City of Seguin fills three leadership positions Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) – The city of Seguin is announcing and introducing new individuals for three leadership positions.

Those positions include Facilities Director, Assistant Director of Capital Projects and Engineering, and Purchasing Manager.

Hired as the new Facilities Director is Randy Kell. Kell joins the City of Seguin after serving more than 6 years as Construction Manager for the Archdiocese of San Antonio.

Kell earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Technology from Texas A&M-Kingsville. City officials say Kell’s vast experience in commercial construction, residential

construction, civil construction and facility maintenance will greatly benefit the city’s Facilities Department.

Serving as the new Assistant Director of capital projects and engineering is Jennifer Shortess.

Shortess brings more than 14 years of engineering experience to the City of Seguin.

Shortness most recently served as a Civil Engineer at both the City of Schertz and Guadalupe County.

Her experience spans various roles in the public and private sectors, including internships at TxDOT and the Louisiana Transportation Research Center.

Shortess graduated from

Louisiana State University with a degree in Civil Engineering.

A promotion was also in store for Ashley Bruns. Bruns who has served with the City of Seguin since March 2023 as Contract Coordinator/ Buyer, was recently promoted to Purchasing Manager. City officials say she has a diverse background in the private sector, particularly in the vacation rental industry.

Prior to joining the City of Seguin, Bruns spent 7 years working as Business Manager for HorizonVacation Group.

She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from Ventura College in Virginia Beach, VA.

The story of Christmas continues to be remembered. The kids and community volunteers at Faith Lutheran Church were among those who hosted a live nativity scene at this year’s Big Red Barn Country Christmas event. This marked the second year in which the local church partnered up with the Ag center to host the event. Country Christmas is held every second weekend in December.

Bulldogs Take Down Colorado College, 69-66 Bryce Hayes - TLU Sports Information & Sports Marketing

COLORADO COLLEGE, CO -Sophomore point guard Lauren Sansano (San Antonio/FEAST) turned in a season-high 22 points as Texas Lutheran took a 69-66 victory over Colorado College Friday night at Reid Arena. The win marks the first win for the Bulldogs in Colorado since February 2019. The Bulldogs improve to 8-2 (2-1 SCAC) while Colorado College falls to 6-4 (0-1 SCAC).

Junior guard Kailee Mulkey (New Braunfels/ New Braunfels) joined Sansano in double figures with 11 points and finished a rebound shy of a double-double with a team-high nine rebounds.

After a delay to the men’s game pushed the start time of the women’s game back nearly an hour, both teams came out cold with neither team shooting above 25 percent as the Bulldogs took a 10-9 lead after the opening period. Sansano and Sarahi Jones (Los Fresnos/Los Fresnos) combined for all ten of the Bulldogs points in the quarter.

The two teams shook their early struggles in the second quarter. The two teams would go back and forth exchanging seven lead changes in the quarter with the Tigers outscoring the Bulldogs 11-7 down the stretch to take a 34-30 lead into the break. Sansano would add eight more points while Madison Malone (Boling/Boling) would add six points in five minutes of action in the quarter.

After leaning heavily on Sansano in the first half, the Bulldogs started to wake up in the second half. The Tigers controlled the third quarter and despite their best efforts that saw them shoot just under 60 percent from the field, the Bulldogs kept it close entering the fourth quarter.

Trailing by six points with seven minutes remaining, the Bulldogs slowly chipped away before a Kailey Lacy (Pflugerville/ Hendrickson) three-pointer gave the Bulldogs a one point lead with 2:52 remaining. The two teams would trade one point advantages

before a Lauren Sansano layup with 27 seconds remaining in addition to a pair of free throws with nine seconds remaining would give Texas Lutheran the decisive 69-66 lead. The Bulldogs would force the Tigers into a contested three as time expired to seal the road win.

The road tests continue for the Texas Lutheran women’s basketball team as they travel to San Antonio to face NCAA Division-I opponent, Incarnate Word, on Wednesday, December 20.

