Squirrels find homes at a pair of local parks Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- In less than a month, not one but two new squirrels have been added to Seguin’s Squirrel Trail Program.

The city of Seguin welcomes squirrels #7 and #8.

The art projects are part of the mix of creative larger than life stone squirrels that are being sponsored

publicly and placed at various locations around town.

Fires keeping area VFD’s busy throughout Guadalupe County

(Guadalupe County) -- A pair of structure fires kept area firefighters busy over the weekend.

Patrick Pinder, the emergency management coordinator and fire marshal says both fires were reported on Sunday afternoon.

The first one destroyed an RV and damaged another one in the 1700 block of Poplar Road. The fire was reported at 3:12 p.m.

Pinder says the fire was started

by an adjacent control burn that got away. The owner did not have insurance. The American Red Cross was called in to temporary provide shelter to that owner.

Fire departments called in to assist included the Guadalupe County Fire and Rescue, York Creek and San Marcos.

The second fire destroyed a local barn. Pinder says it took firefighters approximately 30 minutes to extinguish

Hoffmann, who commissioned San Marcos Artist Rene Perez for the job says there was never any question that she wanted to participate in the program and is thrilled by the final product.

“It just seemed like a fun way to bring people to Seguin and show that we are a fun town and creative and have a good personality here. So, it wasn’t even a question for me if I wanted to participate in this. Rene did a fantastic job. This is something that he does a lot. He’s done some of this stuff in San Marcos but I’m over the moon about the details and the anti-littering theme. I think he did a great job,” said Hoffmann.

Perez, who has done similar work in other communities, says he is honored to have created River Guardian – bringing a message of both recreation and conservation to Seguin.

“She brought me out here and she said she wanted a river and trees and things like that and I told her, I like these statues when cities make them but what I don’t like about them is they are always cluttered with a lot of images just meshed together and I was like I’m going to use this sculpture as it is and work with it, if that’s okay? That’s when I came up with outfit and all the messages about just respecting the river and not to trash the river and keep our waterways clean in Texas. I always put that message a lot in San Marcos on the river over there so I’m really happy to spread the message over here to Seguin,” said Perez.

As River Guardian works to welcome families to Starcke Park, the city’s latest squirrel just unveiled Friday sits at the south end of the footbridge at Park West.

Here sits squirrel #8 Happy. Happy was brought to a colorful life thanks to a band of anonymous friends who wanted to remember their special friend Marie Jo Billnitzer and all teachers in the area.

Taking the lead and speaking for the group was Whitney.

Whitney spoke to those in attendance for the unveiling. She says the sponsors asked her to speak about the wonderful woman who was a friend, teacher, mentor, colleague, servant leader, faithful child of God, artist, and creative spirit.

“I worked with another group on a bench for the Bauer Park to honor our friend who had died. I said, do you want to do a bench like that? And she said, ‘No. I really didn’t want to but she said what about a squirrel?’ A squirrel, of course -- and it was perfect because Marie Jo was an artist. She was just larger than life. She was involved in everything. She was a fabulous woman, a great friend and she raised these four beautiful children. She was my husband’s kindergarten teacher and after she became a widow, she knew that I was off on Fridays and we’d take off and go to art museums and other things like that and then her very good friend is Sandra and they would go to teacher conferences together or they would go to a retreat and do painting and art things,” said Whitney.

On hand for the tribute were Billnitzer’s family which included Beth Billnitzer, Marie Jo’s daughter-in-law.

Beth was commissioned by the group of friends to paint Happy. During the event, Beth explained her vision for the design.

“First of all, I knew that it was going to memorialize Marie Jo Billnitzer and as my mother-in-law, I knew her and so I knew how she loved children and she was many people’s teacher from Seguin. She taught here for so long. So, I came here to the park to look at the park kind of with her eyes and see like what she would have seen and she would have seen the happy children playing, the skating, the splashing and all of that and it was very joyful and I saw a family with a piñata and they were having a birthday and I thought, she would have just admired that whole vibe so I tried to show that on the squirrel. The squirrel is reflecting the environment here,” said Beth.

Beth, an art teacher and artist, says even she has claimed a favorite part of the squirrel and hopes families will also feel the joy when they meet Happy.

“The first thing I would say is making the piñata pattern was something I’ve never done before and so I tried several things to see if it worked and I’m really pleased with how it worked out. I think that texture is super nice but my favorite detail on the squirrel is the kids in the splash pad. I captured the joy that those kids were having just to be splashing in the water. It was a warm day when we were here in June and you know what that is like here in Seguin and they were just really enjoying it,” said Beth.

The program has grown to 24 squirrels – all being prepared for future unveiling over the next couple of years.

The opportunity to sponsor a squirrel is also still available.

The cost is $2,500 per squirrel. Each sponsor will also need to cover the cost of the artist.

Marion Bulldogs represented well on All-District 13-3A football team Chris Austin

(Marion) -- The All-District 13-3A football team was announced last week and there were several Marion Bulldogs who made the team.

Junior linebacker Hadley Mote, who broke the Marion single season tackle record in 2023 was named to the All-District first team. Mote averaged over 10 tackles per game for the Bulldogs with 126 stops this past season.

Joining Mote on the defensive all-district first team were senior linebacker Aiden Batey and senior defensive back Chase Hallmark. Hallmark earned first team defense and offensive accolades as he was selected first team at wide receiver as well.

Hallmark’s teammates, senior quarterback Bo Stahl, junior running back Christian Sanchez, senior offensive linemen Kase Kelso and Justin

DeHoyos along with junior offensive lineman Garrett Mann were also honored on the AllDistrict 13-3A first team. Stahl and Mann were alldistrict first team members in 2022.

