(Seguin) – Seguin Police Chief Jason Brady is giving Blue Santa and all of his elves a round of applause for delivering another dose of holiday happiness.

With most gift packages already under local Christmas trees, Brady says this year’s program has assisted hundreds

and hundreds of children from across Guadalupe County.

“We are in the neighborhood of 1,300 individuals so just a tremendous program. If it weren’t for this program, there are certainly some kids who just flat out would not receive anything to open on Christmas,” said Brady.

Brady says relying on the program the most are parents who even after planning, just need an extra hand.

KWED News Director Cindy Aguirre-Herrera will again host the radio segment -- announcing this year's winner plus the person nominating the individual or family. As part of the letter writing contest, the Christmas Angel requested that the letter be shared live on the air.

For the winner, this will be the first time that they along with the rest of our KWED listeners will get to hear what the person nominating them had to say. All month long, KWED has been collecting letters from anyone in Guadalupe County. The KWED Christmas Angel Contest is an annual effort to illustrate the true meaning of Christmas.

The first of their Kind: TLU celebrates first MBA, DEMSN Graduates Special by Tracy Donley

(Seguin) -- Firsts are always worth celebrating— never more so than this December, when two new types of graduates were among those who crossed the commencement stage.

The University’s Direct Entry Master of Science in Nursing (DEMSN) program, under the direction of New Braunfels Campus Executive and Assistant Director of Nursing Amy Hart and Director of Nursing Dr. Ruth Eby, sent 23 graduates out into the field—the first cohort to complete the program. Every one of them has already taken and passed his or her board exams to become registered nurses, and all of them are already practicing professionally.

“This is a new concept in our nation,” according to Hart—the idea of earning an accelerated master’s degree in nursing with only one additional semester tacked onto the bachelor-level nursing degree, so that both degrees are attained in twenty months’ time. In Texas, TLU was the second university to offer such an option, right behind the University of Texas at Austin. TLU’s second cohort in the program is already well underway, and a third will launch this January. “We have 35 signed up and we have a waitlist,” Hart says, with Eby adding that, “students are coming from across all time zones,” and the hope is that this program will soon expand to accept new batches of students twice a year rather than just once.

Prospective DEMSN students should know that they’ll need to complete their prerequisite coursework before entering the program, and that it “takes rigor and discipline” to get through it, but they aren’t required to have a background in healthcare to be accepted. The program is designed for students who hold a bachelor’s degree in any academic major and would like to become nurses—and in the end, it’s worth the work, as graduates are highly sought-after for internships, externships, and employment opportunities.

Kayla Dippel entered the program having already earned her BS in human development and family studies from Texas Tech University. A mere twenty months later, she’d obtained both her BSN and her MSN through the DEMSN program. “To be honest, when it comes to accelerated nursing programs, a lot of them are online with some clinical hours. But at TLU not only was it in person, I also had the opportunity to receive over 950 clinical and lab hours.”

Students gain experience in a wide range of settings, including mental health centers, hospice centers, operating rooms, PACU, emergency rooms, labor and delivery, post-partum, children’s hospitals, and critical care units in neurology, cardiac, lung, and burn to name a few. Graduates, pg. 3

They will still have gifts, but they’d probably have to sacrifice in other areas that would be quite painful for them particularly with this inflation we are seeing with the cost of food and the cost of fuel, so it puts a lot of parents in a really precarious position trying to make sure the kids have some gifts. So that’s always heartening to see,” said Brady.

Brady says the Blue Santa Program wouldn’t be successful without the community’s support. He says Seguin demonstrates this Christmas spirit year after year.

“I was able to drop by and on several occasions, the volunteers that we had from the community that not only gave money and gave gifts but also people who gave their time to come in and wrap gifts. It’s heartening. It’s really a community effort and we are glad we can sort of shepherd that process and lead it,” said Brady.

While there is a network of officers and a host of volunteers who help make this program a success, Brady says it’s always special when he can personally thank Sarah Chilutti, the community engagement officer assigned with getting the job done.

“Sarah is absolutely instrumental in that role because lots of people are always willing to help in this community but somebody kind of has to spearhead things and she does that I think better than anyone else could.

