Families invited to annual The Table Thanksgiving Meal

(Seguin) -The Seguin community is making sure everyone has a seat at The Table this Thanksgiving weekend.

The city of Seguin with the help of a host of various churches and organizations will again be serving a complimentary Thanksgiving meal to all residents on Sunday, Nov. 26 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Seguin Coliseum. This marks the second year in which the community will be hosting “The Table -A Community Thanksgiving Meal.”

Speaking on behalf of the groups who will all be rolling up their sleeves that day is Dan Meyers.

Meyers says approximately 1,000 barbecue chicken plates will be served on a first come, first serve basis. He says the idea is to simply build community.

“What we are trying to do is model what Jesus would have us do which is to care for other people. We want to

provide for the community. We want to make sure that the focus is on The Table and that the needs of people are being met and that we are helping to grow community,” said Meyers.

Meyers says volunteers have spent weeks and months preparing for the event and look forward to serving all those who stop by for a warm holiday meal. Plus, he says there will be activities for kids and prayers for those requesting one.

Suspect still wanted for aggravated assault with deadly weapon Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) – The search continues for a man who got away during a traffic stop Thursday afternoon.

Seguin Police say at approximately 2:30 p.m., the Seguin Police Department Criminal Apprehension and Street Enforcement Unit (C.A.S.E) Unit along with members of the Guadalupe County Narcotics Task Force attempted to conduct a traffic stop on wanted subject Jeffery Rodriguez Jr. The 18-year-old from Seguin has an outstanding arrest warrant for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon out of Guadalupe County.

Rodriguez and two other males reportedly failed to yield to Seguin PD officer’s when an attempt to stop was initiated. Officials say this

resulted in a pursuit where speeds exceeded over 100 mph. The pursuit was terminated due to risk to the public’s safety as well as the officers involved. During this time, the Seguin Police Department notified Seguin ISD officials of the police

presence around the area of Court and State Hwy 46. At that time, all local schools in the Seguin ISD initiated a lockdown.

Rodriguez Jr. remains at large and is wanted on charges of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon that occurred in Seguin. Officials say Rodriguez Jr. should be considered to be armed and dangerous. Law enforcement officials believe he could still be in the Guadalupe County area.

The Seguin Police Department strongly encourages anyone with information regarding Rodriguez Jr’s whereabouts to call the Seguin PD at 830-379-2123, or the Guadalupe Crime Stoppers at 1-877-403-8477 (TIPS).

Drug arrests land suspects behind bars Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Guadalupe County) -- A pair of men were arrested during separate narcotics operations in Guadalupe County.

The first incident was reported at 6:55 p.m.

Wednesday, Nov. 15 in the 16,000 block of IH35 Frontage in Schertz. During the operation by the Guadalupe County Narcotics Taskforce, Jack Bernal, 18, of San Antonio, was found in possession of approximately 202 grams of THC cartridges and a handgun. Further investigation revealed that the handgun was reported stolen out of San Antonio.

Bernal was arrested and charged with the manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance.

Then approximately an hour later, another arrest was made. This incident was reported at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15 in the 2700 block of N. Austin St. Investigators with the Guadalupe County Narcotics Taskforce say Landon Ventura, 26, of Bandera, was arrested after

being found in possession of approximately 522 grams of methampehtamine.

He was arrested and charged with manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance.

(Seguin) -- The holiday season gets its official start next week as many Texans gather around the table for Thanksgiving dinner. But for the families of the 1,246 people killed last year in Texas by drunk drivers, holiday seasons will never be the same.

Starting Dec. 1, 2022, there were 108 people killed and 229 people seriously injured in just 32 days in DUI-alcohol related crashes across the state. All of these families suffered painful memories that will last a lifetime.

“Don’t turn your holiday event into a life-changing tragedy by drinking and driving,” said TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams. “A safe and sober ride should be at the top of your list when making plans with family and friends. If not, you risk your job, your life and the lives of others. It’s just not worth it.”

