Fillerup for a good cause Steele Hyundai in New Braunfels is again partnering with Seguin Radio KWED by challenging the community to fill a pair of Palisades vehicles during Friday’s Holiday Food and Toy Drive outside the radio station at 609 E. Court St. The dealership has agreed to donate a

total of $1,000 if both of its vehicles are filled with toy and food donations. The donations will go to support both the Seguin Police Department Blue Santa Program and the Christian Cupboard.

For the last three decades, property owners have opened their doors to the public for the annual showcase.

season. She says with the purchase of a ticket, an individual may visit each of the seven properties listed on this year’s tour.

Christian Cupboard Holiday Food Drive now underway Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- Seguin’s local food pantry, the Christian Cupboard, is well on its way with its 2023 Holiday Food Drive. The drive which started earlier this month will continue through Dec. 31.

This year’s drive, however, might be one of the most important yet. Regina Lee of the Christian Cupboard says donations are needed to serve the number of clients which is at an all-time high.

“We have a lot of new people in our area. We have people who have been put here by Homeland Security and so they also have a need for food. People have a need to eat. We are doing at least 800 families. Multiple that for people who have four or five children. So, the need is so great,” said Lee. While food donations are accepted and collected all year long, Regina Lee of the Christian Cupboard, says this time of year is important in ensuring that its shelves are full for the start of a brand-new year. Now although that food won’t stay on the shelves for very long, Lee says it also helps them assist families especially during the winter season.

Lee says when it comes to donations, the non-profit pantry accepts it all.

“If people desire to do canned goods, of course, we want them. If they have the desire to do something fresh, vegetables, of course, we will take it. If they have the desire

to give us money, we will spend it. Anything they give us is wanted, needed and desired and we will utilize it,” said Lee. In shopping for items, Lee reminds those to also consider giving items that are just as important for local families.

“I realize we are a food pantry. But always remember we can always use soap, deodorant. I talked to three guys who were homeless and the first thing they asked for was deodorant. I am buying liquid shampoo. We have deodorant for them. We have razors. We get the feminine products, so we do try to have things than actual food,” said Lee. The Christian Cupboard is located at 516 N. Camp St. The cupboard is open Mondays through Thursdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. A 24-hour drop off box for donations is also available on the north side of the building.

Both non-perishable food items and cash will also be collected during this year’s KWED Holiday Food and Toy Drive. The drive, benefiting the Seguin Police Department Blue Santa Program and Christian Cupboard, is scheduled from 7 to 9 a.m. Friday outside the radio station located at 609 E. Court St. Donations can also be dropped off in advance in the radio station lobby Tuesday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

(Seguin) -- The Thriving Heart Crisis Center (formerly Guadalupe Valley Family Violence Shelter) was recently the recipient of a generation donation from Joe Cools AC and Heating along with Gemair Distributors of San Marcos. The center was given a 12k Mini Split AC and Heating System along with the install, which will help keep the building the right temperature as we head into colder months, and beyond.

600 Oak Haven, home of Bree and Todd Vickers (Seguin) -- The home of Todd and Bree Vickers is located in the subdivision of Oak Creek. Oak Creek is a gated community tucked in the corner where Elmwood Drive meets Eastwood Drive. The Vickers’ home was built by Mark Wheelington of Wheelington Construction.

Construction began in May of 2020 and was completed in January 2021. Construction took place entirely during the pandemic. Despite the challenges of the COVID shutdowns, the family was lucky that the construction process was very smooth with very few delays.

This Modern Tudor style home has four bedrooms, 3 full bathrooms and 2 half-bathrooms. The interior of the home is very colorful. Unique accent colors and prints can be found in every room.

Even the backyard is as colorful as the inside of the home. Many pieces of artwork hanging throughout the house are original pieces painted by the homeowner.

One of the downstairs bedrooms is occupied by the family’s son.

This room has all of his trophy deer mounts on display. Each deer has a special story and fond memories of a favorite tradition for him.

Upstairs is the domain of the Vickers’ twin daughters. Their room décor is a direct reflection of their personalities. One of the twin’s rooms is very calm with a muted color palette, while the other twin has a bolder design with colors and patterns. These rooms are connected by a shared bathroom.