It was because of this broad range of experience that Dippel found her passion in labor and delivery—and landed her current job. “I graduated on a Saturday and started orientation the following Monday! I am so incredibly grateful for all of the support and knowledge I received at TLU that got me to my dream job.”

Dippel says that the DEMSN program is challenging, but that it “shaped me into the nurse I am today and will become in the future. I wouldn’t be on the other side if it weren’t for all of the amazing and intelligent educators that pushed me toward the finish line every step of the way. Each encouraged me to work my hardest and do my best, and for that I am incredibly grateful.”

Meanwhile, the first cohort of MBA graduates also received their master’s hoods and diplomas this December.

MBA Director and Associate Professor of Business Mark Peacock says that an accelerated online MBA program is brand new to TLU. “We’re excited to watch this grow,” he says of the program, and even as the first cohort graduated this year, the second was already underway, with the goal being to offer two launch dates per year.

What sets TLU’s MBA program apart from others like it? “Personalized attention,” says Peacock. Professors know their students by name and take an interest in their goals and careers. And even though the program is entirely virtual, the relational aspect that is the hallmark of a TLU education is still very much in play. “We do it through discussion forums, group projects, some live meetings with faculty, and occasional meetups, which help students feel connected to their professors and to one another.”

We are very proud of her and her effort,” said Brady.

The Seguin Police Department’s Blue Santa Program this year also gives special thanks to the former owners of The Backyard. They include Freddie and Denise Leos.

The owners donated $10,000 to the program following their hosting of the Spazmatics concert in November.

The concert was the company’s final community contribution as it plans to sell the property at the end of the year.

The two academic themes that run through the program are business analytics—the crucial ability to tell a story with data—and change management. “Coming out of Covid, we had to learn to manage change in new ways to a degree that we never imagined,” says Peacock.

Graduates of TLU’s MBA program are well-versed in this vital skill.

Igneris López Ríos, who just earned her MBA, works full-time and is a busy mother of two. “TLU's MBA program provides the flexibility I need to reach my career goals. The MBA faculty at TLU are very supportive and always willing to help students succeed.”

Another December graduate, Robert Harrison, pointed out that MBA students are given the opportunity to “take lessons learned in class and apply them to realworld scenarios and real-world workplaces.” He adds that group projects such as building a full-fledged marketing plan for a local business were especially valuable.

With eight-week semesters with breaks in between, the program is rigorous, “but we have it structured to reflect a rhythm that allows people to maintain their lives,” Peacock says. Prospective students can be accepted into the program from any educational background as long as they complete the necessary prerequisites, which can be obtained by taking relatively short online modules, equipping them to step into the program with the needed level of understanding. Taken on a full-time basis, the master’s degree can be earned in only twelve months.

Both the MBA and DEMSN programs combine academic rigor with personalized attention—and the sense of connectivity between students and professors that is, as Hart puts it, “a reflection of the legacy of TLU.”

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran football had three student-athletes make the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Football Teams announced in a release Tuesday.

Mason Hardy (Flynn/Normangee), Grayson Kowalski (Sabinal/Sabinal), and Tristan Smith (New Braunfels/Canyon) represented TLU on the NCAA Division-III team.

In order to be nominated, each student-athlete must have at least a 3.5 grade point average or higher, and participated in at least 90 percent of the institution’s games or start in at least 66 percent of games.

The 2023 Academic All-District® Football teams, selected by College Sports Communicators (CSC), recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field

and in the classroom. The CSC Academic AllAmerica® program separately recognizes football honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and NAIA. Hardy earns his second Academic AllDistrict honor after earning All-ASC honors for his performance on the field in 2023. Hardy finished third on the Bulldogs with 35 tackles while adding an interception. Hardy would also earn a spot on the ASC’s Outstanding Sportsman Team of the Year.

Kowalski appeared in all ten games along the TLU defensive line recording 24 tackles, four sacks, five tackles for loss and returning a recovered fumble for a touchdown against Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Kowalski had a career-high

two sacks against Austin College.

Smith had a breakout season for the Bulldogs in his first season with significant playing time, joining Hardy on the All-ASC Third Team. Smith led the Bulldogs with 53 tackles, ranking 13th in the ASC. The All-District honors are the first for Kowalski and Smith. The CSC Academic AllDistrict Teams can be viewed in full here.

