seguin. It also offers foster/adoption services for kids here in this area. Executive Director Sondra Ajasin says they continue to support children in need, and they are also expanding the number of services that they offer.

TOP STORIES for Downtown Seguin 2023 Special by Kyle Kramm, Seguin Main Street & CVB Director

(Seguin) -- There were a lot of accomplishments downtown during 2023. Numerous businesses opened, storefronts were restored, and the vacancy rate continued to decline.

Here is Seguin Main Street’s top happenings for 2023: 5.) Squirrels Taking Over Downtown and Seguin In February 2023, the Seguin Commission on the Arts unveiled its first squirrel, Joy, and officially launched the Seguin Squirrel Trail.

Since then, eight more squirrels have been unveiled with one in Central Park and several others near downtown. The squirrels are adding a fun colorful attraction to the community that is supporting local artists. Several more squirrels will be

popping up around downtown in 2024.

4.) Visitor Center and Main Street Get a New Home In October, the Seguin Visitor Center and Main Street Offices opened at 200 South Austin Street.

The move gave the department more room to grow, to increase Central Park activation, and assist more visitors. Stop in to the Visitor Center to get your Seguin swag.

3.) Growth in Markets 2023 was all about artisan markets as downtown went from two a month to at least eight a month. Funky Monkey and Yellow Rose continued their markets on the second and fourth Saturdays

respectively. Then over 2023 Yellow Rose added a market on the second Sunday of the month. With the help of a Business Improvement Grant, the long vacant covered awning at 414 North Austin Street became the weekly Austin Street Market.

Finally, the Market Seguin began on the fourth Sunday of the month. All these markets feature small businesses and artisans selling their wares.

2.) Masterplan Adopted In June, City Council officially adopted the Downtown Master Plan.

The plan includes over 50 projects and numerous concepts for the Seguin Main Street Advisory Board and City Council to pursue over the next 10 years.

“By just the generosity of the community, it’s just been amazing. This year has been such a blessing. We were able to expand out here at the TruLight Youth Village. We started out the year being able to serve 35 kids and through the dedication, work and commitment of the community, as well as the team here, we were able to expand that to 10 more beds. I mean, that’s just huge. (It’s) 10 more kids that we can serve. We’ve always had the mindset that quantity is not our goal. We don’t want numbers. But we want to be able to help as many kids as we can with the resources that we’re given. So, being able to jump from 35 to 45 will also enable us to help more of the kids who we are seeing going into CWOP, which is Children Without Placement. That has definitely started to trend downward some, but the fact is that even one kid not having a place to go, is one too many.

And so, we put 10 (additional) beds here to focus on trying to keep kids from even getting to that point,” said Ajasin.

Providing those services is one of the reasons why Ajasin says they are encouraging more end-of-year giving. She says they count on the generosity of the community to make sure that they can meet the needs of the children that the serve.

“This end-of-the-year give really gives us a good foothold to start 2024. We do our best here at TruLight with our foster families, with the activities and events that we do to support them, to the kids who live here at the true light Youth village, to our programs that reach out to kinship and biological families -- we cannot do (any of ) that without finances. I wish that I could say we don’t need the money, and we can just do it all day long. But the truth is, even our programs for the biological family members, those aren’t funded by anybody. Nobody’s stepping in to say, ‘hey,

The Board is already working on accomplishing projects in the plan including the downtown restrooms, improving lighting, and establishing a Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone.

City Under Contract for Wells Fargo

I’ll fund that for a year.’ So, everything that our team does that goes out there is about the kids. It’s about loving on them. And so, this time of the year when we are reaching out saying, ‘hey, we want you guys to consider doing an end of the year give to us,’ it is because we know 2024 is coming.

And just like, God forbid, anything like COVID hit or inflation hit us even harder, we have to prepare for that. We have to be prepared, because what we don’t want is our kids to lose any quality,” said Ajasin.

The end-of-year giving not only helps these charities continue their work during the new year, but it also provides some tax benefit to those who give. To qualify for the 2023 tax deduction, the donation needs to be made by no later than Sunday, December 31.

Ajasin says, much like many other local charities, they have made it easy for people to give. She says you can mail in your donation, or you can give online by going to trulight127.org.

