Connect Seguin looking to connect people to their destinations even more Darren Dunn

(Seguin) -- The Connect Seguin public transportation program continues to serve the people of Seguin.

The low cost, fixed-route bus service is a partnership between the city of Seguin and the Alamo Area Council of Governments (AACOG).

Assistant City Manager Rick Cortes spoke about the program during Tuesday night’s meeting of the Seguin City Council. Cortes says Connect Seguin continues to provide an important community service.

“It’s hard to believe that we are in our 10th year of Connect Seguin which is really amazing. It was a student initiated project at TLU and city council so it’s been great. We started with 3,000 participants initially, riders and we are up to 21,000 this year so it’s a great program that has worked very well and we have an opportunity to expand the program. We have been made aware from AACOG that there is funding available -- I think about $12 million and we are looking at expanding the program. We want to help our manufacturing area also and I think we are looking at expanding our hours

from I believe it’s from 7 o’clock to 5 o’clock currently to 4:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and that would accommodate some of the shift work also,” said Cortes.

Cortes says in addition to the regular Connect Seguin bus service, they are also looking providing some additional transportation services. This would be more like an on-demand ride sharing service.

“And then we have another new program also. It’s called a Micro Transit.

It’s very similar to Uber. It will be run through AACOG. So, we are looking at initiating that program. I am looking at the hours and how it would operate.

We are thinking maybe even Thursday through Saturday, maybe Thursday through Sunday,” said Cortes.

Again, the new service would be a real time service, that will be offered for what Cortes called a relatively small fee. The council approved the concept and agreed to allow Seguin City Manager Steve Parker to send a letter to AACOG showing the city’s support for the new service.

City of Seguin working on new pocket park, name announced Darren Dunn

(Seguin) -- A proposed neighborhood pocket-park is getting a new name and its first official amenity.

The Seguin City Council on Tuesday agreed to name the property near, Jones and Dolle avenues, as Pachanga Park.

Parks Director Jack Jones says this is something that they’ve been discussing for quite some time.

“The city bought this property roughly eight years ago as part of the work to do the Walnut Springs Trail,” said Jones as he shared a map with the council. “Right over here is now a parking lot. It used to be the Juan Seguin Elementary School, now a parking lot but it needs a name. It’s been there for awhile. There has been lots of events held there over the years. The parks board met several times to talk about a park name and historic names were thrown out there,” said Jones.

The property, which is just north of the old Juan Seguin campus, has been used for a number of public events in the past. The West Side

Neighborhood Project uses it for a clean up day each year, and the Pan American Golf Association has also used it for Easter egg hunts. Jones says they worked with Councilman Chris Rangel, who grew up and still lives in that area, to come up with the name.

“And we thought who else to talk about to get some more context and background to that park was Councilman Rangel. We invited him to a meeting Oct. 2. He spent some time with us. We were picking his brain on the history of this park.

In the end and after discussion, the board just decided that the name, Pachanga Park, is the recommended name for this park located on the

southwest corner of Jones and Dolle Avenue,” said Jones.

The park not only got an official name, but the council also approved the installation of a basketball court, which will become the first amenity for the park. The courts will not have lighting, but the council asked staff to see if lighting could later be included as a way to provide kids in that area more opportunities to have fun and safe activities after dark.

The council also agreed to extend the name of the Walnut Springs hike and bike trail all the way down to Max Starcke Park. The trail was recently extended, and now travels from New Braunfels Street all the down to Starcke Park.

(Seguin) -- Seguin and Guadalupe County families will get to choose from a pair of opportunities this Saturday to put food on the table.

The first opportunity will be held in Geronimo.

Navarro ISD Superintendent Mandy Epley says the district will again be partnering with the San Antonio Food Bank on Saturday to provide food to the community in the Navarro Intermediate campus.

(Seguin) -- Seguin Police Department's Blue Santa is working even harder this year to take the stress off of parents this holiday season.