John David ( JD) Kiefer III, age 35 of Kerrville and formerly of Seguin, passed away on December 18, 2023. JD was born on November 18, 1988, in San Antonio, Texas to Angie (Anderson) and John David Kiefer, II. JD was a 2007 graduate of Lifegate Christian School in Seguin. He then attended Schreiner University in Kerrville where he graduated with two degrees, one in communication and one in graphic design. He worked for the past 10 years as a production artist for James Avery Artisan Jewelry in their corporate office.

JD is preceded in death by his father.

He is survived by his parents, Angie and Carlos Hernandez; his sister Kaitlin Hernandez; grandmothers, JoAnne Molina and Wanda Schaffer; grandfather John David Kiefer, Sr.; his beloved fur babies, Stella and Luci, and the cat Ronald; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, other loving family members and many friends.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 21, 2023, at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel.

Jaime ( James) Medrano Ramos, beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend, and devoted member of his community, passed away on December 14th, 2023, at the age of 55. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and kindness that touched the lives of all who knew him.

Born on January 7th, 1968, in San Antonio, Texas to Raynol and Dolores Ramos, Jaime grew up surrounded by a tight-knit family. He cherished his humble upbringing and was proud of his

small town, Seguin.

In 1987, he graduated from Seguin High School. Jaime was proud to be a Matador! He went on to earn an HVAC certification from St. Phillips College in 2009.

Throughout his career, Jaime worked in various fields including industrial and metal fabrication. However, it was his tenure of over 15 years at SMCISD HVAC Maintenance that brought him immense fulfillment.

An astute family man, Jaime found solace and joy in the presence of his loved ones. He treasured his role as a father and grandfather above all else. The beaming smile on his face whenever he spoke about his children and grandchildren was infectious. His granddaughters held a particularly special place in his heart. Their laughter echoed through his memories.

With a love for the outdoors coursing through his veins, Jaime often sought refuge along the calm shores of the San Marcos River. Nature provided him with much-needed solace and rejuvenation in moments of introspection. A true culinary artist, he seamlessly combined his passion for cooking and his love for others. It was not uncommon to find Jaime inviting everyone around to taste-test his latest culinary creation, always accompanied by a heartfelt smile.

Jaime’s vivacious personality and warm spirit made him the life of any party. His thoughtfulness, kindness, and generosity endeared him to all who crossed his path. His infectious sense of humor brought laughter wherever he went. There was never a dull moment in Jaime’s presence as he effortlessly lit up a room. A true testament to his character was his eagerness to lead prayers before meals, infusing each gathering with a sense of gratitude and reflection.

Jaime’s peers often marveled at his culinary prowess, but it was his selfless and caring nature that truly defined him as a friend. He had an innate ability to uplift those around him with genuine compliments and unwavering support. To know Jaime was to experience unwavering friendship and unwavering kindness.

On December 21st, 2023, at 10:00 AM, a Mass will be held in honor of Jaime’s life at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Seguin, Texas.

Thereafter, a solemn interment ceremony will take place at San Geronimo Cemetery on W Walnut St in Seguin, Texas at 11:15 AM. Jaime’s proudest accomplishments were rooted in his deep devotion to his faith. He was an active member of the Seguin ACTS community and served on the St. James Life Teen team for many years. In addition, Jaime and his beloved wife Elaine were members of the LOVESTRONG marriage ministry team at Saints Peter and Paul church in New Braunfels.

In addition to his loving wife Elaine, Jaime is survived by his sons Johnathan Sealey, Christian Ramos, and James Sealey Ramos Jr. (spouse: Tiara Bruns), his daughter Gabriella Ramos (spouse: Caleb Rios), and his cherished granddaughters Sophia Rodriguez, Alayah Rae Ramos, Brooklyn Rios, and Braelynn Rios. His brothers Demetrio “Lee” Lomas (deceased), Adam Lomas, Manuel Leos, Raynol Ramos Jr., and Fernando Medrano will forever carry Jaime’s memory in their hearts. Jaime was fortunate to have a circle of close friends who became family along the way.