The large living space upstairs is perfect for the entire family to enjoy. They can watch movies or play ping pong, and they spend quite a bit of time in that part of the house. The half bath in this area has an antique mirror that was originally used in downtown Seguin in Lone Star Barber Shop. Bree’s grandfather, EJ Seidenberger, was a barber there for many years. When he retired, he took the mirror, and it has remained with the family. Bree decided to use it in this bathroom but not before painting it a vibrant pink color, of course!

BROWNWOOD, Texas -- Texas Lutheran dropped Saturday night’s contest at Howard Payne, 97-76, at Brownwood Coliseum in Brownwood.

Mason Wallace (San Antonio/Judson) led the way with a season-high 20 points, including a career-high four made threes on eight attempts. Wallace would also have a team-high three assists.

Kris Jones (Port Aransas/Port Aransas) and Darnell Horton (Detroit, MI/ East English Village Prep) would finish in double figures - finishing with careerhighs of 14 and 10 points respectively.

A steal on the opening possession led to a transition dunk from Xavier Phillips (Austin/Dripping Springs), who finished with ten points on the night, giving the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. They would not lead again after the 52 second mark in Saturday night’s contest.

Texas Lutheran trailed for all but 52 seconds Saturday night, with the largest deficit of 22 points coming late in the second half. The Bulldogs were able to pull the score within four points with 15:26 remaining in the second half before the Yellow Jackets pulled away. After leading 48-39 at the halftime break, Howard Payne would outscore the Bulldogs 49-37 in the second half.

The Yellow Jackets shot 55.4% from the field on the night and held a 44-26 advantage in points in the paint.

MSG Ronald Frank “Ronnie” Ruby, USA (Ret.), age 74 of Seguin, passed away on November 21, 2023. Ronnie was born on October 6, 1949, in Eagle Lake, Texas to Alice Belle Clapp Mckee and Frank Ruby. Ronnie was a member of the 1968 graduating class of Seguin High School. He proudly served his country by joining the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and after 8 years of service he transferred to the United States Army where he retired as a Master Sergeant. After retirement, he enjoyed woodworking, building items, cooking, casino trips, and playing golf.

Ron is preceded in death by his parents and his stepfather, J. L. McKee. Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Marcy Ruby; daughters, Kimberly Green and her husband Patrick and Amber Story and her husband Chris; granddaughters, Ashton Story, Whitney Young, and husband Will, Cassidy Kirkpatrick and husband Ty, Rebecca Riebe, and husband Ryan, and Peyton Story; great-grandchildren, Henry, Macie, and Mahalie and Graham on the way; sister-in-law, Gina Burns and husband David and Debbie Vincent; brother-in-law, Shannon Truelock; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members and many friends.

FDNY Chaplain Laid To Rest Following 911-Related Cancer (New York, NY) -- Another casualty of 911-related cancer, this time an FDNY Chaplain, has been laid to rest. John Delendick spent 28 years with the department, but it was his time at Ground Zero that ultimately compromised his health. He passed away early Thursday at the age of 74.

Thanksgiving Leftovers Safety (Seattle, WA) -- There are many holiday traditions, including eating leftovers from the feast. But how long is it safe to eat leftovers, like turkey, cranberry sauce and mashed potatoes? According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, food can safely be eaten up to four days later if properly refrigerated. They say not to leave food out for more than a couple of hours, and you can always freeze food for up to six months and enjoy those tasty leftovers later.

FDA Announces Brownie Recall (Newburyport, MA) -- Chocolate brownies are being recalled in 14 states because of undeclared peanuts. The FDA says about 500 cases of brownies by Dianne’s Fine Desserts of Massachusetts are being voluntarily recalled because a peanut allergy warning was left off the packaging.

A statement released Wednesday says people with a severe sensitivity to peanuts run the risk of a life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the product. A list of states included in the recall can be found on the FDA website.

Officials Investigate Company Behind Taylor Swift Shows in Rio de Janeiro (Rio de Janeiro) -- Brazilian officials are investigating the company behind Taylor Swift’s Rio de Janeiro concerts after a fan died during the Eras Tour. Authorities say they’re looking into the company Time4Fun and the possible crime of endangering the health of concertgoers, and that the investigation is not connected to the fan’s death. A young woman died during Friday’s show, where fans complained of sweltering heat and limited access to water. Swift has three more shows this weekend in Brazil, and fans will be allowed to bring sealed water bottles into the venue.