Second team members for the Bulldogs were tight end Sam Proscia, and linemen Michael Purcell and Keagan Taylor on offense. Defensive second team members for Marion were defensive back Jaxon Garner, lineman Weston Teboe and linebacker Jaiden Riley.

Marion Bulldog honorable mentions were Mote, Batey, and Garner at wide receiver on offense.

Defensive honorable mentions were DeHoyos and Purcell on the defensive line along with defensive lineman Adonis Gutierrez and defensive back Caden Hernandez.

35 Bulldogs were named to the Academic All-District team. Those honorees were Batey, DeHoyos, Garner, Gutierrez, Hallmark, Hernandez, Kelso, Mann, Mote, Proscia, Purcell, Riley, Sanchez, Taylor, Teboe, Stahl along with David Amescua, Emerson Blevins, Braeden Flemming, Michael Goerndt, Evan Hage, Gage Hamilton, Shane Mora, Ryan Mowery, Ian Nevarez, Tanner Otis, Kade Pape, Aaron Salinas, Tristan Schlogel, Cayden Schultze, Will Thetford, Gavin Thomspon, Gavin Seofje, Jack Wells and Kyle Zamora.

Marion finished 4th in District 13-3A in the 2023 season. The Bulldogs advanced to the BiDistrict round of the UIL Class 3A playoffs under 6th-year head coach Ryne Miller.

Roger Martin Cutcher, age 80 of Seguin, passed away on December 7, 2023. Roger was born on July 27, 1943, in Houston, Texas to Margaret Nell (Bock) and H. E. Cutcher.

Roger started his young life in Pasadena, Texas before his family moved to Seguin, TX where his father owned Cutcher Motor Company until Roger’s Senior year at Seguin High School. The family then moved to Amarillo, Texas. During this time Roger moved to Lockhart and lived with his grandparents where he attended Lockhart High School. He then transferred to Amarillo High School graduating in 1961. He graduated from Texas Tech University with a Marketing Degree and moved to Albuquerque NM where he began a career as an independent marketing rep for several different companies.

During college Roger worked for Ben E Keith Company and after many years in Albuquerque, Roger had the opportunity to return to Texas and Ben E. Keith Company. He then moved to Kraft Foodservice, working in Sales Management.

Returning to Seguin to be near family was always important, so in 1995, Roger went back into the family Ford business until finding a new home with KWED Radio. He loved working with his many friends and business acquaintances that he had known for years and made many new friends along the way.

He was first and foremost a dedicated family man who also didn’t mind spending a few hours on any golf course, including making it to walk the Master’s Golf Tournament twice. They loved to travel and didn’t waste any time finding new adventures to take them away but he said it was always good to get back to your old rut too.

Roger is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Sally Fritz and husband Paul, brother, William N. Cutcher, and father-in-law, Roger Herron.

Survivors include his loving wife of 46 years, Renee Herron Cutcher; sons, Craig Martin Cutcher and wife Kim, and Michael Newell Cutcher; daughter, Allison Denise Cutcher; grandchildren, Justin, Dalton, Corben, Hank, Jacob, and Sonny; greatgrandchild, Lavendar; mother-in-law, Audrey Herron; sister-in-law, Rhonda Cushatt and husband Randy; brother-in-law, Roger L. Herron and wife Wendy; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members, and many friends.

A memorial service celebrating Roger’s life will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church with the Reverend Stephen Shortess officiating. A reception will follow in McKeough Hall.

Fate Of Mifepristone Could Be Known Soon (Washington, DC) -- The Supreme Court is deciding whether to take up a legal fight over the drug most commonly used for medication abortion.

This has to do with the FDA’s process for approving drugs. Earlier this year, a Texas-based federal judge invalidated the original approval of the drug, which happened two decades ago. His ruling was then narrowed by an appeals court. If the Supreme Court Justices decide not to intervene in the ongoing litigation, a ruling that limited the availability of the drug by mail would go into effect.

Texas AG Ken Paxton Threatens To Prosecute Doctors Who Perform Court-Ordered Abortion (Austin, TX) -- Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is threatening to prosecute any doctors who perform an abortion on a woman who had just won a court order allowing her to obtain one. Lawyers for Kate Cox argued the medical exemption in the state’s near total abortion ban is vague, and that her pregnancy has a severe anomaly that could prevent her from having children in the future. A district court judge on Thursday said the idea that the law might actually cause her to lose that ability would be a miscarriage of justice. Paxton, however, says the judge’s order does not shield doctors from prosecution under Texas abortion laws.

Study Suggests Fentanyl May Be Connected To Birth Defects (New York, NY) -- Doctors in some cities are concerned about a new syndrome seen in newborns which may be connected to fentanyl. A new study shows at least ten babies exposed to fentanyl in the womb have been identified with distinctive birth defects, including cleft palate, small heads and bodies, and drooping eyelids. The mothers all acknowledged using drugs, particularly fentanyl during pregnancies. The babies studied are in Delaware, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and California.

CDC Director Visits Detroit (Detroit, MI) -- The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention visited Detroit on Thursday urging people to get flu, RSV, and COVID-19 vaccinations. Dr. Mandy Cohen toured the Detroit Healthy Housing Center on the east side of the city while a free vaccine clinic was held there. Linda Little, president and CEO of Detroit’s Neighborhood Service Organization, said the area is part of a health care desert and that the clinic gives people support if they can’t get to a hospital or other healthcare center in the city.