Drunk driving crashes are completely preventable, yet they can cause physical, emotional and financial consequences that last for years. If you drink any amount of alcohol this holiday season, never get behind the wheel. Instead, designate a sober driver, use a rideshare service or taxi, stay put, call a friend or family member, or use public transportation to ensure you get home safely.

Bulldogs Make History; Stun Division-II St. Edward’s, 71-63, for Best Start in Program History Bryce Hayes, TLU Sports Information & Sports Marketing

AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran women’s basketball team pulled off a huge 71-63 upset over NCAA Division-II opponent, St. Edward’s, at the Recreation and Athletics Center on the campus of St. Edward’s University Saturday afternoon in front of a shockingly pro-TLU crowd for the Hilltoppers home opener. The win marked the second straight win over a scholarship program for the Bulldogs and their first win over St. Edward’s in program history. TLU is now 1-2 against the Hilltoppers.

The win is the first win over a NCAA Division-II program since becoming a NCAA Division-III program in the 2000-01 season. With the win, Texas Lutheran improves to 4-0 to start the season, the best start in the program’s NCAA Division-III history.

The Bulldogs embraced the challenge of taking on SEU in the second half of a back-to-back despite facing another scholarship program in Lincoln University less than 24 hours before. The Bulldogs were all over the Hilltoppers from the jump.

Brianna Wilson (Austin/Cotulla) highlighted the afternoon as the Austin native tallied a career-high 19 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.

Kailee Mulkey (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) and Davi’Yanna Jones (San Antonio/Stevens) also scored in double figures with both finishing with 12 points. Jones would add a team-high three steals defensively off the bench for the Bulldogs. Jones is averaging two steals a game through three games this season. Lauren Sansano (San Antonio/FEAST) finished with eight points, three rebounds, and three assists. Audry Hornaday (Mission/Sharyland) finished with a team-high five assists.

Following a first quarter in which the Bulldogs shot 44.4% (8-of-18), the Bulldogs would never shoot below 40% from the field - finishing with a 47.5% shooting percentage on the afternoon. St. Edward’s would out rebound

the Bulldogs by a minor 32-31 margin, but TLU would force 23 Hilltopper turnovers to finish plus-four in the department.

Texas Lutheran would lead for a majority of Saturday’s contest with 35plus minutes of action seeing the Bulldogs with a lead, with a majority of the time leading by double digits. TLU would hold St. Edward’s to 30% shooting in the opening period as they would take an 18-10 lead after one led by six points from Wilson. TLU would extend their lead to as many. as 15 points in the second quarter, carrying a 14-point lead into halftime as a six point quarter from Sansano aided the Bulldogs start that stunned the St. Edward’s crowd.

St. Edward’s began to fire back in the second half as the Hilltoppers enjoyed their best shooting period in the third while the Bulldogs cooled to 40% shooting as SEU shrunk the Bulldogs lead to single digits entering the fourth.

Texas Lutheran was able to sustain and endure throughout the Hilltoppers final run to try and avoid the upset early in the fourth before the Bulldogs would increase their lead from four to 14 with 1:35 remaining. Clutch baskets from Juliana Tapia (San Antonio/O’Connor) - who scored all six of her points in the final three minutes - and clutch free throws from Brianna Wilson sealed the historic win for the Bulldogs.

Sharen worked at the Koennecke Accounting Firm, SMI, USAA, CMC, the Food Pantry, and the Texas Lutheran University Development Office.

Wendy Judith Parker, age 55 of Seguin passed away on Tuesday, November 14, 2023. Wendy was born in Rochester, New York to Maureen Babachicos and Ronald E. Corron. Wendy was an amazing soul who was cherished by so many. If you met Wendy, you loved Wendy. Wendy had a way of making strangers feel like they’d known her for their entire life. She lit up every room with her smile and warm spirit. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved music, movies, and anything that included her

loving family and girlfriends.

