Candidate begins campaign for Guadalupe County Sheriff Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Guadalupe County) -Guadalupe County’s emergency management coordinator and fire marshal has officially begun his campaign for Guadalupe County Sheriff. Patrick Pinder will be seeking the Republican nomination for Guadalupe County Sheriff during the March 2024 Primary.

Pinder looks to replace longtime lawman Arnold Zwicke who in November announced his decision to not seek re-election.

Pinder has a total of 12 years of service to Guadalupe County. Eight years after beginning as a patrolman

with the Guadalupe County Sheriff ’s Office in 2011, Pinder was promoted to his current leadership role.

Pinder says it’s always been his desire to lead the law enforcement efforts throughout the county.

“I’ve known that I wanted to work in law enforcement since I was a young kid and growing up in the community, I interacted with the deputies and I think again that kind of inspired me to serve the community and developed a good

relationship with them and then I just kind of started from there. I got a late start. It took me a little bit to get into it but back in 2011, I joined the academy and started my law enforcement career and ever since then, I’ve been working to serve the community,” said Pinder.

Pinder, who was at the forefront of the COVID-19 pandemic, says he’s had a good working relationship with the sheriff ’s office over the years.

Curtains open this weekend for A Christmas Carol Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- This year’s holiday performance at the historic Texas Theatre will bring the Scrooge to the stage.

Tickets are now on sale for this year’s holiday production of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

Director Sheila Lucas says the cast and crew are excited about bringing the music and lyrics of Keith Ferguson and Bruce Greer to this year’s audience. She says a giant group of community members have again put in the work necessary to bring to life this popular Christmas story.

“We’ve got 50 people on stage and everybody is related. Theater is family. We’ve got so many family units involved this year and it’s just been delightful and so many new friends. We have new faces in the show that are incredibly talented. Joseph Adam Medina for one-- just popped into rehearsals and he has just been a joy and he is so talented and local and this is my first chance to really work with Greg Dew who is local and extremely talented and then of course, all of our regulars are there too,” said Lucas.

Lucas says from the very beginning, everyone agreed that this show must be done in the most detailed fashion.

“We are struggling to make sure the costumes are right. You know, we have begged, borrowed, stolen (and) bought. We have done everything to get the costumes to be extraordinary and we are hoping that Seguin will notice and talk about it. So, we’ve got some special effects. We have glorious lighting and we are excited about it. It’s a big show,” said Lucas.

Lucas says adding that extra Christmas joy will, of course, be the music.

“The choral numbers when they all sing together, it sounds like heaven. I mean it’s a glorious sound. We have some very very talented vocalists in this show and they get to show off. So, that’s quite extraordinary and I’m loving that. We all love the music. We all go home singing it. We wake up singing it and so it’s amazing just to sit in the theater and listen to the vocals. They are quite amazing,” said Lucas.

The group will also be adding a Monday performance to its show schedule. Lucas says she is hoping that the schedule will accommodate everyone who wants to begin their Christmas celebration exactly one week earlier.

“We are going to have a Monday evening performance.

We are closing on a Monday rather than having two shows in one day. It is a pretty hard show and so I think it was better on the cast not to do a Saturday matinee and then when we polled people about our Monday, they went, ‘that’s great. School is out. We’ve got nothing to do. It’s perfect,” said Lucas.

Showtimes are at 7 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Monday.

A 2:30 p.m. Sunday matinee will also be performed.

Tickets are $20 reserved seating or $15 general admission.

Seguin wants you to Think BIG with Business Improvement Grant Special by Kyle Kramm, director of Seguin Main Street, CVB

(Seguin) -- The City of Seguin has launched its 2024 Business Improvement Grant application and is encouraging commercial property owners and business owners to think BIG about improving their properties. The grant program, started during COVID as a program to assist our businesses survive the shutdown and make improvements while they were closed, the program has continued to adapt and remain successful in helping businesses make large capital investments that are benefiting the entire community.