Sarah Chilutti, the community engagement officer with the Seguin PD, says the first efforts are reminding parents, grandparents and guardians to get their applications in as soon as possible. The deadline to apply for Blue Santa assistance is this Friday, Dec. 8.

Chilutti says to make things even more easier and to allow parents a sense of control, they have also opted to get the gifts into parents hands as soon as possible.

"So, we've recognized in the past we would just do two days for pickup and everyone is busy especially in the holiday season. People are out working hard and we wanted to give them more opportunities, more days to be able to come and pick it up. So, once their gift is ready and the sooner they apply, we will shoot them a text message or phone call and let them know they can come pick up their presents that way it's not so stressful on them," said Chilutti.

Chilutti says the program overall is moving quickly and appreciates all those who donated, who have already submitted their applications and those who have helped wrap the hundreds of gifts needed to make the program a success.

"All these efforts that you see and all the extra time after work that we are doing makes everything worth it at that moment especially when you see that little kid light up when they are picking up those presents. So, that is probably my personal favorite part is just seeing

them and it's always like the chief said really cool when you see a volunteer come back and go 'hey, I used to need this program. I don't need it anymore but I want to pay it forward with my time and help out and I always love saying that too. It's really a true definition of Seguin and shows how our community is too," said Chilutti.

Chilutti shared her comments during Friday's annual KWED Holiday Food and Toy Drive. Chilutti said the program is preparing to ensure gifts under the Christmas tree for 1,500 children.

Blue Santa applications can be picked up and returned to a number of locations around town including Seguin ISD campuses, the Seguin PD and the Guadalupe County Sheriff 's Office. Toy and monetary donations are also still being accepted in our KWED lobby located at 609 E. Court St. Donations can be dropped off Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The second opportunity to feed your family will be held at Caterpillar. Caterpillar will host a pop up food distribution event on Saturday from 9 to 10:30 am. The event is also being held by the San Antonio food bank.

Cortes says AACOG is also exploring the idea of replacing the Connect Seguin buses, with a trolley. He says the trolley-style bus would be a more unique looking public transportation service for Seguin, and perhaps draw more attention to the program.

The new trolley-style buses would not require any additional funding for the Connect Seguin program.

Area high school basketball teams gain wins on Tuesday night Chris Austin

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Lady Matadors put the pedal to the metal in the fourth quarter to blow by the Gonzales Lady Apaches, 47-39 on Tuesday night at Seguin High School.

Down 35-31 entering the fourth, the Lady Mats went on a 9-2 run to take the lead and never looked back. Seven of those nine points were scored by guard Desiree Zuniga, who hit a free throw and a pair of three-point shots during the run. The senior finished the game with five three-point baskets on the night.

Seguin head coach Veronda Kendall said they tried to find spots for Zuniga to hit her shots.

“Des can shoot. We just tried to run things that give her opportunities to do what she does best. And yeah, she can shoot the 3-ball.”

Zuniga finished the game with 16 points. Senior guard Arianna Shular scored five points in the final quarter and matched Zuniga with 16 points on the night. Senior forward Jazmine Missildine was the third Lady Mat to score in double figures as she finished with 10 points.

Seguin is off the rest of this week. The Lady Matadors start district play next Tuesday at Pieper.

(Geronimo) -- Over in Geronimo, the Navarro Runnin’ Lady Panthers ran past Medina Valley, 51-34 on Tuesday night.

Tegan Harborth had 15 points, Cam Shields dropped in 12 and Sienna

Kramer added 10 points. The Lady Panthers will next play in the Devine tournament starting on Thursday.

For the boys Tuesday night, (San Antonio) — John Jackson established another school record as the Seguin Matadors crushed San Antonio Edison, 67-38.

The senior scored 34 points and became the school’s all-time leading rebounder with his 727th career rebound during the victory. Gabe Hernandez added 16 points for the Mats on Tuesday night. Seguin will play at the San Antonio ISD tournament starting on Thursday.

