This year has been tough on a lot of families. So, we wanted to go ahead and try to make this event even bigger. Try to get a better turnout so we can give more money to that program,” said Dasher.

Tejano music awards show to be hosted in Seguin

Guadalupe Productions, owned and operated by Andrew Belmarez, will be hosting its Second Annual Awards Show. The show is slated for Saturday night at the American Legion Hall. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there will be a limit on the number of individuals allowed in the audience.

Belmarez says he feels going through with the awards show is more important than ever. He says like most things, the pandemic has jolted those in the Tejano music business.

“The awards show is just to keep Tejano music going. (Seguin) - Although 2020 has been a difficult year for his business, local bar owner and DJ, Cosme Alzalde a.k.a. DJ Chuko is not letting Thanksgiving Day slip away from all those needing a warm holiday meal.

Alzade along with business partner Marcelino Leal, Jr. will again be hosting their Second Annual Thanksgiving Dinner for the community. Alzade says the free meal will be made available this Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. at JR’s Lounge.

Thanks to some of his customers and business sponsors such as Seguin Chevrolet, Alzalde says he’s hoping to feed even more families this year.

“Last year, we were able to feed about 180 people. This year, we are trying to do it a little bigger. We are trying to feed at least 250. I also got a great donation from Seguin Chevrolet.

They donated quite a bit of money for this and I want to thank them also,” said Alzalde. “Seeing that it’s 2020 with this pandemic, if you are having a hard time and in need of a Thanksgiving dinner, anybody is welcome to come on in and have dinner with us. Just walk on in and grab a plate and sit down and enjoy your Thanksgiving dinner.”

Alzalde says with many Thanksgiving meals in the community being forced to cancel, he felt it was important to still offer up a meal in a safe environment.

“With 2020, the way that it has been going on seeing a lot of people struggling, as far as us struggling with our business and then with having the support of the community, we in fact have opened up -- we just feel the need to do it again,” said Alzalde.

Registration is now underway for the Jim Barnes Jingle Bell Run Virtual 5K. The fundraiser which will be held from Dec. 5-16 is being hosted by the school’s PTC. PTC member Denise Crettenden says although the COVID-19 pandemic has created challenges for school fundraisers, she believes the virtual 5K is one of the newest and fun ways to raise some money.

Koontz Marilyn F Koontz, aged 81 of Seguin, TX, was called to her Heavenly Savior’s arms on Oct. 30, 2020.

Marilyn was born on February 24, 1939 in Quincy, Illinois to Marion and Eunice Haselwood. She lived nearly half her life in Quincy where she had graduated from high school in 1957.

Lubbock John Jay Lubbock, age 64 of Seguin, joined our Lord and Savior on November 14, 2020.

She loved cruises and her kitties, adored her “out to lunch” friends, her broccoli chicken and her Spurs, her puzzles and her books, but most of all her family.

She was a loving mom, grandma “Mimi” and great-grandma, and friend; and was a loving wife to her husband of 53 years, Leslie R. Koontz who preceded her in death on 9/12/2010.

Traveling was their favorite pastime; in their lifetime they had visited all 50 states, explored Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, Panama, Alaska and Costa Rica. One of the best trips ever was the Caribbean cruise with her sister in law Judy Wakefield (now deceased), and her daughters and granddaughters.

She is survived by her four children and their spouses, Kathy L. (David) Slee, Barbara A. (Donnell) O’Brien, Lisa K. (Rick) Robbins, Alan R. (Stephanie) Koontz; 11 grandchildren: Ryan (Candace) Slee, Nathan (Missy) Slee, Jordan (Shannon) Slee, Jenna (Josh) Bichsel, Emma Ridley, Connor O’Brien, Dana (Stuart) Davis, Lindsay Robbins, Jessica (Anthony) Buitron, Leah Allstott and Conner Allstott; and she was proud to have 18 great grandchildren: Gaby Wagner, Gavin, Grant, and Grayson Slee; Lenora and Ellis Slee; Desmond, Elliana, Alizah, Conrad, and Calina Slee; Lennox and Lucas Bichsel; Hazelee Perry; Henrietta and Evangeline Davis; Calvin Samley and Melodee Allstott-Little; nephews, Dave Hild and Steve Hild; several cousins, other loving family members and many friends.

James Richard “Dick” Pilgrim, age 97 of Seguin, passed away on November 7, 2020.

Dick was born in Waco, Texas on August 21, 1923 to Irene Belle (Alsup) and George Henry Pilgrim.

She sang with the Sweet Adelines Texas Star and Alamo Metro and TLU choir at Christmas time.

John was born on January 21, 1956 in Astoria, Long Island, NY to Jim and Dorothy (Sinclair) Lubbock.

He worked as an officer for the Department of Public Safety (DPS) for over 30 years.

He was a member of the Guadalupe Masonic Lodge # 109. His favorite times were spent with his many friends and family. He is preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, John Luther Lubbock. Survivors include his children, Dusty Lubbock and wife Meredith of Amarillo, and Morgan Land and husband Wade of Seguin; grandchildren, Maddison, Luke and Thomas; brother, Jim Lee Lubbock III and wife Carolyn; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members and many friends.

His careers included serving as a City of Austin Police Officer for 20 years, having completed that job as a homicide detective. He later retired from Wilson Sporting Goods as a pro golf salesman in the South Texas area.

He loved golf and travelling on cruises, especially to Alaska, with his wife B. J.

Dick is preceded in death by his sons, Curtis Michael “Mike” Pilgrim and Walter Blake Miller, his parents, his brothers, Lennox Pilgrim, Curtis Pilgrim, and Chandos Pilgrim and his sisters, Juanita Johnson and Lorissa Ludwig.

Survivors include his loving wife of 49 years, Berta Jean “B. J.” Blake Pilgrim; daughter, Cynthia “Cindy” Miller Brewer; grandson, John Roger Brewer; numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members and friends.

A memorial service celebrating Dick’s life will be held on Wednesday, December 2, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Jeremy Roy officiating and military honors rendered by the United States Army.

Private interment will be held at a later date in the Floresville City Cemetery. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be John Brewer, Don Crusius, Tom Adams, Gary Howard, tom Pilgrim, and Dr. William Brown.

Remember Dick’s classic quote, “go slow and watch for snakes.”