The other two charities that we mentioned in this story, are also offering ways for you to give online. End-of-year giving for Habitat for Humanity can be made at habitatgv. org, and donations to the Christian Cupboard can be made online at christiancupboardofseguin.org.

We highlighted those charities in this story, but that only begins to scratch the service of all of the deserving nonprofit organizations also looking for donations to end 2023.

If there’s a charity that you want to help, you can contact them directly to find out the best way to make your donation, so that they are better prepared for the new year.

In September, the City Council approved entering into a contract to purchase the Wells Fargo building. Recognizing that the building represented an opportunity to ensure the building’s future facilitated the vision the community had just created in the downtown master plan. The possibilities for the block are endless and the City will be working with a consultant

to develop a plan for the building and to assist in the selection of a qualified developer to buy the property from the City.

As 2023 comes to a close, Main Street would like to thank the community for its support of downtown and encourage everyone to come out to see the changes that will be happening in downtown during 2024.

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP Christ Austin

(Boerne) --The Seguin boys dropped a pair of games at the Boerne ISD tournament on Wednesday, falling 66-61 to Laredo United and 78-73 to Gregory-Portland.

Senior John Jackson led the Matadors in scoring in the game against United with 23 points. Sophomore Corey Dailey, who celebrated his 16th birthday on Wednesday, poured in 19 points to pace the Mats in the game with Gregory-Portland.

Seguin will wrap play in the Boerne tourney today. The Mats will have the day off on Friday before they start District 26-5A play at home on Saturday afternoon against Kerrville Tivy. The Matadors and Antlers will tip off at Noon Saturday at Goldie Harris Gym. In more boys tournament action Thursday, (Nixon) -- The Navarro Panthers are down in Nixon to start play in the Nixon-Smiley tournament. ( Johnson City) -- And the Marion Bulldogs are up in the Hill Country competing in the Johnson City tournament.

(Weimer) -- In the Weimar tournament, the Seguin Lady Matadors swept a pair of games.

The Lady Mats took down Bellville 49-40 and blasted Schulenburg 61-27 on Wednesday. Desiree Zuniga had 18 and Presley Rangel dropped in 11 in Seguin’s win over Bellville.

Three Lady Mats scored in double figures in the rout over Schulenburg with Arianna Shular leading the way with 18 points. Rangel had 11 points while Britlyn Walls had 10. The Lady Mats are back at the Weimer tournament on Thursday.

(New Braunfels) -- The Navarro Lady Panthers are in action at New Braunfels Friday morning to take on the Lady Unicorns. Tip-off is set for 11:30 a.m. at New Braunfels High School.

Russell “Rusty” Eric Reininger, age 63 of Seguin, passed through death into eternal life in the early morning of December 27, 2023 after a courageous 7 month battle with cancer.

Rusty was born on May 26, 1960 in Seguin, Texas to Marlene Martha (Felsing) and James Edward Reininger. Rusty grew up here in Seguin where he attended St. James Catholic School and later graduated from Seguin High School in 1978.

He loved telling stories of his childhood roaming the streets of Seguin on his bicycle with Jay Harkins, running wild with the Schreiwer boys in Geronimo, annual sausage and pannas making days, and of course the many family camp outs with all the cousins at Nana and Pampaw’s river lot in New Braunfels. Family meant absolutely everything to Rusty. His freshman year at Seguin High School, he met his lifelong friend, Jaiy Braulick, who has since become as close as family.

After high school, Rusty followed in his Pampaw’s and Uncle Buddy Felsing’s footsteps and went to work at Geronimo Woodworks building custom cabinets. There he became an excellent carpenter and learned skills that have since brought joy and beauty to our entire family. After about 10 years in woodworking, he decided to go to college at Southwest Texas where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in construction technology in 1993.

In 1988, Rusty and Jennifer were introduced in the teller line at Seguin State Bank where Jennifer worked. Their first date was dinner followed by a night of dancing at the Midnight Rodeo. Rusty was an excellent country dancer and mom said they danced perfectly together from their very first dance. Rusty and Jennifer were married on January 11, 1992 at Faith Lutheran Church.