James ( Jamie) Allen and Wade Carter held a special place in his heart. The Sealey family embraced him as one of their own flesh and blood. His close cousins Gilbert Garza and Rene Rodriguez shared countless memories with him, alongside numerous other cousins who will remember him fondly.

The impact of Jaime’s life extended far beyond blood relations and immediate circles. His SCC brothers in Christ, Grapevine Fellowship family, ACTS family, Life Teen family, LOVESTRONG family, SMCISD family, and numerous other friends, family, and acquaintances were touched by his unwavering spirit.

As we bid farewell to our dear Jaime Medrano Ramos, let us carry forward the love he so generously shared with all those who had the privilege of knowing him. Though he may no longer be physically present amongst us, his spirit will forever guide us through life’s triumphs and challenges.

A beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, Woodrow “Woody” Talley, passed away on Wednesday, December 13, 2023 in Seguin, Texas at the age of 57.

Woody was born on September 30, 1966 in Seguin to Francis M. (Mills) and Glenn M. Talley.

Woody was happiest when he was on the water fishing, sitting on the beach taking in the warm Gulf breeze, or just riding through the hill country on his old Harley, but Woody also had an incredibly creative and artistic side. He loved to cook and share his dishes with friends and family as well as spend hours building and crafting beautifully detailed works of art from mediums including scale modeling, woodworking, wood-burning and painting that he’d gift to those he loved.

Woody was a private man who kept his circle small, close and safe; and he enjoyed the peace of living a simple life. Woody wasn’t much for small talk, but he was wise beyond his years and was always willing to help anyone - anytime. He was everyone’s go-to guy for help and he’d always find

a way, figure it out, draw up some plans and make it happen. While Woody’s passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, we take comfort in the memories and love we all shared. He knew Christ as his savior and though he will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved him, we can take solace in knowing he is now home.

In Loving Memory of George Hardwick George Hardwick, born on August 17, 1954, left this world on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of courage and a life well-lived.

He was preceded in death by his father, George Z. Hardwick, his mother, Rose M. Harrell, and his sister, Cathy Denise McAhon.

George is survived by his devoted wife, Jeanelle Hardwick, and their three sons: George VanValkenburg, Leif Hardwick (Amanda), and Jason Hardwick. He is also survived by two cherished grandchildren, Elizabeth VanValkenburg and Trenton Hardwick. Additionally, he is survived by his sister, Arlene Cline.

George was a proud Vietnam veteran, having served his country with honor and dedication. His commitment to duty was reflected in his military service and how he approached life.

In his spare time, George pursued his passions with enthusiasm. He found solace and excitement in the ocean’s depths through scuba diving as he had a special connection with anything on the water, and his adventurous spirit made every moment on the waves memorable. Additionally, he embraced the thrill of racing and took to the skies with a love for radio-controlled planes.

His presence will be missed, but his spirit will live on in the memories we shared and the love he leaves behind.

New Covid Strain On The Rise This Holiday Season (Undated) -- Officials say a new COVID-19 variant is on the rise this holiday season. The CDC says cases of the new variant, which has been dubbed JN.1, now account for one in five new infections. One official estimated that the new variant will become the dominant strain within a week.

Voluntary Recall Issued For Bagged Spinach (Tallahassee, FL) -- A health warning is impacting Publix customers throughout Florida. A voluntary recall has been issued for Fresh Express and Publix spinach brands due to a potential listeria contamination. The FDA says the Fresh Express product has a “use by” date of December 15th and the other bag has a December 14th expiration date. Both bags have a product code of G-3-3-2. So far, no illnesses have been reported.

Study: Americans Less Satisfied With Parts Of Health Care System (Undated) -- Americans are less satisfied with nearly every major part of the health care system. That’s according to a recent analysis from Gallup, which found that satisfaction has dropped since 2010. Hospitals, drugmakers, and physicians took some of the biggest hits in the survey. Gallup says the souring sentiment can be attributed to factors including COVID-19, the opioid crisis, and rising costs. Views about the quality of health care generally stayed the same or improved between 2003 and 2010, which were the last two times Gallup asked people to rate providers.