The BIG Program is a reimbursement-based grant program aimed at the development and expansion of business enterprises within the City of Seguin. BIG Program applicants may be eligible to receive up to a 75 percent matching grant, with a maximum grant awarded to an applicant not to exceed $10,000. Improvements and other expenditures eligible under the Seguin BIG Program include façade improvements, sign improvements, site improvements, and other real property improvements.

The race for county sheriff has drawn a total of two candidates. Joshua Ray, the current chief deputy for the Guadalupe County Sheriff ’s Office also announced his decision to run on the same ticket in November.

The Republican and Democratic Primary Election is scheduled for Tuesday, March 5, 2024.

Navarro Panthers rack up alldistrict football accolades Chris Austin

(Geronimo) -- The All-District 13-4A football teams have been released and as expected, the Navarro Panthers were well represented.

Named First Team All-District were senior running back Antwoin Mebane, senior tight end Mack Berry, senior linebackers Hayden Toliver, Jacob Arias, Nick Schwarzlose and Diego Chapa.

Senior Gabriel Rangel was recognized twice as a defensive back and kick returner. Mebane and Berry were named first team in 2022 with Berry earning the nod on the offensive line.

Mebane rushed for over 110 yards per game for the Panthers in the 2023 season. Berry originally played on the offensive line due to injuries early in the season before sliding out to tight end. Arias, Toliver and Schwarzlose were the top three tacklers for the Navarro defense this season. Rangel had eight interceptions on the season and returned a kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown against Cuero.

Panther second team selections on offense were senior quarterback Colton Schuelke, senior offensive linemen Houston Berry and Matt Richardson, junior offensive lineman Kade Pugh and junior center Craig Heiman. Senior defensive linemen Knox Gallini and Landun Taylor also earned second team accolades.

Several Panthers who played two-way earned honorable mentions on the other side of the ball. They included both Houston and Mack Berry at defensive line, Schwarzlose and Chapa at running back and Richardson on the defensive line. Also garnering honorable mentions for Navarro were senior offensive lineman Knox Gallini, sophomore defensive back Austin Davidson and senior kicker Sam Sneed.

29 Navarro student-athletes were named to the Academic All District team. Those honored included seniors Arias, Houston and Mack Berry, Chapa, Xavier Cropper, Knox Gallini, Thor

Jensen, Mebane, Rangel, Richardson, Schuelke, Schwarzlose, Sneed, Ryan Tatom and Toliver.

Juniors on the academic team were Robert Beltran, Ethan Borchardt, Montgomery Elder, Kaden Guerra, Corbin Hannibal, Heiman, Pugh, Yandel Ramon and Jesse James Waz. Academic team sophomore honored were Kohen Blount, Davidson, Max Stalnaker and Luke Vogel. And freshman Lane Black was also recognized on the all district academic team.

Earlier this month Toliver earned Academic All State First Team honors. Cropper was named to the Academic All State Second Team. Mack Berry, Chapa and Schwarzlose were recognized as Academic All State Honorable Mention.

The Panthers were lead by 6th-year head coach Rod Blount and advanced to the UIL Region IV Semifinals in the 2023 season.

Navarro has reached the semifinal round in every year of Blount’s tenure.

Roger Martin Cutcher, age 80 of Seguin, passed away on December 7, 2023. Roger was born on July 27, 1943, in Houston, Texas to Margaret Nell (Bock) and H. E. Cutcher.

Roger started his young life in Pasadena, Texas before his family moved to Seguin, TX where his father owned Cutcher Motor Company until Roger’s Senior year at Seguin High School. The family then moved to Amarillo, Texas. During this time Roger moved to Lockhart and lived with his grandparents where he attended Lockhart High School. He then transferred to Amarillo High School graduating in 1961. He graduated from Texas Tech University with a Marketing Degree and moved to Albuquerque NM where he began a career as an independent marketing rep for several different companies.

During college Roger worked for Ben E Keith Company and after many years in Albuquerque, Roger had the opportunity to return to Texas and Ben E. Keith Company. He then moved to Kraft Foodservice, working in Sales Management.

Returning to Seguin to be near family was always important, so in 1995, Roger went back into the family Ford business until finding a new home with KWED Radio. He loved working with his many friends and business acquaintances that he had known for years and made many new friends along the way.

