New leadership team named at Seguin Public Library Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- The operation of the Seguin Public Library is officially in new hands. The city of Seguin is celebrating the promotion of two individuals while also recognizing the retirement of longtime Library Director Jacki Gross. Gross recently retired after serving the city facility for nearly 19 years.

On the heels of that retirement, Seguin City Manager Steve Parker announced that two familiar faces at the Seguin Public Library would be

promoted to lead the library’s operations.

The first is Silvia Christy. Christy, who has served as assistant director, has been chosen as the new director of the Seguin Public Library.

Christy continues 24 plus years of experience in the library field.

Christy says she is excited for this opportunity and welcomes the chance to continue the groundwork left behind by Gross. Library, pg. 2

“It was bittersweet, of course, I’ve been working with Jacki for a long time so having her have her last day here was kind of sad but it’s also at the same time very exciting moving forward trying to plan for the community to bring a lot of things for both adults and youth services trying to make sure that we serve the community in the best way that we can – trying to review our technology – making sure we promote literacy just taking the library to the next level. I think we have a good place to start. Jacki set those bases for us. Now, we just have to keep on going and bring more and be sure that we stay on top of serving the community, finding what their needs are and ensuring that we are providing them with the tools they need,” said Christy.

Christy first began her career at the Seguin Public Library as a part-time library clerk. She was then promoted to Library Assistant/Records Management Coordinator in 2002, Reference Librarian/Records Management Officer in 2005 and then as Assistant Director in 2007.

The second promotion was awarded to Hannah

Farmer who now serves as the new Assistant Library Director.

Farmer has spent the past eight years with the Seguin Public Library as the Youth Services Librarian and was promoted to Youth Services Manager in 2021.

Christy says Seguin is also very lucky to have Farmer lead the operations over at the library. She says Farmer has worked hard to establish great partnerships throughout the community.

“She is awesome, and she brings a lot of new ideas and connections with the families that come to our story times and youth programs. She brings a lot of insight as to what the community is looking for for those young young minds.

She has a relationship with some of the homeschooling groups here – connections with the schools and her praise are well known so we hope those connections move with her into her new role,” said Christy.

Farmer is also recognized for having recently been elected as the Secretary/Treasurer of the Texas Library Association Children’s Round Table Executive Committee.

TLU’s Sansano Named to D3hoops.com National

SEGUIN, Texas -- Sophomore guard Lauren Sansano (San Antonio/FEAST) was named to the D3hoops.com National Team of the Week the publication announced Tuesday morning.

This is the first national honor in Sansano’s career. Sansano is the first Bulldog since Cierra Jordan in 2017 to earn the D3hoops.com national honor.

Sansano led Texas Lutheran to a TLU’s first win over Colorado College in Colorado since 2019 on Friday. Sansano finished just two points shy of her career high, scoring 22 points on 66%

shooting and adding three assists. Sansano was responsible for 42 percent of TLU’s points on Friday via her own scoring or assists.

Sansano, who was an All-SCAC Third Team selection a season ago, currently ranks tenth in the SCAC in points per game averaging 11.7 through ten games this season. Sansano also ranks fourth in the SCAC in assists to turnover ratio (1.7).

John David ( JD) Kiefer III, age 35 of Kerrville and formerly of Seguin, passed away on December 18, 2023. JD was born on November 18, 1988, in San Antonio, Texas to Angie (Anderson) and John David Kiefer, II. JD was a 2007 graduate of Lifegate Christian School in Seguin. He then attended Schreiner University in Kerrville where he graduated with two degrees, one in communication and one in graphic design. He worked for the past 10 years as a production artist for James Avery Artisan Jewelry in their corporate office.

JD is preceded in death by his father.

He is survived by his parents, Angie and Carlos Hernandez; his sister Kaitlin Hernandez; grandmothers, JoAnne Molina and Wanda Schaffer; grandfather John David Kiefer, Sr.; his beloved fur babies, Stella and Luci, and the cat Ronald; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, other loving family members and many friends.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 21, 2023, at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, December 22, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Robert K. Odom officiating. Jaime ( James) Medrano Ramos, beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend, and devoted member of his community, passed away on December 14th, 2023, at the age of 55. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and kindness that touched the lives of all who knew him.