Israel Romo Lara, Jr., age 41 of New Braunfels, passed away on December 13, 2023. Israel was born on October 15, 1982, in New Braunfels, Texas to Minerva Viola Urquiza Lara Medina and Israel Romo Lara, Sr. Israel is preceded in death by his father, Israel Romo Lara, Sr., grandmothers, Frances Urquiza and Rosa Romo Lara, and aunt Norma Lara.

Survivors include his children, twins, Israel Romo Lara, III and Mercedes Lara and Kaidon Xavior Alegria; mother Minerva Lara Medina and partner Daniel Ochoa; siblings, Abel Acuna, Sr. and wife Elizabeth Castellanos, Rita Acuna Lagunas and husband Bryan, Natalie Lara Ibarra and husband Juan, Monica Luna, Linnet Lara, and Israel Pena Lara; grandfather, Moses C. In Loving Memory of George Hardwick George Hardwick, born on August 17, 1954, left this world on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of courage and a life well-lived.

He was preceded in death by his father, George Z. Hardwick, his mother, Rose M. Harrell, and his sister, Cathy Denise McAhon.

George is survived by his devoted wife, Jeanelle Hardwick, and their three sons: George VanValkenburg, Leif Hardwick (Amanda), and Jason Hardwick. He is also survived by two cherished grandchildren, Elizabeth VanValkenburg and Trenton Hardwick. Additionally, he is survived by his sister, Arlene Cline.

George was a proud Vietnam veteran, having served his country with honor and dedication. His commitment to duty was reflected in his military service and how he approached life.

In his spare time, George pursued his passions with enthusiasm. He found solace and excitement in the ocean’s depths through scuba diving as he had a special connection with anything on the water, and his adventurous spirit made every moment on the waves memorable. Additionally, he embraced the thrill of racing and took to the skies with a love for radio-controlled planes.

His presence will be missed, but his spirit will live on in the memories we shared and the love he leaves behind.

Poison Control Centers Receive Sharp Increase In Semaglutide Overdoses (Washington, DC) -- Poison control centers are seeing a sharp uptick in calls about weight loss injection overdoses. From January through November of this year, America’s Poison Centers says it received close to three-thousand calls that involve semaglutide. There are currently three semaglutide medications on the market: Ozempic and Rybelsus, which are FDA-approved for Type 2 diabetes, and Wegovy which is approved for weight loss The overdose increase is a more than 15-fold increase since 2019. Some callers needed to be hospitalized for severe stomach issues, but recovered after being given intravenous fluids and anti-nausea medications.

FDA Considers Approving MDMA Therapy For PTSD (Washington, DC) -- The FDA is considering the approval of psychedelic-assisted therapy for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder. If MDMA, also known as Ecstasy, is approved, it would be the first therapy of its kind for PTSD. It’s the culmination of more than 30 years of clinical research, according to the announcement from the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies. The FDA could make the decision as soon as six months from now, or a maximum of ten months.

House Votes To Let Whole Milk Back In School Lunch (Washington, DC) -- Whole milk could soon be headed back to school lunchrooms. House lawmakers on Wednesday overwhelmingly voted for the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act, which would allow the National School Lunch Program to serve whole milk. Whole milk was phased out more than a decade ago as part of a push by then-First Lady Michelle Obama to combat childhood obesity, leaving only low-fat options. The measure now heads to the Senate.

Transgender Sports, Gender-Affirming Healthcare Bill Heading To DeWine’s Desk (Columbus, OH) -- Ohio lawmakers are approving a measure to limit gender-affirming care for minors and ban transgender girls from competing in female athletics. Both the state Senate and House passed an updated version of House Bill 68 yesterday. If signed into law by Republican Governor Mike DeWine, the legislation would bar healthcare providers in Ohio from administering some treatments, such as hormone replacement therapy, to patients under the age of 18. The new transgender sports rules would essentially overturn the current Ohio High School Athletic Association policy that allows trans girls to compete with and against biological females as long as certain criteria to prevent unfair advantages are met.
