Texas’ Annual Employment Growth Continues to Outpace the Nation (Austin) -- Job growth in Texas continues to be strong in 2023. According to the latest data from the Texas Workforce Commission, the state’s labor market achieved a new record high as the state’s seasonally adjusted job count reached 14,094,900, which is an increase of 26,800 positions over the month of November.

The report states that the Lone Star State’s employment data set new record high levels in each of the last 26 months and added 407,100 positions since November 2022, ranking No. 1 in the nation in over the year increase of seasonally adjusted nonfarm jobs. Texas’ employment growth rate continued to outperform with 3.0 percent annual growth from November 2022 to November 2023—outpacing the nation’s more modest 1.8 percent.

The Texas seasonally adjusted civilian labor force grew over the month by 30,800 people to reach 15,192,900 in November.

(San Antonio) -- Family members may mean well, but there are always a few Christmas gifts that miss the mark. When that happens, what should you do?

Etiquette expert Diane Gottsman, who heads up the Protocol School of Texas, says you should think twice before tossing those gifts in the trash.

“If you have received something from a close family member or friend, we (just) take one for the team,” said Gottsman.

Gottsman says you may not love the gift, but you do care about the person that gave it to you. That means you should find a way to keep it around.

“When grandma asks you, ‘what about that beautiful porcelain ashtray that I gave you’ -- you can pull it out and just put candy in it,” said Gottsman.

Gottsman says keeping a gift that you don’t love is often a small price to pay when it comes to protecting the feelings of loved ones. She says

there’s a real risk that you could unintentionally hurt someone close to you, because you returned or got rid of a gift.

“You may not love it, but it means something. It’s gesture and the effort (that counts). So keep it,” said Gottsman.

Gottsman says there are rules for re-gifting, too. It’s okay to give away an unwanted gift. But, she says, don’t try to pass it off as late present.

Tell the recipient why you think they would love it more than you do.

Popular weight-loss medications not for everybody (San Antonio) -- Christmas is over and that means it’s time to start thinking about those New Year’s Resolutions. Weight loss is a popular one, and it comes at a time when prescriptions for a popular medicine called Ozempic are going through the roof.

“They do go to your brain and they tell your brain -- ‘okay, I’m not that hungry (and) I don’t need to be eating this much.’ So, it suppresses your appetite. It also will go to your stomach and it will slow down they way your stomach processes the food,” said Dr. Maria EscobarVasco at the University of Texas Health System in San Antonio.

She says the drugs are not for everybody. The medication is meant for people who are dangerously obese, not those who want to look good in a swimsuit.

The recent popularity of drugs, like Ozempic, has come with challenges. It’s also used by diabetics, and has become harder for them to get.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate held at 4.1 percent.

Statewide, eight of 11 major industries in Texas expanded over

the month. Professional and Business Services saw significant growth with 9,900 jobs added while the Construction industry gained 9,200 jobs in November. Another 5,100 positions were added in Private Education and Health Services.

Furthermore, six of the 11 major industries set new employment highs in November, including Construction, Financial Activities, Professional and Business Services, Private Education and Health Services, Leisure and Hospitality, and Government.

The Midland Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) maintained the lowest unemployment rate among Texas MSAs with a not seasonally adjusted rate of 2.2 percent in November, followed by the Amarillo MSA at 2.6 percent, and College Station-Bryan at 2.7 percent. The jobless rate for the San Antonio-New Braunfels area is 3.2 percent.

Texans Claim Safety Kareem Jackson

(Houston, TX) -- The Texans are bringing back a familiar face.

Houston claimed safety Kareem Jackson on Tuesday after he was released by the Denver Broncos on Monday. Jackson rejoins the Texans after playing for the team from 2010 to 2018. The 35-yearold safety has been suspended twice this season for repeated violations of unnecessary roughness rules. That has limited Jackson to eight games as he’s racked up 51 tackles and two interceptions this season. The Texans will host the Tennessee Titans on Sunday afternoon at NRG Stadium.

Mavericks Host Cavaliers Rockets, who combined to shoot

(Dallas, TX) -- The Mavericks are squaring off with Donovan Mitchell and the Cavaliers. Dallas hosts Cleveland tonight at the American Airlines Center. The Mavs come off a 128-114 win over the Phoenix Suns and improved to 18-and-12 on the season. Luka Doncic poured in 50 points and had 15 assists in the victory. Doncic is listed questionable for tonight’s game, while Kyrie Irving, Josh Green and Maxi Kleber were all ruled out.

Rockets Lose To Pacers

(Houston, TX) -The Rockets had a two-game winning streak snapped. Houston lost to the Indiana Pacers 123-117 at the Toyota Center. Alperen Sengun led the way with 30 points and 16 rebounds in the losing effort. Fred VanVleet scored 18 points for the

A beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, Woodrow “Woody” Talley, passed away on Wednesday, December 13, 2023 in Seguin, Texas at the age of 57. Woody was born on September 30, 1966 in Seguin to Francis M. (Mills) and Glenn M. Talley.