Born on January 7th, 1968, in San Antonio, Texas to Raynol and Dolores Ramos, Jaime grew up surrounded by a tight-knit family. He cherished his humble upbringing and was proud of his

small town, Seguin.

In 1987, he graduated from Seguin High School. Jaime was proud to be a Matador! He went on to earn an HVAC certification from St. Phillips College in 2009.

Throughout his career, Jaime worked in various fields including industrial and metal fabrication. However, it was his tenure of over 15 years at SMCISD HVAC Maintenance that brought him immense fulfillment.

An astute family man, Jaime found solace and joy in the presence of his loved ones. He treasured his role as a father and grandfather above all else. The beaming smile on his face whenever he spoke about his children and grandchildren was infectious. His granddaughters held a particularly special place in his heart. Their laughter echoed through his memories.

With a love for the outdoors coursing through his veins, Jaime often sought refuge along the calm shores of the San Marcos River. Nature provided him with much-needed solace and rejuvenation in moments of introspection. A true culinary artist, he seamlessly combined his passion for cooking and his love for others. It was not uncommon to find Jaime inviting everyone around to taste-test his latest culinary creation, always accompanied by a heartfelt smile.

Jaime’s vivacious personality and warm spirit made him the life of any party. His thoughtfulness, kindness, and generosity endeared him to all who crossed his path. His infectious sense of humor brought laughter wherever he went. There was never a dull moment in Jaime’s presence as he effortlessly lit up a room. A true testament to his character was his eagerness to lead prayers before meals, infusing each gathering with a sense of gratitude and reflection.

Jaime’s peers often marveled at his culinary prowess, but it was his selfless and caring nature that truly defined him as a friend. He had an innate ability to uplift those around him with genuine compliments and unwavering support. To know Jaime was to experience unwavering friendship and unwavering kindness.

While Jaime’s passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, we take solace in the memories he left behind. The values he instilled in each person fortunate enough to have known him will continue to ripple through their lives.

The loving memory of Jaime Medrano Ramos will be honored at various services and gatherings. Visitation will take place on December 20th, 2023, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Palmer Mortuary & Cremations in Seguin, Texas. A beautiful prayer service will follow at 7:00 PM on the same day.

On December 21st, 2023, at 10:00 AM, a Mass will be held in honor of Jaime’s life at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Seguin, Texas.

Thereafter, a solemn interment ceremony will take place at San Geronimo Cemetery on W Walnut St in Seguin, Texas at 11:15 AM. Jaime’s proudest accomplishments were rooted in his deep devotion to his faith. He was an active member of the Seguin ACTS community and served on the St. James Life Teen team for many years. In addition, Jaime and his beloved wife Elaine were members of the LOVESTRONG marriage ministry team at Saints Peter and Paul church in New Braunfels.

In addition to his loving wife Elaine, Jaime is survived by his sons Johnathan Sealey, Christian Ramos, and James Sealey Ramos Jr. (spouse: Tiara Bruns), his daughter Gabriella Ramos (spouse: Caleb Rios), and his cherished granddaughters Sophia Rodriguez, Alayah Rae Ramos, Brooklyn Rios, and Braelynn Rios. His brothers Demetrio “Lee” Lomas (deceased), Adam Lomas, Manuel Leos, Raynol Ramos Jr., and Fernando Medrano will forever carry Jaime’s memory in their hearts. Jaime was fortunate to have a circle of close friends who became family along the way.

James ( Jamie) Allen and Wade Carter held a special place in his heart. The Sealey family embraced him as one of their own flesh and blood. His close cousins Gilbert Garza and Rene Rodriguez shared countless memories with him, alongside numerous other cousins who will remember him fondly.

The impact of Jaime’s life extended far beyond blood relations and immediate circles. His SCC brothers in Christ, Grapevine Fellowship family, ACTS family, Life Teen family, LOVESTRONG family, SMCISD family, and numerous other friends, family, and acquaintances were touched by his unwavering spirit.