Rusty and Jennifer created a beautiful life together with the girls. In 2004, Rusty and Jennifer bought 8 acres with pine trees just outside of town. With his craftsmanship, he built a house full of custom woodwork for Jennifer and the girls. Rusty had a meticulous attention to detail and he hand selected each piece of trim. Rusty believed in working hard and making everyone around him feel valued and loved. This was a quality that made him a great fit at SpawGlass General Contractors where he worked as

an estimator for the past 17 years.

Rusty enjoyed bowling 9 pin at Zorn Bowling Club, family camping trips with his brother Craig’s family, listening to Americana music on 92.1 FM, trips down to the coast singing along to Pat Green with the girls, trips to the Frio River, making as he called “biiiiig breffasts” for the girls each morning before school, and country music dancing. Rusty was an excellent dancer and when they went dancing as a family, Jennifer, Claire, and Madelyn would fight over who got to dance with Rusty to their favorite songs.

Jennifer and the girls thank Kalei, Stacey, Janie, and Brittany, the kind nurses at GRMC who cared for and helped Rusty feel comfortable from the moment he arrived in the ICU on Christmas Day. They especially thank Hannah McCracken who Rusty called his “hero” because she guided and assisted Rusty and Jennifer as they navigated his cancer battle this year. Even on his last day, he continued to be incredibly moved by the support, prayers and acts of love shown to him.

Rusty is preceded in death by his father.

Survivors include his loving wife of 31 years, Jennifer Reininger; daughters, Claire Reininger and Madelyn Reininger; mother, Marlene Reininger; brother, Craig Reininger and wife Patricia; sister, Donna Holdgraf and husband Gary; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Diana and Ken Rippstein; brother-in-law, Jason Rippstein and wife Cara; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members and many friends.

Visitation will begin on Tuesday, January 2, 2024 at 2 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Seguin, followed by funeral services at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Toby Burk officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Taylor Holdgraf, Travis Rippstein, Mason Reininger, Kuy Rippstein, Tanner Felsing and Tait Reininger. A reception will follow at the Texas Agricultural Education and Heritage Center (Big Red Barn).

Private interment will be held at a later date.

Ruby May “Maidie” Eckols, age 100 of Seguin, Texas, passed away on December 27, 2023. She was born on February 28, 1923, in Elmina, Texas to Helen (Meece) and Jasper William Courtney.

She was a steadfast woman of faith who reflected Christ’s love in her words and deeds.

She was a 1940 graduate of Livingston High School where she was Drum Major and elected All-School Favorite.

She wed Wiley Eugene “Eck” Eckols on May 30, 1942, and they were married 60 years. They raised their 4 children in Houston where Maidie was one of the original employees of Spring Branch Bank, working there for over 20 years and retiring as a Vice President.

In 1981 Maidie and Eck built a home on their acreage in Guadalupe County where they began ranching. They joined Forest Hills Baptist Church where Maidie taught a Ladies Sunday School class.

Maidie enjoyed quilting, gardening, and cooking for her family. She had the gift of hospitality.

Maidie was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her brothers Chyde, James, and Dawson Courtney, and sister Frances Courtney Mosher.

Survivors include daughters, Dana Eckols Riley and husband Robert James Riley of Wharton, Texas, Maidlen Eckols Smoot and husband Bobby Joe Smoot of Splendora, Texas, and Deborah Eckols of Seguin, Texas; son, Wiley Eugene Eckols, Jr., and wife Yturria Eckols of Seguin; grandchildren, Shannon Riley Winn and husband Brian Winn, Kristen Riley Frazier and partner John DeVilbiss, Bobby Joe Smoot, Jr. and wife Amanda, Kelly Smoot, Christopher Wade Smoot and wife Bethany, Wiley Eugene Eckols III and wife Trisha, and Sarah Jo Eckols Scholtz; greatgrandchildren, Abby and Dawson Rollwitz, Kynlie Riley, Maddie Frazier, Garrett and Gracie Eckols, Avery and Olivia Smoot, many other friends and loving family members.

Jakoby

Albert Roy Jakoby, Jr., age 81, of Seguin, passed away on December 21, 2023. Roy was born on August 25, 1942, in Del Rio, Texas to Pearl Augusta (Huth) and Albert Roy Jakoby, Sr. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He later served his country in the United States Air Force and Texas Air National Guard. Roy loved his family, serving at Forest Hills Baptist Church, and the simple life out in the country.