Wendy attended Clear Lake High School in Houston, Texas and went on to achieve a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and Management from the University of Houston-Clear Lake. She also achieved a Master’s Degree in Strategic Communications and Leadership from Seton Hall University. Wendy had an impressive professional career. Fresh out of high school, her unique story started in the mailroom at the Boeing Company where she went on to become Communications Manager in Houston for the Space Division and in San Antonio for the Military Aircraft Division.

She spent almost 28 years with Boeing. This was a true success story of grit

and determination. She left Boeing in 2015 to become the Sr. Corporate Communications Manager for the Public Affairs Division at Zachry Construction in San Antonio, Texas.

Wendy was preceded in death by her father.

Wendy met her soulmate, Steve Parker, and they had a magical love affair for the last 15 years. Survivors include her loving husband; her sons Hayden Starr of San Antonio Texas, Gage Parker of Lubbock Texas; daughters Hannah Locklear of Tacoma, Washington and Madison Parker of Austin, Texas. Wendy was also Gigi to two grandsons Julian and Deacon Starr. She is also survived by her Mother Maureen Corron and Maureen’s companion Jim Bordelon, her brother Ryan Corron and his companion Vickie Hester, her sister Catherine Carter and husband Pat Carter, and her daughter-in-law Tori Starr. She had some of the best girlfriends who were always there for her as she was for them.

Margarita “Margie” H. Colville, age 62 of Seguin, passed away on November 17, 2023. Margie was born on April 21, 1961, in Laredo, Texas, to Vicente (Farias) and Rafael Hernandez.

Margie spent her childhood and early adulthood in San Antonio, graduating from San Antonio College with a dental assisting degree. There she met her husband, Clark, and they decided to make Seguin their home in 1993. Margie became a beloved member of the community, including Navarro ISD, Guadalupe County Aggie Mom’s Club, Meals on Wheels, and the Guadalupe County election office. Her favorite passions were Zumba with her friends at GRMC and supporting her kids’ college alma maters across the state.

Margie is preceded in death by her parents.

Biden: Meetings With Xi ‘Constructive And Productive’ (San Francisco, CA) -- President Biden says his meetings with Chinese President Xi [[ she ]] were some of the most “most constructive and productive discussions” the two leaders have had. Biden said in a press conference Wednesday that the two countries will now resume militaryto-military talks, and will “restore cooperation” on reducing the amount of fentanyl shipped from China. It was the first time in a year the two leaders have met.

American Cancer Society Holds Annual Great American Smokeout (Undated) -- It’s the 47th annual Great American Smokeout. Thousands of Americans took their first steps toward quitting smoking on Wednesday. The initiative happens the third Thursday in November every year, and used to focus on cigarettes, cigars and pipe smoking. Now, the American Cancer Society includes all forms of tobacco products and vaping. It notes that smoking continues to be the number one cause of preventable death in the world.

Mississippi Health Officials Confirm First Pediatric Flu Death Of The Season (Jackson, MS) -- The Mississippi State Department of Health has confirmed its first pediatric flu death of the 2023-24 flu season. Pediatric deaths are defined as deaths in individuals under the age of 18. Records show there have been a total of 25 pediatric flu deaths in Mississippi, since the 2008-2009 flu season. The CDC is urging anyone over the age of six months to get vaccinated against the Flu, RSV and COVID to avoid serious illness and hospitalizations.

Missouri’s Access Extended For Full-Year Of Postpartum Medicaid Benefits (Jefferson City, MO) - Missouri has been approved to extend its federal Medicaid coverage for postpartum care for a full year after delivery. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced earlier this week that the state was approved for the extension for women’s care. The extra coverage is made possible through a bill signed by President Biden last year that was part of the American Rescue Plan Act. State records show that 85 pregnant women died in Missouri in 2020 from not receiving adequate care.
