Sheriff Santa strikes again this holiday season Holiday cheer delivered to area nursing homes Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) – Delivering holiday cheer is exactly what the elves of the Guadalupe County Sheriff ’s Office accomplished these past two days. Leading the Christmas route to all the nursing homes in the county was none other than Sheriff Santa, better known as Guadalupe County Sheriff Arnold Zwicke.

For over a decade, Zwicke has donned the Santa suit delivering loads and loads of gifts from the back of his patrol cruiser.

Per tradition, the elves in brown entertain the residents with a few Christmas carols before a host of red packages are pulled from Sheriff Santa’s bag and are personally put into the hands of each resident.

Caught enjoying the lines of Jingle Bells was Laura Chandler, a resident at Seguin Assisted Living.

Chandler says Sheriff Santa’s visit was a complete joy.

The best part of that day for Chandler was “just seeing everybody. It comes from their heart.

“I think it’s wonderful. It cheers everybody up.”

Fire destroys area home Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- A local family is homeless today after a fire destroyed their home in northern Guadalupe County.

Patrick Pinder, Guadalupe County emergency management coordinator and fire marshal, says at approximately 5 a.m. Tuesday, fire fighters were called out to the structure fire in the 700 block of Ferryboat Ln. “Guadalupe County Fire Rescue, Lake Dunlap Volunteer Fire Department, Marion Volunteer Fire Department and McQueeney Volunteer Fire Department responded. The fire appeared to have started in a bedroom. It’s not a suspicious fire.

It’s currently under investigation but it appears as though the resident had a wood burning stove

located in the residence, so it appears as though that was the cause of the fire,” said Pinder.

No injuries were reported.

Deadline nears for KWED Christmas Angel contest Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- There are now only three more days in which to submit letters for the annual KWED Christmas Angel contest.

Families have until this Friday to drop off their letters here at KWED. Anyone is invited to write in and explain why they believe their family or someone they know are deserving or is need of $500 cash this holiday season.

The contest, which started several years ago, is designed to illustrate the Christmas season's true spirit of giving and sharing.

As part of the contest, the winning letter will be read live on the air just a few days before Christmas.

The winning letter along with photos of the family will also be printed in a holiday edition of the Seguin Daily News.

All entries must include the name of the person submitting the letter along with their address and phone number.

Letters without a name or phone number will not be considered for the contest.

The winning letter will be chosen by an anonymous panel of judges not employed at Seguin Radio KWED or the Seguin Daily News.

All letters for this year's contest must be submitted by 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15 at the radio station located at 609 E. Court St.

“It’s pretty neat. It’s pretty thoughtful and I think we all appreciate it. It’s just sometimes, we don’t say that,” said Rymer.

Growing the program over the years has been very important for Zwicke. Zwicke says the individuals on his list deserve the very best year-round.

“I think it’s part of giving back to the community.

You know, it’s something that the citizens of Guadalupe County and Seguin have always done.

I can’t think of another better place to live when someone is in need, the community steps up and we just wanted to do our part,” said Zwicke.

Zwicke says he especially credits the community who has shown its support over the years.

“It’s awesome when you see the smiles and the hugs and the people that tell you they believe in Santa Clause. They never give up, so we are proud to do this. The community’s support has been tremendous.

The donations coming – we were able to pick up the two assisted livings here in Seguin and we are glad to partner with them as well,” said Zwicke.

This year’s Sheriff Santa program was able to provide gifts and carols to a total of 9 facilities in both Seguin and Schertz.

Chew, Kallus, and Nedd Named to CSC Academic All-District Team Chris Austin

SEGUIN, Texas -- Three Texas Lutheran volleyball student-athletes were named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC)) Academic All-District team, the organization announced Tuesday morning.

Setter Julia Chew (Cypress/Cy-Fair), middle blocker Keriann Kallus (New Braunfels/New Braunfels), and outside hitter Brylie Nedd (Sealy/ Sealy) each received the honor that recognizes the nation’s top student athletes for performance both on the court and in the classroom.

To qualify for nomination, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher and compete in 90 percent of the institution’s sets played or start in at least 66 percent of the school’s total matches during the 2023 season.

Academic All-District honorees were considered for advancement to the CSC Academic All-America ballot. Student-athletes selected as finalists to advance to the national ballot are designated with an asterisk. Those

who are selected for first-, second- and thirdteam All-America honorees will be announced on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2024. Chew, Kallus, and Nedd were each selected to advance to the national ballot.

A Kinesiology major with a focus in Teaching and Coaching, Chew earns her second Academic All-District honor by maintaining a 3.70 GPA. The junior setter tallied TLU’s second-most assists (475) and third-most digs (254) and service aces (30). Chew carded double-digits in eleven matches this season.