Woody was happiest when he was on the water fishing, sitting on the beach taking in the warm Gulf breeze, or just riding through the hill country on his old Harley, but Woody also had an incredibly creative and artistic side. He loved to cook and share his dishes with friends and family as well as spend hours building and crafting beautifully detailed works of art from mediums including scale modeling, woodworking, wood-burning and painting that he’d gift to those he loved.

Woody was a private man who kept his circle small, close and safe; and he enjoyed the peace of living a simple life. Woody wasn’t much for small talk, but he was wise beyond his years and was always willing to help

anyone - anytime. He was everyone’s go-to guy for help and he’d always find a way, figure it out, draw up some plans and make it happen. While Woody’s passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, we take comfort in the memories and love we all shared. Russell “Rusty” Eric Reininger, age 63 of Seguin, passed away on December 27, 2023. Rusty was born on May 26, 1960 in Seguin, Texas to Marlene Martha (Felsing) and James Edward Reininger.

Jakoby

Albert Roy Jakoby, Jr., age 81, of Seguin, passed away on December 21, 2023. Roy was born on August 25, 1942, in Del Rio, Texas to Pearl Augusta (Huth) and Albert Roy Jakoby, Sr. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He later served his country in the United States Air Force and Texas Air National Guard. Roy loved his family, serving at Forest Hills Baptist Church, and the simple life out in the country.

Roy is preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Claudia Jakoby; daughter Cheryl Jakoby; son Duane Jakoby and wife Stephanie; granddaughters Emma Jakoby and Kate Jakoby; brother Rev. In Loving Memory of George Hardwick George Hardwick, born on August 17, 1954, left this world on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of courage and a life well-lived.

He was preceded in death by his father, George Z. Hardwick, his mother, Rose M. Harrell, and his sister, Cathy Denise McAhon.

George is survived by his devoted wife, Jeanelle Hardwick, and their three sons: George VanValkenburg, Leif Hardwick (Amanda), and Jason Hardwick. He is also survived by two cherished grandchildren, Elizabeth VanValkenburg and Trenton Hardwick. Additionally, he is survived by his sister, Arlene Cline.

George was a proud Vietnam veteran, having served his country with honor and dedication. His commitment to duty was reflected in his military service and how he approached life.

In his spare time, George pursued his passions with enthusiasm. He found solace and excitement in the ocean’s depths through scuba diving as he had a special connection with anything on the water, and his adventurous spirit made every moment on the waves memorable. Additionally, he embraced the thrill of racing and took to the skies with a love for radio-controlled planes.

His presence will be missed, but his spirit will live on in the memories we shared and the love he leaves behind.

Texas Medical Board Still Mum On Exceptions To State Abortion Ban (Austin, TX) -- The Texas Medical Board so far isn’t acting on the state Supreme Court’s request to offer doctors some clarity about the state’s abortion ban. The court asked the board for guidance last week after rejecting a woman’s bid to end a nonviable pregnancy. The medical board can revoke a doctor’s medical license over violations of the abortion ban. The law provides for medical exceptions, but doctors and advocates say they need clarification. The chairman of the board says they’re unlikely to intervene while other court cases are still in progress.

COVID Inflames Heart’s Blood Supply (San Antonio, TX) -- A new study is suggesting a direct link between COVID infections and heart attacks. Baylor infectious disease expert Dr. Peter Hotez says this is different from the arrhythmias that have widely been reported. Research is now showing that the virus is able to infect the blood supply to the heart. It was conducted at the NYU School of Medicine and found the risk goes up among those with pre-existing conditions, including those who’ve had a previous heart attack. Dr. Hotez says the virus infiltrates coronary arteries, causing inflammation.

Holiday Season Can Boost Stress Levels (Undated) -- Christmas may be over but it still may have taken a toll on your mental health. Experts say that often comes from placing expectations on yourself to do everything, leading many to feel overwhelmed. According to the American Psychological Association, nearly 90 percent of people surveyed said they felt stressed out during the holidays.

Study Identifies Issues To Tackle To Prevent Young Dementia (Washington, DC) -- A new study is recommending the issues you should tackle to prevent young-onset dementia. The condition can begin as early as age 30, and a 2021 study estimated nearly four-million people globally between 30 and 64 have the condition. Key risk factors include being socially isolated, having low vitamin D levels, and living with hearing loss. The analysis, published in the journal JAMA Neurology, also found a lot of similarities between late-onset and early-onset dementia, with other risks including alcohol abuse, heart disease, diabetes, and depression.
