Former school employee recognized by family Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) --- Clara Vega’s job in the school cafeteria at Jefferson Avenue Elementary was more than just making sure lunch was served. It was about making connections with students and letting them know that each of them mattered.

On Friday, Vega’s legacy was memorialized thanks to her granddaughter Michelle de Leon who made sure to honor those positive contributions made on campus so many decades ago with the dedication of a stone bench in front of the school campus.

Man arrested after evading arrest with Seguin PD Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- A burglary suspect was taken into custody Thursday afternoon, but not before barricading himself inside a home in the 1000 block of Elm Street.

Seguin Police say officers arrived to the home to serve a felony burglary warrant on Kewannee Wilson, 48.

When he saw authorities, Wilson reportedly ran inside the home and barricaded himself inside a room.

Officers were made aware that the room occupied by Wilson contained multiple firearms.

At various times, they said officers could hear Wilson manipulating a firearm inside the room.

Wilson was directed by officers to vacate the room, but declined and eventually stopped all communication.

Due to the general area of the incident, the Seguin ISD schools

nearby -- which included Seguin High School and Weinert Elementary -enacted their secure protocols for the safety of students and staff.

According to the district, during a secure protocol, students stay inside the building and do business as usual.

The Seguin Police Department was able to take Wilson into custody without further incident.

Wilson was transported and booked in the Guadalupe County Jail.

He faces charges of Burglary of a Motor Vehicle with two plus previous convictions, which is a state jail felony.

So, she would take care of them, and she told me that if anyone was ever shy and couldn’t speak up for themselves to just let her know and she would take care of their lunch and would make sure everyone had a meal. So, I got with the school and tried to make a donation so that nobody would have to go without, and we discovered that there was already a program in place to take care of all the Seguin ISD students. So, I got with the principal, and he asked if we wanted to do a bench,” said de Leon.

According to her granddaughter, Vega served the campus in the late 70s to early 90s. de Leon says her grandmother was a true woman of faith and compassion.

“She was so selfless.

She didn’t want any big to do. She would be very

honored that we were doing this for her. She was passionate about serving others. Like Snow White, the animals would just come up to her, so I think of that because she was so loving, and everybody felt some welcome around her.

She made everybody feel at ease and loved,” said de Leon.

In fact, de Leon’s 10year tribute to Vega has since evolved into even more support for the local campus.

“We decided to adopt Jefferson and we already have some things in place just to kind of thank the teachers, the administration, maintenance, cafeteria workers, everybody who contributes and goes above and beyond for these kids.

Sometimes in secret they just do good things that we don’t know of and so I just wanted to do something special for them especially during the holidays

because we’ve got to spread that love in Seguin,” said de Leon.

De Leon says she encourages others to also take time to see how they can support a local campus. She adds that adopting a school is made easy through the Seguin Education Foundation.

TLU Baseball Announces 2024 Schedule Bryce Hayes - TLU Sports Information & Sports Marketing

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran Baseball announced its 2024 schedule, featuring 23 home games at Katt-Isbel Field. The Bulldogs will also play in the Concordia Classic at Concordia University in Austin, February 9-10. The season will be the first under new head coach and TLU Baseball alum Kyle Palmer ‘09 and the 75th in the program’s history.

The Bulldogs open the season with a three-game series against Sul Ross State on Feb. 2-4 at Katt-Isbel Field. The Bulldogs will then face HardinSimmons and future SCAC foe, Concordia (TX), in the Concordia Classic, Feb. 9-10, before traveling to Richardson to face UT-Dallas in a three-game series.

TLU will then begin a 13-game homestand at Katt-Isbel Field beginning with a three-game series against Castleton University on March 1-2. The first midweek game of the season will be against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), beginning a three-game series with the Engineers on March 6-8.

Texas Lutheran will open conference play with a weekend series against St. Thomas, March 15-16. In league play, Texas Lutheran will host the Celts, Dallas, Schreiner, and Centenary and also travel to Austin College, Trinity, and Southwestern.

The 2024 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament returns to The Depot at Cleburne Station, Friday, May 3-Sunday, May 5.

Roger Martin Cutcher, age 80 of Seguin, passed away on December 7, 2023. Roger was born on July 27, 1943, in Houston, Texas to Margaret Nell (Bock) and H. E. Cutcher.

Roger is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Sally Fritz and husband Paul, brother, William N. Cutcher, and father-in-law, Roger Herron.

Survivors include his loving wife of 46 years, Renee Herron Cutcher; sons, Craig Martin Cutcher and wife Kim, and Michael Newell Cutcher; daughter, Allison Denise Cutcher; grandchildren, Justin, Dalton, Corben, Hank, Jacob, and Sonny; greatgrandchild, Lavendar; mother-in-law, Audrey Herron; sister-in-law, Rhonda Cushatt and husband Randy; brother-in-law, Roger L. Herron and wife Wendy; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members, and many friends.

A memorial service celebrating Roger’s life will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church with the Reverend Stephen Shortess officiating. A reception will follow in McKeough Hall. Private ennichment will be held later in the St. Andrew’s Church Episcopal Church Columbarium.

Court Hearing On Abortion Case (Austin, TX) -- A Texas court has held an emergency hearing in a lawsuit brought by a Dallas woman seeking an abortion. The woman received a diagnosis last week that determined her unborn child has an abnormality that leaves no chance of survival. Her doctor also says carrying the baby to term would jeopardize her health and her ability to have more children in the future. Her doctor is balking at carrying out the procedure because of the new Texas abortion bans.

Governor Hochul Announces Doubling Of NY’s Mental Health Clinics (Albany, NY) -- Governor Kathy Hochul is announcing three-and-a-half-million-dollar in funding to immediately double the number of New York’s mental health clinics. Thirteen more behavioral health clinics would join the 13 that already serve 65-thousand New Yorkers a year across the state. Hochul says it’s a top priority especially with so many people having dual diagnoses involving addiction as well as mental illness. The Governor’s plan would eventually triple the number of mental health clinics to 39, regardless of ability to pay.

GOP Candidates Spar Over Gender-Affirming Care For Minors (Tuscaloosa, AL) -- Republican candidates for president are sparing over gender-affirming care for minors. During a debate on NewsNation, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie said he doesn’t believe in banning transgender procedures for children. He said Republicans should believe in less government and the decision should be left up to parents. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis meanwhile said the procedures are irreversible and dangerous. He added that parents should not have a right to abuse their kids.

NTSB Chair: Aviation Workers Suffer From “Culture Of Silence” About Mental Health (Washington, DC) -- Aviation workers are suffering from “a culture of silence” about mental health that’s affecting safety. That’s according to the head of the National Transportation Safety Board, Jennifer Homendy. She said at a summit to discuss the issue that current FAA rules push people to lie or deny help. She said that workers in the aviation industry are “in effect punished for following the rules around disclosure” of mental health challenges.