(Blanco) -- The Navarro Panthers were also a big winner on Tuesday night, cruising past Blanco on the road 66-39. Navarro will host the Panther Classic boys basketball tournament starting on Thursday.

(Comfort) -- And the Marion Bulldogs also got a comfortable win on Tuesday taking down the Comfort Bobcats, 58-39.

Richie Rayos poured in 25 points while Braeden Fleming added 19 for Marion in the win. The Bulldogs will look to keep making themselves at home in the Hill Country as they compete in the Comfort tournament starting on Thursday.

Randy Wayne Jones, age 74, of Seguin, Texas passed away on November 30, 2023. Randy was born in Ft. Worth, Texas on July 30, 1949.

Randy was a successful businessman, a loyal friend, and an avid outdoorsman with a larger-than-life personality. He always had a new joke to share. He recently discovered Facebook and enjoyed finding and experimenting with new recipes, usually desserts, and sharing them with family. He always arrived early to any party and jokingly chided the rest of us for showing up late.

Randy’s heart was huge. He always thought of others and how he could bless them or alleviate their burden. He often could be found with his buddies at Whataburger, laughing and trading jokes.

He is preceded in death by the love of his life Deborah Jones, son Chris Jones, parents Gil and Dorothy Lovell, brother Larry Jones, and sister Teresa Spencer.

He is survived by his nephew, Bradly Lovell and family; niece, Kasey Jones Cody and family; sisters-in-law, Julie Hunter and Kathy Caraway, brothers-in-law, Gerald Spear and Kenneth Spear; nephews, James Hunter, Robert Hunter, Richard Gavigan, Matthew Gavigan, Chris Gavigan; nieces, Victoria Kleen and Deborah Hunter and their families; numerous great nephews, nieces, friends and other loving family members.

A memorial service celebrating Randy’s life will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel with Chip Caraway officiating. A private interment will be held at a later date in San Geronimo Cemetery.

Suit Asks For Emergency Abortion To Save Mom’s Life (Dallas, TX) -- A pregnant Texas woman is suing to get an abortion. Doctors for Kate Cox say her fetus has a condition that virtually guarantees it will only live only one day or two, if it’s not born dead. And they say the pregnancy is threatening Cox’s health and chances of ever getting pregnant again. The suit asks that doctor be allowed to end the pregnancy without threat of legal action. Virtually all abortions are banned in Texas except when a woman’s life is in danger. A separate lawsuit claims that the rules for doctors are too vague.

CT Residents Most Influenced By Popular Weight Loss Drug (New Haven, CT) -- It looks like Connecticut residents are the most influenced by the popular weight loss drug Ozempic [[ oh-zempic ]]. That’s according to new research by Kaly.com, which placed the state at the top of the list. The rankings were based on Google searches, with Connecticut residents looking up the drug at a monthly average of nearly 14-hundred searches per 100-thousand people. New York came in second, followed by Louisiana, and Florida.

NTSB Chair: Aviation Workers Suffer From “Culture Of Silence” About Mental Health (Washington, DC) -- Aviation workers are suffering from “a culture of silence” about mental health that’s affecting safety. That’s according to the head of the National Transportation Safety Board, Jennifer Homendy. She said at a summit to discuss the issue that current FAA rules push people to lie or deny help. She said that workers in the aviation industry are “in effect punished for following the rules around disclosure” of mental health challenges. Earlier this week, the FAA announced it was creating a new rulemaking committee with the aim to make pilots and air traffic controllers feel safer talking about mental health. tudy Suggests Fentanyl May Be Connected To Birth Defects (New York, NY) -- Doctors in some cities are concerned about a new syndrome seen in newborns which may be connected to fentanyl. A new study shows at least ten babies exposed to fentanyl in the womb have been identified with distinctive birth defects, including cleft palate, small heads and bodies, and drooping eyelids. The mothers all acknowledged using drugs, particularly fentanyl during pregnancies. The babies studied are in Delaware, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and California.