Roy is preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Claudia Jakoby; daughter Cheryl Jakoby; son Duane Jakoby and wife Stephanie; granddaughters Emma Jakoby and Kate Jakoby; brother Rev. Robert Jakoby and wife Rebecca; sister Janie Menn and husband Harvey; numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members, and friends.

Wendy Judith Parker, age 55 of Seguin passed away on Tuesday, November 14, 2023. Wendy was born in Rochester, New York to Maureen Babachicos and Ronald E. Corron. Wendy was an amazing soul who was cherished by so many. If you met Wendy, you loved Wendy. Wendy had a way of making strangers feel like they’d known her for their entire life. She lit up every room with her smile and warm spirit. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved music, movies, and anything that included her loving

and determination. She left Boeing in 2015 to become the Sr. Corporate Communications Manager for the Public Affairs Division at Zachry Construction in San Antonio, Texas.

Wendy was preceded in death by her father.

Wendy met her soulmate, Steve Parker, and they had a magical love affair for the last 15 years. Survivors include her loving husband; her sons Hayden Starr of San Antonio Texas, Gage Parker of Lubbock Texas; daughters Hannah Locklear of Tacoma, Washington and Madison Parker of Austin, Texas. Wendy was also Gigi to two grandsons Julian and Deacon Starr. She is also survived by her Mother Maureen Corron and Maureen’s companion Jim Bordelon, her brother Ryan Corron and his companion Vickie Hester, her sister Catherine Carter and husband Pat Carter, and her daughter-in-law Tori Starr. She had some of the best girlfriends who were always there for her as she was for them.

A Celebration of Life Service for Wendy will be held on January 7, 2024, at the Seguin Events Complex (Coliseum) from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. with remarks given at 3 p.m. by the Rev. Chris Larson, the Rev. Rita L. Salas, beloved daughter, sister, teacher, and friend, passed away December 25, 2023, in San Antonio, TX. She was born on October 21, 1959, in her hometown of Seguin, TX. Rita’s passing is mourned by her loving family and cherished friends.

Growing up in Seguin, Rita graduated from Seguin High School. Her thirst for knowledge led her to pursue higher education at Southwest Texas University, where she graduated in 1999 with a Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. Rita’s dedication to learning and personal growth was evident throughout her life as she continued to engage in various career pursuits.

Rita’s professional journey was decorated with compassion and commitment. She spent many years working at Dairy Queen before transitioning to become a dedicated special education aide at Seguin ISD. Inspired by her impactful role as an aide, Rita went on to become a teacher within the school district. Her unwavering dedication extended beyond Seguin ISD to the San Marcos Treatment Center, where she continued her work as a teacher.

As accomplished as she was professionally, Rita’s true treasure lay in her family connections. She found immense joy in spending time with her loved ones, especially her nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Rita’s love for family knew no bounds - she wholeheartedly celebrated every occasion alongside them. Christmas held a special place in her heart; she dedicated months preparing for the festivities that adorned the holiday season. With gifts thoughtfully bought and an array of dishes eagerly anticipated, Rita made Christmas magical for everyone who had the pleasure of sharing it with her.

Rita’s outgoing personality radiated warmth and inspired all who had the privilege of knowing her. Throughout her life, she confronted numerous health challenges with unparalleled bravery and optimism. Undeterred by any obstacle that came her way, Rita faced adversity with unwavering faith in God,

she reminded us that her strength and help came only from Him. Her positive attitude and resilient spirit served as a reminder to us all that strength can be found even in the darkest of times.

Rita’s circle of friends extended far and wide, a testament to her remarkable ability to connect with others. She effortlessly made friends wherever she went, leaving an everlasting impression on each person she encountered. Her genuine interest in people’s lives was evident as she consistently stayed in touch with old and new friends alike. Rita found great joy in hearing about the events and milestones in their lives, offering unwavering support and love through every conversation.

Rita’s passing leaves behind a void that can never be filled. However, her memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her. As we gather to honor her life, a visitation will be held on January 2, 2024 at Palmer Mortuary from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. A funeral service will immediately follow the visitation from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Let us come together to celebrate the life of this exceptional woman.