As we bid farewell to our dear Jaime Medrano Ramos, let us carry forward the love he so generously shared with all those who had the privilege of knowing him. Though he may no longer be physically present amongst us, his spirit will forever guide us through life’s triumphs and challenges.

A beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, Woodrow “Woody” Talley, passed away on Wednesday, December 13, 2023 in Seguin, Texas at the age of 57.

Woody was born on September 30, 1966 in Seguin to Francis M. (Mills) and Glenn M. Talley.

Woody was happiest when he was on the water fishing, sitting on the beach taking in the warm Gulf breeze, or just riding through the hill country on his old Harley, but Woody also had an incredibly creative and artistic side. He loved to cook and share his dishes with friends and family as well as spend hours building and crafting beautifully detailed works of art from mediums including scale modeling, woodworking, wood-burning and painting that he’d gift to those he loved.

Woody was a private man who kept his circle small, close and safe; and he enjoyed the peace of living a simple life. Woody wasn’t much for small talk, but he was wise beyond his years and was always willing to help anyone - anytime. He was everyone’s go-to guy for help and he’d always find

a way, figure it out, draw up some plans and make it happen. While Woody’s passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, we take comfort in the memories and love we all shared. He knew Christ as his savior and though he will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved him, we can take solace in knowing he is now home.

In Loving Memory of George Hardwick George Hardwick, born on August 17, 1954, left this world on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of courage and a life well-lived.

He was preceded in death by his father, George Z. Hardwick, his mother, Rose M. Harrell, and his sister, Cathy Denise McAhon.

George is survived by his devoted wife, Jeanelle Hardwick, and their three sons: George VanValkenburg, Leif Hardwick (Amanda), and Jason Hardwick. He is also survived by two cherished grandchildren, Elizabeth VanValkenburg and Trenton Hardwick. Additionally, he is survived by his sister, Arlene Cline.

George was a proud Vietnam veteran, having served his country with honor and dedication. His commitment to duty was reflected in his military service and how he approached life.

In his spare time, George pursued his passions with enthusiasm. He found solace and excitement in the ocean’s depths through scuba diving as he had a special connection with anything on the water, and his adventurous spirit made every moment on the waves memorable. Additionally, he embraced the thrill of racing and took to the skies with a love for radio-controlled planes.

His presence will be missed, but his spirit will live on in the memories we shared and the love he leaves behind.

CDC Warns Healthcare Providers About Need To Ramp Up Vaccines (Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC is warning healthcare providers about an “urgent need” to ramp up flu, COVID-19 and RSV vaccines. The federal health agency says low vaccination rates and an uptick in respiratory disease activity across the US could lead to a strain on health care capacity. The CDC estimates about 420-percent of children have their flu shot, and for adults that number is at about 41-percent.

Study: Americans Eat “Extra Meal” By Snacking (Columbus, OH) -- A new study says Americans eat an extra meal each day just by snacking. Researchers at The Ohio State University studied data from over 20-thousand individuals and found that Americans consume up to 500 calories daily from snacks alone, which is often more calories than breakfast but with less nutritional value. A senior author of the study said snacks are contributing “a meal’s worth of intake” to our diets without actually being a meal.

Quaker Oats Recalls Granola Bars, Cereal (Chicago, IL) -- Dozens of granola bars and cereal products are being recalled for potential salmonella risk. The Quaker Oats Company issued the recall on Friday, advising consumers who bought the affected products to throw them out. The affected products are listed on the FDA site, but it includes flavors of the Quaker Chewy Bars and puffed granola cereal. The granola and cereal products were sold nationwide. The company says it hasn’t received any confirmed reports of illnesses related to the recall.

UC San Diego Identifying Potential Biomarkers For Suicidal Thoughts (San Diego, CA) -- Research out of the University of California, San Diego has identified potential bio-markers for suicidal thoughts. The new study found people with depression and suicidal thoughts had five detectable compounds in their blood that could help identify those at higher risk. It’s hoped the study can lead to ways to personalize care for mental health and depression issues that impact some 16 million adults in the U.S. And as always, if you or anyone you know is in need of help the national Suicide and Crisis Lifeline can be reached 24 hours a day by calling or texting 988.