Kallus, who will graduate from Texas Lutheran in December, is a Kinesiology major with a focus in Exercise Science who holds a 3.51 GPA. The senior middle-blocker was named AllSCAC Second Team, earning All-SCAC honors for the first time in her career, Kallus ranked seventh in the SCAC in solo blocks with 13 and ninth in hitting percentage at .265 on the season. Kallus led the Bulldogs with a career-

high 61 blocks and ranked fourth on the team with 28 service aces. Kallus also finished third on the team in kills with 218 and second with 283 points on the season.

A Communications major, Nedd holds a 3.90 GPA. The junior outside hitter ranked second on the Bulldogs with 242 kills, averaging 2.24 kills per set, and 268 points, hitting .165 ini 2023. Nedd recorded double-digit kills in nine matches in 2023.

Roger Martin Cutcher, age 80 of Seguin, passed away on December 7, 2023. Roger was born on July 27, 1943, in Houston, Texas to Margaret Nell (Bock) and H. E. Cutcher.

Roger started his young life in Pasadena, Texas before his family moved to Seguin, TX where his father owned Cutcher Motor Company until Roger’s Senior year at Seguin High School. The family then moved to Amarillo, Texas. During this time Roger moved to Lockhart and lived with his grandparents where he attended Lockhart High School. He then transferred to Amarillo High School graduating in 1961. He graduated from Texas Tech University with a Marketing Degree and moved to Albuquerque NM where he began a career as an independent marketing rep for several different companies.

During college Roger worked for Ben E Keith Company and after many years in Albuquerque, Roger had the opportunity to return to Texas and Ben E. Keith Company. He then moved to Kraft Foodservice, working in Sales Management.

Returning to Seguin to be near family was always important, so in 1995, Roger went back into the family Ford business until finding a new home with KWED Radio. He loved working with his many friends and business acquaintances that he had known for years and made many new friends along the way.

He was first and foremost a dedicated family man who also didn’t mind spending a few hours on any golf course, including making it to walk the Master’s Golf Tournament twice. They loved to travel and didn’t waste any time finding new adventures to take them away but he said it was always good to get back to your old rut too.

Roger is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Sally Fritz and husband Paul, brother, William N. Cutcher, and father-in-law, Roger Herron.

Survivors include his loving wife of 46 years, Renee Herron Cutcher; sons, Craig Martin Cutcher and wife Kim, and Michael Newell Cutcher; daughter, Allison Denise Cutcher; grandchildren, Justin, Dalton, Corben, Hank, Jacob, and Sonny; greatgrandchild, Lavendar; mother-in-law, Audrey Herron; sister-in-law, Rhonda Cushatt and husband Randy; brother-in-law, Roger L. Herron and wife Wendy; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members, and many friends.

A memorial service celebrating Roger’s life will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church with the Reverend Stephen Shortess officiating. A reception will follow in McKeough Hall.

AZ Abortion Case Arguments Start Today (Phoenix, AZ) -- The Arizona Supreme Court is hearing arguments today on a major abortion case. Justices will decide whether Arizona uses a law that allows abortion up to 15 weeks, or returns to a territorial-era near-total ban. Only six judges are taking part in the case following a decision by one justice to recuse himself. That judge stepped away after old social media posts led abortion advocates to believe he was too biased to be involved in the case. That means a tie decision could be made when it’s all said and done.

FDA Approves Sickle Cell Treatments Using CRISPR (Washington, DC) -- The FDA is approving sickle cell treatments that include CRISPR gene-editing technology. That could open the door for thousands of patients in the U.S. to receive a treatment that has the potential to alleviate the painful effects of the disease. The FDA approved Casgevy, which is a one-time treatment for patients 12 and over. The CDC says sickle cell disease affects about 100-thousand Americans, especially Black Americans with African ancestry.

CDC Releases Data On Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (Atlanta, GA) -- Chronic fatigue syndrome. You may have heard of it, but you may not have realized how many adults in the U.S. actually suffer from it - until now. New data from the CDC estimates the condition affects about three-point-three million people in America. Study co-author Dr. Elizabeth Unger says the results clearly indicate chronic fatigue syndrome “is not a rare illness.” Among some of the notable findings, experts were able to determine that cases were more common in women than men, and rates were higher in people between the ages of 50 and 69.

Cigna Drops Merger Plan With Humana (Bloomfield, CT) -- Health insurer Cigna is dropping its plans to merge with competitor Humana. The Wall Street Journal reports the two companies couldn’t reach an agreement after working on the idea for weeks. A Cigna-Humana merger would have led to a company with a value exceeding 140 billion dollars.