She was preceded in death by her father Andres Salas, as well as her grandparents Francisco and Seferina Salas, and Tomas and Dominga Leos.

In honor of Rita’s remarkable life, let us carry forward the lessons she taught us: to face challenges with unwavering faith, to cherish our loved ones at every opportunity, and to spread kindness wherever we go. Rita may have departed this earthly realm, but her impact will remain etched in our hearts forever. Rest in peace, dear Rita, knowing that your light will continue to shine brightly through the memories we hold dear.

Fresh out of high school, her unique story started in the mailroom at the Boeing Company where she went on to become Communications Manager in Houston for the Space Division and in San Antonio for the Military Aircraft Division.

He was preceded in death by his father, George Z. Hardwick, his mother, Rose M. Harrell, and his sister, Cathy Denise McAhon.

George is survived by his devoted wife, Jeanelle Hardwick, and their three sons: George VanValkenburg, Leif Hardwick (Amanda), and Jason Hardwick. He is also survived by two cherished grandchildren, Elizabeth VanValkenburg and Trenton Hardwick. Additionally, he is survived by his sister, Arlene Cline.

George was a proud Vietnam veteran, having served his country with honor and dedication. His commitment to duty was reflected in his military service and how he approached life.

In his spare time, George pursued his passions with enthusiasm. He found solace and excitement in the ocean’s depths through scuba diving as he had a special connection with anything on the water, and his adventurous spirit made every moment on the waves memorable. Additionally, he embraced the thrill of racing and took to the skies with a love for radio-controlled planes.

His presence will be missed, but his spirit will live on in the memories we shared and the love he leaves behind.

Josiah Aiden Hernandez, age 13, of Seguin, Texas, passed away on December 22, 2023. He was born on May 1, 2010 in Seguin, Texas to Rebekah Serna Hernandez and Arturo Hernandez. Josiah was an 8th grader at Navarro Jr. High School. He enjoyed playing football and running track.

With his outgoing personality and never meeting a stranger, Josiah felt everyone he came in contact with was his best friend.

Virus Inflames Heart’s Blood Supply (San Antonio, TX) -- A new study is suggesting a direct link between COVID infections and heart attacks. Baylor infectious disease expert Dr. Peter Hotez says this is different from the arrhythmias that have widely been reported. Research is now showing that the virus is able to infect the blood supply to the heart. It was conducted at the NYU School of Medicine and found the risk goes up among those with pre-existing conditions, including those who’ve had a previous heart attack. Dr. Hotez says the virus infiltrates coronary arteries, causing inflammation.

Six Counties In CA Are seeing A COVID Spike (Sacramento, CA) -- COVID is on the rise in California and six counties are taking the brunt of it. Based on new information of COVID-19 hospital admissions per 100-thousand, the counties having it the worst are Sacramento, Yolo, Placer, El Dorado, Mono and Inyo. According to the Sacramento Bee four of the counties have had two-hundred-forty-six new coronavirus-related hospitalizations. The majority of the Golden State remains in low levels which means less than ten percent of the residents have been hospitalized due to COVID-19.

Americans Not So Concerned With Returning To The Gym In 2024 (New York, NY) -- Many Americans aren’t so concerned with going to the gym in the New Year. According to a survey conducted by Stop & Shop, Health Living Director Allison Delaney says 39-percent of respondents say they want to reduce stress in 2024 while 27-percent say they want to head back to the gym. The number one resolution is eating healthy with 58-percent of people saying they plan to change what’s on their plates. Even though 51-percent of respondents say they plan to ring in the New Year with champagne, 46-percent said they plan on taking part in Dry January and giving up alcohol for at least the month.

NYC Unveils Top Baby Names (New York, NY) -- The top baby names in New York City are being revealed. Liam took the top boys’ name, maintaining its number one spot on the list since 2016. Meantime, Emma is once again at the top of the list of girls’ names, a position it has held since 2017. Rounding out the top five girls’ names are Mia, Olivia, Sophia, and Leah while the top boys’ names are Noah, Ethan, Lucas, and David. The New York City Health Department compiled the list with the most recent data from 2022, which revealed nearly 100-thousand babies were born across the five boroughs last year.