He was first and foremost a dedicated family man who also didn’t mind spending a few hours on any golf course, including making it to walk the Master’s Golf Tournament twice. They loved to travel and didn’t waste any time finding new adventures to take them away but he said it was always good to get back to your old rut too.

Roger is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Sally Fritz and husband Paul, brother, William N. Cutcher, and father-in-law, Roger Herron.

Survivors include his loving wife of 46 years, Renee Herron Cutcher; sons, Craig Martin Cutcher and wife Kim, and Michael Newell Cutcher; daughter, Allison Denise Cutcher; grandchildren, Justin, Dalton, Corben, Hank, Jacob, and Sonny; greatgrandchild, Lavendar; mother-in-law, Audrey Herron; sister-in-law, Rhonda Cushatt and husband Randy; brother-in-law, Roger L. Herron and wife Wendy; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members, and many friends.

A memorial service celebrating Roger’s life will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church with the Reverend Stephen Shortess officiating. A reception will follow in McKeough Hall.

In Loving Memory of George Hardwick George Hardwick, born on August 17, 1954, left this world on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of courage and a life well-lived.

He was preceded in death by his father, George Z. Hardwick, his mother, Rose M. Harrell, and his sister, Cathy Denise McAhon.

George is survived by his devoted wife, Jeanelle Hardwick, and their three sons: George VanValkenburg, Leif Hardwick (Amanda), and Jason Hardwick. He is also survived by two cherished grandchildren, Elizabeth VanValkenburg and Trenton Hardwick. Additionally, he is survived by his sister, Arlene Cline.

George was a proud Vietnam veteran, having served his country with honor and dedication. His commitment to duty was reflected in his military service and how he approached life.

In his spare time, George pursued his passions with enthusiasm. He found solace and excitement in the ocean’s depths through scuba diving as he had a special connection with anything on the water, and his adventurous spirit made every moment on the waves memorable. Additionally, he embraced the thrill of racing and took to the skies with a love for radio-controlled planes.

His presence will be missed, but his spirit will live on in the memories we shared and the love he leaves behind.

May George Hardwick rest in peace, surrounded by the eternal calm he found in the waters he so dearly loved.

Biden Calls Texas Abortion Case “Outrageous” (Washington, DC) -- President Biden says it’s “outrageous” that a Texas woman had to leave the state to have an emergency abortion. Kate Cox, from Dallas, became pregnant with a fetus with a rare genetic defect, which made it likely it would die before birth or only live a few days.

Beyond that, doctors told the mother of two that carrying the fetus to term could hurt her ability to have more children in the future. Texas has strict abortion laws in place following the repeal of Roe v. Wade. The state’s Supreme Court denied her the right to an exception so she left Texas this week. In a statement from the White House, Biden blamed Republican officials and said no woman should be forced to flee her home state for health care.

Another Death Linked To Cantaloupes (Undated) -- A third person in the U.S. is dead after eating cantaloupe contaminated with salmonella. Another 96 have been hospitalized and 230 cases of the illness have been reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The outbreak, first reported November 17th, is also linked to five deaths in Canada. Cases have been reported across the country and a recall has been put in place for several brands and retailers.

Colorado Lawmakers To Ban Fatphobia In Workplace, Housing Market (Boulder, CO) -- Colorado will ban “fatphobia” to stop employers and landlords from discriminating against those who are overweight. Lawmakers in the healthiest state in the US are expected to pass legislation that stops landlords from denying rentals based on weight limits and also puts workplace accommodations for overweight employees in place. Other states including Massachusetts, New Jersey and Vermont are considering similar laws as the fat acceptance trend grows across the country.

Vaccine Hesitancy Leading To More Cases Of Influenza (San Antonio, TX) -- Flu cases are surging, especially in the south. Experts say that some of this is due to increasing vaccine hesitancy that erupted during COVID. Texas-based infectious disease expert Peter Hotez, of the Baylor College of Medicine, warns against listening to antivaccine activists. He says they’re monetizing the internet for their own benefit. Instead, Dr. Hotez is advising people to get a flu shot and, if they get sick, to take Tamiflu.
